This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

What should I get first - A gaming laptop or a gaming PC? (high-end)

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 03:42 AM PDT

Listen guys; this is the situation -

I'm moving to a different country, and I just sold my desktop PC.

I need to buy a new system now (laptop or PC) by the end of June, and then the second system in November. I can't decide what to go for first, a gaming laptop or a gaming PC?

again, I'll get both anyway by the end of November.

    My thoughts:

    1. I'm interested in OLED screens for my laptop, and I know they're just around the corner, and gaming 15-inch OLEDs 144hz laptops are coming out this year. So maybe better to go for a PC first?
    2. Better to give the DDR5 market a bit more time? So maybe go for a laptop first?
    3. 4000 series are just around the corner - So maybe go for a laptop first (with 3070 ti)
    4. Maybe it's wiser to go first with a decent laptop (with 3070 ti) and then a super-strong PC with the 4xxx series in November? (Hope it will be out by then)

Please spare me the "Desktop PC is always stronger than a laptop" - That is well known.

Button line - I need to get one system by the end of June and then the second one by the end of November.

So what should I get first? A Desktop PC or a Laptop??

    Thanks, guys.

    GIFT PC won't power on.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:36 AM PDT

My MIL is poor and she is going back to college. She needs a PC at home. I had an old 2400g so I bought a asrock hdv 370m on sale. Built the PC, but for some reason the PC won't even power on. To be clear, ots not that the cooler spins and shuts down. It looks like it isn't even being powered. Swapped the PSU and case with my own 5900x build and my own PC works but not my MIL'S. Can the mobo be fucked up?

5900x issues vs intel 12th gen issues

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 05:49 AM PDT

I was planning on a Build with a 5900x and posted it here. Then I started reading about AMD Motherboard issues with 550 and 570 boards and these CPUs. A lot of people had problems and some people still have issues and nothing helps (talking about USB issues) So I started looking at Intel… 12700 and 12900 are awesome! But apparently they also have problems because e-cores suck? I just don't know what to buy. Seems like everything has problems and I want to keep my PC as long as possible. Planning on Gaming and sometimes Streaming in combination with a 3080. Gaming 1440p 144hz. I will use my PC next 5-10 years and only change something when it doesn't work anymore, so I don't really care if AM4 is a dead platform or anything like that.

Sorry for posting that much, but I just want my PC already… so here's my question:

I would love to hear your experience's if you built a PC in the last couple months with these CPUs and a 30 series card? Did you have any issues?

You all are literally my last hope.. I bought a mini pc that boots into the bios, recognizes my usb installer, but won't boot into the installer. Not one subreddit or forum has helped so far

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:42 PM PDT

I have posted this on r/pfsense, a tech forum dedicated to this type of stuff, and the superuser stack exchange. I have gotten some suggestions, but no answers to my problems.

Long story short, I bought a mini pc to use as a router. I ordered it with no ram/ssd/os and installed my own ram and ssd. The plan is to flash pfsense on it. At this point, I have tried multiple brands, sizes, 2.0/3.0/3.1 usb drives as the installer drive. I have flashed them using rufus, and using balenaEtcher. These installer drives work just fine on my gaming pc, but I can't get the mini pc to boot into them. I also replaced the ram just in case it was bad, but the mobo actually detects it in the bios.

I took screenshots of the actual bios and default settings just to see if anyone could pick out the issue in the bios. I've tried toggling secure boot, csm support, lots of things I don't fully understand. I'm beginning to think it is hardware related, but at this point, I figured why not ask here. I can answer any questions, try any solution, and post as much information as needed. Shoot I could even hook up a capture card and show directly whats happening. Thank you in advance for any help.

