Suggestions for dad's network security at Assisted/Independent Living facility? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 08:30 AM PDT My father just moved from a house to an independent/assisted living facility nearby. The monthly rent includes Crapcast Xfinity wi-fi internet, which unfortunateley is gobs slower than the gigabit fiber he had at the house. Like 10 to 30 Mbps down. But we got his Apple TV hooked up and everything seems to stream just fine. Our concern, though, is with security. The facility wi-fi does have password security, but everyone uses the same password. Doesn't seem very secure to me. Even though it does seem unlikely anything would happen since it's all a bunch of old folks living there. But still, anyone visiting someone with the password could potentially see or access someone else's sensitive info, like banking etc. And with all the scammers these days targeting the elderly, it just doesn't seem like a good situation. They told my dad that he can get Xfinity to add a separate cable modem inside his apartment unit so that he can have his own private network. But then that would be an additional cost over the already exoribtant monthly rent. What about a VPN service? My concern with that of course is slowing down data speeds even more. Any suggestions? New routers have worse Wifi performance? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 02:00 PM PDT I've been using a TP-Link Archer C7 for 7+ years now. It has a pretty good 5Ghz wifi connection when nearby but the coverage range is a little short for the house I moved to so I wanted to upgrade. I bought a TP-Link AX11000 from Costco which is supposedly highly rated. The range has indeed improved, however, there is a lot of consistent lag and rubber-banding when playing games. My pc is close to the router but ethernet is not possible at the moment. I switched back and forth between the two routers for testing and there is only lag with the new router. I thought maybe it was the model or a defective unit so I returned it and opted to try a Netgear AX5400 (RAX54) also from Costco. Unfortunately I also experience the same issues with this router and am considering returning this as well. I have checked the channels nearby and there does not seem to be much interference from neighbors. Is there something I am missing? All general internet uses seem fine but gaming is very laggy. Any advice would be appreciated! [link] [comments]
Netgear R7000 Router Causing Slow Ethernet Speeds? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:58 PM PDT Pretty much title. I get 150 Mbps through 5g wifi. I get 3Mbps through wired connection from router. I get a little over 160 Mbps when I connect directly from the modem with the same Ethernet cable (although I have tried others.) I have reset the router and modem, I have factory reset the Router, I have updated firmware on the Router, I have manually updated firmware to an old release on the router to one I saw people saying was better than the most recent. This happens on my laptop and on my xbox. I do not know what to do. The only resolution I saw when looking up this issue is someone had an iffy cable, other than that most threads were dead. It worked fine like a week ago before I updated my firmware and added QoS. Again, I have since rolled back and have not reapplied the Qos after factory resetting the device. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:32 PM PDT I recently went from a copper line to a FTTP fibre line. But my ISP also changed the router I have from a TalkTalk Sagemcom CS 50001, 92848 RUEIL CEDEX (talktalk superhub) router to a Amazon EERO 6 (1 single basic one). I think the EERO 6 is even worse than my previous router. I went from 70 down 20 up to 150 down 35 up. The problems I am having are that games consoles do not connect consistently on 5GHZ but do on 2.4GHZ but i do not have the option to choose the range ( did on previous router). When multiple devices ( 10-13) are on the network, say 2 movie streams, games console, phones n laptops) some devices are having poor quality ( netflix loading during movies...) which did not happen before. I do not have the option to use ethernet outside of the room the router and fibre line are placed into and I do not have the option of powerline ehternet adapters ( tried this ran into eletric issues etc) so i'm stuck with WIFI. I essentially need to know why the new router with the faster download speeds and upload speeds is causing my webpages to load slow and overall give me the impression that the internet is a lot slower than before ( but speedtest and fast . com say otherwise) however, i have noticed latency has gone up on the games console and the wireless signal has gone down ( the new router is about 5 ft closer than the old router... the placement was kept the same as it was decent enough before and the speeds are faster now so I assumed at the very least, the new router would be good enough? ) What do I do to get better wifi? additional mesh router? or does network bridging work? is there other options as i just want a very strong wifi connection that will not make using the internet feel sluggish. New TP Router making faint 'noise'. Is this normal for routers? Faulty? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:49 PM PDT Set up my Archer AX20 router yesterday and it's working great. TP-Link support just told me as it's 'internal noise and we dont know what it is from our end, best to get a replacement from Amazon'. It' just honestly sounds like it's 'doing it's thing' and working, albeit annoying. Thank you [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:42 PM PDT Hello, This is my first post and i'm a noob in this subject. I have a RT-AC86U ASUS Router and use OpenVPN (NordVPN). I had a 100mbs ISP speed and recently upgraded to 400mbs. On 100mbs, with openvpn, i was getting full speed. With 400mbs, i am only getting 200-200mbs. I'm wondering if there's a way to make the speed higher and take advantage of my new ISP speed while having OpenVPN on. Sorry for my bad english and poor choice of words. Thank you [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:35 PM PDT Hello, I am specifically looking for a way to connect a sim card to a desktop computer directly and use LTE mobile data instead of getting a dedicated 4G router. I found something on a website (won't post link so it is not considered an advertisement but it is a no-brand card so there is a photo), and it pretty much consists of a slot for the sim card, a mini-pcie connector for a 4G or WiFi module, a voltage switch (depending on what you are going to use it for - WiFi or 4G), a usb connector (labeled as usb 'signal'), a sata connector for power but at the same time it plugs into the pcie slot on