Is buying a convertible just to watch content in tent/stand mode a stupid idea?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:05 AM PDT

I will be working from home soon and my setup will be work laptop + dual 24" monitors. I need to buy a new laptop for personal use, and I'm leaning towards a convertible like the Envy x360.

While working, the new laptop will be used for streaming sports and movies and such. I want the convertible so that I can keep the laptop keyboard out of view, rather than having it bumping up against my main keyboard.

I am not going to be travelling for work with my personal laptop, so I've considered a detachable but the Surface Pro 8, and even 7, is just too expensive for me. I'm sure the new Dell XPS detachable will be too expensive as well. Budet <$1300 USD for a well spec'd machine.

I know that I can get better performance out of non-x360 devices for the same price. So, is it dumb to buy the convertible simply for this use case? Or, do people have innovative ways of hiding the keyboard so I can buy a nice ultraportable like the Envy 13, XPS 13, or even maybe Macbook Air? Thanks.

    Need help...

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 10:35 AM PDT

I'm a university student in management and I'm looking for a new laptop since mine is currently dieing. Next year I want to learn python programming and data analysis, but I don't know which laptops and processers are more suitable for my needs.

This new laptop will be used for studying, working and programming only, I don't really care about gaming.

My budget is around 900-1000€ but a cheaper option is more than welcome.

    I've already selected 3 options:

    New XPS 13 Laptop i5-1135G7

    Razer Book i5-1135G7

    Lenovo Thinkpad E15-G2

Is any of these laptops a good option? What do you recommend?

Obs: I'm in Portugal btw. I feel like our laptop market have few options.

Acer Swift 3 vs Lenovo Thinkpad p14s Gen 2 // UK

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 10:30 AM PDT

Both of these laptops are at their best ever price in the UK for £599 and £623 respectively.

Which one of these two would be best for a student at University, that might be doing some light coding / data analysis, streaming and using multiple tabs. I imagine both could handle this sort of leg work?

Is one more futureproof than the other?

Never used Thunderbolt 4, is this a potential game changer?

I think the swift looks nicer and has a longer battery life, would that be more important in my case than the slightly better processor on the Lenovo?

I'm very torn between these two currently, partly as the ThinkPad appears to be such a bigger and better discount than the Acer swift.

EDIT: Having Windows Professional over Windows Home makes no difference to me for what it will be used for, is this a possible factor as to why the Lenovo ThinkPad is typically around £1k without a discount?

Gaming laptop, between 900 and 1000 euros, Belgium

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:59 AM PDT

Hi everyone, here is the questionnaire and I apologize because my English is very bad. I hope to be understandable, I am available for any clarification or misunderstanding. Thank you :)

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Between 900 and 1000 €, in Belgium.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I don't really like it but I remain open to this option if necessary.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
build quality and performance, it's for playing and I hope to keep it as long as possible.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
No preference here, it will mostly stay in my home
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
It's for playing. The games I spend the most time on are strategy/management games. Some examples: Paradox games (Hoi4, Eu4, soon Vicky3, etc), Total War. There are also other games like "the long dark", "Enderal Forgotten stories", "Outer Wilds", some now quite old FPS, etc. The only really greedy game (according to my meager knowledge) that I play are anno 1800.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I have already made a small list above. But I would like to at least be able to run Anno 1800 even if it's in minimum quality. I take this game as a "benchmark" because it seems to me that it is the most resource-intensive game.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Here I don't really know, I don't have any particular requirements. I would say reliable build quality is very important to me. I don't have a big money so I'm hoping to buy a laptop that will last as long as possible. Durability is really very important to me.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm really bad at computers that's why I think a laptop, with the simplicity of use that I assume, seems like a good idea. Besides, it seems to me that I don't need a war machine given the games I like. I would also like to specify that it will be a real plus if I could buy it in these two Belgian stores: Vanden Borre and Krëfel. I live in a very small town and am a person with reduced mobility. These two stores are in my "town" and it will be infinitely easier for me to return my purchase in case of problems. (I had found in one of these stores the MSI GF63 Thin 10UC-477BE, but I don't know what it's worth) Thank you very much for your help :)

    Which laptop for a film student? ~ 1500 € | France

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:39 AM PDT

    Hello,

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~ 1500 €
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance, build quality, battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      I don't really care
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" or 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll run video/photo editing software (Adobe Suite)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Gaming not my priority, maybe light gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I will necessarily need 16Go RAM, at least 512Go SSD, and an AZERTY keyboard
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will use this laptop probably every day for at least 3 years so I want to choose wisely and the choice is not that easy, this is why I'd be glad to get some recommendations.

    Thank you for helping!
