At the risk of sounding ridiculous ded. Video ram

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 10:41 AM PST

Hi, you all were so helpful the other day so I thought I'd ask my next question. My laptop is dead, white dot/black screen dead. I want to reinstall Sims 4 on my old laptop that I played it on all the time. But it says my dedicated video is ridiculously low. Like can't even run Sims 2. I used to run both these well and in past CYRI tests, passed with flying colors. Is there something I did to make this crazy jump?

Please tell me if I'm making a mistake

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 02:25 PM PST

Just ordered an Asus rog 'scar' edition 17.3 inch, i7 7700hq, gtx1060 6g, 16g ram, 256g pcie ssd, 1T ssd and I paid $2100CAD. Was this a foolish price to pay? Still lots of time to cancel but I don't see many comparable. Msi appear to be the only options with comparable specs at similar prices. This is near the upper end of my budget.

    Experience with manufacturer's warranty service

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:52 AM PST

I'm thinking of getting another laptop with the graphics card really being the primary decision driver.

I have owned two Dells in a row with meh gpu options but have always bought a couple years of the premium service and have always needed it. I currently have an XPS 15 that is 4ish years old now (gt 750m). I think between the two systems I've had 2 main board replacements, 4 graphics card replacements, a screen replacement, a speaker replacement, and a keyboard replacement. The cost of these repairs would have equated to several new systems in between my regular purchases.

Because of the difficulty of repairing laptops on my own and my experience with needing service, manufacturer support is very important to me. Dell has been good to me in this regard. The tech comes to my home with the part and does the repair.

Has anyone had experience with other manufacturers premium service options? I'm currently looking at an Alienware 15 to get a little bit ahead on the gpu front but spec wise there are certainly other systems that I could save money on if I could trust the warranty support.

Anyone know who can be trusted to make good with regard to busted laptops? I'm really looking at a gtx 1070 option now as well so any opinions about options w.r.t. that would be swell as well. Halp.

    Choosing between these gaming laptops

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:04 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking to finalize on one of these laptops:

    • Lenovo Legion Y720 - GTX1060 (The only 17" laptop on this list)
    • Aero 15 - GTX1060
    • Alienware 15 R3 - GTX1060
    • MSI GS63VR - GTX1060
    • MSI GE63VR - GTX1060
    • Acer Predator G3 - GTX1060
    • Razer Blade 14" - GTX1060

As I live in Hong Kong, the prices are quite different to the ones in the USA. I've been scouring different shops, online sites, and any deals that I could find. There is no Clevo or Sager here, so please do not recommend those.

Out of the list, I'd love your input on the ones that would have the best build quality and the best cooling, as everything else wouldn't matter as long as it comes with a GTX1060. From my research, the Alienware and the Aero 15 are the ones that stand out at the moment.

More ram or sSD for speed?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:58 AM PST

have 2 laptops at the same price. Both have i3-6006U but one offers 8gb ram/ 1tb hdd, and the other offers 4gb ram/ 126gb ssd. The goal is multitasking (browsing, word, pdf etc.) gaming is not a factor. which of these options will deliver more speed?

Bonus question: going for practical value but on low budget here, so is i3 good enough or is i5 definitely worth the extra 100?

    Help me find a laptop?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 10:42 AM PST

I'm looking for a good laptop in the $300-$600 range with that is 11-14 inch in size and pretty thin. I don't need it to run any games but I would like to run some creative software (Photoshop, drawing software, etc) on it. I don't want any of those 32 gig machines as they don't have enough space. A convertible woul be preferable and a backlit keyboard would also be nice.

Anyone know about the HP 14-bp069sa 14" Laptop?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:02 AM PST

I need a new laptop and this one is on sale at the moment in the UK.

    It looks pretty good for the price of £399.99 Save £250.00: * Windows 10 * Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor * RAM: 4 GB / Storage: 128 GB SSD * Full HD display - 14" * Battery type 3-cell Lithium-ion * Battery life Up to 11.5 hours

(how do you do bullett lists in Reddit?)

My only concern is the 4GB of RAM - 8GB would be better. I can't see if it can be upgraded.

I will go and see it in person, but until I do, does anyone have any thoughts?

Will mainly be running Google Docs, Word, WordPress in Chrome, and Photoshop to do very basic image saving/compression.

    Thanks!

UHD 620 vs Iris Plus 540

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 09:26 PM PST

I currently have a Surface Pro i7 6th gen, with 16gb and the iris plus GPU. I am considering upgrading to an 8th gen XPS 13 whilst their cyber week deals are on. It's an 8550u with 16gb and integrated graphics (UHD 620).

Just wondered if anyone had thoughts on how this would perform for Photoshop / Dreamweaver and general browsing (no gaming)?

    XPS 15 or UX550VD

    Posted: 30 Nov 2017 12:48 AM PST

I just bought for Black Friday an Asus UX550VD ( 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD)

For 150€/$ more, I can get a XPS 15, (same CPU and GPU but 16GB ram, 512GB SSD). (I was going to change the SSD for a 512GB anyway (so +200$/€, but I won't be able to upgrade the RAM) I'm seriously thinking about returning the UX550VD, and buying the XPS15 instead. Is there any reason to not do it ?
