Question about Intel Meltdown and Spectre bugs

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:28 PM PST

My pc has an intel core i5 4th gen haswell cpu. (4670) my MacBook Pro has a 5th gen broadwell intel cpu. Aside from updating my windows software and Mac OS software and keeping the OS's up to date, is there anything else I should do to prevent these intel bugs? Are there any patches to download, and if so how do I know which ones or if I already have them?Meltdown and Spectre?) Did 4th and 5th gen intel cpus even get a patch from intel or are they too old? I heard 4th gen didn't. How big of a problem are meltdown and Spectre?

    Thanks

Got a new laptop, only getting 45FPS at max settings

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 06:03 PM PST

I got an MSI gaming laptop, it has these specs

    GTX 1070 8GB i7-7700 16GB DDR4 RAM

Now, when I play games, I get average of 45FPS at max settings.

My friend said to play it while plugged in, still no change.

I lowered the settings on BO3 from max to lowest, still getting about 45FPS

    Anything I can do?

Edit 3:16AM: thanks for the help, just got off work and will try everything I possibly can. Will update again

    Scanning and repairing C:drive

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:16 AM PST

    Hey all,

Recently my pc started to scan and repair my C drive every time I booted up windows. It would always get to 68% and then stop, so I then had to turn it off and then reboot it and press a button to prevent the scan from happening.

I know my hard drive is fcked but whenever I try fixing it with the tutorials on youtube and etc it never works and always resorts to the % bar freezing.

Not only that but whenever I try using my pc it would be so slow to load up chrome, steam and it would even lag in my games such as CSGO (which never happened before).

I had my computer (desktop) for 3 years now, so I'm wondering if I should get a new hard drive? I'm not sure, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

My mouse changes sensitivity on random or sometimes when i hold/press R-click or L-click

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:07 AM PST

It is so annoying. It sometimes happens in-game, sometimes while doing anything else.

I can literally see the DPI button color change on the mouse. (I'm not pressing it on accident)

I've tried updating my drivers. Help would be appreciated.

    Windows 10, 64 bit.

Edit: maybe there's just a way to deny noise from changing DPI?

HDR Not Working Correctly on PC?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 01:00 AM PST

I've been trying to get HDR working on my PC (plugged into TCL P607) and it just...won't? When I turn on HDR in my PC settings, everything looks extremely washed out. When I try to watch HDR content online, it doesn't look right. Everything seems incredibly washed out and I'm not sure what the issue is. I have the right settings on the TV and have calibrated it, but I can't get HDR to work right with movies, games, etc. and it's driving me insane.

Need help with my external harddisc

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:47 PM PST

So a few months ago, my external harddisc got infected and there's this folder called "xnod32" in it. I assumed it was a virus and I tried deleting it. After deleting it, my external harddisc got really slow and I can't delete any files. Although, I can copy files and even put files inside the external harddisc albeit slow. I think deleting the file "xnod32" might have destroyed my external harddisc. I tried looking for other solutions on the internet but I didn't find anyone who encountered the same problem as I did. So any suggestions?

MacOS bandwidth lesser than Bootcamp (Windows 10)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:58 AM PST

From installing software application to updating from the app store net speeds are really incompetent and barely rack 200kbs. But when I need to game or do anything slightly demanding i resort to bootcamp on the same device and bandwidth isnt an issue; onine downloading does not falter like on MacOS.

I spilt some coffee sometime mid 2017 but it would be apparent in both operating systems if my network adapter was the cause. I really want to get back into using my mac for programming so if anyone has encountered this and knows a solution to this that would be terrific.

    DNS: 8.8.8.8

I have tried roll-backing my device and even performed a hard reset on the Mac disk drive. Both proved ineffective.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:10 PM PST

I expect when I open a video file that VLC will come to the front, but it just starts playing while in the background and I keep having to alt-tab to it. I can't see which setting will make it behave normally. Can anyone help?

    Folder becomes 64 kb file

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 10:07 PM PST

Hello So i bought a new flashdrive today, and after i moved my files there, i eject it safely. When i insert it again, it's said that there are errors that i should repair, so i repaired it, and now most of my folder (and the files inside) are converted to 64 kb files that can't be opened. Those are very precious files that i worked hard to gain, and i'tll be hard for me to lose it. Is there any way i can fix this?

