Posted: 03 May 2022 05:45 AM PDT Hi all, I'm not an expert on home networking, but I didn't know where else to get help on this. I just left Austin, TX, where I had Spectrum cable Internet. With Spectrum, I had great reliable wi-fi speeds throughout the house, even though I only had a single modem/router in the living room. All my devices connected via wi-fi. I just moved to Houston, TX, and got AT&T fiber for speeds up to 500 mbps download speed. The internet is absolute garbage. It's very slow, to the point where Netflix has trouble loading. Also, it comes in and out, and my wife and I get kicked out of work conference calls. Speeds over wi-fi hit 70 mbps download, sometimes down to 30. I called AT&T and they sent out a person to check the Internet. Here was his explanation:
He left after getting it back up to 500 mbps, and a few days later it went back down to 70 mbps.
But here's the fishiest part--I cleared my cache on my browser, and BOOM, 600 mbps download speeds. This feels so fishy to me. I shouldn't have to clear my cache, since often that makes websites load faster. Can anyone explain why this might happen and if I'm being taken on a run for my money? I don't feel confident enough to call them again, because they're just going to talk over me again and tell me I need to buy their wi-fi extenders. [link] [comments]

How to handle applications on a shared network location and their subsequent folders? Posted: 03 May 2022 06:44 AM PDT I have two windows 10 machines. A laptop and a server. The server contains a folder called 'NAS' that is shared on the network. In the NAS folder i have created a folder called Program Files and installed the program FL Studio. On the laptop i can access NAS by typing it's network location in the address bar of windows file explorer. I can launch the program and also create shortcuts to it on my desktop. It launches extremely fast and functions nearly flawlessly. The only issue is that some files are stored in %USERNAME%/Documents/Image-Line on the server. Because the laptop does not have this folder, FL Studio crashes if i try to load samples or acts like i don't have the proper licensing for some of the plugins. I tried creating an Image-Line directory on the laptop and pasting shortcuts in it. I shared the Image-Line directory as a network share and the shortcuts point to all the things in the servers Image-Line directory. Of course it still crashes when i do this. The laptop has very limited storage and can't afford to give precious space to all these samples and plugins. Is there a better way to install this program so it's accessible to the laptop and fully functional? Forgot to mention, the samples and plugins work just fine when it is run directly on the server [link] [comments]

Some devices that previously connected to home network now can’t even find the network Posted: 03 May 2022 07:33 AM PDT So for background, and because I'm not sure if it relevant information or not, last weekend there was a crazy wind storm that ripped our neighbors tree out of the ground and that tree promptly took out the whole towns internet. ISP came and fixed all the lines and everything was going great. However, a few days ago, some of our devices randomly disconnected from our Wi-Fi and wouldn't connect back. After unplugging the router and the fiber optic box, everything was fine again. For a few hours that is. Now, three of our devices: Roku Express, and two Visio smart TVs, can't even find the network. To ensure that it wasn't a device problem I tested each with my phones hotspot and they connected just fine. We've tried factory resetting the devices AND the router and nothing has worked. I've changed the channel to every available one in the router settings, nothing. Not even our ISP knows what to do. Could really use some help as the Roku device that won't connect is in our main living area. [link] [comments]

