Asus ROG Strix G15 (2021) or TUF F15 (2022) for design school

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 06:21 AM PDT

I'm buying a laptop for 4 years of design school and can't pick between the two

    Strix g15 - Ryzen 9 5900hx, 16gb ddr4, RTX 3050ti

    TUF f15 - i7 12700h, 16gb ddr5, RTX 3050ti

The TUF on paper looks like the better choice given the new gen intel step up and ddr5 ram but I'm concerned about heating issues on the intel chipset and if ddr5 would be future proof.

Both are at relatively the same price

    I'm from India

    Need a Laptop for College

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 09:29 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      3,000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Would like enough performance to run games at 144 fps with a 144 hertz display. Also want a good battery life when browsing around the internet and doing work. Needs to be on the quiet side when browsing the internet or typing up some emails as well. Don't need that 2-1 stuff.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'd say like 7/10, definitely prefer something thinner and more portable.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-15'6.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      League of Legends
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      League of Legends 144 fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Relatively standard LOOKING keyboard. No weird fonts, OR AN ENTER KEY THAT'S A WEIRD SHAPE
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is probably impossible but I appreciate the help in advance. I've been looking at the Alienware x15 r2 but have concerns about the battery life. Also looking at the Legion slim 7 if that helps.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm open to something a little over the budget I mentioned since I can possibly find a refurb/used one. I will be doing school online with this laptop, and personal use for social media and watching Youtube. I currently have a Chromebook 11 that I bought used, which is no longer getting updates or anything, but that's what I'm pretty familiar with. I've had it since 2019-2020.

Need laptop for 3D modeling and Adobe (ES - 1500€)

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 03:45 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around 1500€, maybe a bit more, or less. In Spain.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A 2 in 1 would be fantastic but it's out of my budget. Any form factor will do.
Decent enough build quality, I don't want cheap plastic since it's going to be tossed around between home and class.
Perfomance should be enough to render in Blender and use Adobe Creative pack (pretty demanding).
Battery life doesn't matter at all.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

If it can be lighter than 2kg my back would thank you inmensely. Thinness is irrelevant.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Adobe Creative pack

      • Photoshop
      • Illustrator
      • After Effects
      • Premiere
      • Animate
      • Blender
      • Clip Studio Paint
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      • Nier Replicant
      • Emulation (Yuzu, rpcs3...)
      • Oxygen not Included

I don't mind playing on low graphics and res, just need decent fps rate (50~60fps).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I don't mind either, but I need it to be sturdy.
I specifically want 1TB SSD though, or enough USB ports for an external hard drive if there's not better option

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Don't recommend me Asus please :(
FreeDOS is fine as well, going to be using W10/11 though.

      Thanks in advance!

Long-lasting laptop for very generic use

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 03:54 PM PDT

I'm helping an elderly friend of the family pick out a laptop. Their use for this laptop is very generic. Zoom, Skype, YouTube, email, photos, web browsing, photo viewing, document reading, etc. At first, I was thinking https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/uq8th9/laptop_for_the_technologically_illiterate/ might be relevant, but unlike this post, the person I'm helping is more familiar with Windows, and I worry a switch to something like MacOS would give them a hard time.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Up to $1000 CAD, i.e., Canadian dollars, (though under $800 CAD is better).
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality is probably most important. Performance for basic tasks mentioned above and below is also important, but performance beyond that is not. Form factor is irrelevant, and battery life does not seem critical (it's not going outside).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Chrome, Zoom, Skype, photo viewing, weather, etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No games (except maybe something like Solitaire?)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Windows 11 (or Windows 10 but upgradeable to Windows 11), reliable build quality, HDMI port, at least two USB "A" ports (or one USB and one optical drive, though I feel two USB ports is more realistic).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The generic use cases and relatively low price range doesn't give me much to narrow things down with. It seems they'll even be connecting it to a TV screen more than using the in-built screen, so even screen quality is irrelevant. However, they mentioned not wanting to buy another laptop again for a while, so I guess build quality and lifespan would be important. With a bit of an increased budget, I'd probably be leaning towards a business laptop like a Thinkpad T-series, but that might be more than they want to pay.
They'd also prefer to pick up a laptop from a store rather than online, so that means I'm mostly limited to things like Acer Swifts/Aspires, ASUS Vivobooks, Lenovo Flexes/Ideapads/Thinkbooks, and HP's lower-end models. If anyone has any feelings about how these generally compare, even if there's no specific laptop recommendation, that'd also help a lot!