    Description of problem

basically my brothers pc was updated from windows 8 to windows 10, worked fine for a while, then a couple months ago it tried to do an update. downloaded, installed, no problems. after restart it says update failed and restores the previous version of windows then starts the whole cycle over, it has done this about 20 times now.i cant get the install to go through properly, i cant make it skip that install, and after a while it will simply force the install to happen regardless of what you are doing at the time and no option to cancel it.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

    so far i have tried:

    • force quitting windows update and stopping the service in task manager.

    • unsuccessfully disabling windows update via the options within windows itself, as well as through a third party program.

    • using "wushowhide" tool to block the update.updating drivers and such.

    • system restore then update

i would like to find a way to get the update to succeed, if thats not possible i would like to get windows update to STOP trying to install this update, and if all else fails disable windows update entirely and permanently.

I want to download an entire website, and I want a simple viewer that still allows me to see all the page formatting and use link navigation and whatnot.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:49 AM PST

Basically, I want to play Starbound, and this game is virtually unplayable for me without the Starbound Wiki, but my machine cannot handle both Starbound and Chrome/Firefox being open at the same time (it can barely handle Starbound on its own).

Thus far, I've been playing Starbound and using my phone to look up things on the Wiki. This is annoying. So I want to download the entire Wiki and have it in a very minimalist browser (HTML viewer?) where I can still use the Wiki's search feature, link navigation, etc. The point being that I want it to use as little memory as possible in order to run the game simultaneously.

I've found software that can download websites, but I'm hesitant to download/try any of it without actually knowing the most reliable/common method of doing so. Same goes for the browser/viewer.

Overheating / Dead display on Samsung Galaxy J5

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:46 AM PST

So yesterday I turned my phone on and I couldn't change the display brightness. Weird, but I didn't think much of it at the time. A couple hours later, the right half of the screen got darker and started to flicker, that's when I started to get worried. I turned it off until I could take a better look at it, and left it alone for a while.

Later, I went to take a look at it and the phone was hot and the battery drained (Keep in mind that I had turned it off), I tried another battery and the phone turned on and vibrated, but the display was dead.

Sounds like an electric issue, but is it worth fixing?

    Description of problem

My pc just randomly started playing the narrator voice over my system. It sounded like it was saying "false" on a loop. I had a video open to a stream on youtube but the voice still played even after I muted that tab in chrome. No other programs were open at the time and a quick look at the processes running didn't reveal any red flags. Not sure this belongs here, but Google has been unsuccessful in teaching me anything. I don't have good search terms for this one.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

    Haven't had a replication yet

EDIT: It repeated. I launched OBS so that others can hear what was happening. I closed all chrome tabs down into my OneTab Extension and showed all that was open towards the end via task manager. Here is a link to the event

EDIT 2: I cannot get Norton Security to open now to run a scan of my machine. If I use run as admin, it prompts the typical admin dialog but then still does nothing...

My computer cable burned (It smells and let out white smokes), now my computer can't turned on.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:33 AM PST

    I don't know what details should I give, but here's the specs: - NVIDIA GT 120 - 2+2 GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Quad - Windows 10

So I gave my PC to my brother. When I was setting it up it works fine and my brother can play some games in it. But when I tried it but it won't turned on.

When I press the power button, nothing happened. But there is a burned smell and after a while, there is a hole on the side of the cable and there is smoke coming out of it.

I immediately turn off the switch. But the smells really smells bad.

The day after, I tried again. There is weird smell again but I switch it off immediately before the smokes comes.

So what is the problem here and how to fix it? Please help me.

Ghost WIFI? How am I connected to the internet without a router?!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 01:54 PM PST

Very confused. I just tried to connect to a new wifi router, NETGEAR. It's currently an open, unsecured network. When I try to open to control panel (routerlogin.net), it says that I'm not connected to the Wifi Network (but it sure seems like I am - I can go online, etc).

I opened up a control panel by entering the URL 192.168.0.1, but this says that my Wifi Router is a DIFFERENT router, with a different MAC address than my new NETGEAR router. The routers are called TC8717T5D and TC8717T5D-5G.

Even weirder, when I connect to those TC87 routers, I can connect to the internet. I can edit their names and security settings via the control panel. But I don't know where those routers are, or how I am accessing them. I can even unplug my NETGEAR router and still stay connected to the internet via the TC87 routers. Huh??

No idea what the hell is going on. Any ideas?

