Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:12 AM PDT Let me explain: I have a very old ASUS laptop, a X44C from 2011 (i3 2350M, 4GB DDR3 RAM) and even windows 8 (Yeah, Win 8) it's running pretty slow and shittier. I just need a very user friendly and lightweight distro for that PC, I don't want to play any games or anything, just browse the web, make some office things and program basic stuff sometimes I really want to give Fedora a shot but i'm not sure if it's going to run on it Please help me! Can't afford a new one unfortunately... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2022 04:45 AM PDT I have Manjaro installed on my spare drive, but I'd like to try other GUIs. But the problem I had with Manjaro was that it booted to it first instead of Windows. It took my friend over 2 hours to make it boot to Windows first. Then I had a problem with the clock being fucky but I got that fixed myself. Question is, how easy it is to make it boot to Windows first I wouldn't have a problem with this but I use my PC as an alarm clock and it doesn't work if it boots to Linux first. [link] [comments] |

Dual monitor setup with different refresh rates gets downclocked on nvidia gpu? Posted: 01 Apr 2022 11:20 PM PDT I have a 144hz monitor and a 60hz one. My gpu is nvidia gtx 1050Ti. When they're both on they work and all but both operate at 60hz even if i change the refresh rate to settings or nvidia x settings. When i unplug my 60hz monitor the other one goes to 144 just right after. I've seen other people face this issue as well but haven't found much support or solved issues. Any idea how can i fix this? I'd appreciate. [link] [comments] |
Considering ditching Windows for Ubuntu, some questions Posted: 02 Apr 2022 09:46 AM PDT I have used a dualbooted laptop for almost 2 years now and lately I have been encountering problems with grub menu not showing up when booting, as such it has been a hassle to boot into linux by first going into windows. I haven't been able to fix the problem. So I started to consider ditching windows entirely as I really don't use it that much and I also have a windows desktop for gaming. The laptop is mostly used for programming stuff and using linux is much easier when it comes to that. I'm not a advanced linux user as I just installed it and started using it without any big changes or configurations other than visual ones. Therefore I have some questions to experienced users:

Posted: 02 Apr 2022 10:31 AM PDT I've initially made a bootable USB drive (like actual installation instead of a 'live CD') with Lubuntu in it just in case I need to recover data while my Windows installation is bricked. But as time goes on, I took an interest in actually learning how to use Linux-based OSes. Question is: Is Lubuntu an actually good starting point for PC-savvy beginners or will I miss out on something that's ommited here when compared to regular Ubuntu? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2022 04:28 AM PDT Hello I'm thinking change to Linux (distro have not been chosen, yet). In what concerns to programs, I'll be using only web browsers, LibreOffice, and one or another software, but nothing too "heavy". When it comes to games, it is a different story. I've a library that goes from Steam, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Origin and Epic Store. Will I lose the possibility to play any game from those Stores? [link] [comments] |

"Alienware aw2518h" weird power save issue. On "Debian 11" Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:06 AM PDT While trying to change display resolution or launch "Victoria 2" the monitor goes into power saving mode. And refuses to come out of it. It also changes the button that turns the monitor on and off, orange instead of the usual blue while it is turned on. I tried to turn of power saving mode in the settings but that did not work. I tried to unplug the monitor but it did not turn on when I plugged it back in. Also this only started happening recently. Using Whonix with a Parrot Security OS (as main OS) Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:41 AM PDT I am planning on browsing via Tor a lot. Also I am learning programming and studying Computer Science while learning about hacking/cybersecurity in free time. Few questions here:
I have 1 SSD with 500GB and 1 HDD with 300GB. So, if somebody have some other ideas about how I could gain maximum security and privacy while still have ability to program and study with combination of those 2 storages (or just 1), please be free to share. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:31 AM PDT Hey, I'm I started a new job replacing a developer who left. I need to access source code in the handover notes it says "the source code a docker deployment is located in VMx on /services/app. I log into the debian linux machine as a super user and try "cd /services/app" and get "cannot cd to /services/app" - I also try sudo -s -> cs /services/app and still no luck. Any ideas would be very helpful, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Music production with Native Instruments and others? Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:03 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm about to get myself a new computer and with that I'd like to ditch Windows for good and make the move to Linux. So far, most of what I need for my daily drive is working just fine. The only thing I'm having trouble getting to work in my test runs is: I'm doing some music production with Native Instruments and Ableton and I can't for the life of me get that stuff to work under Linux. I'm not commited to Ableton as my DAW and I'm aware that there are very capable alternatives available. But I'm kinda stuck with the Native Intruments universe, their controllers, Komplete, Maschine… Is there any way to make software and plug-ins like those mentioned work in Linux like it does on Mac or Windows? Has anyone here had any luck with that? I'd love to get some advice. My alternative right now is to just dual boot, but I'd really like to avoid that and be done with Windows altogether. Thanks a lot, any help is much appreciated! [link] [comments] |

LED bar on my laptop doesn't turn on Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:44 AM PDT I switched to linux a while ago and I haven't gotten my laptop's LED bar to work yet. Are there any drivers that would generally work? I have Arch Linux installed on my Asus Zenbook Pro Duo UX581 if that helps. TIA! [link] [comments] |

Graphics Problems on Latest Linux Kernel Posted: 02 Apr 2022 12:06 AM PDT My Windows installation was corrupted so I thought this is the right time to try out Linux as my main OS. I installed Linux Mint 3 days ago and I set it up. Now, here are my problems: Problem #1: Display Problem on Linux Kernel UpdateWhen I update my Linux Kernel from I'm sure this is not Linux Mint specific because this also happens in other distros such as Arch, Manjaro, Pop!_ OS, Ubuntu, and Tails. I only managed to run Kali and Mint. Problem #2: AMD Driver ProblemI cannot fix Problem #1 so I reverted to Kernel version Here's the notification that pops up everytime I run Linux Mint.
