Looking for a laptop for watching movies + playing Jackbox - is $250-300 used realistic?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 03:19 PM PDT

My gaming laptop is too big/heavy to carry everyday. Ever since building a PC, I don't need the gaming laptop. I want to replace it with a smaller, everyday laptop for checking emails and streaming movies. The most intense gaming I plan to do is play the Jackbox games.

    What I'm looking for:

    • Budget: Do you guys think $250-300USD is realistic? I would prefer something used/refurbished, if it's cheap enough, yet functional.
    • Features I need: 12-15" screen + 3-4lbs (reasonable size/weight for backpack), an HDMI port, headphone jack
    • Features I don't need: touch screen, 360 folding screen, ultra-light/thin
    • Build quality, performance, or battery life? Doesn't have to be fancy. I plan to travel with this laptop. So I don't want to baby it. Hopefully it performs well enough, that I don't have to wait 5 minutes just to open Google Drive. Few hours battery life is good. I don't mind using it plugged in every so often.
    • Programs/gaming: Jackbox (connected to TV), Netflix, email on firefox

This is what I'm thinking of. Not sure if my price range is realistic, so let me know! Also lmk if I need to provide any more details. BTW - I'm totally fine using one of those thinkpads, so long as you're sure it can perform well enough, and it's a good size. Otherwise, I generally buy ASUS products

Yall i need help getting a laptop from best buy!! Please help: I only have like 6 hours...

I am torn in between a couple, but i don't want to clog up things. However, I am just looking for a laptop that is close to the one I have, which is a Lenovo s145, its not fancy but it does the job. I need something that can do light gaming like sims 4, video editing for Sony Vegas, and maybe office and excel. Nothing to fancy. Here are the choices I have rounded it out too.

Should I also go with intel or AMD?

Here is another hp pavilion. However this has an AMD ryzen 3 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-15-6-touch-screen-laptops-amd-ryzen-3-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-natural-silver/6477886.p?skuId=6477886

Acer Swift X with Alder Lake U Or ryzen 7

    Posted: 30 May 2022 03:48 PM PDT

Hi everyone I am looking for a laptop for everyday tasks, coding as I am a CS student, and making music in Fl Studio. I have been looking at the Acer Swift X for quite some time and there are two options they offer the Intel variant FX14-51G and the AMD variant SFX14-42G.

The AMD model is older in design, but that's not that big of a deal except that it uses a barrel style charger instead of USB-C like the Intel variant does, BUT it comes with a 3050Ti and a Ryzen 7 5825u which I believe is a bit more powerful than the i7 1260P. The price difference between the two is $130.

Also there is the new Swift 3 SF314-512 which has the i7 1260P without the dedicated graphics for a bit less.

So, I cannot make up my mind, but I am leaning more toward the AMD variant.

Photo editing, work, maybe some casual gaming, and typical web usage (video streaming, email, etc.)

    Posted: 30 May 2022 05:56 PM PDT

Looking for a machine to handle:

    • Photo editing in Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC

    • Work tasks using Office programs, particularly Word and Excel, and AutoCAD (currently using the 2022 release).

    • A lesser want, but would be nice if I could do some casual gaming. I am not sure about exactly what games since I haven't really played any PC games lately due to lack of a machine that can handle them. I do not need to max out performance and graphics settings on games to play them.

I would like it to have at least a couple USB-A ports and an SD card reader. I was originally looking at the Dell XPS series, but they only have USB-C connectors.

As far as budget, I am looking at up to the low 2000 USD range, though I could be convinced to go up to about $2,500 for a machine that I really liked. I would prefer new, but open to high quality refurbs with good warranty (e.g., through a manufacturer's refurb program).

Ideally, I would like a 14-16" screen. I do not care much for touch screen or 2-in-1. Looking for something with solid performance and build quality. I am okay if battery life take a bit of a hit.

The amount of choices are a bit overwhelming. I saw there are some great discounts through Lenovo right now, so considering some of these that are usually more expensive than my budget. I do not need the machine right away, but I'm also not really excited about the idea of waiting 3, 4, 6 months to get it.

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx1/x1-extreme-g4/22tp2x1x1e4 -- (would likely choose 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD)

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpadx1/thinkpad-x1-carbon-gen-10-14-inch-intel/len101t0009 -- (would likely choose 16gb RAM and 1TB SSD, but this only has integrated graphics)

Was also looking at some of the Asus Zenbooks:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-zenbook-duo-14-ux482-14-laptop-intel-core-i7-32-gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-mx450-1-tb-ssd-celestial-blue/6486662.p?skuId=6486662 -- (less excited about the 1 USB-A port)

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-zenbook-duo-14-ux482-14-laptop-intel-core-i7-16-gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-mx450-1-tb-ssd-celestial-blue/6486656.p?skuId=6486656 -- (less excited about the 1 USB-A port)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Option 1: Dell XPS dell xps link w/ specs

Option 2: Asus Zenbook Pro 15 Best Buy link w/ specs ($1400)

Priorities for me are battery life and reliability.

    Thanks

Looking for mid tier gaming laptop for a casual gamer

    Posted: 30 May 2022 05:15 PM PDT

I'm starting trade school soon and they require me to buy a laptop for class work. Since I'm going to buy one and don't have the room for a PC I figured I'd go ahead and spend a little more since I want to play games also. I'm comfortable spending $1,500 and want to play games like 7dtd, terraria, left 4 dead and stuff like that. Any recommendations?

Need a FRC Drive Station/Programming laptop - uSA, preferably less than $1000

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000USD is a good maximum, although if there is something great for $1100 or something that's fine.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

From most to least important: battery, build quality, performance. We have no need for a specific form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It should be portable, but it doesn't need to be an ultrabook. Something like a Thinkpad is absolutely fine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      13"-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some CAD may be done in solidworks, but it's mainly for programming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard would be nice since we will be programming on it, as well as a nice touchpad, but low priority. Build quality is important, as this will be carried around a fair bit. Ports are also useful - mostly USB (either A or C), and it would be nice to have a separate charging port so we can charge and use USB. Ethernet is a plus. Touch screen, biometrics, good camera, etc, are not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop is going to be used for my FIRST Robotics Competition team - mainly for programming (Visual Studio Code) and being used to control the robot, both during work sessions and at competitions. RAM is a good plus for programming. Battery is truly the most important thing, especially for competitions. It may be used for CAD a bit, but that's not required, so I'd rather save the money and get weaker graphics performance.

Debating between getting an M1 MacBook Pro vs Windows laptop for programming and CAD

    Posted: 30 May 2022 03:27 PM PDT

Suggest me a specific Windows laptop if you think that's the better choice (currently leaning towards the Dell XPS 15)