    Buggy Windows 7 Explorer Popup?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:23 AM PST

So I have a strange problem with Windows Explorer popup window not appearing but only for some programs:

If I want to change setup directories in the Blizzard App literally nothing happens after hitting the button. Foobar2000's menus will not open any Explorer windows when trying to "Open..." or "Add File/Folder/Location...". Audacity also won't launch any Explorer window. VLC has problems. Firefox has the problem. ImgBurn and PowerISO have the problem.

IE, Palemoon, and Chrome are just fine. Microsoft Office programs are fine. Adobe programs are fine. FreeCAD has no problems. MPC-HC has no problems. Itunes is fine. Notepad and ++ are fine. FRAPS is fine. Steam/GoG use their own GUI so they're fine.

I can change install directories when installing programs to Windows. There are no other noticeable anomalies when using Windows Explorer; Win+E works just fine.

I've already done a Windows SFC scan which hasn't solved anything. Opening programs as an Admin has no effect. Un/Reinstalling the programs with issues has no effect. Seems like all the programs affected are the programs I've installed a long time ago...except the Blizzard App.

I have a non-average monitor setup [1080,1440,1080verticle] that has changed many times. I have visually lost some desktop icons during resolution changes in the past, but they're always findable through Explorer. I also use DisplayFusion, if that matters.

Maybe the Explorer GUI is trying to open 'outside' my actual screen? Windows does seem to have a memory of where on the screen the Explorer window appears. Is there a way to reset the position of these Explorer popups?

GPU no longer detecting my middle monitor

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:20 AM PST

Hey all, so, I have 3 monitors all next to each other, 2 1920x1080s, and 1 1600x900.

Today, after restarting my PC, my middle one just stopped working, and my primary monitor, got switched over to my third monitor.

After another restart. my middle one works, however, my GPU is only detecting it as a "Digital Display," is stuck at 1024x768 resolution, and will not allow me to restore it to it's original 1080 resolution. I have since tried updating my GPU drivers, but I am still having this issue, and now my middle monitor randomly turns off.

For reference, I am running a Ryzen 1700 with an nVidia 1060 6GB on Windows 10, and my primary and third monitor still work fine. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for reading this, and I hope you have a good day!

Fried LVDS data cable and socket: risk to power up with ext. monitor?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:17 AM PST

    Hi all,

My Macbook Pro 15" 2.4, late 2010 suddenly gray screened and powered down yesterday. I was able to power up again, but I shut it down in panic once I smelled something burnt.

Now, as you can see in the image, it turns out that it was the LVDS data cable and socket that somehow shorted. Since the logic board is affected I'm worried what might happen if I try to use the computer with an external monitor: do I risk frying more components (connected to the logic board)? Can I make it safer in any way?

Everything is backed up, so there's no risk with regards to losing data, but I don't want to kill a perfectly fine HDD + SSD or start a fire.

Turned on monitor and there is over 100 dead pixels

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:17 AM PST

So I was using my computer last night (just 8 hours ago from typing this post) and everything was fine. I've never had any problems with dead pixels or that. Though I have turned on my monitor this morning and there is 100s of dead pixels all scattered over the place. Majority of them in the one spot though. https://i.imgur.com/TI7EwpO.jpg

Any help or suggestions in how this may have came about or that would be great.

How can www.kijiji.ca ban a computer from using their site?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2018 04:27 PM PST

I'm trying to find out how www.kijiji.ca can ban the computer I just bought from their classifieds website! It's an HP running Windows 7. When I contacted them they said that the computer had been banned because of a previous user and they wouldn't do anything about it. I tried a full system restore and that didn't work. Are they able to get info from individual parts of the computer? If so is there any way I can bypass this ban? It's not fair that a computer I bought from their website isn't able to be used with their website!

    Please help! Thank you!

    My ping is ridiculously high

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:00 AM PST

Hi, so recently I 'upgraded' my virgin media wifi from a super hub 2 to a super hub 3. It was working fine until I managed to buy a new computer. The internet has now been slow on all devices but on the computer it takes the cake. I am using a tp-link wireless wifi adapter (Ac1300 T4Uv2) to connect to the wifi and have been getting ping of up to, and including, 2000. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. I was wondering If somebody would know how to solve this problem and whether it is the provider themselves or the wireless adapter, thanks. specs: Windows 10 64bit Gtx 1060 3gb 8gb ddr4 ram 500gb wd blue hdd ryzen 5 1500x msi b350m pro vdh corsair 450w psu rosewill case
