Notebook vs 2-n-1 and Windows Ink

Looking at the HP Spectre.. can't decide between the notebook and the 360 convertible. It's my understanding that only the 2-n-1 convertible is enabled for Ink but how much do I really need it?

    4k@60hz+Ethernet+USB3.x passthrough Hub/adapter for dell XPS 15?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 10:11 AM PST

I'm getting a Dell XPS 15 (9560) soon, and I'm trying to figure out the adapter situation. I'm hoping to find a single device that has:

    1. 4k@60Hz DisplayPort (or HDMI, as long as it actually supports 4k@60Hz and not just 30Hz)
    2. Gigabit ethernet
    3. Additional USB 3.0 (3.1?) ports for misc peripherals (mouse, keyboard, external drives)

From what I can find, this is probably going to need to be a TB3 connector for the 4k@60Hz. It would be nice if the additional USB ports were 3.0 or ideally 3.1 for transfer speeds to external drives. If they are fast USB, I could potentially do ethernet with an additional chained adapter.

I'm hoping to avoid spending $200+ on a giant docking station. I've seen a number of sub-$100 adapters that come SO CLOSE to fulfilling my requirements, at least nominally, though some have questionable reviews.

    For example:

    1. Cable Matters USB-C to 4K 60Hz DisplayPort Multiport Adapter with 2x USB, Ethernet for $39.99. But the extra USB plugs are 2.0, so not a good option for external drives
    2. Plugable USB Type-C Dual 4K DisplayPort and Gigabit Ethernet Adapter for $85. This one doesn't have any USB ports.

Does anybody know of any choices that might fit this bill? Or some other arrangements that can do 4k@60Hz+Ethernet+external drives over one TB3 plug?

Spectre X360, 8th gen, audio problems

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 10:03 AM PST

So I bought the 8th gen, spectre x360, 15 inch. Worked fine for a couple of weeks.

Now sound comes out mainly from one side, the right side. It sometimes goes back to both sides playing, but then it ends up at the right. So frustrating.

Do you think it's a hardware problem? Or maybe one of the bios updates that happened recently? If sound comes out of the left sometimes, does that mean the hardware is not damaged?

    Maybe it's a Windows 10 insider update?

    Thanks

Edit: uninstalled drivers and installed them back. No change.

Dell Laptop Inspiron 1545 Screen Turned To Static, Turned It Off, and Screen Is Black

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 05:51 AM PST

Hi there, I will try to give as much context as possible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop. It is pretty old, I know. This laptop is something I have used for years and it has stopped working multiple times. The webcam which I used a lot failed(This works now), the hard drive has messed up before(This has been fixed), and the battery on the laptop can't hold a charge(I have a battery pack).

So I could no longer use my laptop at school because they know longer supported Vista on their network. I had a friend upgrade my laptop to Windows 7. It's hard to remember what happened before Windows 7 but I believe the fan was blowing when in use and the laptop got pretty hot. But shortly after getting Windows 7, the laptop's fan got extremely loud. Whenever the laptop is opened, the fan is roaring.

Even though the fan was loud, the laptop still worked like normal. I'd say with Windows 7, it works a lot better now. I often keep the laptop on my bed. I believe one day(maybe two weeks ago or slightly more) I fell asleep with it on the edge and it ended up falling and hitting the wooden front part of the bed. I don't think it hit the floor anything as I have things close to my bed which should catch the laptop before that happens.

Of course, a drop or a hit is never good for a laptop but things were still working fine. A few days later, I wanted to tweet something about a TV show I was watching so I grabbed my laptop. Again, it was working fine and then...some static was across the entire screen. I could still make out the website I was on. I thought to turn to the laptop off and then turn it back on as that fixes most problems.

Well, it didn't. The laptop turns on. I can tell by the light. But the screen is black. I've turned it off and back on and nothing helps. I've asked some friends about it.

One friend seems to think it overheated, the drop could have knocked something loose, or the graphics card gave out. I did take it to tech support at my school. The guy take a VGA cable and plugged it up to a monitor and nothing happened. That doesn't eliminate any of the problems but it makes the graphics card giving out or something being knocked loose more likely.

tldr: My laptop recently got Windows 7. It worked fine for a long time. It ended up falling off of my bed and hitting part of the bed. A few weeks later, the screen turned to static, I turned it off, and now the laptop screen is black.

