Home Networking Tools, Tips, and Tricks Posted: 05 Jun 2022 11:36 AM PDT Relatively new to this subreddit but already I have seen a bunch of posts with questions about troubleshooting physical problems with a network. So I thought I would post up some of the tools and tricks I have learned over the years. Most of my experience is both handed down to me by a friend who worked for AT&T and also self taught. So by no means is my experience the "right" way, it is simply the way that works for me. I would love to learn more from everyone here! Also note, I am posting links to where you can find these tools, so there is no confusion about what I am talking about. These are clean links, no affiliates, or anything like that, I make no money from this, I don't have a youtube channel or anything. I am sharing this because I love working with this stuff. Network Cable Tester https://www.amazon.com/Ideal-Multimedia-Tester-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000IBNXUK This device you use to check that your cable is complete and wired correctly. An essential tool if you make your own CAT cables. I like this one, very reliable and will tell you exactly which wires are miswired on the display. Even better is if you can afford a TDR tester. The TDR function will tell you the length of your cable or more importantly will tell you how far away your cable is broken. A good one will also identify which pair is broken and how far away it is. VERY helpful, also expensive. https://www.amazon.com/Triplett-TDR100-Length-Tester-Reflectometer/dp/B08BTKW2B1 Toner A Toner is another essential tool. So many uses, not only in Low Voltage work. In my opinion the Fluke is the gold standard: https://www.amazon.com/Fluke-Networks-26000900-Pro3000-Generator/dp/B000FTADX0 Note there are multiple functions and tricks with this tool. Also note, you should cover the alligator clips with the provided covers when not in use. If the leave the toner in CONT mode and the clips are touching, you will kill your battery. - First, you should know when you send a tone down the wire, it will only send the tone down the middle pair, usually Blue and Blue/White. So if your B & B/W wires are compromised you will not find your tone. See the next tool for a solution to this.. - Second, this toner will change tone everytime there is continuity between leads. So if you are at the other end of the wires, searching for them, and your not sure you found them you can touch the wires together or use the probe tip to touch the contacts of a jack and the tone will change, confirming you have found the right wire. - Third, this has a switch on the front that says Tone and Cont. On the tone setting, the tone light will light up it you plug into an active telephone jack (not network jack). Useful for phone work. The Cont setting will light up when there is continuity between the leads. So this is useful to identify a wire that is plugged into a switch because that will show continuity. This can also help, but is not 100% reliable, identify damaged cable (use in conjunction with the next tool in this list) - Fourth, sometimes the tone will not come through very strong for a myriad of reasons. You can amplify the tone if you connect the red alligator clip to the wire you want to tone and connect the black alligator clip to a good ground (if you have an electrical box nearby the copper ground wire is best). This makes the tone about twice as loud. The Banjo The banjo is an incredibly useful tool in situations where you suspect cable damage but I have used it for a bunch of other reasons: https://www.amazon.com/Greenlee-Communications-1902-Modular-Adapter/dp/B000099O64 As you can see, you connect your network cable to the banjo with the provided plug or a coupler. Now you can use your toner, connect the black alligator clip to a ground and use the red clip to test each individual wire to make sure tone reaches the other end and you will know if your cable is damaged or not. You can also just connect your black alligator click to another contact on the banjo, you don't have to use a seperate ground. The Spudger Who doesn't love a small pokey tool? Essential for me when I wire keystones, the plastic end is perfect to push a wire into the keystone slot so I can punch it down. I only buy the Jonard brand. https://www.amazon.com/Jonard-JIC-22035NT-10-Insulating-Uninsulated/dp/B007TX8TU4/ Punch Down Tool Great for keystone work and 110 telephone blocks. Make sure you buy the right heads. I like to have two of them with different heads. Also make sure you pay attention to which side of the head cuts wire. https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Storage-Interchangeable-Reversible-TC-PDT/dp/B0000AZK4D Crimp Tool Which crimper to buy is more of a personal preference thing. I don't have a recommendation, other than I hate ratchet mechanisms and I always disable them. Network Cable Stripper I hate using the strippers that are on crimpers, too easy to nick the wires. I have a favorite but I can't find it on Amazon anymore. This one I have used and its ok. https://www.amazon.com/Platinum-Tools-15015-Jacket-Stripper/dp/B000FI2RVC/ Electrician Scissors