Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:59 AM PST My receptionist gave remote access to our work computer to a scanner yesterday who posed as a Brother customer service representative. Long story short, I have scanned for malware and blocked remote access for the future as well as changed any password on the computer. Is there any way to know if or what they took? They were trying to sell her something when I came out from working with a client so perhaps they only wanted credit card info but I would like to be sure if I could. Thanks for the help. Also note that the number which shows up on Google when searching for support from multiple companies is 1-855-687-3777. That's the scammer. Edit: also they used Zoosk to access the computer if that helps [link] [comments] |
Acer XG270HU monitor - flickering issue Posted: 01 Feb 2018 12:18 AM PST I have had this Acer XG270HU monitor since 2016 now, and as of this week my screen has started slightly flickering (as in text literally looks like it's slightly moving and I can see dots on my screen). I have tried using different adapter cords, updating my NVIDIA drivers, and connecting a different source (my Macbook) to it instead, all to no avail. I will note that the screen gets progressively blurrier the more right I go across the screen - left being good and right being blurry. This all happened after I left my monitor on for 7 hours one night after I accidentally fell asleep (although I do have a screen saver) - does this have any weight? [link] [comments] |
Internet speed 'throttled' only on one PC at home Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:52 AM PST Hello guys. For some reason the internet on my brand new PC is only at about 10% of what it should actually be. I'm paying for a 100mbps connection and all my other devices do connect at that speed except my brand new PC. Yesterday it was working fine and reaching the 100mbps speeds with no problem. Today it only reaches 11mbps every single time when i test my connection on fast.com or speedtest.com. I think i caused this problem yesterday night when my internet connection went down due to my ISP doing maintenance in my area. Because of this, I connected to my mobile hotspot on my phone. I believe when I switched back to my default wi-fi network, i somehow got 'stuck' with my mobile hotspot speeds. The reason i believe this is because when i go to my network properties and click details, it tells me my "Connection-Specific DNS suffix" is T-mobile.com I've searched and searched and i have found no solution. Anyone know a fix for this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Should i Replace a HDD with 869 bad sectors? Posted: 01 Feb 2018 02:25 AM PST My 4rth disk, in my NAS, a HGST 6tb has 869 bad sectors. I have the disk since November and i just found out. The thing is that it has this bad sectors from the begging, and they dont seem to increase or change. They are stable 869 for 4 months now. Smart health info, etc all say health of the HDD is fine. the web interface of my NAS says "869 bad sectors have been identified and automatically repaired by the disk" Should i RMA it? Edit: I forgot to say that this is a RAID 5 array, so it has 1 disk failure tolerance, as well as that i keep of course regular backups... [link] [comments] |
Site I don't recognise in 'most visited' Chrome icons Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:52 PM PST To preface, I don't know a lot about Chrome. Yesterday I noticed a site I didn't go to represented in the 'most visited' menu underneath the search bar in Chrome (on my iPhone). Is there a chance that someone has accessed my Google account and visited this site or would it have to have been visited from my phone? Confused. Thanks. (Please let me know if I'm posting in the wrong place.) [link] [comments] |

Samsung sm-t110 tablet will not boot up properly Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:53 AM PST Hey guys, recently I've been unable to start up my tablet properly. This could quite possibly be because I dropped it for the first time in awhile, but it appears that it could be a battery issue, I honestly have no idea. Before the tablet completely stopped working, I was getting messages such as "Google has stopped working" over and over until it just shut off on me, and now I am stuck on the screen with the Samsung logo, it just stays there forever. When I plug in my charger, the battery icon does pop up and it shows that it has no battery charge, even though it does definitely still charge which makes me believe that it may be an issue with the battery. I have tried factory resetting but it will not proceed when I click volume up, it just sits on that screen for 30ish minutes then turns off. I am basically stuck and would appreciate any help that you guys can give me. If you would like me to take a picture of these 3 different screens I can do so, and if you need any more information I will do my best to provide any, thank you very much! [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 is trying to delete my data when updating Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:49 AM PST Hi all, I'm reviving an old tower that was sitting collecting dust for a year and trying to update to the latest windows 10. I am currently on windows 10.0 (build 10240). When the auto updater does its stuff I am presented with this (top two are greyed out and unclickable). I don't want a clean install and do want to keep my files and apps. How can I updated without deleting everything? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:49 AM PST I sent my computer (Lenovo y50-70) to get fixed because it was having some problems with the BIOS and the HD. They apparently solved the BIOS issue by changing it and I now have to change my HD. I have some (3) HDs from other laptops that I could use. My current HD All I want to know is whether I can use one of those HDs and if so, which one should I use? [link] [comments] |
