    Simple Questions - May 02, 2022

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What should I change on the PCPartpicker Entry Level Intel Gaming Build before ordering?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 06:35 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Per title - want to build a pc for work and light gaming (Diablo 2 Resurrected for example).

What should I change about the Entry Level Intel Gaming Build from PCPartpicker? Or should I perhaps go with the AMD version?

Ideally would like to order everything from Amazon just so I can get it going this week.

    Thanks!

Looking to leave no traces of the prebuilt I started with.

    Posted: 01 May 2022 06:49 PM PDT

I started with an Omen Desktop 870-290, and when I became unhappy with its performance, I decided instead of starting fresh, I could use the PC as parts to make a new one, though really all I changed was the case, the cpu cooler, and added a few fans. I'm trying to get rid of the omen logo that pops up on my screen when I boot up my computer, and I don't know how. I assume I(have to wipe the hard drive and ssd and then reinstall windows, but I don't really know where to get started.

    CPU cooler for i5-12600K?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 04:46 PM PDT

What would be an appropriate cooler for the i5-12600K?

I will be using it for gaming and might overclock it.

I'm currently planning on getting the Cooler Master Hyper 212 but I'm not sure if it's good enough. I don't want to overspend either.

    Prices in the future

    Posted: 01 May 2022 10:31 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I recently have decided to upgrade to a better desktop pc. However, I will begin working in july, meaning I will get to buy everything in August. My question is, should I be concerned about the prices then? Right now I noticed prices for components are somewhat stable, do you think this will be the case 3 months later?

PC performs better at night but how do I get it to perform better during the day?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 06:24 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I made a post about a month ago with a very sudden issue I've been having with my PC. You can find the thread [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/to58uq/huge_loss_in_fps_and_stuttering_suddenly_while/ ) for context.

Something very odd I noticed though is that after a certain time, my PC would perform like I never had the current issue - usually performs great after 11pm GMT until I go to bed. Then when I wake up and use my PC, it's back to the same issues as before. I have been performing userbenchmarks here and there for the past month to test certain things.

    This is a standard day-time test: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/51611859

This is a night-time test that I just performed tonight at 2am GMT: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/52328646

As you can see, the background CPU usage drops from 65% to 1% and it makes a huge difference when playing games. I wanted to make a follow-up post to see if, with this new info, anyone has any idea on what's going on or if they've seen anything like this before?

Thanks in advance for any help!

What is the best CPU for a GTX 1060?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 01:26 AM PDT

Hi, I want to upgrade my motherboard (ASRock h110m-hdv r3.0 LGA 1151), CPU, and RAM (Crucial 12gb ddr4 2400MHz (4gb + 8gb)), but I can't decide which Intel processor to get. I want to play in 1080p 60fps (sessions of approximately 6 to 10 hrs). I don't care about graphics so I guess I'll just say low settings is enough. Also i have a 500w 80+ bronze PSU.

Thanks for any advice on the other components.

Upgrading from i7-950 to i5-12600K for old gaming desktop with GTX 1060 6GB as temporary solution?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 10:55 PM PDT

I haven't played any video games in several years and I'm looking to get back into it. I managed to get a PS5 last week but I have never been a console person. The only games I ever liked playing were online FPS with a keyboard and mouse (e.g. CS Source, RB6 Siege, Overwatch) and I'm pretty sure that I would not use the PS5 much if I keep it. So I was wondering if should return the PS5 and instead do some partial upgrades to a very old gaming desktop that I have lying around. I got the PS5 bundle for $800 CAD + tax so that's about the same budget for the parts.

I built my desktop back in 2011... and have upgraded some parts in between (GPU, SSD, more RAM, new PSU). I last tried playing RB6 Siege on it about 3 years ago and haven't used it much since because I use my laptop for basically everything. I can't afford to buy a new GPU right now with the way the market is so I was wondering if I could for the next year or two get by with just upgrading the CPU (and compatible motherboard and memory). I don't expect to be playing more than a few hours a week casually.

Current: i7-950, EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, EVO 950 512GB SSD, 16GB ram (no overclock for any)

Considering: i5-12600K, EVGA GTX 1060 6GB, EVO 950 512GB SSD, compatible motherboard and 16GB DDR4 RAM. I also have a couple WD Black hard drives for additional storage.

    That's approximately 350 (cpu) + 250 (motherboard) + 100 (ram) + 200 (windows 10; upgrade to 11 after buying) + tax = 800 CAD + tax.

I'm not up to date with PC hardware and I wanted to get some feedback before I make the decision:

    • Will this give me decent 60 FPS on medium settings and 1080p for popular FPS games like Valorant, RB6 Siege, Overwatch, Halo Infinite, Apex Legends, etc.?
    • Is it a good idea to upgrade only the CPU, motherboard and RAM as as a temporary option for a year or two until I have more money for a better GPU?
    • Any recommendations for a motherboard that can support a better GPU down the road? How's the ASUS Prime Z690-P? I've had good experience with ASUS motherboards.
    • Do I need anything else that I'm missing? Is a CPU cooler necessary? I have a normal size Cooler Master case and I'm assuming that I can still use this if I don't care about front usb-c ports?
    • Should I just keep the PS5 instead and try to get myself to play console more if these upgrades are not worth it?
    • Is the extra $130 CAD for i7-12700K worth it in the long run for gaming? I have a MBP 14 as my main driver but I do some deep learning work, and it might be nice to run some things locally on the GPU when I get one in the future but this is not a priority in terms of budget.

    UW 34" 144z with 3080 12GB

    Posted: 01 May 2022 11:48 PM PDT

    Currently I have a 27" (16:9) 65hz screen.

I assume that my 3080 12GB is wasted on such screen...?

If so, I would like to get a 34" 144hz 3440X1440. Can this card be able to push that resolution with good FPS? ( I dont mind not getting 144hz on every game)

Is this normal? - Strange sound coming from GPU when in a game

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:53 AM PDT

I recently build my new PC. All seems fine apart from a strange high pitched whining sound coming from the GPU. It constantly changes tone.

    https://imgur.com/a/r6HaM5T

(You may need to turn volume right up)

It only starts when I run a game, and it stops as soon as I exit the game.

Anyone have any ideas or insights? Should I be concerned something is wrong?
