Linux Disk encryption without a password

Linux Disk encryption without a password

    Disk encryption without a password

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:16 AM PDT

My Windows 11 laptop is encrypted with BitLocker which doesn't use a password to access it but from what I've seen of Linux disk encryption needs a password to unlock the drive before it boots. Is there a disk encryption for Linux that doesn't use a password like BitLocker but instead ties it to the users account?

Can anyone recommend a webcam that works smoothly under Linux?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 10:12 AM PDT

Hi. I've been having trouble with webcams lately. Yesterday I went to Microcenter and bought a Redragon GW800 - I chose it because the box said it supports Linux. However, what I'm seeing is that I'm getting up to 2 seconds of latency, and something like 2 frames per second. It's pretty awful. On the other hand, I plug it into my Windows laptop and it works perfectly.

I'm getting really frustrated with this. I'm running OBS on both computers, but the performance is crazy different. Can anyone point me to a webcam that will Just Work for me? Ideally one that's available at Micro Center, but I'm willing to flex on that if needed. I just want to be able to record video.

Multiple Monitors + Different Refresh Rates on Wayland?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:44 AM PDT

Howdy! I have seen people have issues with multiple monitors and/or high refresh rates on Wayland, but I have not really followed any of that very much because it wasn't relevant to me. I just had one monitor at 60hz.

However I am looking at a new monitor. It is 240hz. Would having my old monitor at 60hz and the new one at 240hz together cause issues with Wayland? Is there anything else I should consider? Thanks!

I switch to Linux (arch) few months ago, I have this one issue that the emojis don’t show up on the vscode terminal, my friend who uses arch too, it works for him. I tried installing many font packages, still the same.

    Dmenu focus issue on Ubuntu

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:10 PM PDT

I have an issue with dmenu. The app rarely catches input focus and is by result barely unusable unless specific application were given the input focus prior like spotify or firefox. Other like the desktop or the gnome terminal won't hand it to dmenu.

do yall have a way to fix that or even a way to mess around with window focus settings?

Today I discovered ALT + F2. Can you give me some tips?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:23 PM PDT

Today I discovered ALT + F2 command. I feel little confused, because I use Linux almost 2 years. Can you give me some tips, how this command can help me in everyday use? I read this article, but not all commands work on my OS.

    Examples:

    • xkill works fine on Ubuntu based distro, but on Fedora (VM) not work.
    • aliases not work,
    • xkill package_name not work,
    • reboot, poweroff work,
    • some long commands not work (for example: yum list installed > ~/Documents/apps.txt),
    • this long command work: xdg-open https://www.google.com

What commands could work, and it depends on something?

What did i Installed? Arch Linux

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:01 PM PDT

Hi allI tried to install Blizzard Battlenet app but it was missing some dependencies according to this document found on lutris https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/Battle.Net.md

I installed all but lib32-gnutls which pacman was not finding so I used the AUR archive, it gave me three missing dependencies as well.

    I installed in order

gnutls - which gave me some local error in perl about default locale which I fixed, AUR package as well

gperf - which require only pacman, thank you whoever you are i love u

gtk-doc - which the errore line mentioned as gtkdocize which game me solid headache trying to find where it came from but then once i found the name was actually gtk-doc I could pacman it

then i came back to the lib32-gnutls which gave me again a gnutls error but proceeded to install everything anyway, with minutes of lines and lines of things and also some errors which I could not even see because it was too fast, I could just copypaste this suggestion to run :

    unbound-anchor -a "/etc/unbound/root.key"

which I don't understand If I must run or not. I don't know what it is at all :)

Now it seems I have installed everything but I cannot go back to the installing output to read the errors. So what should i do?

WHAT DID I INSTALL EXACTLY? O_O)

    cant boot into linux usb

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:06 AM PDT

I installed linux mint xfce a few days to my laptop {ryzen 3, 4gb ram,1tb hdd, lenovo, win 10} in dual boot by bootable USB. Everything worked normally, both linux & windows.

But it lasted only for a few days. After around 3 days when i booted into linux i saw some text which i ignored and it worked fine. Happened again the next day but genius me ignored it.

Then, I so happened to boot into windows 10. After finishing my work in win 10, I restarted to go into linux . Now here in the boot menu, linux is at #1 and windows is at #2 already. So it should've booted into linux automatically, didn't happen. So i tried again and clicked linux, still didn't happen. I then just switched it off and then tried it the next day, but the same issue.

Then i posted this in linuxfornoobs sub and was told to reinstall win 10. Didn't wanna because i paid for it and also ms office. Then the genius in me woke up again and i just formatted the drive in which linux was installed & then just combined the partitions.

