    Simple Questions - June 04, 2022

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:00 PM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What's this on the back of my motherboard?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:06 AM PDT

I'm currently doing a case swap as well as changing the AIO cooler, but when I wanted to install the new bracket, I saw this on the back. Does anyone know how I could remove it?

    Building my first gaming pc

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 05:53 AM PDT

I'm going to be using the pc for gta, minecraft, warzone, rocket league and competitive fortnite (mostly creative) at 1080p. I would like to play at 240hz, 360hz if possible. And capture/edit my gameplay sometimes. Is this a good build? If not what should i change? My absolute budget is like 13k (NOK).

Which CPU cooler should I pick up? CPU Temp is reaching 100 degrees while playing Warzone

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:09 AM PDT

I've never replaced the thermal paste of my CPU (2 year old PC) but I do clean the computer itself often. I've noticed unexplainable fps drops and random freezes while playing Warzone lately and when I downloaded HWMonitor I noticed that the CPU temperature reaches 100 degrees while the GPU averages 80 - 85. I know Warzone is an intensive game but that's way too hot for safe operating.

I have Thermaltake TG-30 paste and I want to upgrade to an AIO liquid cooler, and these are the choices available locally:

    Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML120L V2 BLUE = $75

ASUS ROG Strix LC 120 RGB AIO Liquid CPU Cooler = $85

NZXT Kraken M22 120mm AIO RGB CPU Liquid Cooler = $85

Antec Neptune 240MM ARGB Liquid CPU Cooler = $91

Corsair LL120 Series RGB LED PWM Fan = $96

    ASUS ROG RYUO 120 = $97

GIGABYTE ATC700 RGB Dual 120mm Ball Bearing PWM = $101

Cooler Master MasterAir MA612 Stealth ARGB = $107

Corsair A500 Dual Fan CPU Cooler = $110

    Gigabyte ATC800 AORUS = $135

I know most of them are outdated and the prices are too high but that's just how they are where I live unfortunately. Which one should I go for? I have a MAG Z390 Tomahawk board & i7-9700 CPU just in case there are compatibility / dimension issues with any of those coolers.

    Thanks a lot!

Graphics Card Stuck In Motherboard. And switch won’t flip down. Has anyone else ever had something like this happen? If so how did you fix it?

PC won't turn on, motherboard LED says it's a CPU error

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 04:52 PM PDT

Edit: I'll continuing monitoring this post in case someone has any more helpful suggestions, but so far I truly think it's a motherboard issue. I'm going to order the same one and see what happens when I plug in the CPU. Depending on the outcome, I'll either RMA the board or the CPU. I'll update the post here with my findings for those that want closure to this problem!

About 2 months ago I went to turn on my PC and it refused to output any video. Since then, I've been using my mac (Haven't been gaming much, mainly used my PC for work).

Today I decided to troubleshoot the issue. I read through the manual, and it said that the red Q LED means that its a CPU issue. I'm stuck because if it was a new build, I know that I probably put the CPU in the slot wrong, or it came with a broken pin. But it's been two years that I've used this CPU.

    video: https://imgur.com/a/HP0hjiW

    Things I've done:

    - Dust out the PC

    - Move the ram sticks around

    - Move the GPU to different slots

    - Reconnected the CPU and power supply cables

    - Cleared the CMOS

    - Checked the CPU for bent pins, reseatted the CPU

I should report that about six months ago a similar issue was occurring, where I wouldn't get any video output. Moving the GPU to the second GPU slot fixed this, so I think the motherboard might be getting faulty. IIRC, the white LED was on, which correctly referred to a GPU problem.

Thank you for reading this post.

How big of a difference does a motherboard make on performance?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:19 PM PDT

I'm looking to build a PC with an i5 12400f which will be used mostly for gaming

Now I know the best mobo for this build is the MSI b660 pro, but right now it costs more than the CPU itself where I live, meanwhile I can get an ASUS h610m-a for literally half the price

Considering that I won't upgrade my CPU anytime soon, how exactly will the different motherboards affect the performance? Considering i will be using a 3060 ti, 2x8 DDR4 and an average m.2 ssd

    240mm vs 360mm AIO for 12700k

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 06:48 AM PDT

    Hey y'all,

I am dead set on getting the ASUS Ryujin II AIO for my PC build (yes, this is non-negotiable). However, the 360 version is backordered, no idea when I'll be able to get it in my rig; meanwhile, I can get the 240 for MSRP right now.

