This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Got a "free" 2tb nvme ssd

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 10:16 PM PDT

Bought a used mobo off ebay from a bulk reseller to replace a broken identical one. When I was swapping the motherboard out I went to install my gen 4 drive and found a wd sn750 2tb just chilling under the heatsink. Cant imagine that happens often lol.

Finally got the email from EVGA after more than a year in the queue, I had almost forgotten I even signed up.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 11:02 AM PDT

I signed up for a few different cards on March 12, 2021. The one I was alerted of today was the two fan 3060ti, P5-3663-KR. I'm really excited, I had basically given up on getting a current gen card and resigned myself to waiting until things were back to "normal."

    I'll probably want a new monitor now too, I'm currently on a 144Hz 1080p.

edit: I paid $465 for the card after using the associates code from /r/buildapcsales, before tax and shipping.

Hopefully someone finds the dates of my signup and fulfillment useful, gl everyone.

    Upgrading prebuilt

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:50 AM PDT

Hey! So I got a prebuilt PC around 2 years ago that has a good CPU (i5 9400F) but a really bad GPU (GT 710). I want to get a GTX 1650 and I know that my motherboard has a PCI Express x16 but I really don't see the card being that small… My motherboard is Asus Prime H310M-R R2.0. Does anyone know if I can actually upgrade to the 1650?

Buying a monitor is so hard.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 03:09 AM PDT

I'll be getting an Nvidea card soon (3070 most probably) and buying a monitor to go with it extremely tiresome.

I've decided to go with a 1440p 144hz 27 inch one just to name the major specs. Here's where things get interesting. Many monitors support G sync and Freesync too. Some support just G sync and some support just freesync. How am I supposed to understand which one of these will go okay with my card, given I'm shooting for zero taring while gaming?

PC not booting anymore after changing motherboard

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 08:08 AM PDT

    CPU: Ryzen 3 2200G
Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX II
    RAM: 2x8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000Mhz
    Drives: Samsung EVO 860 500GB and Kingston A400 480GB
GPU: Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GD5
Power supply: Cooler Master MWE Gold 550W

I have used this computer for 2.5 years. A while back my computer with the same components but a different motherboard (ASROCK B450 PRO-F) would just randomly power off during use. This got to the point that it would turn on for a bit but then not boot at all and just shut down. I figured out that with one stick of RAM installed it would work normally. After a couple of days the computer would turn off randomly even during very mundane things like browsing the internet. This was when I decided to change my old motherboard for a new one (MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX II).

After installing all the components and powering it however, only the PSU fan and the case fans would run a bit but then immediately shut down. I sent it back to the shop I purchased it from and they told me the motherboard works just fine and that they also updated the BIOS to the latest version for me. After they sent me back the motherboard with the updated BIOS I still had the same problem that I had before.

I cleaned my PC after I got this problem. I have tested the power supply with the paperclip trick and it worked fine. Both of my sticks of RAM had the same result with my old motherboard. I was able to use my computer normally for internet browsing for like 20-30 minutes before it would shutdown with my old motherboard. I'm honestly at a loss for what could be the problem and how I can determine it. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this “starter” worth building upon?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:41 AM PDT

My endgame is to make a rig more than capable of playing tarkov on high/normal settings. I can get more info if this isn't enough.

    Specs:

    https://imgur.com/a/AUTQUSa

    OP is asking $200 initially.

He also has a monitor , keyboard and monitor (undisclosed brands thus far) for an additional $50 and I'm sure the price is negotiable. Edit; razed keyboard, mouse and RGB pad. HP basic monitor.

Thoughts on this $850 pc build for casual warzone

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 04:22 AM PDT

This is Not for Warzone Only

This is my very first pc build. I want to run warzone at 1080p and lets say medium/high settings. I was wondering if this pc is sufficient for this.

    Edit: Raised budget to $900

Best cpu combo with rtx 3060 ti?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 10:47 PM PDT

I recently bought a 3060 ti for 1080p gaming(…no i won't move 2k yet) but as i was doing research on a cpu i saw the ryzen 5600x and 5800x and i saw some benchmarks on youtube stating that gameplay performance will be the same regardless of cpu you choose, but as i look at actual live benchmark reviews on 3060 ti with 5800x it shows having in almost all games a 20 fps or 10 fps increase, are they lying? or does zen 3 scale better with high end gpus?

so i wanna know if the 5800x is good for 1080p on rtx 3060 ti, i have a mircocenter near me to purchase them easily

UPDATE: really appreciate your guys advice, a lot of you were recommending intel for the obvious better performance, i didn't mention that i'm open to switch platform, i already have an amd board i use that supports zen 3 and i can't really put cost into new intel motherboards since the better boards are too expensive, and i rather not go dirt cheap on boards so i'm sticking with amd until next big upgrade for next gen or something

    K cpu cheaper than non-k - should I?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 04:55 AM PDT

I was already to buy the non-k 12th gen but it has gone up in price and the K cpu is now cheaper.

