My internet used to have slowdowns until I reset the modem/router which I noticed would get hot. Stuck a fan to them and internet runs flawlessly at full speed for two weeks now.

Netgear Nighthawk issues - am i overloading it?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:03 AM PDT

Hey all, i'll try to keep this brief.

I've recently moved in to a new house & have been in the process of smartify-ing it.

We're running everything off a Netgear Nighthawk & no matter what i do, the connect never stays solid.

    We've got:

    • Hue bridge (Ethernet)
    • 7 Sonos Speakers (split across our tv & dining room)
    • 4 or 5 Nest Hubs
    • 2 Chrome Casts
    • 2 playstations (Ethernet - via a network switch)
    • 2 laptops
    • 2 Pcs (1 on ethernet)
    • 2 ipads
    • 2 phones

Several times a day *something* drops, however it's usually not the same thing. Right now one of my Nest hubs is working fine whilst another says it can't find the wifi & i'm going crazy.

I've tried a single SSID that combined both 5ghz & 2.4hgz & splitting them. I've turned off WMM & QoS. I'm not sure if it could be a issue of conflicting IP/Mac Address? Or if it's just a case of having too much on the internet.

I'm very out of my depth when it comes to this stuff & really have no idea where to start?

If anyone is able to assist I'd be much appreciative.

    Thanks all.

    Edit:

we have fiber to the property & get about 280 down if that helps :)

How can I tell if I'm being kicked out of the internet?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 06:40 AM PDT

I live in an apartment, sometimes no one can use the internet, not even with ethernet, except this one guy. A factory reset fixes this every time, but sometimes this doesn't last, unless that guy is still asleep (right now). I found out how to choose wich device can use the wifi (MAC filtering) and how to disable ethernet ports, you only need the IP and modem password, I believe he is doing this.

Ethernet not working but wi-fi is

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 06:33 AM PDT

I have a 1.5 year old TP Link AX50 bridged to the ISP provided modem and for the most part it's been working fantastic.

However, a few days ago, I upgraded my ethernet switch from 5 ports to an 8 port to accommodate laptops in another room should I need it to be hardwired.

Not sure if that had anything to do with it but a day after that, the ethernet stopped having internet. The TV, PS5, PC, and everything else connected can confirm there's an ethernet cable attached to the port but no internet. The switch is working - it has power and the lights are flashing. Wi-Fi is perfectly working too.

I did some hard Googling but the solutions almost always involve doing commands in Windows which isn't the issue since all devices (regardless if it has an OS) couldn't detect any internet. Nonetheless, I did that to no avail. I tried a power cycle on both router and modem, switched cables, and no dice.

I saw a post about modem overheating and network drops. This prompted me to do a little feel check on mine. Still in its Buffalo Bill hole. It puts the packets on the cable else it gets the hose again.

Is it true that a cable connection will not have consistent ping like a dsl?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 07:11 AM PDT

Many years ago I tried both and cable the problem is, it always depends on the time of day and the ping can go bad. But with dsl it's consistent. Is this still the case?

    Total Renovation : New network

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 06:19 AM PDT

    Hello,

My house is close to being finished and i'm looking to buy all my material for the network.

    What i need :
    - A rack & patchpanel ( no help needed)
    - Router
    - 24 port switch (atleast 2 for 2 x AP)- 2 acess points.
    - (Also planning one taking one camera later on)

I was looking at buying the Unifi Dream Machine Pro SE together with a 24 port switch, 2x AP 6 Lite's and i'd be settled, but i'm not really sure if i want everything from one brand.. Also if the DMP breaks down i'm fucked?

Would rather have a pfsense router but i feel forced going full unifi when my AP's are Unifi's?

Any other brand or full setup recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

DNS issues over cabled network only...

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 03:09 AM PDT

Need help fixing a weird DNS issue with my home network.

This issue happend only when using cabled network, an more often when watching content on my PLEX server...

After around 30min to 1h, network stop working with DNs error in my event viewer:

Name resolution for the name edge.activity.windows.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. Client PID 14904.

When this happend, everything connected with a wire on my home network crash. To fix this issue, I need to reboot my computer.

There is also lot of DNS resolution error in the logs of my router (example bellow)

    2022-06-13 21:55:07 ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (staging.to-do.microsoft.com)
    2022-06-13 21:55:07 ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (staging.to-do.officeppe.com
    2022-06-13 22:21:12ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (lb._dns-sd._udp.6.0.0.192.in-addr.arpa)
    2022-06-13 22:26:06ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (cs.kingoflikes.com)
    2022-06-13 22:26:06ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (cs.kingoflikes.com)
    2022-06-14 00:40:43ERRDNSDNS name resolution failure (https://app-measurement.com/sdk-exp)

    Things I've tried so far:

    - Reinstalling windows on my main computer and plex server (But I had the same issue with my previous gaming computer)

    - Full reset of my ISP provided router

    - I tried using google DNS instead of ISP provided DNS but same thing

    ISP DNS (Bell) are:

    Primary DNS: 67.69.239.49

    Secondary DNS: 207.164.234.129

Routeur is Bell Home Hub 3000

Any insight on what might be happening?

