Should I keep my Samsung Galaxy S8 or switch to a Samsung Galaxy A20?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:03 PM PDT

I've been using my S8 for about a week, it was my backup phone and I broke my actual phone, so I'm using my S8, but my mom recently upgraded and gave me her old A20, and now I'm considering switching to that. Should I switch to the A20, or keep using my S8?

Helping others switch from iOS to Android

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:02 PM PDT

I have been using Android for many years now so I can't see myself having issues with getting my friend up to speed with Android, but just like everything else, as you become more knowledgeable, you can often forget to go over what is common sense to you, while it is a brand new concept to them.

Aside from the usual setup, and going over how files are stored on Android, what are some seemingly common sense concepts that someone might gloss over when aiding in the switch from iOS.

Background is that she has an SE 2, and just like the last one, is useless after 2 years (same boat with my XCover Pro after 2 years after this last major update), so she is thinking of switching, especially considering it is $240 CAD for an A53 over the 2 yr contract. Mine is on the way, and I am loaning her my XCover to try out for a bit before making the switch.

2nd attempt since r/Android doesn't allow general discussion.

    Xiaomi Mi 10s troubles

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 02:00 PM PDT

The Xiaomi Mi 10s (Not the Mi Note 10s) is a weird phone that has the chinese rom installed. I could settle for simply flashing the european rom, from here: https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/guide-how-to-install-xiaomi-eu-rom-for-xiaomi-mi10s.60288/ , but it's not updated via OTA. Are there any other ROMs that work with this phone? I know this sounds dumb, but i'm desperate and support for this phone feels nonexistant: will flashing the Mi 10T ROM from LineageOS be a bad idea? If it is, do I have any other options?

    OBB files on android 11

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:52 PM PDT

Even my built in files app won't let me move obb files into the required directory. I found that supposedly special permissions are required and I gave them to the files app, but it still won't let me put the files where I need.

    Custom permissions?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:49 PM PDT

I have an old file manager that I really like, but isn't supported anymore and doesn't register as being a file manager even though it asks for storage permission. As such it won't write to external storage and I can't install apk files with it. Is there a way for me to manually give the required permissions?

Defaults keep changing on their own.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:45 PM PDT

I've just picked up a new tcl 20 xe. I loaded all my major apps including Total Launcher. I had to dig through just to find the ability to change default launcher as it didn't give me the option automatically. However, it keeps happening that the default reverts back to one of the preinstalled launchers.

I don't understand what is taking so much storage on my s9+ Screenshot

How is it possible that I have used so much storage when I only occupied 7gb for videos, 4gb for photos and 5.8gb for apps? Where did all the storage go

How do I change the Primary account?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 11:07 AM PDT

Google killed my account. I created a new one and added it to the phone, but everything wants to use the old account and won't let me change it. Removing the old account will remove all my messages and other data. How do I promote the new account without losing everything.

One of the things I can't use is the Play Store to download new apps.

App has access to data despite me blocking it

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 08:40 AM PDT

Hey there, i already disabled mobile data and wifi data from the app i want to not access the web, even blocked bckground traffic even if it technically doesn't make sense to me (if it can't access the web, why should background data pass?); however, after some minutes i use the app it partially access the web and downloads some (but not all) content it would download without those restrictions.
Any way to solve this? I'm Android 11. If i clear the cache the problem solves for a couple of minutes, then the problem comes back...
How can i solve this? It seems like it's sneaking up some data despite not being able theoretically...

Old Phones and Security / what would be the Linux Mint equivalent for Smartphones?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2022 08:20 AM PDT

I have to confess, I don't know much about Android, and what I've seen I don't like. But that might simply be the lack of knowledge. So in medias res:I can use pretty much any 15 year old computer with 4 or more GB to run current OS with up to date safety-patches. And even older ones can run with no frills lightweight modern OS. But how about Android-phones? It looks like they depend on OEM updates, and even Samsungs 5 year update promise seems to be considered "a lot" already.

    1. Does that mean a phone older than 3 to 5 years cannot be made secure anymore? Or is it possible to just delete the current OS and replace it with whatever the Android equivalent to Linux Mint or Q4OS for really ancient systems?
    2. Maybe one that is so nice that it might be a good idea to just replace the stock OS on brandnew phones just for the added security/speed/data protection (or simply so you don't have to get used to a new UI everytime you change the brand)?
    3. And how would one spot phones whose hardware is supported by those open source (yes, I know, Androit is technically open source, but I mean as in community managed, not google property, and made for the user, not made to extract data from the user) OS?

    Many thanks.. :)
