Need Suggestions! 13-14" lightweight laptop, light gaming, ideally looks good (UK) Posted: 26 Dec 2017 12:46 PM PST Hi chaps, Need a new laptop, managed to stand on my old one and now want something lighter and better looking. Will be moving from a clevo 13.3" i7 and a 960m but totally realise that getting something the same spec won't really be possible. I am hoping I can get something with a MX150 inside as ita close to the 960m. Needs to be. Ultrabooky, so light and good battery and would be great if it's a looker as well! Have looked at both the Acer Swift 3 (but can't find it in blue...) And the Asus Zenbook but struggling to find one with a MX150 in! Any and all help is much appreciated! [link] [comments]
Boxing day shopping in Canada, looking for a solid light-moderate gaming laptop for school Posted: 26 Dec 2017 07:45 AM PST There's plenty of good deals out there but I'm not sure what is best. I'm not asking people to go find deals for me, but if you've found any you think suit me Id love to know. Budget is $900 CAD Thanks! [link] [comments]
Do I give in and get an 8GB RAM Yoga 920? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 10:54 AM PST Please excuse my lazy capitalisation. Writing this last-min on my phone! So I'm based in the UK and the official Lenovo site still only offers 8GB models here. There's a boxing day sale on for a few more hours and I'd get a nice amount off on the "best" (available) model: 1080p, 512gb ssd, 8gb ram. I've been holding out for this config, but with 16gb ram. Any input welcome! My current thoughts (pro/con buying the 8gb model today): CONs:

Thanks all :) [link] [comments]
Replacing my 6 year old Lenovo Z570 Posted: 26 Dec 2017 08:23 AM PST I'm looking to replace my trusty Lenovo Z570, I'm in the UK and have had it for 6 years, it's always served me well. Are there any good replacements for this on the market right now? Happy to spend £350-£450. [link] [comments]
Anyone know of metal (MacBook like) laptop with backlit keyboard? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 06:27 AM PST As the title says I'm looking for a laptop which is metal, almost MacBook like, with an SSD and a backlit keyboard that runs windows, preferably with an i5 although i3 is acceptable. I'm also looking for a nice backlit keyboard. I won't be doing anything crazy on it just streaming Netflix and editing photos/videos. So notebooks and stuff are probably out of the questions but it doesn't need to be overly powerful. Any suggestions? TL;DR looking to replace a very old Lenovo Z570, with some quality of life updates, ideally: Backlit keyboard, SSD, i3 or i5 and metal design would be nice. Budget is around £350-£450 & I'm in the UK. [link] [comments]
Laptop RAM upgrade - Compatibility and recommendations Posted: 26 Dec 2017 11:45 AM PST Hey, I'm looking to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 7559. Speccy: I'd like to get two sticks of 8gb dual-channel DDR3L, but I'm not sure what the best RAM to get would be, and what would be optimal for my laptop. I'm not familiar with the brands for RAM, and I don't have much context for what specs constitute good RAM. Also, DDR3L that I've looked at so far is advertised being compatible with 2nd and 3rd gen intel processors, and since I've got a 6th gen I want to make sure I'm getting the right kind/voltage etc for my laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated! edit - Formatting [link] [comments]
Unable to fit a 2.5" HDD in my Dell Inspiron 7577, cover doesn't fit. Posted: 26 Dec 2017 10:52 AM PST I recently upgraded to a Dell 7577 from a Dell 5577 since I could use the extra GPU power, however I have been unable to mount my 2.5" drive and have the cover fit flush as shown here. A 2.5" SSD fits fine, but the hard drive doesn't. it's just a tad bit too thick. Am I doing something wrong? there are some thin strips on the back of the laptop cover (I thought they were thermal pads but they seem to be cushions, maybe for shock absorption from vibrations?) and I was thinking about removing those, but it doesn't seem like it should be necessary... Any idea what I could be doing wrong? [link] [comments]
I need a laptop for 3D modeling and rendering, got it with 3 options left (Belgium) Posted: 26 Dec 2017 10:05 AM PST Hi guys, I am looking for a new mobile workstation. Because of certain Software I use (Solidworks and Visualise), I need a GPU like Nvidia Quadro. I already filtered to get it down to 3 devices, which one do you guys recommend? Other suggestions are welcome as well ;)
I'm leaning towards the Lenovo because it's has a better price and customisable. If needed I can give more specifications per laptop (especially Lenovo because I chose some other options than default). My initial minimal requirements, not really a budget range:
My current laptop is a Dell Precision but it can't detect my GPU anymore, among with other problems (randomly shutting down, wifi chip fails from time to time, heating problems). And I hate their customer support. [link] [comments]
How much of an upgrade am i getting here? 2-year old Y50 to XPS 15 9560 Posted: 26 Dec 2017 09:15 AM PST I bought a Lenovo Y50 about two years ago. Relevant specs:
I find it fine for gaming (at least for the games I play), and I'm not a graphics fiend or anything. I use it mostly for work anyway. But it has some physical damage I can't fix, which is starting to get annoying (non-functional USB port, and a PITA ethernet jack). I'm upgrading it and am looking at the Dell XPS 15 9560, relevant specs:
Am I going to see a noticeable improvement for gaming? I was thinking of using my new laptop as a dedicated work machine, and leaving the old one for gaming/home projects. But if the new one will be noticeable better I may change my mind and use the old one for an HTPC. Thoughts? I get lost quickly when looking at these things. I rarely play AAA titles until they are noticeably discuounted, so usually at least a year old. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to upgrade my Alienware 15's CPU/graphics card? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:41 AM PST I'm not sure where to post this, so I thought I'd try here. My Alienware 15's graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M, and my CPU is an Intel i5-4210H CPU @ 2.90GHz. I have 8 GB of RAM. I was wondering, since both my graphics card and my CPU are outdated, if it is possible to upgrade my CPU to something like an i7 and upgrade my graphics card to a 980 or anything better. I've read from some sources that the insides of a laptop should not be replaced/tampered with, but on other sites I am told that an Alienware 15 is highly customizable, I wanted to ask around to get more opinions on this. Any advice on where to go from here or if this is even possible would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Laptop Recommendation in the $700-$1100 Range for last semester of engineering school. Posted: 26 Dec 2017 07:12 AM PST My laptop just had the motherboard go out on it (bought in August 2013). It was an Asus Viviobook with an i7 processor and 8GB of ram. It had a 15.6" screen. I am looking for something comparable, I would like an 8th generation i7 as that seems to be best. I would like to get it from costco because I can get the warranty extended to 4 years with my mom's costco credit card. I was looking at the ASUS ZenBook UX430UN but I read that it had PWM flickering, which sounded not good. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I need to get it in the next two weeks before school starts back. I read through the laptop recommendation guide but none of them had the 8th gen processors that I could see. [link] [comments]
Comparing The New lenovo Ideapad 720S (15”) to an xps 15 Posted: 26 Dec 2017 06:44 AM PST What do you all think of the new Lenovo 720s 15 laptop? It comes with a 1050ti GPU. I don't know if the ram can be upgraded: it comes with 8gb and I don't know if it's soldered or if there's 2 slots. Has a 78whr battery vs 56/96. I also don't know if there's room for another HD, either M.2 or 2.5". Do you guys think it'll have close to the same build quality as the XPS? It looks to be a pretty good deal depending on how good the screen is. Comparing the $999 configuration vs the 1299 config, the only difference I can see is 256GB vs 512GB. [link] [comments]