What is the difference between the TL-SF1016 and TL-SF1016D?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 02:31 AM PDT

I've looked over the spec-sheets, and the only difference I could find was the indicator LEDs, and the MAC address table size.

I am quite new to all of this stuff, and for now I am only going to use it for a LAN party where we're going to be around 9-10 people using the switch as an extension to my router. I don't know if the MAC address table size would have an influence in this situation, and I've no idea if one would be better long term if I decide to get a proper networking setup at home.

There's an almost 20USD price difference, and I'm curious what those extra 20USD would by me.

    Thank you in advance!

    Network issue

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:33 AM PDT

Hello everyone, before asking here i've tried several stuff but with no success.

When i turn on my pc (w10) everything seems fine, it says it's connected to the internet normally. In reality it doesn't really work. It seems to be working extremely slowly on some sites, it doesn't work at all on other (MS Teams won't connect, discord sometimes will open and i wont be able to join channel and after several minutes, it enters with an extreme high ping - 5000+, and my antivirus servers are unreachable).
Sometimes a reboot works, sometimes it takes 4-5, sometime i pair those reboots with router restart / dns flush (i'm currently using google dns).

Wifi seems to be working fine, both on another pc, smartphone and on tv. No issues at all.

I didn't have the chance to try changing the cable, i wanted to know if that could be the case.

Today i rebooted pc router, didnt work, then proceeded in rebooting the pc, switched back to auto dns, rebooted and now seems to be working.

Connection is a 200mb connection which i never really had any issues on.

During 1 of those moments where nothing was working properly, i went on twitch.tv as a test and i could see normally 1 streaming (i wanted to see if i could see only cached sites).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance, i'm lost

VLAN Security with IP Routing (L3) Enabled on Cisco Switch

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:09 AM PDT

Hi all, I have been doing some basic Cisco labs to refresh my memory for switch configuration using the CLI. One of the labs had me set up 3 different VLANS on a 3750 switch (which has Layer 3 capabilities) and then attach computers to those ports assigned to the separate vlans. Each computer could ping its VLAN IP but not the VLAN IP for a different computer - good.

Then the lab had me enable IP Routing in the switch. This allowed the computers on the separate VLANS to ping the other VLANs and the other computers on those VLANS.

I should add that the switch port was set to access for the interfaces.

My question is, what is the advantage of enabling IP routing on a L3 switch if all of the VLANs can communicate with each other? Would it not make sense to have segregated VLANs (eg for IoT devices so they can't access your server but can get to the internet) and not enable IP routing in the first place? An expanded address space could be achieved using a different subnet mask, so it shouldn't be to make the subnet larger…

Hopefully someone can explain to me what this is all about. Many thanks!

Need a good lightweight back end dchp server/router.

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 01:02 AM PDT

    Hello there,

I'm currently setting up my new server setup at home which will be using an isolated back end on all servers for management and a heavily protected front end with port forward.

Essentially every server will have 2 ports, one front end for incoming client connections and one backend accessible through a VPN for management (SSH, remote desktop, terraform, kubecli, docker, etc...) the front end is already accounted for but the back end still needs a very lightweight dhcp server/ router. Initially my idea was to just start up another debian virtual machine which is only connected on the back end network which I can set up with a dhcp server and router. Now I was wondering if there was a more lightweight option for just dhcp and routers that is opensource like pfsense, opnsense, ipfire, etc.. I prefer not to have any of those running since they're all running a firewall as well which to me seems like a waste of resources. I could also just disable the firewall aspect of them but I might as well ask here in case someone else has a better idea that's even lighter.

    Kind regards,u/SpicyUdonNoodles

ATT Fiber + TP Link + Netgear AP

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:59 AM PDT

Hello all. My home network setup is as follows: ATT Fiber/BGW320-505 > TP Link ER605 (Standalone config) > TP Link TL-SG105E > Netgear R6700AX (AP Mode).

Plan is to have several VLANs, but first I would like to successfully pass internet traffic from the gateway to the access point.

On the BGW320, I enabled IP-Passthrough, disabled wifi, and disabled all the available options in firewall advanced.

On the ER605, so far I have 1 LAN. On the VLAN page, the LAN and WAN have different VLAN numbers.

On the ER605 and TL-SG105E all the link lights are green, but nothing from the activity lights.

    What is missing?

OpenVPN client with incoming LAN access to docker containers

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:34 AM PDT

I have a Ubuntu Machine (UM) that i want to connect to a VPN server with OpenVPN.

The OpenVPN client runs on the UM.

On this UM i also run multiple docker containers (via docker-compose, ports exposed with ports: - "7654:7654/tcp") which are reachable via LAN.

When OpenVPN is not running, i can ssh to the UM and can also access the docker containers from other LAN machines.

However, when i start the OpenVPN client, ssh connections time out (already running and newly established ones) and the docker-containers are also no longer accessible via LAN.