My main concern is power efficiency and would have chosen lower clock speed 2.1 GHz non-K vs 3.6 GHz K as my workload is normal and not intensive.

So my question really is, under normal workload will the K cpu be much higher temperature and can I underclock it to run at 2.1 Ghz.

Or am I just better off paying a bit more for the non-K and then not have to worry about extra power draw.

Help! Choosing correct antenna for motherboard

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 03:18 AM PDT

    Good morning,

I need some antennas for the back of my z170 Deluxe board. The Asus 3t3r antenna isn't in the box.

Will pretty much any antennas work as long as they're female? Like this?

Why do antennas mostly come in pairs but my board has 3?

Recently ordered a cpu cooler for my A8-7600 (fm2). The product page lists Fm2 socket and AM4 socket and others, but in all the reviews and product images i can only see 1 mount in the box

So it it possible that the mount will fit in both the sockets? Because i tried to fit an AM4 cooler before but it didnt fit.

SSD Mobo compatibility confusion (old mobo)

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:17 AM PDT

I'm trying to purchase an SSD for my computer as it's been running on a HDD for around 10 years now. My PC specs:

    CPU: i5 4690k 3.5Ghz

    GPU: Zotac GTX 970 4GB

    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz

    MOBO: Asus Z97M-PLUS

    Storage: 1TB HDD Sata.III

Power Supply: 600W not sure if Gold/Bronze/etc.

It's a pretty old rig. I saw on the manual that it has a M.2 socket that can support M key type 2260/2280 SSD. I asked elsewhere and they said it might not support that. On crucial's website they say these SSD's are compatible: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/asus/z97m-plus but are a bit high priced for my budget.

Does a m.2 NVMe work for my mobo? I was looking at a WD SN570 500gb, would that work? Are there better alternatives? Sorry I don't know much about storage, any help is appreciated!

Best Ryzen CPU for my current pc

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:15 AM PDT

    My current specs are:

    CPU: ryzen 5 1600

    GPU: rtx 3060

    RAM: 16gb

    MOBO: Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac

CASE: fractal design define nano s

I have been thinking about upgrading my CPU, but seems like the best I can get is 3rd gen ryzen, I've been looking at ryzen 7 3800x for about 260€. Of course the new ones are a better deal, however that'd mean I have to buy a brand new motherboard and most probably a case as well considering this is ITX. Would it be worth spending more on new parts vs just getting the 3800x? Thanks

    3070 Ti Driver won't install

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:10 AM PDT

My pc won't install any new drivers for my card. When I try to install the new drivers from the Nvidia website it just says that the graphics card installation failed. I've used DDU to get rid of the old drivers and not sure what else I can do. I've gone into Device Manager to try and fix the issue but it just says "Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them. I tried troubleshooting with this video but still no luck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkWiry-Mgvo&ab_channel=ASATechnical

Here are the parts to my PC, I don't know if it may be a compatibility issue or a common problem with this GPU: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Deniseus/saved/#view=R3cb23

Sanity check on a 7 year upgrade

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 02:43 AM PDT

I tend to upgrade my PC once every 5-7 years and buy "pretty good" for the moment without paying much attention to budget, and then don't pay any heed to the market again until I feel my PC isn't keeping up with things, or I'm being limited space/speed/visual quality.

Current build from 2015 is as follows:

    • i5 4690K
    • MSI Z97S SLI Krait Mobo
    • ASUS GeForce GTX 970 Strix
    • Kingston HyperX Fury HX318C10FW2/16GB
    • Samsung 850 EVO 250GB - (23.5K power on hours 28 TB written)
    • WD Blue 1TB - (23.5K power on hours)
    • EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 Gold PSU - (I'm presuming 23.5K power on hours also)
    • NZXT Kraken X61 AIO - Honestly no idea what the remaining shelf life might be
    • LG 27MP77HM-P 27" IPS - 1080p main monitor
    • Dell P2214H 22" - 1080p. I got this for free and its my second (vertical) monitor
    • NZXT H440 Razer mid tower case - Nothing specifically wrong with this, still looks new

My use case is as follows:

    1. I like casual gaming (simulators and city builders frequently heavily modded, beautiful single player titles, infrequent online FPS). Would want to play Cyberpunk/MFS22 and other similarly demanding games, and definitely want to step up from 1080p.
    2. Within the realms of not building a ridiculous boondoggle I want to set games to ultra and not have to worry too much about it.
    3. I want it to feel snappy for another 5 to 7 years. I don't really care about XYZ advance in computing being "just around the corner" so for example I'm perfectly happy sitting on a 3080 and DDR4 until I go again in 5-7 years.
    4. I thought I'd over clock my current build but haven't. I suspect I won't bother with this one either but its ok if it has the option. Maybe I want to give up my career and become a failed content creator and need a boost in 1-2 years.