Scissors are always helpful. These are particularly nice because the notches in the back of the blade allow you to quickly strip a network wire if you need to expose it for tone testing or something like that. https://www.amazon.com/Jonard-ES-1964-Carbon-Electrician-Scissor/dp/B0069629IK Cat5 Stapler Incredibly useful. https://www.amazon.com/Arrow-Fastener-T25-Voltage-Staple/dp/B00004Z2JX Beans Also known as Scotchlok Connectors. I have seen people on here disapprove of using Scotchloks but my experience with them has been great. The alternative to using beans, you can crimp heads on your wires and use a coupler but in wet/moist/humid environments the contacts on the heads and coupler corrode. Scotchloks don't do that. In fact when I have tested a cable that was spliced with Scotchloks they don't even show up on the TDR. I love them. Use what works for you. https://www.amazon.com/Corning-Rebuild-Scotchlok-Connector-Terminals/dp/B08S45MB45 [link] [comments]
Help routing people to minecraft server over free asus router DDNS from namecheap domain Posted: 05 Jun 2022 11:22 PM PDT As the title says. I have a namecheap domain that I would like to link to my minecraft server. I used to pay for a VPS but the costs for hundreds of mods with players started to balloon due to it being so ram hungry, so i'm homehosting on a dedicated machine in my house. With the VPS, it was easy to set up my custom domain name with that (it was a static, numerical IP) following this guide (https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9765/2208/how-can-i-link-my-domain-name-to-a-minecraft-server/). My router is Asus and thus comes with the free DDNS service, but the IP you get is <hostname>.asuscomm.com. Is it still possible for me to route My Namecheap Domain -> <hostname>.asuscomm.com? I assume I would need a different combination of records to achieve this, as I can no longer route directly to a numerical IP. I asked namecheap support via the live chat, but they were like "we don't know what you're doing/don't think this is possible, try googling it" but that seems unlikely to me, unless im misunderstanding something here. TL;DR. What combination of records do i need to route my namecheap domain -> <hostname>.asuscomm.com free DDNS from my router -> Minecraft server homehost. Posted: 05 Jun 2022 08:40 PM PDT I honestly dont know much about networking stuff. We have 1gb up/down fiber. I use a pihole. I'd like to be able to have the pihole identify the devices individually (I cant remember but I think the router needs dnsmasq or something like that?) if I can. Other than that just something recent that works well. I dont want to spend an astronomical amount if I can get away with it. Thanks for any suggestions! MoCA Network Questions with Coax, ethernet, access point, and router Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:29 PM PDT Hey everyone, I just moved into my new apartment, and I have no ethernet ports in the house, and the wifi modem and router are connected on the far side of the apartment, away from my PS5. My two problems are that the router is too far from my room, so a regular ethernet cable cant reach my ps5 and my room barely gets a wifi signal. So I got 2 MoCA adapters and set them up using the coax cables wired throughout the apartment. It worked great for my ps5, but it didn't solve the slow wifi in my bedroom problem. But then I was thinking, okay, so I got my PS5 connected to the ethernet, but the wifi in my bedroom is still awful for everything else I am using. So I came up with this idea to connect modem-->MoCA adapter 1-->coax cable-->moca adapter 2--> router (in my room now for better wifi)-->ethernet to ps5. It worked great for like 5 minutes, but then all my devices said they couldn't connect to the internet (including ethernet connection). I restarted the router, and everything worked again for like 5-10 minutes before they couldn't connect again. When the devices weren't connecting to the internet, they were still appearing to be connected to the wifi, and all the lights on the router were lit up normally, just as they were before all of this when it was working normally. It was weird that everything appeared like it should have been working (all LEDs green, devices said they were connected to the wifi), but my internet would not work. For some reason, it just loses its ability to produce internet wirelessly even though it's connected to the modem through the coax and MoCA network. Can I not connect my router and modem thisway? Why does it work for a few minutes and then drop it but appear like everything is normal with all the LEDs on the router? Whats a good way around this? Should I just buy a network access point and connect that vis modem-->router-->MoCA adapter 1-->coax cable-->moca adapter 2-->access point-->ethernet to ps5 Any help on the topic would be much appreciated. Netgear router recommendations? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 11:39 PM PDT Right now I'm using a netgear n900 router me and my family have had for years. It runs decently well but I think it's definitely time for an upgrade, and am looking for advice. We live in a 2 story town home and have multiple gaming consoles and tv's. I know certain consoles don't support wifi 6 (ps5 and last gen consoles) What would be some good suggestions? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:58 PM PDT I have these two Cat6 cables. They are wired differently. I was wondering if anyone knows what this wiring style is called. The one on the right is wired straight through. The one on the left is wired in a "mirrored" or "flipped" manner. I needed it to also be "straight through", so I did a hack job splicing the wires. The other thing I cannot find any info about, is the wire colors. Posted: 05 Jun 2022 10:38 PM PDT Hi there, my ISP has turned off NTP because they are getting DDos attacks. Now when ever I turn in my smart tv or camera or any device its time and date is 1979/11/11 . Its every annoying that I have to manually set my time and date. If I don't set it manually my internet on that device does not work. Is there any way I can setup custom NTP in my wifi device so all devices connected to my wifi gets time sync and I don't have to change date again and again. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jun 2022 09:13 PM PDT Hi, I'm in the market for a new home wifi setup and I'm hoping ya'll can help with some recommendations. Right now I've got the amplifi instant system with the router on one side of the house and the meshpoint on the other end of the house connected via an ethernet backbone. I'm like 95% happy with it but due to circumstances beyond my control, I'll need to replace the whole system in the next month or so (it's a long, idiotic story; don't ask, ha) thus I'm in the market for a new setup. My original plan was just to buy another amplifi instant system to replace the current one, but they are kind of hard to find and I figure if I am going to buy a new system, I might as well try and future-proof myself a bit. A few of my wants/needs are: 1) Router + one WAP; ethernet backbone capability is required My main complaint with the amplifi instant system is that the webgui is nearly worthless garbage (can't even do port forwarding in it; have to use the smartphone app) and IMO the system in general is severly lacking in features (I get it; it's meant to be simple, and it is; I'd just prefer something a bit more feature-rich). Are there any other particular newer features that I haven't already mentioned that I should be specifically looking for? What particular router/WAP pairs can you recommend? As far as brand goes, in the past I've used linksys, netgear, and ubiquiti and I'd be fine using any of them again, but I'm also open to other brands. Any advice/recommendations is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Will I be fine off without a router in my dorm? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 08:47 PM PDT I guess that's a question I need to ask myself first, but would still appreciate your opinions. So, I've been provided with a single ethernet port in my room to which I've connected my laptop and use it as a hotspot to connect my phone to the internet. But since I'm forced to keep my laptop switched on for a long time at a stretch throughout the day even when I'm not using it, I've been a bit worried about affecting it's battery and the overall health. And so I recently started considering getting a router. But just like many students these days, I'm yet another broke and hopeless one for now (・–・;)ã‚ž . So I was thinking of getting the cheapest router I could find online, but the thing is none of the ones within my budget, call it "x" have the ability to emit 5G (Sorry, if I'm using the wrong terms). Ones that do are like "2x" compared to my budget. Do you think it'd be a bad investment to get a non 5G router for now? Do you think I'll be better off using my laptop as a 5G hotspot till I've enough money to get a capable enough router? Thank you for reading till here. I currently have a 16tb Pool of hdds on my main PC backing up over our local network to a second older PC in the living room. I am moving to college in the fall and plan on taking my main PC with me and wanted to keep the back up PC at the house im leaving. Is there a safe way to continue this backup process? Both PCs are windows and I just use network share and windows backup as of now. Adding CAT6 to townhome—how would you approach? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 08:30 PM PDT Hi all,
Was lucky to close on a townhome in this crazy market—I saw some potential to do my own cabling, but wasn't able to be as picky as I might have liked with existing infrastructure.
Some background: I am a beginner at home networking, but have been doing a lot of reading here and elsewhere. Google Fiber is coming to my town within the year, and I want to have infrastructure in place to take advantage of 2 Gig fiber. My partner and I both work from home with high-bandwidth needs, so this will be a gamechanger for us.
All and all, I want to see what the thoughts of the more experienced are, and what what you would do in my circumstance to get creative. Run lines on the exterior (I'm in an end-unit townhome)? Give up? Shell out and pay a professional?