I need help looking for a laptop for video game design!

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 11:00 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1000-1500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes!

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I care about the performance and the quality more than anything, but I also want it to be under 15 inches and with an average battery. Also no Transformers looking laptop. Only sleek designs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very, but I don't want a suitcase for a laptop.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15 inches and under.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm looking to do game design at an entry level, but I'm also planning on keeping this laptop for the next three years of college, meaning that an entry level might not be ideal. I might do some light gaming, but it won't be anything heavy ( GTA: SA, emulators, BO2)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Like mention I might play games, but it will be light games like the ones mentioned before.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like a good backlight keyboard and for it to have a finger print reader in it. The quality built also matters a lot to me, so no cheap plastic feel to it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't really need a top of the line GPU, but I do need something capable of performing most tasks required in gaming design.

Looking for a mid-range laptop to use for graphic design/animation, video editing, and other artistic projects. My budget is around $1,200.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 07:07 PM PDT

As the title says, I'm looking for a mid-range laptop that I can use for some graphic design, animation, video editing, and some other artistic projects I want to work on.

I work on short animated films, and my current laptop, that being the lowest model of the Surface Book 2, just isn't cutting it. It could barely handle running multiple symbols in Animate CC, and after a couple of years, I think it's time for an upgrade. I should also add, I'm looking to expand into working on some more artistic hobbies, including indie-level game-dev stuff with Unity, which is probably the most technically demanding use for whatever laptop I get.

My budget limit is around $1,200, though I might be willing to stretch that limit if something really catches my eye. Truth be told, I'm a bit inexperienced when it comes to buying laptops, so I don't realistically know exactly what to look for, though I do have something in mind. Right now, I'm eyeing the Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 6, (AMD Ryzen 7-5800H,16gb Ram, RTX 3050, 512gb SSD) The price ranges from $950 to $1,100 depending on the retailer and sale. Unfortunately, the sub won't allow me to post a specific link.

While I do want to use whatever laptop I get for graphic design, having it be a 2 in 1 really isn't necessary for me. I'm fine settling with a drawing tablet as an accessory, given the one I have gets the job done. Plus, most 2 in 1s with decent specs are insanely expensive, so it's not a priority for me. I'm open to the options, but I doubt I'll find anything.

So, to those who are more experienced in the whole tech world, what's your advice? Should I get the Legion 5, or is there something more worth it given what I'm looking for? Thanks for whatever advice I get in advance!

Any laptops with these specific, hard-to-find aspects?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 10:18 PM PDT

Before listing the usual details, this will really narrow the possibilities... I currently have a Lenovo Legion Y540 which is perfect in these rarefied respects:

    • Full size function keys along the top,

    • Full size arrow keys, separated and not mashed in against the other keys,

    • Non-click trackpad with separate left & right mouse buttons (i.e. keypad is solid, cannot be pressed)

I'm looking for a second laptop, in case this one dies, so I don't lose work time. I may be forced to buy another Y540, considering the uniquely nice keyboard layout, but I'd like to see if there are any other possibilities.

    Examples:

    • MSI Sword - trackpad buttons and full-size arrow keys, but they're mushed against everything else which is too awkward. Function keys are not full size.

    • ASUS TUF - arrow keys are separated but too small, and coloured WASD is too distracting.

    • Gigabyte same issues as MSI.

    • Compare above to the Legion Y540 keyboard - full-size everything, arrow keys nicely separated, trackpad buttons. Even the Lenovo Thinkpad doesn't have full size arrow keys.

    Here's the general form info:

    • Budget: ~AU$2000-$2500

    • Refurb/used: No. Warranty important for work.

    • Form factor would be "desktop replacement". Weight/slimness not important.

    • Screen size: 15". Matte not gloss, no touch-screen.

    • Programs: Photoshop, Visual Studio, SQL Server, Unity.

    • Gaming: Occasional casual gaming, e.g. The Forest or Raft with the nephews. The 1660Ti in this Y540 has been fine.

    • Specific Requirements: Mentioned above. Highest priority is build quality & reliability (incl quality keyboard keys) and good cooling (Aussie heat here). Screen quality & colour representation also important for web design work. Windows only, no Macs.