I then tried to reinstall linux mint XFCE from the usb but it directly booted to windows 10 even though i selected the usb. In the boot menu i could still see linux at #1 (no idea why).

Now i want to remove linux completely and reinstall it properly {idk what mistake i made}.

My LUKS encrypted external hard drive is suddenly extremely slow. FSCK found no problems. I can decrypt the partition but I cannot mount it.

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:49 AM PDT

There are three luks encypted partitions on my external hard drive. Disk is GPT. No LVM.

I ran fsck on decrypted partitions (/dev/mapper/ID) and while it takes a long time to complete, it says the partition is "clean"

While lsblk quickly lists the partitions on the drive, GNOME Disk Utility takes ages to recognize the hard drive and it takes several minutes to recognize its encrypted partitions. Similarly, Gparted takes ages to scan the devices and partitions.

I also connected the hard drive to a Windows PC. Windows partition manager quickly displays all three partitions and say they are healthy, of course they are NOT displayed in My PC.

cryptsetup luksDump displays header and key slot information, so I guess luks header should be okay.

this is what a meltdown looks like

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 11:25 AM PDT

I'm gonna start by saying right off the bat, after completing my first year of IT studies I LOVE the ideology of freedom that underpins GNU/Linux OS and software.

It seems like everytime I try to do something to get ahead, I fail. I'm 28 and I know Cybersecurity degrees aint worth shit if that's all I have. I'm studying part time so by the time I get the degree I'll be THIrTY-FuVKInG-TWO. I'm trying to get a Python cert just to force myself to learn under the pressure of a deadline and a financial commitment. I'm TRYING to learn BASH and trying to familiarise myself with Linux but I keep meeting stumbling blocks.

The first time I tried to partition a hard drive I broke my laptop

The second time I tried to create a live usb with Ubuntu I succeeded but it seemed, only by chance.

Now my laptop is broken (see previous posts) I'm trying to make a live usb with Ubuntu but my fucking desktop constantly fails part way through downloading the ISO file even tho my WiFi has bars and everything. When I try to hotspot my mobile data (something I've done before) I select "connect" on the WiFi networks window but..nothing happens. No confirmation of selection. Just a loss of internet access.

I feel like I'm running out of time. I NEED my laptop to learn because I spend all week away from my desktop..I work split shifts throughout the day and so far I have only been able to study and learn with this laptop.

Everytime I try and boot from USB previously my laptop says that it cannot detect the media device (I've tried multiple usb ports). I used rufus and followed a tutorial.

And then today everytime I try and download refus the download fails immediately.

    Another wasted day. FML

Why is my system freezing daily?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 09:41 AM PDT

    Following up this post: https://old.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/v9fpm9/system_freezing_daily/

My system continues to get the occasional lockup, and I am out of ideas. My second monitor stops working, my primary monitor is frozen, but the mouse is able to be moved around. Everything is frozen, so I cannot launch or click onto anything or switch to the graphical terminal.

At the time of the freeze, I was running Firefox with a YouTube video playing music in the background and a few tabs open, chrome running a localhost web server, VS code, and terminal. Nothing too stressful for my system's memory. Firefox with YouTube has been running every time my system freezes, which has become a multiple-times-per-day occurrence now.

I am running Fedora 36 with a Ryzen 3600x CPU, NVIDIA 2070 Super GPU, and 16GB of memory.

Here is the journal of errors from my last boot until I manually force rebooted the machine during the freeze:

I noticed in my last post that there was also a hard lockup on CPU 6. This freezing only ever occurs on my Fedora partition and not my Windows partition. I am not sure what else to do from preventing this from reoccurring, but it is beginning to drive me crazy!

    How would they compare?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 05:52 AM PDT

I was a Linux/Unix sysadmin for about 16 years.I am curious how Linux sysadmin work compares to Windows sysadmin work?

I've never done any windows industry admin work, ie- user permissions, accounts, mail server, etc.

Which one has more to learn? Is one easier than the other?

When I got the job I had never even seen a Linux machine before, there was a lot to learn.

I've used Windows since 3.1, mainly for surfing and gaming, but I also did all the building/troubleshooting for friends and family.

    Thanks!

I was a Windows Sysadmin for 5 years but no longer. Looking to make a free ESXI homelab using linux servers. What's your recommendation for distro?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 01:28 PM PDT

I'd love to keep using Window Server (just because I'm comfortable with it) but I don't get the "free" licenses anymore. So I'm looking to setup a homelab using all linux servers. I have a little experience with Ubuntu from home projects (MagicMirror & RetroPi) but if I wanted to make a home server enviroment with web servers, file servers, (Do you even do domain controller type things?) I'm willing do go the distance and dive in, but what should I avoid or look at?