Will the 360 materially make a difference for light to moderate overclocking?

If you have let's say 3080 TI can you put it any something like 10 years old system and it would work? just a random question I had, I know about the bottleneck but if it's being supplied enough power to function will it work

    Booting problems

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 08:57 AM PDT

Okay, so recently there was a computer upgrade in my school and they switched all hdds to ssds. After that they gave the old hdds to us for free. I know its a little bit risky because you dont know what the other kids installed on it, but it was free. Obviusly they didnt delete a single file from them. It still has the windows os on it. And thats my problem right now. I just installed it in my pc and it would not load into my desktop. When I turn my computer on this happens: - It shows me the usual screen where it tells me to press del or f1 to enter bios. - After that it shows a windows 10 logo in the middle with a circle circling under it. This lasts for about 5 seconds - Then it goes blackscreen and then a slightly brighter dark greyish screen. Now I have to admit that my software skills at this level are very poor. But I think the problem is that both of my drives have windoes on them. I tried to enter my bios with both my del and my f1 key but it didnt went into the bios. Previously when I had something to do in my bios I used to boot into the bios from windows. Is it possible that my keyboard doesnt turn on fast enough to recognize me smashing the keys. I think of this because the rgb doesnt turn on while the screen where I can get into the bios is showing. I have a Hama urage exodus macro. Do you have any ideas how I can fix this?

Sorry for my bad english and my mistypes.

Can I get feedback of a first timers PC build before I purchase the parts?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 07:21 AM PDT

Hello, this will be my first attempt at building and owning a PC that I'll want to use for gaming and general use. This was all a relatively quick from deciding I'm finally going to buy one to being one click away from doing so, so needless to say I've tried to soak up as much knowledge as I can recently but I still have gaps in it and certainly not as confident in judging the quality of my build.

I have discussed with some friends as well as asked for help online in creating a PC and this what I've decided upon. My original budget was 1200 including the monitor but I was convinced to spend a little more so if possible I would like to keep any changes I would possibly make either to be reducing cost or lateral changes that keep it the same price roughly.

I defer entirely to you guys as I can't stress this enough that my enthusiasm for buying a PC is way higher than my actual ability and knowledge of building one so any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, I have a gtx 1050 ti along with i7 10700. i have pluged in my moitor's hdmi into my mother board until now. i have played heavy games like like far cry 5 or rdr 2 on optimal settings selected by my nvidia driver. i have faced no frame drop or lag until now. but recenlt someone told me to to plug in my monitors hdmi into my gtx 1050 ti to utilize it. and after doing that i can notice minor lags on those games i have played before without any lag plugging into my motherboard. can anyone tell me whats the reason? So far i;ve played many heave games whichi think utilized my gpu though it was plugged into my monitor (i've monitored temperature rising and utilization percentage og 1050ti on task manager) but after plugging into my gpu i can face minor lag and framdrop in those same games. experts please tell me the reason?

PC Case With USB C Front IO

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 08:19 AM PDT

So I've been looking at building a new PC and I'm sorta confused about front USB C ports. So what I've gathered is that there are cases with one 20 Gbps USB C port on them and then you can use a "Key-A" header on the motherboard to hook that up. Everything else is a bit of a mystery to me. I have a couple of questions:

    • Is USB 4 bringing a new motherboard header? Will that even work with USB4 Gen3 (40 Gbps) only having cable lengths of ≤ 0.8 m? I'm assuming that the 0.8 meters include the cable inside the case from the motherboard to the case. Also will there be USB 4 headers that don't operate at the 40 Gbps but instead do 20Gbps but still operate as USB 4 allowing the use of a "USB 3.1 Gen 1" cable at 20Gbps? It would be useful to no longer have to distinguish between what exact gen of USB 3 a cable is. (If I understand correctly with USB 4, all old C-to-C cables sold under any USB 3 generation will be 20 Gbps)
    • Are there cases that have multiple (like 2) slower USB C ports on them? So maybe 2.0 or USB 3 with 5 Gbps. Most of my devices are USB C by now and so it would make sense to connect for example my Xbox controller or phone with a C-to-C cable on the front of the PC.
    • If such cases exist what motherboard header would they use? I'm assuming the old USB 2.0/3 headers would not work because they have no CC pin? (Sorry if that's wrong I'm no electrical engineer)

Edit: So there is the Corsair Obsidian Series 1000D which has 2 USB-C ports on the front but that requires two headers on the motherboard and it's a gigantic case and stupid expensive. I'm more interested in something less RGB with maybe just one fast USB-C port on it and 1 or 2 slow ones in addition.