Basically, is there anything out there with similar keyboard & trackpad to the Y540? :)

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Since I am using this for gaming, I would like a higher performance laptop. Battery life isn't that major of an issue for me, and also I would like it to not overheat. I understand completely that there isn't a perfect laptop that stays cool, but I don't want my keyboard melting when I play in high performance modes.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

No preference. I would prefer a bulky and heavy laptop if that means performance, graphics, and not overheating.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming only. I would be using Steam to run next gen games.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would like to play GTA V, RDR II, and some next gen games on it. I would prefer using a high performance mode than a really visually appealing mode in game.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    No thank you.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My only main priorities are protection against overheating, and ability to run games that will come out in the near future (still in Xbox Series X/PS5 era). When recommending a laptop, please also let me know what performance mode I should use to prevent overheating.

Thank you, and hopefully I'm not asking for too much.

Dell 5310 with better specs vs 7310 with worse specs

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 03:30 PM PDT

Looking for a new (to me) laptop and wondering what the build quality difference is like between the two latitude tiers?

Have an option to get a 5310 with an i7 10810u 32gb ram 512gb ssd for 500 euro, or a 7310 with an i5 10310u, 16gb ram 256gb SSD for 550 euro. There might be wiggle room in those prices.

    As a cheaper alternative, there is also a 7390 i7 8650u 8gb ram 256gb ssd for 350 euro.

Which of these is the most cost effective option relative to performance and build quality?

I've owned a ThinkPad x230 with maxed out specs for about 6 years, and am looking for something with usb-c to last a similar amount of time.

Use case is very standard. Minimal to no gaming, maybe streaming Xbox gameplay to the laptop, internet browsing, etc. Build quality, upgradability and battery life are key.

WoW Shadowlands on ultra during raids

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really but good keyboard of course always important

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Guys, I'm at a stage in my life where I don't have a lot of free time anymore, but every once in awhile I just want to play a little bit of WoW. I mostly mess around on Classic but want to be able to experience new expansions at max settings without issue. I don't need to be able to play cutting edge games, I've got an xbox that is good enough for that.

I'm looking for a laptop that doesn't look like a gaming laptop and could comfortably run new WoW expansions on Ultra. In case I need to take it to work for any other reason. But it'll mostly hang out at home. The Zephyrus line of laptops look great to me but I'm so overwhelmed with the options and I don't know which model would be ok.

Does anyone have any advice on which model I could go with? Or, if there's any other laptop I need to consider would also appreciate. Thank you very much for considering.

Thinking about buying an Alienware x15 or an Acer nitro 5 an515-45 for 3D modeling, which one will last me longer? Both of them have RTX 3080 but the first runs on i7 and the other on AMD Ryzen 7 5800H

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 05:31 PM PDT

Hey, I have done some more research and found out the Acer Nitro is very similar to the Alienware X15/17. Which CPU is better?

    Thanks again for your help.

a new laptop for the next generation of gaming?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 05:29 PM PDT

Let me start off by saying, this is my first real forray into the world of PC gaming, so I apologize for what may be a lengthy post.

Up until now I have been a console gamer. Always had and Xbox but haven't yet bought any of the latest Gen stuff. I got a computer for school in 2016 or 17. MacBook pro. It's served me well doing my digital work through Adobe suite etc, but obviously precious little for gaming.

Fast forward to this year. Ive moved out to Montana for summer work and may stay for a while. But im basically living out of a hotel room. I know my laptop is reaching the end of its natural life and I will need another computer soon. I'm also finally making enough money to maybe buy a next Gen console. But I'm going to need to replace that laptop. I got to thinking, maybe I can save up and buy something that will let me do both.

The question therefore: in the opinions of you, the tech wizards and PC gamers of reddit, how can I best achieve this? I like the portability of my laptop and I am used to last Gen, suboptimal performance. I want something that can play with the next generation of titles. Are there laptops under 2500 that can run these next Gen games as well/better than consoles? Are gaming laptops stupid and a waste of money?

I am aware that a standard desktop can do more for less, given their size and cooling ability. But my space is limited and I need something potentially more portable for some work. Really, I just want something that can run games smoothly and let me get a taste of the next gen experience.