A bit concerned about Lenovo laptop's security

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:26 PM PST

I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo laptop and am a bit concerned about it's security:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/how-an-email-sparked-a-squabble-over-chinese-owned-lenovos-role-at-pentagon/2016/04/22/b1cd43d8-07ca-11e6-a12f-ea5aed7958dc_story.html

    https://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2013-07/spy-agencies-have-banned-lenovo-computers-because-theyre-chinese

Members of the British and Australian defence and intelligence communities say that malicious modifications to Lenovo's circuitry – beyond more typical vulnerabilities or "zero-days" in its software – were discovered that could allow people to remotely access devices without the users' knowledge. The alleged presence of these hardware "back doors" remains highly classified.

    https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=29497693&sid=ddf3e32512932172454de515091db014#p29497693

Before booting windows 7 or 8, the bios checks if C:\Windows\system32\autochk.exe is the Lenovo one or the original Microsoft one. If it is not the lenovo one, it moves it to C:\Windows\system32\0409\zz_sec\autobin.exe, and then writes it's own autochk.exe. During boot, the Lenovo autochk.exe writes a LenovoUpdate.exe and a LenovoCheck.exe file to the system32 directory, and sets up a services to run one of them when an internet connection is established. I don't know too much exactly what those do, but one appears to phone home to http://download.lenovo.com/ideapad/wind ... 2_oko.json which is a bit worrying with the combination of a "ForceUpdate" parameter shown and the lack of ssl, making it fairly likely that it's exploitable for remote code execution by anyone who can intercept your traffic(public wifi, etc).

I'm planing on doing a system wipe when I get it, but hardware exploits seem to be unfixable. I'm not super hyped about the possibility of some dude in China being able to see everything on my laptop. I'm I being paranoid?

    Pro-mac, Anti-PC stigma

    Posted: 01 Dec 2017 12:12 AM PST

I am currently looking to get a new laptop to replace my old MacBook Air. However, this isn't another post asking for advice as to what I should buy. I've got my mind set on waiting for the XPS 15 9570 as my current computer can still perform day to day tasks but suffers when subjected to anything more. I've noticed that most of my classmates are massive Apple fans and automatically assume that non-macs are cheap and old-tech. I was wondering if this is merely because I go to school in a rather well-off suburb or if this stigma is everywhere. I've even been warned by my dad that the computer, despite being better in almost every way, will still get looked down at because of the lack of an apple logo on it. Money isn't an issue so the latest top-of-the-line MacBook pro is also an option but I prefer the XPS 15 for many reasons including a stronger GPU, windows operation system, upgradability, and cost. What's your opinion on this stigma surrounding non-macs and do you think it should have any bearing on the machine I purchase?

    laptop usage as software student

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:45 PM PST

I recently bought what I thought was a steal of a gaming laptop. Now I'm in my first semester at uni, I realize a few things. First, a 17" laptop is not easy to carry around, despite its thin profile. Second, this thing has garbage battery life (I originally wrote it off as something I don't care about...). Finally, I don't even have that much time to game. Now I'm contemplating selling this and replacing it with something more portable.

I want to get a laptop I can easily bring to class and have it last the entire day. I want it to be powerful enough to develop on, for simple programs to larger projects. I want it to be fairly high quality, and it'd be great if it was easy to take notes on.

(I'm new to this, and don't really know what's realistic to expect. How much power will I need for software projects? Nothing I've done yet needs much horsepower, but I've only done quite simple projects. )

In essence, I want a cheap, portable laptop with excellent battery life that's good enough to compile and run bigger projects on. What sort of specs/prices/models should I shoot for under these goals?

(My own thoughts say 8th gen i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD should be roughly okay. I'm mostly not sure about the processor.)

    hP Pavilion DV6-2020ca temperature questions

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:08 PM PST

One of my laptops, my beloved HP Pavilion DV6-2020ca (this machine on HP's site: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-dv6-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-series/4011364/model/4041711) has a temperature thing. My friend noticed that it was running at 53 degrees on idle. The fan is always on. However, it never goes above 65 degrees, even under load.

I rebuilt this laptop several times. The heatsink is stock, but I replaced the fan and the thermal paste. It's running Elementary OS, and has an AMD Athlon II M300. I don't have much experience with AMD stuff, so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior.

Thanks, and any insight is very much appreciated. I would very much like to get this laptop up and running like new again.

