Huge spikes while transferring files over network.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 04:07 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm using my 4G Wi-Fi modem network, to transfer files from my laptop to my PC When I used GIO/GVfs utility Gigoloit's start fast for few seconds and transfer rat down to couple Kilbytes , and finally frozen,, So I use nc command to transfer files directly ... On my laptop (sender) tar cv . | nc -q 1 192.168.1.100 1234
    and on my PC (receiver) nc -q 1 -l -p 1234 | tar xv

the transfer rate were weird, it's start with ~6Mbits and suddenly went down to 552Bit/s or to zero for quite period of time and later pump up to 15Mbit/s

Even this is may be, not directly related, but the internet access on my laptop sometime get lost, I still connected to the Wi-Fi, but pinging any outside IP address will not work, I need to restart wp_suppliment service to get it working again .

PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data. From 192.168.1.101 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

Ethernet stops working when connected to WiFi Network. I want to use the wi-fi for the internet and ethernet to my PC just for a local faster connection.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 11:35 PM PDT

I have tried to connect my Rpi4 to the internet via Wi-fi and simultaneously to my PC via ethernet. I need the ethernet to my PC only for a wired local connection for quick ssh and VNC. I don't want to share the internet with Rpi4 via PC.

The Wi-fi works fine. I can ping and ssh. But via the ethernet, none is possible. The connection is very slow and fails most ping requests ( replies come occasionally )

Please check the system & network configuration below.

    route configuration

    interface configuration

How the wifi replies to ping

How the ethernet replies to ping

If you have any solution that will fit my needs, please let me know here. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Ubuntu 22.04 - tried Pantheon desktop

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 02:20 AM PDT

    Hello,

today I actually messed up my Ubuntu installation. I wanted to try elementaryOS feel and foud some guide to install Pantheon desktop manager. I also have installed KDE Plasma and XFCE on my Ubuntu with GNOME and never get into a problem. But now with Pantheon, everything is looking like i don't have Ubuntu but ElementaryOS...

For example, GRUB is now telling me it's elementaryOS -

When some error occures it tells me "ElementaryOS captured internal error" -

When booting i used to see Ubuntu logo, but now it's gone, only with some spinning circle -

After uninstall of Pantheon - Pantheon is gone, but there are some leftovers, like ElementaryOS's terminal and settings, and those bugs listed above...

I wanna back my old Ubuntu feeling, i feel now like it is so messed up...

    Thanks for any help!

Delete a Windows partition and resize a linux one.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 05:56 AM PDT

Hi everyone!!! I started my linux journey by setting up my machine to dual boot with windows. However, I've noticed I'm running out of space in my linux partition and I want to make the final step to switch to linux completely, therefore I want to delete my current Windows partition to make my linux one bigger. So, how would you recommend doing that without completely bricking my system? (I've already backed up all my files, but I don't want to set many configurations and profiles all over again.)

This is what the result of the 'lsblk' command looks like:

    john@pillarofautumn:~$ lsblk

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT

    loop0 7:0 0 186.9M 1 loop /snap/audacity/971

    loop1 7:1 0 186.9M 1 loop /snap/audacity/992

    └─sdb4 8:20 0 246.9G 0 part /

    ;---------------------------------------------

My linux system is stored on the sdb4 (246.9GB) partition, and the Windows one is sdb3 (200GB).

I remember having an 8GB swap partition, but I doesn't seem to appear here.

Thank you in advance!!! Have a great day!

Upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04 and now Flameshot not working. See below for details. How to fix?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 09:06 PM PDT

Recently upgraded to 22.04 from 21.10. I installed Flameshot and it's not working. I click on the Flameshot icon and nothing happens. How to fix this?

Does anyone have Flameshot working normally on their Ubuntu 22.04?

Flameshot is installed. Here's what happens: * I go to the Gnome "search" screen, type in "flame", the large Flameshot icon appears, I click on it and a very small Flameshot icon appears in my dock, I click on the tiny Flameshot icon and a menu appears, one of the menu items is "Take a Screenshot"", I click on this and nothing happens. How to fix this? Thanks. PS: I do a Ubuntu software update everyday. PS: Flameshot worked fine in 21.10, I didn't have to do anything special for it to work great.