Tldr: Need advice about potential gaming PC's (perferably laptops due to space and portability concerns)

Would this laptop work well for emulating?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 05:02 PM PDT

Need a new laptop and the most intensive thing I'll be doing with it will be emulating.

Are these specs strong enough for that? I've read that it's mostly dependent on CPU so I went for something well above an STR of 2100 but I just want to cover my bases before pulling the trigger on it.

    CPU: Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U (STR: 2963)

    GPU: integrated

    RAM: 8GB LPDDR4X 4266MHz

RAM is upgradable but if 8GB is enough I'd rather not deal with it

    Laptop for Engineering Student

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 04:50 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Max budget around $700 USD, prefer to stay in the range of $500-$600 USD though. Purchasing in the US.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Definitely, I used to be a laptop tech so I'm open to items that need a little bit of work (ie battery replacement, installing an SSD, etc)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Mostly prioritizing build quality, performance, and battery life. As an engineering student, this will become my primary note-taking device as well as the computer I'll be using for labs. Needs to be able to withstand being in a backpack all day.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Can be a bit chunky, as long as it isn't going to break my back.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
This laptop is replacing a 14" class laptop, but I'm open to 15" class devices or even 17" depending on the model.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Primarily will be using software for programming, VHDL/FPGA development (including heavy compiler), microcontroller development, and note taking. Doesn't need to be a beefy gaming machine, but the ability to play lighter titles is a plus.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Lighter titles such as CSGO, Minecraft, Jackbox Party Pack, etc. As long as they're playable, it doesn't really matter to me.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Needs to have: Modern 6+ core CPU. 16GB RAM minimum, more would be nice. Strong battery. Durable build quality (This will be my school laptop, so it needs to ideally have enough juice to last all day and not fold in half in my backpack). Nice to haves: touchscreen, fingerprint scanner, and a keyboard that doesn't make me hate existing.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Hey all, my Lenovo Thinkpad T450 is on its deathbed. I've been on and off looking at replacing it anyways, as the poor i5-5300U can't keep up with my workflows anymore (or really anything, in all honesty). The only thing the old laptop had going for it was the massive battery (I think it had somewhere in the neighborhood of 95Wh combined). I primarily use the laptop for school, and as a computer engineering student I predominantly use my laptop for programming and VHDL/FPGA development, however I do like having a portable machine that can run lighter titles (ie CSGO, Minecraft, Jackbox Party Pack, and other LAN games) if needed.

      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1 is nice; performance is nice
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Medium priority
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Photo editing (photoshop)

      original post from /r/buildapc below:

    -----------------------------

I'm looking for a laptop for my girlfriend (I don't think people build laptops, I've only ever built PCs). But I assume the community here understands the parts and what specs to optimize for.

From my understanding, in photoshop you want to optimize:

    1. Powerful CPU, choose one with 6 cores or less
    2. Lots of RAM
    3. SSD
    4. Nice IPS screen with high nits and resolution
    5. Is a GPU important??

In the laptop space, I'd also like:

    • Touch screen, maybe convertible, for drawing
    • Thunderbolt 4, or USB 3.1/2? I assume she will need a super-fast portable hard drive that can hook into one of the slots. You quickly run out of space editing and storing photos...
    • Having an integrated vs dedicated GPU -- is the dedicated GPU worth the battery cost?

    Here's one I found already:

It also looks like a free Windows 11 upgrade is available for devices that meet minimum specs, so buying a Windows 10 laptop isn't a big downside.

    Coder/Traveller seeks solid laptop

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 03:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Under 3000 euros ideally.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'd like something resistant to damage that doesn't overheat.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not really important but I don't want a fat getac either.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Below 17'
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd like to be able to run Blender, LMMS and the Unreal Engine correctly. I am going to compile programs and do fuzz testing as well. It has to be able to run a virtual machine nicely.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't plan on gaming too much. I'd like to be able to run the game I'll be coding though, it's not gonig to be too demanding as I am terrible at 3D modelling so we're not talking about rendering some 60fps ultra realistic games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Like I've said earlier, I'd like something resistant to damage. I don't want a touch screen but if there's one, whatever, it's not going to kill me although I don't think laptops like the ones I'm describing have touch screens.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I plan on travelling with that laptop and I might spend some nights outside, I'm also going to run Linux on it. Someone recommended me the Thinkpad p15 or p14 a while back but I heard they had overheating issues. Can you please recommend me something? Thank you.
