| Would you buy a sustainable phone if it came with paid updates? Posted: 01 May 2022 05:04 PM PDT I was reading a post about sustainability in phones and why companies are reluctant to provide longer support. Major argument is that it kills revenue streams for the companies when people don't buy new phones ever few years. There are people who want their phones last several years, how could it be turned into something profitable? Would you pay for a phone that has all its parts serviceable, can last over a decade with newer parts, but can only be updated by purchasing the software update. Next question would be how many people would simply ignore the updates and refuse to pay? Let's say 10 - 15% people say for these updates and also get the latest parts that become available while the rest only replace old parts when they become useless. Can a phone manufacturer sustain itself on such a model? What could be the minimum number or percentage of these enthusiasts needed for a company like Samsung or Apple to make it sustainable from a business POV? [link] [comments] |