I was able to fix the ssh issue with the following:

    https://superuser.com/questions/819065/allow-incoming-ssh-with-openvpn-client

    # set "connection" mark of connection from eth0 when first packet of connection arrives

    sudo iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j CONNMARK --set-mark 1234

    # set "firewall" mark for response packets in connection with our connection mark

    sudo iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -m connmark --mark 1234 -j MARK --set-mark 4321

    # our routing table with eth0 as gateway interface

sudo ip route add default dev eth0 table 3412

    # route packets with our firewall mark using our routing table

sudo ip rule add fwmark 4321 table 3412

After applying these rules, i was able to ssh into the UM from other machines, yay success :)

I also tried to apply the same solution to the docker network bridge adapters (br-XYZ) and different --set-mark numbers without luck.

Changing the port declaration in some docker-compose files to "192.168.2.34:7654:7654/tcp" also did not work.

Linux-networking gods i beg you, how the duck can i access my docker-containers...

    Home network retake

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:18 AM PDT

My family is remodeling the wifi setup in our home. It is made out of two connected hauses, each around 1500sqft -see the image. We are renting apartments in the vicinity of Bled.

The current wifi setup lacks especially on the range of routers. There is a floor plan with all the signal strenght in the image bellow, the x marks the routhers, and its colour defines the range. A circled x is a wired routher, yes thesse are all of possible wired access points. The main routher-modem is the red X. The wifi signal sadly lacks on all the exclamation marks. Routers we use now are Edimax BR-6428nS V3.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/bh4I9n2

What routers and system would you choose on the setup? Was thinking of aimesh sysyem for one common ssid. Three band on the primary rauter, so there is possibility for undisturbed extenders in the upper and lower floor? Which routers would be the best for the job. If you have any videos or text that would help me choose please let me know!

    Thank you!

Revising my home network, suggestions welcome!

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 12:15 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking at revising my home network and I'd appreciate some advice.

All the hardware is Unifi, and that's not going to change because it works for me and I have no money to spend on this.

What I do want to change is how I deal with laptops that are work-related.

I work as a consultant and frequently have at least one "client" laptop as well as my work one, so I want to stick them on a dedicated network, well away from everything else.

I've put together a diagram at https://imgur.com/a/S3zkhtR and I'm hoping that is fairly clear around how I see this hanging together, but I'm also interested if there are things I can do to increase the protection of the "Trusted" network from anything that the "untrusted" devices are doing.

As far as the "Trusted VLAN networks" are concerned, that's already in place and working well, I've just added it for completeness of the diagram, so it really is the "untrusted" bit that I'm interested in here!

    Thanks in advance!

    wifi speed drops

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 05:57 PM PDT

My wifi speeds recently dropped and I was wondering if adding a small fan to my router would increase speeds

    I was getting 16 - 15mbps (download) And 1.72 - 1.53 maps (upload)

    And now I get 8-6mpbs (download) And 1.71 - 0.3mbps (upload)

    Internet Speed is too Fast?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 11:16 PM PDT

So for the last four weeks, I've been having issues with dropped packets while playing Path of Exile. Using tracert and WinMTR, I noticed that most of the packets were lost from the router to the next node (not modem). After a bunch of troubleshooting and replacing equipment, it turns out that the issue was that my modem wasn't able to support the speeds I was paying for.

I have 900 Mbps internet. The old modem was an Arris SB6190, DOCSIS 3.0 which claimed up to 1.4 Gbps support. The new modem is a Netgear CM1000, DOCSIS 3.1 for up to 1 Gbps, supposedly. I did try switching out one SB6190 for another and that did not solve the problem.

The new modem solved the problem, so not looking for solutions, but what I don't understand here is why this fixed my issue. At a glance, the modems have similar specs. Does DOCSIS 3.0 vs 3.1 make that big of a difference? Or is there some other detail I need to look at going forward?

Also, I was considering changing ISP from Comcast to CenturyLink as a potential fix, but their speeds max out at 100 Mbps for me. So if I'm experiencing issues where my modem couldn't keep up with 900 Mbps, does that mean the 100 Mbps internet would have been unbearable?

Anyway, I'd just like to understand the problem and solution, so I'll take any knowledge you guys got. Thanks.

ZenWiFi AX6600 XT8 - webpages not loading on first attempt

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 07:05 PM PDT

I have had the XT8 system for a few months and it has been working great. Excellent range and I have 100 devices and nothing ever has dropped connections. It's made my home automation work amazing. I had a bit of an issue with the first set I ordered from Amazon in that when I updated the firmware it bricked one of the units and I had to return it. Now, I have a new set and I did not update the firmware because things were working well. And given what happened before I am afraid to update again.

    Current firmware: 3.0.0.4.386_25790

Recently, despite no changes to my router settings or network, when I am trying to access a website it will often fail on the first attempt and then eventually will work. No issues with speeds and pings are good when checked. It happens on all web browsers and all of my devices. I know it is something to do with the router because when I connect my PC directly to the modem the issue is gone. I have rebooted the whole network multiple times. Again, I am afraid to update the firmware especially with some of the things I am reading about the most recent release.

Any idea what could be causing this?
