Computer monitor extremely dim after computer wakes up from sleep; appears to be a Windows problem

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:20 PM PST

After I installed a bunch of updates for Windows 10 on my brand-new computer, whenever my monitor wakes from sleep, it is incredibly dim. After a while, it brightens back up, but it's really annoying. I couldn't find any reviews of my monitor complaining about this, but I found some people saying it's a Windows 10 problem. This makes sense because occasionally, the screen will be at my monitor's set brightness for a split-second, then go dim again. Also, when I go to my monitor's settings to brighten the screen, it brightens suddenly, not gradually, and when I turn the brightness back down to where I have it normally (at 0), the screen isn't super dim anymore.

I've read that this could be due to adaptive brightness being on, but that wasn't the issue. My "generic display" was enabled in Device Manager, and the drivers are up to date, so that shouldn't be the issue. Updating my already-enabled graphics card's drivers didn't solve the problem either. I looked here for a fix and learned that a newer update may have caused this, and going through color calibration again fixed the issue for a lot of people, but it didn't do anything for me. I can't find any way to adjust the brightness from within Windows 10, only through my monitor's menu.

How do I fix this problem?

Girlfriend installs malware all of the time.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:07 AM PST

I am basically looking for a way to restrict my girlfriends user account on her laptop from installing any EXE and basically locking it down so she, nor nefarious applications can install things that shouldn't be there, on her system. Is there any way aside from GPO or regedit to do so? Third party apps are welcomed.

I'm not opposed to using GPO, but I would rather not since if I were to do it the way I want to, I'd have to install Windows Server on a machine and use that as the DC.

I do get quite tired of going back to a clean restore point every two weeks.

And yes, I have tried explaining to her that she doesn't need that flash installer to play that game that doesn't really exist.

Best terminal to connect to linux running in virtualbox via ssh?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:02 PM PST

I have a windows 10 PC that I want to run linux on (command-line is more than enough), but the win10 version is too old to support "bash on windows" (and I can't upgrade because corporate policy - I do have full admin priviledges though). I was thinking of running virtualbox and ssh:ing to it by using the git bash shell, but I can't find a good terminal application.

Either the terminal eats the alt key (like cmd.exe, which surprisingly works really well otherwise, sans 256 color support), it will crash all the time (conemu) or the terminal will corrupt itself (mintty git bash).

Is there any terminal emulator that just works, that doesn't have a billion bells and whistles? Not crashing, not corrupting itself and preferably 256 color support are my only requirements.

[Help] Want a custom Firewall policy whitelist that excludes as much default rules as possible. I don't know what the default rules mean and what they effect.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 01:36 PM PST

I'd like to customize the Windows Defender Firewall With Advanced Security to block as much traffic as possible. I'd like this whitelist to block everything except a few things like: Firefox, Steam games, Windows Store, etc.

The problem I'm faced with is that I don't know what the majority of the default outbound rules do and/or effect. For example, the Xbox related rules. I don't use any xbox services, aside from Game Mode. I don't need Cortana to search the web since I do all my web searches using Firefox. Most of the Apps that come installed with Windows 10 I really don't use, therefore would like to exclude those from my whitelist.

    This is my goal:

    • Download Apps from Store and whatever network related features each App needs
    • Use any desktop application and whatever network related features they need
    • Browse the web with any browser I choose
    • Seed/Leech with torrent client
    • Upload/Download from Usenet
    • Use GITHub from Visual Studio or any other GIT UI I have installed.
    • Block all Windows telemetry.
    • Finally, block everything else.

I experimented with making a customized list of rules I thought would work, but I came across a few issues. One was the inability to install programs that use "web" installers. Firefox, for example, is one such installer. I tried adding a custom outbound rule for the web installer executable, but was unable to download anything.

"Troubleshooting" link Redirection on [Technet](https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/): - navigation error or Designed behavior? (I'm asking)

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:35 PM PST

Check out the following two links under the heading "Troubleshooting:"

    1. How to use TechNet to solve technical problems
    2. Look up event IDs and error codes

Upon Clicking, lead me to: HERE

I wanted to look up an error code earlier and that led me to discovering the "links-in-question." Is this a bug, or flaw or something else? I would like for you guys to "learn me some knowledge" on this matter.

