5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 43)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 05:50 AM PST

Happy weekends, AndroidGaming - here are the five most interesting games I played this past week.

Let me know what you think about 'em :)

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 43 weeks ago here.

The games games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is :)

    Finally Friday!

Mars: Mars [Game Size: 139 MB] (free)

    Genre: Endless - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Mars: Mars is a truly endless "endless" game, where you jump from platform to platform on mars in your jetpack-like space suit with limited fuel (refills after every successful jump). The game never starts over and you never truly die, as the goal is simply to get the longest successful jump streak.

What I liked the best is that there are no forced ads, and that each of the over 50 characters (who often resemble real life people, such as Bill Gates or Charles Chaplin) felt 100% unique, by not only changing the background scenery, but also the music, jetpack, and sound effects.

A fun and not very punishing casual game with a non-obtrusive monetization. Finally! :)

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition [Game Size: 1.12 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Action - Online

    tl;dr review:

The $20 Square Enix charges for the full version of this game (first chapter - about 2 gameplay hours - is free) is a bit steep, but the gameplay is solid, and combat works great on touch.

If you haven't played a FF game before, however, there's a surprising amount of story in the game, and while the narrative is well-written and voiced by great voice actors, the game can feel rather limiting for someone is used to more "open-world" RPG games.

The game's worth it if you love the franchise or have always wanted to play a FF game, but I personally opted to just play the first chapter (personal preference - not because it's a bad game).

Super Crossbar Challenge [Total Game Size: 147 MB] (free)

Genre: Casual / Sports - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Tap and swipe the screen to hit the crossbar of the football goal. Get a multiplier and gather more fans for each consecutive hit, and complete missions across the world in the singleplayer mode, with multiplayer coming soon.

I found this casual football sports game surprisingly entertaining, and its monetization means that any forced ads, which you can skip immediately, can be completely removed through a $2 iAP.

The "meta game" consists of spending gold earned through performing more difficult shots on new football designs, or new player designs (skins).

Onmyoji [Total Game Size: 3 GB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Gacha / Strategy - Online

    tl;dr review:

As the largest mobile game I've ever seen, gacha RPG Onmyoji has gorgeous graphics, high quality (Japanese) voice-over and a ton of content and gamemodes.

It IS a gacha game, though, and paying players can acquire all the best heroes and gear simply by paying (and luck). However, as a game focusing primarily on single-player, you can definitely still enjoy the game.

And if you're a fan of RPG's or Gacha games, I'd at least give this a go simply to be amazed by its quality.

PUBG Mobile [Total Game Size: 762 MB] (free)

Genre: Battle Royale / Shooter - Online

tl;dr review: (Only released in China! - consider this a preview)

The official Player Unknown's Battlegrounds Mobile game has been released in China, and if you've played any of the NetEase Battle Royale PUBG-clones, you know what to expect already.

The game's high quality, has plenty of graphic and control settings, a monetization focusing only on cosmetics, and millions of players.

I really enjoyed playing the game, but because of the Chinese servers, my ping was so bad that it was nearly unplayable at times. With an inevitable English version of the game on its way, Rules of Survival is set to get some real competition!

Google Play: Not available yet, but can be found in the Tap Tap app.

Need a way to hide games with in-app purchases

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:00 PM PST

I have completely sworn off microtransactions, I will never again install an app with in-app purchases. However, the play store is flooded with these kinds of apps and there is no way to filter them out. As a result I have to spend a ton of time going through apps I have no interest in. You would think the solution would just be to look at paid apps, but many of these have in-app purchases as well. I just want to pay a developer, get all the features of that app, and that be the end of the transaction, why is that so difficult?

[DEV] My first two games. Action and Casual.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 10:06 AM PST

Hello everyone! I wanted to share with you guys my two Google Play exclusive games. The first game is a classic space shooter which took forever to make because of school and I had to learn everything about the software from scratch. The second game essentially took less than a day. I created the first game because I wanted to create my own version of a space shooter. The second game I created was an idea that came to mind as it is simplistic yet unique. I hope you guys enjoy it! I look forward to your thoughts on it. Thank you!