    Mini pc specs:

Intel J41258gb PNY DDR4 2400mhz from best buy American Megatrends 2.19.1268 dated 1/6/2022 Bios Mobo is an unknown chinese one 2x USB 3.x ports (theyre blue)

Gaming pc specs: (this pc can boot into the installers)

    Gigabyte B450M DS3H wifi Ryzen 7 3700x 32gb DDR4 3000mhz Gigabyte RTX 3070

Should I get a RTX 2060 (super) or RTX 3060 ti

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 11:17 AM PDT

Hey! I am yound and saving up for a new GPU becouse the only thing stopping me from playing new AAA games is my GPU (1050 ti) and I am looking to buy a new one. I am not very intrested in AMD cards becouse I nkow that their interface/options are worse than Nvidia's Control panel and Geforce experiance.Curently the RTX 2060 (SUPER) goes for around 400euro and the RTX 3060 ti for around 550-600euro.

    My Specs:CPU: Intel I5-10400fRam: 16gb DDR4GPU: GTX 1050 tiPSU: 550W CorsairMBO: gygabite B460m
Edit: I kinda flew over while writing it and kind of forgot about the point. My question was: Is it worth buying RTX 3060ti for RTX, DLSS or should I jsut buy a different card entierly?

Need some help making a gaming pc

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 06:33 PM PDT

I'm trying to make a gaming pc but I don;t know much about computer parts this is what I have https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hWCPfv but I'm not sure if this is good.

i mostly just want to play at 1080p 60 fps, I would like to try streaming too.

is there any changes that would lower the price or perform better

I'm okay with spending few hundred more if it would make a big difference.

    What drivers do I need?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 06:06 PM PDT

I only downloaded the network/wifi/bluetooth drivers for my motherboard (MSI MAG Tomahawk z690 wifi ddr4), and Windows automatically downloaded: NVIDIA Control Panel, Intel Graphics Command Center, Intel PROSet Adapter Config, and MSIRegister. I was told I only need a graphics card driver.

My GPU is EVGA Geforce RTX 3070 Ti. I clicked on NVIDIA Control Panel, and it appears I have Version 472.12. Do I have the most recent version? Not sure what the Intel stuff is for. This is my first PC.

Also, I don't have a product key for Windows 10 Home if that matters, I'll be using this for gaming/spotify/discord. Thanks!

Is a core i7-12700K 3.6 GHz 12-Core Processor overkill for only gaming? If so, what cpu would be good for only gaming and watching vids?

What should you download after building your pc?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:06 PM PDT

I'm going to split this into 3 parts

    1. The important software - this is like benchmark stuff, rgb software, winrar etc

    2. Everyday apps/software - think Spotify, discord, etc

    3. Game launchers - for reference, these are the games I will be playing so if you could tell me what I would need to download (cod vg, wz, rocket league, r6s, valorant, elden ring, rdr2 etc)

Stuck in a loop -- can't boot without enabling CSM in BIOS, can't restart with CSM enabled

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 05:54 PM PDT

I just put together a new PC yesterday. Having a very

    Parts list

    i5 12400f

    Gigabyte Aorus Master DDR4 B660

EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080 10GB (this is B-stock if that might matter)

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15

    EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6 80+ Gold 850W

    Western Digital Black SN750 1TB M.2 SSD

Samsung 250GB SATA SSD (from a previous build, has Windows installed on it)

    Western Digital 1TB HDD

    Problem description

First time I powered on the system it posted but showed no available drives to boot from in BIOS. It did register both SSDs and the HDD. The Samsung SSD and the HDD are from an older build and the Samsung SSD has Windows installed on it already. I was able to get these recognized as boot drives by enabling CSM in BIOS. That seemed to be that, and I was able to update Windows (after entering my product key from when I originally purchased it), play games, format the M.2 and move some files to it -- everything seems normal as long as I keep the PC running.

The problem is: when I turn the PC back on after shutting it down or putting it to sleep, it won't post again. The GPU lights up, the motherboard gives me the boot troubleshooting LED, and the screen remains black. Clearing CMOS gets it to post again, but then I'm back to square one: with default BIOS settings (including CSM disabled) no bootable drive is detected and I have to enable CSM to get it to give me any boot drive options.