Accidentally initialized my hard drive in disk managment Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:48 AM PST A bit of context. I upgraded from my old so I transferred my old HDD and SSD to my new PC. I'm running Windows on my SSD and all of my bulk data is on my HDD. I was updating my drivers when after I restarted I found out my D Drive wasn't being recognized (I believe it was the Intel Rapid Technology Driver that caused this problem). I went and took a look at disk management and a window popped up saying I had to initialized my drive. Idiotically enough I didn't pay much kind to it and pressed OK. Afterwards I realized my grave mistake. Is there any way to recover this data? Or basically undo this mess. It also looks like my 1tb is split into 2 partitions unallocated. Specs: GPU: MSI GTX 980 CPU:i7 7700k PSU: Evga 750 watts Ram: 8gb of DDR4 Ram Cosair Vengence MOBO:Asus Maximus Code IX Storage: 240gb & 120gb SSD; 1tb and 500gb HDD OS:Windows [link] [comments] |
Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows Technical Problems Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:48 AM PST Hello to everyone! Since January 29 my Xbox Wireless Adapter has been constantly blinking, even If my controller is off. I have tried to reinstall drivers, both the results are the same. On the other Windows 10 machine (which is also up to date) the result is the same. Strangely my Xbox One S controller is working fine and without problems with the connection, and game performance doesn't suffer. I am if asking if anyone has been in the same situation? Does a fix exist for this nuisance? P.S: I have tried to reset the communication between the controller and receiver both the result is the same! The receiver doesn't have any physical damages, and has been working fine till the date that I have written! Addon: I have searched most of the internet for this case, both have found no results! I am aware that the new adapter has been put on sale as of writing these post! The question was also posted on the Xbox One reddit, and someone sad this would also be a good place to ask because the issues is with Windows 10 [link] [comments] |
Computer crashed, won't get past BIOS splash Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:41 AM PST My workstation crashed last night while playing video games. The system would rarely get past the BIOS screen without automatically restarting. After several fixes, and a complete data wipe, the error persists. Fixes attempted: Unplug all USB besides KbM Clear case of dust Unplug all SATA drives and replug Restore to older state Boot into safe mode, then restart Clear CMOS Turn off Fast Boot in BIOS Wipe OS drive personal files Wipe OS drive Reinstall Windows on OS drive Reinstall Windows on different drive Wipe all drives For a little while I had access after the second Windows install but the computer crashed amidst updating drivers and put me back in the loop where I get stuck in booting to BIOS screen and it restarting shortly after the star wheel turns. GPU causing the PC to shutdown immediately after power button is pressed Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:39 AM PST Relevant specs -
My computer was very dirty and I decided to clean it. In the process, I also opened up my GPU and cleaned it. What I did to the GPU -
After all this, I waited for the GPU to dry up for a couple of hours before plugging it in. The PC boots up normally until I get to the log-in screen, makes a weird noise high-pitch noise and shuts down. I figure there's a short-circuit and do an elimination test to figure what's causing the problem, it's the GPU. PC turns on if I remove the GPU. With the GPU in, it shuts down immediately powering on (fans and lights turn on for just a moment). So I figure there's short-circuit on my GPU and the PSU is auto-shutting down after detecting a short. So am I completely fucked? Is there no way to repair the GPU and recover it? I am willing to get my hands dirty if someone can give me a direction. I tried to Google for solutions, but nothing substantial is turning up. [link] [comments] |
Very slow cold boot into low performance and unstable windows. Completely normal after reboot. Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:37 AM PST
Takes over a minute to cold boot with the screen flickering a couple times, proceeds to ask for my password which is weird because the local accound doesn't have one, I can proceed without typing anything. Windows is very unstable and unresponsive, games runs at ~10 fps without throttling the GPU at all. Corsair utility engine crashes on launch and often freezes windows while at it. After reboot everything works normally. Started after I updated to the 390.77 Nvidia drivers (clean install, used DDU to uninstall old drivers in safe mode), haven't had any free time to troubleshoot this week so I didn't have time to dig around for the older drivers to test. What fixes it:
Sorry for not having any more info on this, I have my last shift of the week today so I'll start digging deeper tomorrow. I'm kinda tossing this out here if anyone would know wtf is going on, any and every help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:33 AM PST I'm looking at getting a new SSD, particular at these three as I can put it on company account. I'm after 500GB for a laptop. They're all the same price, so what's the difference between them? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:43 PM PST Hello, i was just wondering if i could get a bit of help with an issue(Maybe, maybe more of a concerned question?) im having. Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:23 AM PST Every time I boot my computer, it appears that my power plan resets to Balanced instead of any custom plan I have created. I thought in that case I'd just modify the balanced plan itself but it appears that the settings I'm selecting in the Power/Sleep menu have absolutely no effect. I have it set so the computer never falls asleep but I'm finding that regardless of having selected 'Never', my computer will enter Sleep mode regardless. I have no idea how to stop this. Every time I wake it from sleep mode, my network disconnects and has to reconnect (despite being connected via ethernet) and occasionally my sound will stop working, forcing me to restart. Anyone know how to solve this issue? [link] [comments] |
Power button doesn't work, PSU turns on as soon as plugged, peripherals don't work Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:06 AM PST Tested two different PSUs, two different monitors. Result is the same. Cleaned everything from dust and applied thermal paste. I don't know what to do. Yesterday some teacher managed to turn this computer on, the monitor started to show things and when I moved to correct the keyboard and mouse USBs the monitor went pitch black again [link] [comments] |