Nighthawk Router MR80 - treating 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as separate networks Posted: 03 May 2022 07:16 AM PDT For some reason, my router has started to treat the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands as to distinct and separate networks. I do not know how to fix this. I've tried rebooting the router, updating firmware, resetting to factory settings, etc. etc. My settings appear correct, there is only one single SS ID that is broadcasting all my devices are connected to it, but if one device connects to 2.4 GHz and the some other other device connects is 5 GHz they do not act like they're on the same network. I am stumped. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 07:15 AM PDT Sorry if my question is a bit basic and dumb, but there doesn't seem to be that much information on this online. When we request and access a page online, is it all done over a single session (Session layer). I'm doing research for a project at college, but there seems to be opposing information online. One site is saying that once a page has been received the session is terminated and the browser automatically sets up new sessions to retrieve extra information such as pictures, CSS, videos etc. However, I've also read in multiple places that a session is established when data is requested, and it's terminated once it's fully received. So wouldn't that mean that the session is established and kept open until the full webpage is received? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 May 2022 07:00 AM PDT Hi all. I'm having work done on my house, a lot of work. I asked the sparky to run cat6 from most rooms and the attic down into my under stairs cupboard where I have a unifi switch. I have several of their aps around the house but fancied running some cat6 to each room too. Seemed silly not to when every room is going to be replastered. He wanted to leave the tails of the cable just crimped in connectors and coiled up when not in use. This would mean I have about six cables coiled and taped to the wall. I suggested to terminate them all in a row of sockets. Then I could simply use patch leads from the socket to my switch if/when I wanted to connect the socket in x room, save the jumble of wiring. In his words "you'll get the best connection from a trailing lead, minimising sockets is the best idea". I can see where he's coming from but I'd not have thought it would be that much of an issue. Keen to know your thoughts! [link] [comments]
exposing port from router connected to the other router Posted: 03 May 2022 06:55 AM PDT Hey guys, I have recently wanted to expose a port to my raspberry pi for learning purpose, however I'm unable to ping my public ipv4 from the web. I've forwarded correct ports and attached a correct internal, static IP of the device. Websites checking the port availability are still showing that such ports are closed to the world. My question is if is it possible that because I have a router connected to another router (but serving as a separate network - NOT an access point) could cause some problems with exposing such port to the world? I'm quite green on this subject, that's why I'm asking. [link] [comments]
Please help! Netgear Orbi vs Ruckus ICX 7150-C12P (Newbie. Please go easy on me) Posted: 03 May 2022 03:04 AM PDT First let me preface this by apologizing for potentially sounding like an absolute idiot. I've worked in tech for almost 10 years and I'm usually the one who answers stupid questions. Now I get to be on the other side I guess. I just moved into a 3 story townhome a couple days ago. It was built in 2020 and had one previous owner. I've been using Wi-Fi6 Netgear Orbi's for a while now and they work phenomenally. After moving in a couple days ago I quickly got to work setting up the Wi-Fi. I do a lot of gaming, streaming, work from home, video conferences etc. and need very fast Wi-Fi and love the Orbi's because I can place them strategically to eliminate dead zones. I called my Fiber ISP, they said it was active and ready to go. Then after several hours of plugging my Orbis into every fiber port in the house with no success, I finally got frustrated enough to open my utility closest to see if I could find a way to hardwire in somewhere else. That's when I stumbled upon this large box that says "Lennar Homes" and inside it is a "Ruckus ICX 7150-C12P" box with several Ethernet cables running into it. Since this is already getting long, let me try to sum it up. I turned to my trusty Redditors a few hours ago to figure out what all this is about and found out that "Lennar Homes" is building these homes with Ruckus switches built in or something. I have a little box with Ethernet's on the ceiling of my master, another on the middle floor ceiling and the main ICX 7150 in the basement. Now all this being said, I have a couple questions.
Thanks in advance guys. I genuinely appreciate the help with this. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 06:40 AM PDT Hello - I'm asking for advice. I'm shopping for 500 ft of Cat6 cable to run 4 PPoE cameras. I'm very new to networking but have narrowed my selection to the Monoprice and True Cable brands. I'm wondering what the difference is between these two offerings. It's not jumping out at me as they both look essentially the same but price for the True Cable is considerably more. I'm assuming there is a bit of "you get what you pay for" going on here but I am just not seeing what aspects/features of the True Cable is superior when I compare the two offerings. Looking for some experienced eyes to let me know what the difference is. True Cable: https://www.truecable.com/products/cat6-riser-ethernet-cable-unshielded?variant=16669722280003 Thanks in advance! TP-Link tl-sg3428 - Does it include what you need to rack mount it? Posted: 03 May 2022 05:16 AM PDT I'm going to be installing a new home network soon. I need a POE switch for the few access points I have along with the wired devices I'll use. I've never used any rack mounted gear, but wanted to get a small one for a patch panel and switch. If I buy the tp-link tl-sg3428 will it come with the stuff I need to rackmount in the box? [link] [comments]
Questions about Xbox series X double NAT detected. Posted: 03 May 2022 04:43 AM PDT Hi all, I have a deco x60 eu variant mesh system in my house. 5 total towers. I have an external router connected to the first (main tower) providing the internet. 3 towers are wirelessly connected, one is backhauled (office)to the 1st main tower. The office tower is wired into my series x and I get great speeds but I always have moderate NAT type as it's saying I have a double NAT detected. I also have ipv6 enabled and connected. I cannot get my series x to move to open for more than a few minutes. Any idea what setting I need to change on the Xbox, the deco system, or the OG router? [link] [comments]
Finding a compromised device on a network Posted: 03 May 2022 04:24 AM PDT Not really sure where to go with this one... My parents recieved a letter and an email from their ISP, saying that their network has participated in a DDOS attack. These appear to be genuine, and not a phishing attempt etc. They were away from home at the time, and all their personal devices (PCs, laptops etc) were all shut down and phones were in their posession, which narrows the search slightly. We have checked all these devices with malwarebytes anyway, which found nothing. There was one Windows fileserver which was on. Again, malwarebytes negative, and there shouldn't be any external access to it. It was previously set up as a VPN and RDP server, but those services have been disabled for several months, and the NAT rules were removed at that time. That leaves a broad array of smart home type devices (Sonos, some smart sockets etc). There are three which communicate externally -- the heating controller, alarm system controller, and CCTV DVR. These are all "black box" type devices of various brands. I've looked through the very limited logs that the Netgear router saves. Unfortunately they don't go back far enough to cover the reported time of the incident in question. The majority seems to be the usual malicious traffic you'd expect on an internet-facing interface, but there were a few possibly aberrent entries:
All concerning the same device (the CCTV DVR). To me all they really signify is that the DVR was making an external connection, and this may well be within normal operation as it is externally accessible via an app. The DVR is some sort of rebranded device I think which there is almost no information about online. Do you think the above possibly incriminates the CCTV DVR as being the problem? If not, can you think of a way to find the source? The Netgear router doesn't seem to log/filter for outgoing traffic. Presumably there is a compromised device somwehere on the network! [link] [comments]
Tp-Link Deco M5 vs M9 for small apartment / 50Mbps Posted: 03 May 2022 03:52 AM PDT Hi all, home networking novice here. The two of us live in a two-bedroom apartment, masonry walls, about 100m2. Usual smart phone (x2), laptop (x2), smart TV (x1) set up. We have a single Netgear wifi router that isn't cutting it in the second (far) bedroom. Hoping to install a wifi mesh system (2 pack) for better coverage and hopefully speeds. The devices will only be about 10m apart, but all internal walls are single-skin brickwork. We only get 50mbps via NBN down where (Australia) so I don't think speed from the wifi system itself will be a limiting factor. I was originally going to get the M9 2-pack: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07GFNXBDT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ANEGB3WVEVKZB&psc=1 But figured I'd look into the M5 2-pack and potentially save myself $100: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07BK96BL7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ANEGB3WVEVKZB&psc=1 For our use case, is the M5 adequate? Are there any compromises I should be made aware of? Or should I just splurge for the M9 and future proof should we move into a small house in 3-5 years? Cheers [link] [comments]