Was looking at upgrading RAM, Specs say Not user upgradeable? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 05:53 AM PST I've got a satellite p55t-c5114 and I was looking to upgrade from 8 GB. It shows it has 2 slots, but I wasn't sure if I had 2 4 GB cards or 1 8. Well, when I went to pull up the specs, here, it shows the ram as Not User Upgradeable. Now, is that just coming from the perspective they don't think most users are willing to bust out a screwdriver, or did they solder that crap into the mobo or something nuts? I don't wanna drop the cash on RAM i can't use and this threw me a bit as it's not shown anywhere else in the document. Thanks for any and all help. [link] [comments]
New Laptop i5 8th generation RAM QUERY Posted: 26 Dec 2017 04:52 AM PST Hi! Quick question - i'm interested in this laptop but a bit sceptical about the 4GB ram! my previous laptop has 6GB so i was thinking when purchasing my new laptop to go for 6 or 8gb min! As it's a 8th generation intel i5- will it require less ram or shall i buy it and spend the 50£ extra and change out the ram myself from 4gb to 8gb? thanks for your replies! :) [link] [comments]
Opinions on the Surface Pro as an upgrade. Posted: 26 Dec 2017 04:44 AM PST Hey folks, just looking for your opinions on the Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 as an upgrade from my current Lenovo ideapad yoga 13". Current Amazon sales have the surface pro at £570 here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B076KRJG3C/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514291263&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=surface+pro Current uses are: web browsing, media consumption, AV control surface. The biggest con I can see so far seems to be the limited IO. Happy to hear your opinions and suggestions. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:59 AM PST Wanting a laptop for school, word, pdfs blah blah and maybe netflix ;) looking at the left dell xps 13 $799 and wondering if the i3-7100u processor and 4gb of ram is decent enough for me long term? thanks in advanced, will respond to comments fast [link] [comments]
Asus Zenbook i5 vs Vivobook i7 vs Lenovo yoga 910 Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:50 AM PST I love the yoga on paper but am afraid the fan noise might be a deal breaker, especially since I use Chrome for everything, wouldn't use Edge. How bad is it? As for the Asus, would a Vivobook i7 be better than a Zenbook i5? [link] [comments]
Dell XPS 13 (8th Gen i5) - Scared of coil whine Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:34 AM PST Hello guys, I've been thinking alot about getting a new XPS 13 for uni and media consumption and I have read many good things about this laptop. Amazing buid quality, good battery life and stunning screen. But I've also heared complains about coil whine, which would be a no-go for me. Do some of you have experiences with the new XPS 13? Is coil whine still an issue? Thanks for any replies in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Dec 2017 06:49 PM PST Hey guys, I'm looking for a laptop in the $400-$500 range that can run autocad programs such as inventor and maybe be used for some light gaming (very minimal and not at the same time). I would like a good keyboard and a fairly solid build. Other than that, I'm open. [link] [comments]

I think I got scammed. Is this a IPS panel (Seems not) ? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 01:06 AM PST According to this app my laptop has something called a AU Optronics B173HW01, which upon googling does not seem to be an IPS panel. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/a/img922/548/Ev8emA.png http://www.panelook.com/B173HW01%20V0_AUO_17.3_LCM_parameter_734.html Even though the colors and viewing angles seem ok, I guess it must just be a good TN panel, as according to that page it is one. I bought a Dell laptop on ebay that was advertised as "IPS technology". The description seems to be from the manufacturer, does that make a difference?. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Dec 2017 11:09 PM PST I have a Lenovo Legion Y520 with the GTX 1050ti graphics card, and according to oculus and most web sources, I should be able to run VR. However, the only exposed HDMI port is connected to the motherboard rather than the graphics card, leaving VR impossible. Would it be realistic to simply cut out some of the plastic of the case to expose the HDMI port of the graphics card and plug in directly? Thanks for all the help. [link] [comments]
