Should Google make their camera app widely available for phones other than the Pixel/Nexus line? Posted: 16 Feb 2018 11:28 AM PST Google's camera app is phenomenal. As Google integrates custom silicon to make their camera processing better (and distinguish the Pixel from other flagships), what is stopping them from allowing a much larger group of users access to an official version of the camera app? They could still say the Pixel has a class-leading camera, but make Android that much uniformly better. [link] [comments]

I have a Redmi Note 5 Pro. AMA Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:21 PM PST Xiaomi announced the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India earlier this week. I have the Pro variant of the handset with me which features a Snapdragon 636 @ 1.8GHz, 4GB RAM, and 64GB of storage. Been using the phone for over two days now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. My thoughts on the device: 1) Fast. The Snapdragon 625-powered Redmi Note 4 was no slouch either but the Note 5 Pro feels considerably smoother and faster. Runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1 Nougat. It even feels faster than my Galaxy S8. Shame on you, Samsung. 2) The Note 5 Pro is slightly thinner than the Note 4 and its edges are a bit more tapered. This is something you will immediately notice if you are coming from the Redmi Note 4. 3) The camera is a nice upgrade from the Redmi Note 4 but still behind the likes of the LG G6, V30, Pixel 2 etc. Not surprising given the price of the phone. Camera samples attached. 4) Like OnePlus, Xiaomi has placed the buttons on the navigation bar towards the center of the screen. Not a big fan of this move. 5) Not a fan of the white front fascia on the gold model. The black and blue variant look rad though. 6) The 4GB RAM/64GB variant costs Rs Rs 13,999 (218$), while the 6GB RAM + 64GB variant is priced at Rs 16,999 ($265). 7) 4000mAh battery. Easily lasts through a day of heavy use. No fast charging sadly. And still uses a microUSB port. 8) 20MP selfie camera. There's also a portrait mode for the front camera. It works decently given the price. 9) Not so impressed with the Portrait mode of the rear camera but then, I have not taken many photos either. Need to play around with it more. 10) You are either going to love or hate MIUI 9. Thankfully, Xiaomi has adopted the stock notification bar behavior in MIUI 9 so you can repalce the stock launcher with Nova and be done with it. It is a shame that people outside of India/China/Asia will never get to experience the Redmi Note 5 Pro. This phone deserves a global launch. For the price to performance ratio it offers, I doubt anyone who does not care about the camera will even think about buying any other device. Has google rolled out official call log backup/restore recently? Posted: 16 Feb 2018 07:21 AM PST I searched but there's not mention of this on anywhere on internet. Edit: Also this is draining a lot of battery. [link] [comments]
Accidentally stumbled on a neat trick, for a stylus. Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:24 PM PST I was eating a carrot when the back of it hit my screen, I washed and dried another carrot, and used the skinny tip to draw really accurately, looked online and didn't find it. Saw other things suggested that would scratch your screen up.Not that too many people would ever use it. But if you're in a pinch and can't find your normal stylus, use a regular carrot. Not a blunt baby one. [link] [comments] |
