Traded an Xbox for a laptop.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 02:35 PM PDT

Today I traded an Xbox for a laptop. I haven't checked out the laptop yet, but he says it should be on the sign in screen. He says it was wiped earlier. Is there anything that I should do to make sure there isn't anything bad on the laptop? I'm not concerned but I didn't know if there was anything I should check. Thank you all.

Broken charger without a reorderable replacement

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 08:59 AM PDT

I recently purchased a new galaxy book odyssey and the charger has broken within the first week. i ordered the laptop from best buy and they don't carry the compatible charger in store or online. The charger is 135W with a usb-c connector. i cannot find a charger with the same wattage or higher wattage with a usb-c connector through amazon or samsung online. Do i contact Samsung about a replacement or do i just return the laptop to best buy and get another new one. I already had to return the laptop once because one of the keys didn't work. I don't want to have to wait another week for a replacement because i've had to wait an extra week already.

Can I clean a laptop with isopropyl alcohol?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 12:30 PM PDT

I've heard that some people can clean their laptops with isopropyl alcohol yet I have also heard others say that alcohol will strip off all the paint. So can I or can I not clean the laptop with isopropyl alcohol without stripping the paint or damaging the laptop?

And if yes, should I dilute it or can I use 99.99%?

    • AMD Ryzen 7 5700U (presumably Vega 8 intergrated graphics)

    • 12GB RAM

    • 512GB SSD

Need it for school, where I'll be doing a ton of typing (getting an external keyboard) and multitasking (many Chrome tabs + Microsoft Office). I also like to play The Sims 4 and can totally get by with lower graphics settings.

For $999 CAD ($794.45 USD) it seems like a great deal.

    Help buying laptop

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 12:14 PM PDT

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive ($250-$400 ish) laptop that has decent battery life, isn't super bulky, has good (doesn't have to be the super best) graphics/audio, and can run decently sized games (minecraft would probably be the heaviest, not gonna be playing skyrim with more mods than game and whatnot). anybody have any reccomendations? (preferably with links) thank you!

Looking for a laptop for medical school (<$1000, USA)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 11:57 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No more than $1000 but ideally as far under that as possible…

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

yes as long as it has a warranty

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

performance > battery life > form > quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Fairly important as I will be out and about with it all day. I also don't have the best back and will be in pain if carrying too much weight.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

School suggests a 15 inch screen but anything 13 and above is fine

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will be using the following school-required programs: anti-virus software, microsoft office 365, audience response system, examplify, airmedia, soundflower I will be using the internet browter for typical studying/lecture-watching along with vitalcourse, scholarRX, and other eBook web services I do not anticipate CAD/video or photo editing/gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Along with the size and program requirements mentioned, the school also requires a minimum of 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD hard drive.

I would like something relatively light that I can carry with me and then plug in to a monitor at home. A tablet/stylus feature for note-taking would be cool. Reliability is important as I'll be on the laptop all day every day for years. Bluetooth so I can use my headphones. Spot for some USB plug-ins would be good so I can use flash drives and maybe charge my phone etc.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

At minimum, I need a 13 (ideally 15) inch laptop with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD hard drive as these are required by my school. Would like to pay as little as possible for good reliability/frequent daily use/studying and working. I have an iPad that I use for my personal stuff like YouTube, reading, drawing etc so this laptop is really just for school.

In need of a budget laptop that still preforms decently, any ideas on what i should get?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 11:50 AM PDT

I've been using my moms HP 15 Notebook PC that shes had for many many years now since ive been doing online school. The screen has a tiny line straight down the middle but that doesnt bother me. The laptop just doesnt hold a charge and hasnt for years aswell. Ive seen reviews on it and even though a battery for it itsnt expensive, given the laptops age i might as well get a low end laptop for now.

What i'm going to be doing is: My virtual school (done on a website), Watching youtube, and just searching things up.

A plus for the laptop is if it can at least handle a few games that i believe wont require much. Such as, Roblox, Minecraft, and League of legends for example.

I prefer something more or less under $500 since im planning on buying an expensive PC early next year. I would love it to be even under $400, but it doesnt matter as long as it could somewhat handle what ive listed above

    12700H vs 6900HX - Battery Life?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 11:30 AM PDT

I'm considering the Alienware M15 R7 and can't decide whether to go with the 12700H or the 6900HX version. I know the 6900HX has about 5-10% less max performance, but how much better is the battery life?

The only thing I do when on battery is web browsing or watching videos, so nothing intensive, but if the battery life is significantly longer on the 6900HX then I think I would go with that one. Also, the AMD version has a 150W 3070ti vs the 140W 3070ti on the Intel version.

Should I worry about this vent?

My main worry is a water drop or the ocassional saliva bubble flying off one's mouth.. what have you, anything even a damn ant could enter there.

    Am I worrying over nothing?

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 update issues

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 10:47 AM PDT

I have a Lenovo Ideapad gaming 3 with an AMD ryzen 5 4600h and nvidia 1650 and have been having a bunch of issues for some months.
When Windows 11 came out, I tried updating to it immediately, but once the update ran its course and the pc would restart, it would get permanently stuck on the Lenovo logo, so I'd have to force reboot it by holding the power button and it'd boot without any updates.
Since then I tried 3 more times and the result has been the same; I tried through the official installation management tool, but that as well gives me an error.

Since then I've had an issue with the pc that while using it, randomly a program I have open might crash and stop working until I reboot the system:
if it's Firefox it initially starts by having all my tabs crash, and if I try to reboot a couple of times it just crashes as a whole.
If it's discord it might just freeze, or go into the loading/waiting for connection screen permanently, and crash completely after a while, if I try opening it up again, it would just crash immediately.
If it happens with games they just crash immediately and if I try to open them again they crash.

Usually when this problem shows up if I close the affected program the rest of the programs I'm using run smoothly for a while, but sometimes the problem spreads onto another app, or might spread onto the whole pc, sometimes the screen turns black for a couple of seconds or there might be a "glitch" image for a second and then the display might zoom in/change its resolution on its own until I reboot the PC, sometimes the screen turns black and just freezes and I have to reboot the PC by holding the power button.

I couldn't pinpoint what triggers this because sometimes it happens 2-3 times in one day, while sometimes it doesn't happen for 3-4 days even.

Also around the same period that this started happening I noticed my CPU overheats much more easily, previously I'd never hear my fans working while just browsing the net or using Word, while now sometimes I check its temps while just typing on word and I see it's at 70C, and with games, it easily reaches 85-90C which it never did before (I've already tried to clean the fans).

Today I tried to install Windows 10 again, through the official install software, which basically does a clean install that maintains all your data, and after the blue installation screen, once the PC reboots this time as well it gets stuck on the Lenovo screen and I had to reboot it; once I turned it on I got an error from the windows setup with the 0xC1900101-0x20017 error code.

I've tried to do sfc /scannow, the disk image health restore, ran chkdsk, the windows troubleshooter of course, and updated my graphics drivers, but nothing's worked.

I don't even know if all these issues are related, but I have no idea how else to solve them, does anyone have any other ideas?