Transfer admin settings and programs to standard user profile in Windows 10

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:26 AM PST

I am trying to create a standard user account in windows 10. I currently have an administrator one, but I want to transfer all of my user settings, browser settings/ adons, and programs to the standard user account. Is this even possible? I want to do this due to malware concerns. I don't want to change every setting in the standard account to mirror the admin one. And I don't want to repeat all my browser tweaks in the standard one either. I saw someone mention creating a standard user and downgrading the current account from admin and then upgrading the second profile to admin, but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea or not. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Windows 2000 SP3 .exe installer needed

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:43 AM PST

    morning folks

Trying to install a driver for a Windows 2000 SP2 PC from ~2001/2002 and the driver requires a newer version of Windows Installer, which in turn needs Windows 2000 SP3 at a minimum. Microsoft seems to have taken down the SP3 .exe download from their website. Anyone have the file or know where to find it? I believe Winworldpc.com only offers isos not .exe files.

    EDIT: Found it: https://www.techspot.com/community/topics/windows-2000-service-pack-3-available.2258/

Plugging in HDMI throws all my windows to random displays - Win 8.1

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:10 AM PST

So I bought a new 4k tv and was pretty excited, but that was soon crushed, as every time i turned the tv on, my computer would think it was a newly added HDMI device and shuffled my desktop around between all of my displays. (I have 2 monitors + TV, second monitor is often off)

Effectively whatever i was doing got thrown to my powered off monitor. Even though my "Main" monitor is always on.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

I tried some registry things and taping off pin19 of HDMI, but nothing worked. The pin19 taping didn't even give me a signal to the tv.

Can i force all windows to the Main display when shit gets detected or something similar?

    Thanks

*WE WANT YOU!* Grassroots Last Ditch Effort to Upgrade Windows Holdouts?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 04:58 PM PST

I've posted the link to the Windows 10 Accessibility update on my personal Facebook page, and I've offered to update and repair friends and family's computers for free before the New Year.

It's now occurring to me that there ought to be a more organized effort or way to reach out to friends and family who have hesitated and held out this long to update to the safest and fastest Windows.

I don't have a public page to promote an ad to reach people through the Facebook Advertising tool (to target Windows 7 and Windows 8 users), but maybe someone here knows someone who wants to promote a campaign to do this?

I am offering free upgrade and maintenance assistance to all my friends and family in exchange for the option to donate to Unidos por Puerto Rico, a nonprofit organization donating directly to causes for those affected by Hurricane Maria.

Let's make this a thing, before the New Year to create new resolutions. ;-) #DoTheThing #InsidersAssemble

EDIT: Here's the link to the upgrade website in question!

How do I change files/folders from read only to writable?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:52 PM PST

So, Windows the fucknugget it is, won't let me change read only in a folder that I, the sole user on this PC and hard drive, change the folder from read only to writable. The folder was just made and is 100% empty.

Also, fresh install of Windows. Windows itself is on another drive (SSD).

Help, Windows colour scheme is driving me nuts!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:46 AM PST

    Hello,

I am having the issue described in this article from cnet. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/turn-off-color-scheme-warnings-on-windows-7/

I have followed the instructions, unchecked the required box but I am still receiving the alerts on every new boot when I run a full screen game (which is all of them).

It is supposed to be a low resources warning but 1) my computer is very good, and certainly not low on resources and 2) I don't care if it is. There is nothing mission critical on my machine and if the performance dips I either won't care or will resolve it myself.

How do I make these messages permanently go away? (Ps, using Win7 Pro)

    Thanks!

I have a brand new laptop and I want to add a new SSD to it. I am wondering what, if anything, I should keep from the old hard drive, allowing me to fallback/recover to a factory install on it.

    Posted: 28 Dec 2017 11:37 PM PST

This is the partition map of a brand new Dell laptop.

    https://i.imgur.com/fpFA67d.png

What do you suppose is in each of those three recovery partitions?

I'd like to add a new SSD to the laptop and then reinstall Windows.

I'd like to wipe much of the old hard disk, but I would like to keep it in a state where I could remove the new SSD, and then reset the machine to its factory state.

I'm completely okay with just reformatting OS (C:) and leaving the other recovery partitions and the EFI partition unchanged. If I do that, should I be able to reset the machine?

I've also considered splitting that OS (C:) partition up, and using the space to dual boot linux, or just create an additional number of partitions in it.

In pre EFI days, I think I could do that by turning that partition into a logical partition. Do I still need to do that?

It connects but with limited access and it has been giving me a message that the router were using is unsupported. I'd appreciate any help you can throw my way.

So, is Windows 10 eventually going to brick our computers?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:32 PM PST

Imagine you have a computer from 3 years ago that has the best and most durable components. You also have hundreds of spare parts for all things inside the computer and keep clones and clones of clones of your SSD. Will there be a point where your computer will no longer work because of Windows 10 always forcing you to upgrade? Will windows 10 upgrade your computer into unusable obsolescence one day? If so how do I halt the process before it is too late if I have no desire to ever purchase another computer and only ever wish to keep fixing this monster?