NAS Drive through Netgear D6220 & Google nest Posted: 03 May 2022 03:03 AM PDT Hi all, I have recently purchased a Synology NAS which is connected via wired to my Netgear D6220. The Netgear functions as Modem, wired connection to Google Nest which functions as WiFi router. All devices in my house connected to Google Nest as speeds are superior over connecting to the Netgear Wifi. I would like to be able to access the Synology NAS afp/smb while connected to Nest router, despite it being connected to the Netgear Modem.... Any suggestions? Location is Sydney, AUS if that matters :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 May 2022 02:38 AM PDT What are the possible configurations for having a single machine (hardware) connected to multiple switches for redundancy as well as load balancing - at the same time? I am fairly good in networking but failing to find/understand how, for example datacenters, achieve full redundant/balanced network loads on all their networking devices. One can do LACP on Connections between a single switch and a single host. It is even possible to do that over multiple switches (LACP-Group) but often just for enterprise class switches. How would one approach this with consumer hardware for example? Thank you very much in advance :3 [link] [comments]

Creating a site-to-site VPN with Ubuntu server, Raspberry Pi 3B+, and OpenVPN Posted: 03 May 2022 12:22 AM PDT TL;DR: Can I use a Raspberry Pi as a gateway to connect two LANs without having to set up the VPN on each client? Already have a working OpenVPN server. CGNAT on one end and lack of IPv6 on the other make alternatives (that I'm aware of) a hassle, but more than happy to hear of others. Background I've recently transitioned my home server (mainly for Plex and a Unifi network controller) from Windows 10 to Ubuntu server (22.04 LTS). It was living at my parents' house as they have a 900/900 FTTP connection vs my 72/18 ADSL, but during the time I had the server away configuring it, their ISP has turned on CGNAT and all my port forwards have broken. So I have it back at mine, and everything's working again, except for remote management of their Unifi access points. I'm assuming this is something to do with the CGNAT, like, the APs can find my server but can't tell it how to get back to them, or something along those lines? I'm fairly new to this stuff so apologies if I'm using terminology wrong or misunderstanding concepts! I thought of switching everything to IPv6 instead (been using DDNS with No-IP) but my ISP doesn't support it yet and I've still got 17 months left on my contract. Another option seems to be paying £8 a month to get a static IP at my parents' but if I can find another way to get a 'good enough' solution that would be preferable. New Plan + Request for Advice So my current thought is to do a site-to-site VPN. I followed this guide to set up OpenVPN on my server, and it works well for single client connections. I'm wondering if I can use my Raspberry Pi 3B+ at my parents' house to act as a VPN gateway to have a full time connection between the LANs, so the APs can connect to my server as if they were local (but still have general internet traffic go directly from their connection, no point routing that over my much slower one). If anyone can walk me through it that would be amazing, but I'm not really sure where to start with this or what the correct terminology is to search for so even just a point in the right direction would be amazing. More than willing to switch to a different VPN setup if there's something that would work better. Or if anyone has suggestions for an entirely different solution, that would also be fantastic. Thanks so much to anyone who can help! \Edited for readability* [link] [comments] |