How can i recover a backup I accidentally wiped off my LUKS encrypted HDD?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 12:09 AM PDT

I just made a mistake. I have a backup of all my data on my phone but I didn't have it on my PC yet. I recently copied it over to an encrypted HDD on my Linux PC, or so I thought. I accidentally cut it instead of copying.

Today I decided to return back to Windows so I wiped all my drives trough the Windows setup.

I just lost my backup this way and I don't know how to recover it. Am I able to do that myself and how would I be able to do that?

I haven't done anything to setup the HDD in Windows to make sure nothing gets overwritten.

    Thanks!

For years I was fan of the open source idea but well I'm not a PC guru just a average guy who wants to be a part of this community.

Now I want to change something in my life for better but for what I know Linux got a complicated relationship with Nvidia it's that change after Elon Musk buys them?

Its a good idea to install Ubuntu/Arch on this device: Dell G15 Ryzen Edition with Nvidia Geforce RTX ?

Why most Linux sysadmin have a grudge againts powershell or they don't like it ? I talked with many of thems online on different subs reddit or elsewhere and they say bash is much better, powershell isn't good at managing linux, the syntax is too complex and bad etc etc or this or that etc

Why is that ? do you really feel you can't do much to manage a linux/aws env with powershell or need to update it or its slow or things like that compared to windows/azure ?

    thanks for your advices

I just installed Linux Mint Cinammon. I prefer OpenOffice to LibreOffice. Can someone provide me a step by step installation guide for OpenOffice? I think I already screwed it up.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 04:02 PM PDT

I tried to install it by downloading Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.12_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz from the OpenOffice website. I extracted this compressed file, and then tried to install it via a series of terminal commands that I found online.

This resulted in an "openoffice4" directory being created in my "opt" directory. I believe I have done all installation steps, and properly, up to but not including desktop integration.

What do I need to do to complete the install so that I can actually run the program with ease and efficiency?

How can I get display settings to save in VirtualBox?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 08:36 PM PDT

I'm trying to set up Rocky Linux in a virtual machine with Virtual Box and I changed the display to the perfect resolution within the Rocky vm and then saved the state. However, after shutting it down and powering the vm instance back up, the settings are back to having the default resolution. I thought saving state would save settings but I guess I'm wrong.

Edit: it looks like it saves when I save state but if I shutdown after then my display settings are lost again. Does that mean I need to save state every time I close this down??

What do I need to know before dual booting windows and Linux on the same drive?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 04:31 PM PDT

Hey all. I've been using xubuntu on my extremely terrible laptop, and it's begun to grow on me. I want to use it as my daily driver on my pc, but I have some applications like Autocad that require me to have windows.

At the moment I have an 1tb NVME drive, a slower 250 gb ssd, and a 1tb backup hdd.

My idea was to setup the nvme to have both operating systems, as well as something like a 150gb shared NTFS documents/pictures partition. Then I could use the 250gb ssd for games and other windows files.

However I've heard that windows can sometimes overwrite Linux partitions, or that sometimes you will hit the partition cap. Is this something I need to be worried about? Is there any other general advice I need?

    Thanks?

`fstrim` trims large amount of same data each run. Is it normal?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 06:16 PM PDT

I am running fstrim on SSD with LUKS BTRFS partition. This is how much it trims. (Same happens with /boot/efi partition, not /boot though)

    1. Reboot
    2. fstrim -v / trims 47GB
    3. Each rerun trims 30GB.
    4. Reboot
    5. Repeats step 2

With dry run flag -n fstrim shows 0 bytes on reruns.

    For /boot partition (Non LUKS) 1. Reboot 2. fstrim -v /boot trims 200MB 3. Each rerun trims 0 bytes. 4. Reboot 5. Repeats step 2

And why is it doing this?

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/729279/large-amount-of-data-trimmed-after-running-fstrim

Above answer explains why at reboot. But mine, also trims at reruns, not just reboots.

what do I do with anti virus/antimalware? does it come with mint, do I even need an anti virus?

can I use a 240gb ssd as a boot drive and have everything else on a separate 2tb ssd?

if I want to install stuff should I use the some kind of app store, the programs official website or use the terminal?