the motherboard. Now, this being nobrand card, I am quite curious if it will work at all and why would it need an external power source considering it is plugged in the pcie slot of the motherboard? Problem with Site2Site-VPN with two routers at one site Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:33 PM PDT Dear network experts, I have an openWRT-Router and tried to setup a VPN on a virtual pfsense (only just because the setup on pfsense is very easy for me), the problem is in my configuration I am not able to reach the devices from the clients, only from the routers itself. Image: https://i.ibb.co/H4jcxQf/Network-Problem2.png In the image I tried to draw my network configuration, I think it has maybe something to do with the point, that an network packet has to pass a gateway twice (check the description why), but I don't know another solution than avoiding one of the two routers at Site A. I don't know where the problem is exactly comes from, but if I set pfSense (VM) as GW for PC A, I am able to reach the full Site A, so maybe the problem has to do with openWRT. First I tried openVPN and now I am on IPSec VPN, but the problem is the same, maybe I simply forget something to config in openWRT, firewall rules for pfsense are set correctly I think. Does anybody see the reason or do you need additional information? Kind Regards. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:15 PM PDT What's the best way to connect an ethernet router with RJ45 for WAN to a VDSL2 network that uses RJ11 ? Is it possible to use an adapter directly RJ11 to RJ45 , or I have to connect a Modem then take an Ethernet cable from it to the Ethernet router ? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Weird error downloading games on PlayStation consoles. Maybe a network setting? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:00 PM PDT This started after upgrading to the Motorola MG8702 to take advantage of faster internet speeds and docsis 3.1. (I had an old Arris sb before this with the puma chipset that would dip all the time.) Any time I try to download more than a couple games on my PS5/3/VitaTV, it will inevitably pop up a "Can't Download" error and skip a few. The errors just display a generic message about not being able to connect to the server, but it usually skips 1-3 games and goes on to whatever is next. I thought it was just a weird quirk with my PS5 that may have come on after an update, but I got a PS Vita TV and after downloading 3 games, it skipped 3 with Can't Download errors before continuing with rest. Once this happened, I dug out my ps3 just to see and sure though it did the same thing. I've tried: Different DNS servers (Google), a replacement Modem/router, switching internet provider, Upgrading from 500 down to gigabit, resetting the modem, factory resetting all of the consoles, using wireless instead of wired. It just seems so strange that it appears to be happening with any of my Playstation consoles. Nothing like this ever happens with my xbox downloads or switch and when the vita errored out last, I was watching a stream and the internet was solid the entire time. The error code on the PS5 when it happens is NW-102633-5 which I can barely find anyone talking about online. I'm past my return limit on the modem or else I'd probably just return it for something else. Any insight or ideas would be appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:58 AM PDT So just picked up a 3 pack of the Linksys Velop TriBand AC2200s. Everything is running smooth but when I go to certain sites like draftkings which require a location check to see what state you're in, it continually fails. I can't for the life of me figure out what setting or what is causing this. Anyone have any advice? [link] [comments]
Suddenly poor or no WLAN at all! Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:52 AM PDT I bought a cheap(20€) tp-link accespoint a few years ago and it has been giving me nothing but problems ever since. The router/accespoint from my ISP takes care of half of the house (works great) but the tp-link accesspoint is in accesspoint mode but there are always total wifi failures. But only with the TP link accespoint. LAN also works perfectly. I have now already considered to get a unifi system. What do you say? Do you have any ideas what the problem could be? Internet not working for most things but youtube videos loading fine? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:45 AM PDT So i have Cogeco and live in Hamilton ON. My internet has been spotty for a week or so but it's been especially bad today. It's nearly unusable on my phone or any other wireless device, but it isn't just a usual outage or anything. 1, cogeco says it has no current outages 2, i can stream 1080p 60fps youtube content without even buffering, same with netflix. the pages load fine, sometimes i don't get the comments but that is the only thing that denotes a network issue 3, whenever i go to test the speed of my network, it gives me the usual speeds that i pay for (~900mbps down, ~30mbps up, 7ms of latency, ive seen 50ms under load but that was once) 4, NOTHING ELSE WORKS. Discord, Steam, any other site, they all receive an error saying either no internet connection, or that the server took too long to respond. My PC says I have internet connection as well. 5, My xbox is hardwired through the exact same connection, my pc and xbox go into a network switch which feeds back to my router. The xbox refuses to sign in and go online, but the pc works (albeit with the issues mentioned previously) Please help. This is the oddest internet conundrum i've ever faced. [link] [comments]
Will a Wi-Fi extender improve performance at a hotel? Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:58 AM PDT So this obviously isn't for my "home" but I have to go on a long business trip and the wi-fi at this particular hotel isn't very reliable. The connection itself is hit or miss and there's so many people on the network so I dont trust the security. Will a Netgear Wi-Fi extender do anything for the performance? The one I might pick up is this one https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Net-EX3110-100NAS-AC750-Range-Extender/dp/B077K3L7DQ Or would this Wi-Fi USB Adapter be better???? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:04 AM PDT My home is 1800 square feet. 3 bedrooms we have about 6 tvs 5 gaming consoles, a gaming pc, security cameras and other things that connect to our Wi-Fi.I have the CM2000 modem. I have Xfinity 1gig speed. I need great router that will be able to handle all this that will be able to cover my home with good signal strength. I was told to get the google Wi-Fi router but after a week it has been a nightmare. I'm taking it back. [link] [comments] |
