Firefox fork without the May 2019 extension kill switch

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 05:09 PM PDT

I sought help in /r/Firefox on how to remove the kill switch from the mobile edition that caused all extensions to be terminated on May 3, 2019, so I can shield myself for Mozilla's next big "oopsie". As a reference, my post was:

I would like to preemptively expunge the kill switch from my system that caused massive headaches by terminating access to all extensions both on desktop and mobile on May 3, 2019, before Mozilla makes yet another "oopsie" and ruins my day. I don't care for which "good purpose" this scourge against freedom is there. I want to be in control of my browsing experience, without interference by remote "oopsies".

There are already instructions on StackOverflow for liberating myself from the extension kill switch on desktop, but not on mobile.

The promise that it will never happen again is not enough. Trust but verify. If there is no way, I will have to find a fork that will not betray me one day.

Through the removal of my post, they have made clear that they don't want users to escape their ability to remotely terminate all browser extensions at their will. This seems at odds with their mission of being a bastion of freedom on the web. I suspect some forks are also affected by the extension kill switch.

Is there any fork which expressly isn't? I would like to prepare myself for Mozilla's next great oopsie. If not, I guess I will have to spend hours figuring out how to remove it from the code myself.

    family organization / todo app?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 12:46 PM PDT

I'm looking for a family organization app as the title says. I thought I could just Google it and find some good options but either I'm searching for the wrong thing or they aren't under development anymore. I'm looking for something that has :

Calendars for individuals and groups Todo list for individuals Reassign todo items to other people Notes

And ... other things I guess. The ones I found are Cozi, Flaky, and Hub app but only cozi shows up and I feel like the UI is ... rough.

    Any suggestions are welcome !

[DEV] Looking for some feedback on a personal project about taking pictures

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 12:41 PM PDT

TL;DR: I finished a pet project to motivate me to take more pictures and am looking for feedback. It's a light-hearted mobile game where you take pictures of prompts (like "sunny" or "bruh") and vote on your favorites. If you're interested in trying it out, please let me know!

Several years ago, while I was in college, I made a personal goal of improving my photography skills. Of course, when learning any new skill, dedication and discipline are crucial. And it's easy to let things slip when you have classes to worry about, internships to apply for...you know how it goes.

I tried to come up with ideas to help motivate me to keep taking pictures. 365s were really helpful (for example, I spent a year or two taking pictures of the sky every day) for discipline, but I wanted something additional to help stimulate my creativity.

At the time, I was studying design and digital play, and I was really interested in positive community-building and group play. I kept trying to merge the two concepts: what would it look like to build a community focused on group motivation and competitive creativity?

I was also really interested in disposable cameras and toy cameras at the time. (Actually, I still am!) I like that you don't know exactly how the picture's going to turn out. And the fact that you have a limited number of takes means that you can't just keep shooting until you get the perfect shot.

Eventually, I came up with an app that merged all of these ideas and started working on it. I finished a prototype and tried it out with a few friends, and it was a lot of fun. But then life got in the way—I graduated, got a job, started and finished other personal projects...

Now, over a decade later, I've finally decided to finish that project. I'm looking for some volunteers to help me test it out and give feedback.

I'm specifically looking for those who:

    • Have an Android phone with a camera (um, hopefully most of you qualify)
    • Feel comfortable taking pictures of various themed prompts and voting on other's photos
    • Don't mind giving feedback about the game

If you fit that description, let me know! Feel free to message me for more information. Thanks in advance :)

Oh yeah: the project is currently in closed alpha testing, which means I have to manually add you to the testing list in order for you to get the app. But if you're interested you can fill out this form or send me a DM.

    Searching for an App

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 01:21 PM PDT

I want to connect a wired keyboard and mouse to my phone, is there an app that now allows me to connect my phone to my tablet via bluetooth and also use the keyboard and mouse on my tablet.

Summarization: 1.Wired Keyboard and Mouse to Phone 2.Phone via Bluetooth to Tablet 3.Keyboard and Mouse useable on Tablet

I know it's a niche use case but I hope there's something that can help, or is there maybe a different subreddit that can help me more?

How to know if an app is one time payment or subscription based ?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 03:40 PM PDT

For example I want to disable ads form an app called ADM. It cost only 1.5$ to remove app so I thought it was too cheap for it to be one time payment.

In search of app: Text my location to a preset group with one click?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:09 AM PDT

UPDATE: It looks like MacroDroid just does this. Thank you to u/Akira_Menai for the suggestion.

Does anyone know of an app or combination of apps that I can use to text or email my location to a preselected group with one click? I'm on Android 7 with no root access.

Instead of with one click, a periodic share every 24 hours would be awesome too.

The closest I have gotten is combining a hotkey app with a location app, but I always run into some kind of problem.

For example, I tried using Key Mapper (a great app), but I can't get copy and paste to work. (I think I have all the accessibility and permission settings correct.)

MacroDroid: This worked for me to get clicking to work

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:29 AM PDT

I just wanted to share my noob experience with MacroDroid in case it helps anyone else. I was having trouble with clicks but I got it to work.

I'm not sure many others have this problem; I found a handful of discussions online and most seemed not to be resolved. But my screen is kinda f***ed; there's a crack (in the opposite corner from where I was trying to click) and there are pink and green vertical lines on each side of my screen.

For all I know, this is documented prominently and extensively all over the internet and the MacroDroid project/community. I'm not a developer, power user, faster learner or smart person. So my solution might even be so obvious that it doesn't need to be said, or it could be wrong, or insecure, or deprecated or something. I just got here by trial and error, after my frantic 5am google failed to turn up anything after 10 minutes.

ht to u/Lawsonator85 for letting me know that there's an easier solution to my WhatsApp use case. Hopefully this has broader relevance beyond WhatsApp:

I'm on Android 7 with a 720x1280 screen (thanks MacroDroid for telling me that!). I was trying to set something up to send a WhatsApp message to my friends. At first I tried using a click action. I tried "click" and "long click" and I tried "identify in app" and "x,y location" (using the MD Helper app). It created a click event, but with the wrong coordinates. (But I didn't know that at first.) I was trying to click near the bottom right of the screen, and it told me the coordinates were 360,727 or something like that. But then I just used trial and error and keyed in 700,1260 in the "x,y location" option. And that worked.

Need an app to create PDF/Doc

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:33 AM PDT

Can anyone recommend an app (or even software for a desktop) that would let me create a PDF or a Word document I can edit from a picture of a document?

I'm making a baby book and have some documents I kept track of my baby growing but don't have digital file anymore, only a print, so I'd need to make it into a PDF or a Word document so I can edit it and add more..

    Thanks!