How do I fix this? I just formatted my C drive and tried installing Windows but can't because of this error.

When I choose my language and click "Install Windows" I get an error saying "NO device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, then click OK". I've tried searching on Google but I can't find a fix.

When did everything get so expensive?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 03:08 PM PDT

I'm looking at building my first PC since the mid-00s. I'm of the 939 Socket AMD Athlon CPU, GeForce 6800GT/7800GT, Seasonic PSU standard build era (or that felt like the standard at the time on websites like Overclockers)

So my frame of reference is things like £250-300 graphics, £150 processor, £120 mobo, £80 case, etc. for a build that would probably end up around £800 or so for something decent and runs most game son high settings. I remember dabbling in the idea of building a PC about 10 years ago and the prices didn't seem that far different to what they were in the mid-00s.

I'm looking now, and while I've had a fleeting awareness of how expensive the top end is/was due to cryptominers and shortages, but I didn't realise that the bottom now is as expensive as something that was closer to the top from back when.

If my reference for graphics cards is something like the 6200/6600/6800 at entery/mid/high-end levels of performance, and my understanding that the 3050/3060/3070 are entry/mid/high-end equivalents now. The entry level is same/more expensive than high end would have been, even after you adjust for inflation. Not even beginning to factor in monitors and other peripherals either.

I get that computers are far more powerful and advanced now, but in terms of relative pricing this is crazy to me. Even with prebuilts, I could have built a decent complete PC back then for the same price as entry/low-mid range these days.

What are the main factors for everything being so expensive? Is it just the norm to be expected, or is it all the mining and other things I've read about like semiconductor/silicon shortages and now the rising cost of living that has made everything explode this much?

NGL, it's not putting me off, but it's definitely been food for thought

When my new build goes to sleep, no display output and CPU debug lights up, but when I push power button everything is fine. What is wrong?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 08:58 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have built a new pc, but it gives weird behavior when it goes to sleep (see above.) I think I need to update BIOS but is that the case?

Running BIOS version 7D25v11 on MSI Pro z690-a Wifi ddr4 with Intel core i7-12700KF

Arch Linux installed on my machine

Edit: Okay, I might not have explained it clearly. After it goes to sleep, I turn on the power button, just a blank screen and CPU debug light. I shutdown with the power button and everything is fine. This has happened a lot of times and it is sorta annoying every once in a while I have to restart to get video output. What is wrong?

Upgrading my PC need some help

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 07:44 AM PDT

5 years ago I got into gaming, my uncle helped build me a pretty decent entry level pc to see if I liked it and he would upgrade it later on. My uncle has since passed and I'm not tech savvy enough to know what I need to replace and what goes with what. I guess I just need some help. I'd like to upgrade my graphics card mostly since my games only run at 60 FPS now. Here are some specs, I'm not sure what is needed so I'm just going to copy and paste. Cheers and thanks in advance for your knowledge! I don't need anything crazy over the top - just quality.

    Which CPU upgrade for photoshop?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 06:16 AM PDT

    Hi,

iam working a lot in photoshop.
Mainly increasing the size of my genitales when sending nudes.
    Just kidding.
I do a lot of photo editing and working with RAW images in lightroom.
It just bothers me so much, that when iam doing something like for example removing background and such, i need to wait a few moments after every click. It also just hurts my workflow.

Right now iam using a MSI b450 pro vdh max mainboard with a AMD Ryzen 3 2600 CPU.
    16GB RAM with 2x 8GB Vengeance 3000MHz CL16.
    GeForce RTX 3070.
Thermaltake Smart SE 630W Power Supply.

So as far as i know i should upgrade my CPU.
To get the Ryzen 7 5800x i would have to upgrade my BIOS and also get a better cooler, as the boxed cooler from my 2600 wont do it. That might cause a problem with my COOLTEK Midi Tower.
So would a Ryzen 7 3800x with the boxed cooler be a better choice right now?

I dont feel like spending a whole lot of money.
Like 350€ would be my max.

Does someone have some advice for me?
    Thanks!