The only other thing I have done in BIOS is to enable XMP.

Any idea what might be going wrong? Is having CSM enabled screwing things up, and if so is there another way I can get BIOS to recognize that I have a working Windows install already? Is there a way I can re-install Windows such that BIOS stops thinking I have no bootable drive without CSM?

Edit: seem to have solved the problem by converting my boot drive from MBR to GPT by following the instructions in this glorious video. Doing this allowed me to disable CSM in BIOS and still have BIOS recognize my boot drive. Thanks to anyone who read through all of these acronyms. I'll leave this post up for posterity.

    Deepcool Tesseract Case Backfan Replacement

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 08:02 PM PDT

Hello! I just wanted to check if this fan below would be compatible with the PC Case/my current build below. According to the case's manual, the sizes should be correct. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything such as it taking too much power from my PSU or some other small thing for when I make my purchases. What is the correct way to mount 3.5" HDDs?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:58 PM PDT

In their native tray, in 5.25" bay, and when DIY adding additional HDD mounts using brackets or something, respectively - in principle, what should I be looking for? Mounting the HDDs as rigidly as possible? Mounting the HDDs rigidly, but using screws with rubber grommets? Plastic mounting rails? Mounting the HDDs suspended with rubber stands?

What Sensor do you guys choose to trigger your case fans via PWM?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:01 PM PDT

I'm just curious on what you guys choose. My BIOS defaults it to VRM MOS but I've been tempted to change it to my PCIE slot for my Graphics card.

What are your reasonings for your decisions as well. Also do certain cases prompt different choices for you?

    Psu requirement for this setup?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:56 PM PDT

I know there are a few sites I can look this up on and I have looked into it.

They recommend a psu of 750

    Setup:

    I9 12900k Radeon 6800XT DDDR5 4800 32gb 2x16 Some fans M2 2XSSD 1XHDD

Now, reading on some reviews for the I9 says that users have recommended a 1000W PSU. Would that be overkill? Or will I be fine with 750?

Crucial P2 NVMe M.2 slow READ speeds

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:56 AM PDT

Hello, I have a 2TB NVMe M.2 drive and I bought it for video editing 4K videos. It's currently at 30% filled. It takes forever to pull videos off of it to my other drives. File transfers are ridiculously slow, in 20 MB/sec range. It's tough to PLAY BACK video files with tons of stuttering (Windows Media Player or VLC).

I have no issues transferring from or playing these 4K videos from my spinning HDDs or my main NVMe M.2 drive, only this drive. (It's also not bottlenecked by the write speed on the drives I'm pulling to, I've tried everything and narrowed it down to the read speed on this drive). And yes, tested the same video files from all drives.

All software shows the drive is healthy, but I get scores like this:

    https://imgur.com/a/TMWakT9

    and

    Does anyone have any ideas?

One of the more stupid things I've done...

    Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:49 PM PDT

Not sure if anyone has gone through this, but I have a PC that only has one M.2 slot on it. Had a 1tb M.2, bought a bigger one, but had to get a PCIe/NVMe to USB adapter so I can clone one to the other. Awesome.

But I couldn't get the computer to recognize the second M.2 for some reason. Kept checking the connection, checking the second M.2, going through all these steps. Turns out I didn't push the second M.2 far enough onto the little device that plugs into the USB slot. As soon as I popped off the M.2, put it back in and plugged it into the PC, it was right there for me to format.

Took about an hour or two to get there though...

Usage: A lot of data processing (ML/database) few games ; Photo/video editing

Age: I probably want to use it for next 4-5 years

    Where I am stuck:

    1. Powersupply - is 650W ok ?
    2. What extra fans/ cooler do I need?
    3. is 32GB memory enough ?
    4. I am no expert at hardware - so overclocking etc, is out of my expertize
    5. GPU - probably will need it - but the prices are just too much. Any suggestion for a decent model - I will be using 2-3 monitors

Have a ATX case and 650 power supply along with two UHD monitors