The build I have lined up so far:

    • i5 12600KF 10 core
    • MSI MAG Z6990 Tomahawk wifi DDR4
    • ASUS Geforce RTX ROG Strix 3080 OC 12GB
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16) DDR4 3200MHz C16
    • Samsung 870 EVO 2TB 2.5" SATA3 6GB/s V-NAND SSD
    • Corsair RM1000x 2021 1000w 80+ Gold PSU
    • Monitor - No clue but want 32" or larger, willing to splurge. Unsure over 1440/4K and 16:9/UW flat/curved etc
      • 4k - Possibly Gigabyte AORUS Fi32U 31.5" 144Hz 4K 1ms HDR400 IPS
      • 1440p - Possibly Gigabyte AORUS Fi32Q 31.5" 165Hz QHD 1ms HDR400 IPS
      • May re-use the Dell P2214H 22" as I really like having a vertical monitor as a second screen
    • Will probably re-use the case unless I can find a really minimal brushed aluminum monolith. I have RGB parts obviously but I don't care about it much and like it subtle.

    My Questions:

    1. Have I gone horribly wrong anywhere with a bottleneck, good paired with bad, compatibility issue etc.
    2. Should I re-use my PSU or upgrade given its age/wattage?
    3. Should I re-use my AIO or replace (with AIO or Air) given its age?
    4. Should I re-use my 850 EVO as a boot drive, with 2TB SSD for "everything else"
    5. I realise its polarising, but 4K or 1440p with my build?

Any other advice is well received, particularly as I haven't looked in anger at scoping out a new build in 7 years. I'm not looking to min max anything, but if there's a clear "spend $10 more and win everything" scenario then great I want to hear about that.

Thanks anyone and everyone for the help!

    Is my gpu dying?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 08:15 AM PDT

So today i was playing rainbow six siege when suddenly all screens become black and the gpu's fans starts spinning at max rpm

The first time i thought it was one time problem so i restarted the pc

Then i re-open r6s, same problem after about 3 minutes

Restarted again, but this time i did nothing for about 5 minutes, then open r6s. After about 3 minutes the problem appears again, is my gpu dying?

I don't think is a temperature problem bc it was running at 49-53°

Specs: Asus B550-E 8x2 Ballistix 3200 mhz Ryzen 7 3800x Asus 2060 oc Cooler Master 650w psu And I don't know if this is important but there's an Aio too

Can I stay on the i7 11700kf for a while?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 08:13 AM PDT

So I was offered a gaming pc for 2100 € with a RTX 3080 ti which I bought without really thinking as I think it is a good price. Only thing is that it has a i7 11700kf. Now I'm being told by friends that my cpu is to weak for the gpu and I should upgrade to at least a i5 12600 if I wanna play coming AAA Titels in 4k. Is it worth it?

Replacing old GPU in new-ish PC. Wattage/GPU question

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 08:13 AM PDT

    Hello people,

Last year, I put together a build, but with the rampaging GPU prices I had to postpone upgrading my GPU. Slowly but surely, I'm looking into upgrading my GPU so that my build isn't so bottlenecked anymore.

I'm not the richest guy, so it's a very big deal for me to get this right in the given circumstances. Right enough that I seek for help, because it's a little bit more than just "what GPU should I get?". Let me drop down my specs and after I'd like to elaborate on my plan. Thank you for bothering so far!

    • OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit
    • MB: Gigabyte B460 HD3
    • CPU: i7-10700k (be quiet! Pure Rock 2 Fan 120mm)
    • GPU: GTX 1050ti
    • RAM: 2x8 DDR4-3600mhz
    • PSU: be quiet! System Power 9 CM - 400 Watt
    • Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500 Midi-Tower
    • Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500gb
    • Monitor: Acer KG241Q 144hz

(Let me know if anything important is missing)

As you can probably tell, the GPU is the odd one out. Everything I listed, I bought new except the GPU that I took from my old build (an AMD fx-6350 based build. Yeah, you get the idea!)

Anyway, the problem lies within the PSU. I'm alright when it comes to PC stuff, but I never really got into proper wattage calculations and/or efficiency. I tried looking for sites and tools to calculate my wattage and simulated it with an RTX3050 in comparison, but I get incredibly fluctuating results that would make it a complete coinflip and I'm not ready for such an expensive coinflip, lemme tell you.

Call me naive, but my plan is to get a new GPU without having to change my PSU, is basicly what I'm saying. The problem is, I don't have any idea how much workload my PSU is under and how much it has to spare with my current build and if there would be enough juice to spare.

All I'm doing on my PC is playing games, watching netflix and the usual internet shenanigans. I don't stream or edit videos or anything like that.

If there is anybody out there with some suggestions and/or knowledge to spare, I would be eternally grateful. To clarify, I'm not deadset on the GPU mentioned above. It's rather the price range I'm set on, which is roughly 300-350€. I obviously want the best price/efficiency solution possible that would still be a very significant and hopefully lasting replacement for my GPU without having to change my PSU.

Be frank with me and tell me if my plan is completely nuts or stupid. But, please let me know if there is something I can do with my price range and PSU to have something I can (perhaps) proudly look at in the future!

Thank you so much in advance for bothering with me, guys! :)