Thanks in advance! Building a house - Considering running ethernet cabling, but confused... please advise Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:55 PM PDT Context: In the process of building a brand-new home. Currently in the framing phase. Electrical walkthrough will be in the second half of this month (June 2022). At the walkthrough meeting with the electrician, it seems like it may be a good idea to discuss the possibility of running some ethernet cables in the walls throughout the house. About the house: 2 stories, 4,236 sq ft not including unfinished basement. Living long-distance for the time being until it is finished and I move, but will be on-site for electrical walkthrough. Questions: 1) Why should I explore the possibility of running ethernet cables throughout the new house? Right now, in my current house, I use a Netgear Orbi mesh system, and it seems to work alright. I have Comcast cable Internet that plugs into my Orbi Router in the living room. On the other side of my house in the office I have an Orbi Satellite that is connected to the Router wirelessly. I then have ethernet cables that go from the Satellite to my personal desktop PC and work laptop, as well as the general home wireless network. Assuming I am also doing a mesh network in the new house to cover the large square footage, what would I be gaining by running cables in the walls? Would it just be that there would be a physical ethernet connection between my Router and Satellite(s), resulting in increased performance/throughput? 2) Should I just ask the electrician to run cable that terminates into female keystone wall plates on either end? Or ask for some sort of conduit solution? The path(s) I am anticipating the cable needing to run would not be straight, and would be long and winding with 90 degree turns. Therefore, I'm not sure a conduit would really work. Also, I'm not considering anything being attached to the ceiling. 3) If I decide to just run cable, what ethernet cable should I have put in? Cat6? Cat6A? Something else? 4) I'm having trouble working out in my head how the… logistics(?) of running cable would work. Like… what connects to what? Let's say in the new house I have my office as the point where the Comcast cable comes in and is where my Orbi Router sits. I think, "Maybe it would be a good idea to have cable ethernet connections, through the walls, to Orbi Satellites in the Kitchen, in the Living Room, upstairs in the Rec Room, and downstairs in the Basement." So therefore, that would mean each of those rooms would need their own female keystone wall plate where the ethernet cable would terminate, correct? But does that mean I would need (4) separate ethernet jacks in my office – (1) for each of the lines of cable – or would plugging from the Router into (1) ethernet jack in my office send data to all (4) different rooms/wall plates? I'm truly confused on networking mechanics and how I should be thinking about this. Thank you so much! Does installing fiber internet require drilling holes in the house? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:50 PM PDT Looking to get CenturyLink fiber installed in a house that I'm renting. The landlord emphasized that no new holes can be drilled in the home or through the walls. There are existing coaxial holes and coaxial wires, which I'm using with my current xfinity plan. Will installing fiber require any drilling new holes or other similar damage to the property? Need help understanding my modem logs. Is the problem my modem, or Xfinity? Posted: 05 Jun 2022 07:36 PM PDT I intermittently lose my internet connection throughout the day, generally for only 30s - 1min at a time. Sometimes weeks can go by without an issue and sometimes it happens repeatedly throughout the day. I've called Comcast and they even sent out a tech but have not been able to find an issue (of course, internet worked fine when the tech came over). I still think the problem is on Comcast's end because using I took a look at my modem logs and they seem to show a lot of errors but I don't really understand what they mean. Can anyone help me understand what the logs are saying, and if the problem is on my end or Comcast's? Event log

I just bought a home that has ethernet ports in every room but they don't work. Posted: 05 Jun 2022 03:23 PM PDT The Ethernet cables look like they are routed to the phone box on the outside of the house. What do I need to get these to work? Should I have them moved to a room in the house? The cable modem and router are located at the very back of the house which makes the front rooms have a very weak connection. If I plug the cable modem into the other rooms it doesn't work. Is there a way to make the other rooms work? Will linking my good router to bad modem improve internet stability. Posted: 05 Jun 2022 06:51 PM PDT So I'm Australian so we have shite internet (at least where I live) 50 down 14 up. We are with the largest ISP Telstra, They gave us a router-modem "Telstra smart modem gen 2" https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/telstra-smart-modem-gen-2 It's awful but I have another router modem which is decent "Netgear R700)" I know what you are thinking, "just use the Netgear Router" but there is an issue, when I use the Netgear Router the internet is a lot more stable but it randomly completely drops out and then I have to restart the router, However, the shitty Telstra one is wildly unstable but it doesn't full drop out. So I was thinking would there be a way I can link the 2 maybe? Maybe you the Telstra one as a modem and the Netgear one as a router? any thoughts I'm very desperate.