HP Spectre x360 13.3" OR Lenovo Yoga 920 13.9" VIBES

Lenovo Yoga 920 Vibes 13.9" with 4K Display, 8th Generation Core i7-8550U, 1TB SSD and 16 GB of RAM OR HP Spectre x360 13.3" with 4K Display, 8th Generation Core i7-8550U, 1TB SSD and 16 GB of RAM These are some of the differences between the two laptops:

    HP • 16 GB RAM " DDR3 ". • 1080p Camera with IR sensor. • Support fast charging. ≈ 50% in 30 minutes • Anti Visual-hacking with new display security. • Bluetooth 4.2. • Has Accelerometer, Gyroscope and Ecompass sensors. • Comes with HP Active Pen • 1.29 K.G

Lenovo • 16 GB RAM " DDR4 ". • 720p Camera WITHOUT IR sensor. • Far-field Microphone. • Bluetooth 4.1. • Does not have Accelerometer, Gyroscope or Ecompass sensors. • Comes with Lenovo Active Pen 2 which support 4069 levels of pressure sensitivity.. which I think is the best. • 1.37 K.G

I want to buy one of these laptops, so I want to know your opinion about what you're gonna choose considering the design, performance, battery life and sensors.

    Spare laptop - what do?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 02:40 PM PST

A relative was going to toss a perfectly good laptop (well, perfectly good less a non-functioning hard disk). It's a Dell of 2012 manufacture and came with Win 7.

I have another laptop that I used to run dual boot, Windows and Linux, but I scratched that in favor of Windows only. Maybe I can use this spare laptop as a dedicated Linux machine. Maybe a Linux machine that is always connected via VPN.

    Any other ideas for uses?

Buying a refurb – how to check everything is up to scratch

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 04:31 PM PST

After looking around for a while for a new laptop, I found a refurbished HP Probook on Brazil's equivalent of ebay (the page is here in case anyone is interested).

The seller has a decent reputation on the site, and has offered to extend the 3 month guarantee to 6 months. And the specs are much better than anything new I could get for the same price, so I reckon I might take the plunge. The purchase is also covered by the website, if the laptop doesn't meet the described condition I can send it back and get 100% refund.

    So two questions...

    1. Before buying, is there any information you think I should get confirmed, beyond the basic specs as given in the advert?

    2. When it arrives, how should I test it to make sure everything is above board? I've been advised to put it through its paces early and quickly. Any suggestions on what that should include?

(Also: any comments about the Probook itself are also very welcome! Specs look great, is there anything I'm missing?)

    Reliable Windows Ultrabooks?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:30 PM PST

I'm looking for a Windows ultrabook for less than $1300 CAD that'll keep working for 5+ years. Something with the most recent tech would be great since I'll be keeping it for a while. Is this possible? Something light, 13" screen or more, smooth trackpad, doesn't feel flimsy, and okay battery life. I'll be using it for casual photo editing and web browsing.

Just quickly browsing Reddit and reviews on Amazon it seems like a lot of consumer Windows laptops have issues in some way or another. I have a 2009 Macbook Pro and my wife has a 2011 Macbook Pro and they've both run great, slowly, but great.

I really like the Spectre x360 but reading anything about it online in a comment section makes me want to run away. I've read the XPS 13/15 can be hit or miss. How's the Yoga 720/920? Should I go business class? I'm thinking I might wait for HP's Elitebook x360 to come out with the 8th gen processors but the price matches Macbook Pros and Microsoft Surface laptops. Not a fan of how the Thinkpad's look. Thanks!

    Freedos

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:13 PM PST

Hello. I have been using my Lenovo Y700 for over a year now and this has happened to me just a few hours ago. I installed new Nvidia 388.43 driver, and while watching youtube, my programs started to freeze one by one. At some point I couldn't even open Start menu, so I tried to open Task Manager, which froze aswell. I rebooted my laptop using the power button and it booted to Freedos screen. It asks to put in date, time and then it just says C:/. Whatever I type in, says file not found afterwards. Tried to change the boot settings in BIOS, tried disabling USB boot and all other things I found in forums. There is no solution to this, all the people that are complaining about this are with fresh Laptops with no OS. I did have windows10 and been using them for more than a year. Any ideas what I could do? The harddrive is detected in the BIOS. Did my OS just delete itself? My windows were installed on SSD I believe. Would appreciate any help. I am really a "noob" when it comes to PCs and don't know what to research.
