    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Which is ultimately a better GPU better given the circumstances?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 08:33 PM PDT

I am trying to decide between two GPU's:

RTX 3060 VS RTX 3060 Ti

I would be mostly playing Fortnite and from what I am reading Fortnite is primarily a CPU run game, given that even with the current prices of GPU's the RTX 3060 isn't a ton cheaper than the 3060 Ti. Is it worth spending $50 to $100 more to get a Ti, or even is it worth is in the sense that they are not as important for the game (From what I am reading)?

I recently installed a CPU cooler and now I smell a faint burned plastic smell

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:42 AM PDT

I build my PC three weeks ago, all new parts. There was an issue with the CPU cooler so I installed the Intel stock cooler that came with the CPU for the time being. Last weekend I swapped the stock cooler with the CPU cooler (ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports DUO) and I'm noticing a faint burned plastic smell that wasn't there the week prior.

I checked my CPU temperature while a game was running and all 6 cores were sitting around 30 degrees celsius (86F). I don't understand what could be causing the smell other than the CPU or the CPU cooler since I didn't have this issue before. Anybody has some ideas?

Nvidia claimed that the second half of 2022 will see improved GPU supply, is this still the case?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:09 AM PDT

Nvidia said this either last year or earlier this year, but I remembered it as it was something to look forward to. Does anyone have any doubts of this, or any insights to share about what you think may actually happen?

Refreshing my 2018 build, wondering if the 8700k is still fine to pair with a 3070 ti for 1440p (60-144fps) gaming, or if I should just build a new rig.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 10:19 PM PDT

    Current build from 2018:

Case: Fractal Define S Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z370 CPU: i7 8700k Cooler: Noctua D15s RAM: 2x8gb 2666mhz RAM GPU: EVGA 1070 ti Monitor: 1440p/144hz + 1080p/120hz PSU: 10 year old Seasonic 650w

Upgrading the GPU for obvious reasons (1070 ti isn't the best for 1440p at nice settings), but also wanted to grab an adequate PSU since mine is quite old and below recommended wattage for the GPU I'm getting. Ended up with a new case and an AIO cooler in my cart for an aesthetic refresh on an aging rig.

    The "refreshed" build would be:

Case: Corsair 4000d case Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z370 CPU: i7 8700k Cooler: EVGA CLC 280mm AIO RAM: 2x8gb 2666mhz RAM GPU: EVGA 3070 ti FTW3 Monitor: 1440p/144hz + 1080p/120hz PSU: Corsair RM750X PSU

I know the 8700k and 2666mhz RAM will be a slight bottleneck after looking at some benchmarks, but small enough compared to 12th Gen i5 + faster RAM that I'm not sure I can justify an entire new build. I'm not even looking for 144fps at all times. For some games I have to drop down to 1080p just to maintain 60fps (looking at you Elden Ring!).

So, does this seem stupid? Or do y'all think I can get a good couple more years out of the 8700k?

Im wondering if any of yall have a good suggestion for a "gaming pc starter kit" as I know next to nothing and dont wanna buy a bunch of stuff, figure out I cant use any of it and waste money, so im hoping you all could link some cheap (around the 500 dollar range) PC's, moniter, table, keyboard and mouse stuff, and even better if its pre built as I know next to nothing. I dont want to or plan to be a pro or push the pc to its limits, I just wanna play some pc exclusive games or games better suited for the pc

Help me pls, is this a decent build??

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 02:14 AM PDT

Hello hello, I am in need of some advice. I'm a complete noob when it comes to PC gaming, I only just started getting back into gaming on my PS4 before it finally decided to die on me the other day. I'd been thinking about getting a PC for ages, but coming from console gaming makes it seem super intimidating. I'm pretty good with general PC hardware but gaming hardware is over my head. I'm planning on using umart's PC build service where you just add all the hardware parts to the cart and then they build it for you. These are all the parts I currently have in my cart (minus the wifi adaptor etc)-

AZZA Apollo 430 ARGB Tempered Glass ATX Case - White

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 Core AM4 3.6GHz CPU with Wraith Stealth Cooler

    Corsair 16GB (2x8GB)CMW16GX4M2C3200C16W DDR4 3200MHz Vengeance Pro RGB

    Seagate 480GB Barracuda Q1 2.5in SATA SSD

Asus Phoenix GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Graphics Card

    Inwin 550W A55 80+ ATX Power Supply

Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED Turbo ARGB CPU Cooler

    Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 AM4 ATX Motherboard

All up the cost is $1300 AUD, which is way more than I feel like I should be spending considering I have ADHD and will probably lose interest in gaming again in 6 months time, but alas, thats a future problem.

Anyway, my question is, is this a decent build and will the parts all work together? I'm only just getting back into gaming, so I don't need the latest and greatest (but I did add RGB because its gotta look good if I'm spending money on it lol). Basically at this stage I just want to keep playing destiny 2, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (can you tell I haven't gamed in a few years, I'm quite behind on all my favourite games hahaha), so all I need to know is if I'll be able to run those games on it, plus maybe some newer games.

    1080p 60fps GPU/CPU

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 11:44 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am looking into building a basic gaming PC for my nephew. He's only 6, and would have no idea it's coming.

I know he enjoys Fortnite, and I think it's safe to say he would enjoy Minecraft as well.

Given his age, I'm not looking to dump a TON of money into this. 60 fps will look smooth as butter to him. I'm also not on any immediate timeframe, and plan to hunt down some deals on used parts.

My question, per the title of the post, is what CPU/GPU would be the best value and give no stutters at 1080p 60hz?

    Thanks in advance!

    Replacing USB on Front Panel

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 11:32 PM PDT

    Greetings guys,

I recently got a Thermaltake Level 20 VT paired with a Mortar B550m motherboard which has a USB C port and I would like to replace one of the USB 2.0 ports with a USB C. However, those USB 2.0 are soldered to the PCB board where the Power/Reset and audio connections are.

My question is the following, is it possible to remove one of the USB 2.0 connections without damaging the PCB board?

Looking for a second opinion on $3500 build

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:24 AM PDT

PC Building noob here. I have a PC that was built 9 years ago at a $700 budget. While dealing with its slowness recently, I decided I'm not putting up with this anymore and upgrading (I know, terrible timing). I shamefully purchased a 3080 Ti on a whim so trying to bring my build together soon.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly for gaming new AAA titles with the top settings. Planning to get a VR headset in the near future so being able to run that without issue is a priority. Aside from that, just general computer browsing. I have interest in 3D animating/rendering as well so hopefully this can handle that.

I also have gotten into light data-hoarding (mostly music/video), so fast storage is important to me.

I'm not much good with PC building so I would like some of the components to last a while; but I do realize these things get outdated pretty quickly. 5 years before upgrades would be nice. Would like to focus more of the budget on parts that last longer and maintain "upgrade-ability".

I've never OC'd before so it's not a primary concern, although I'm guessing being able to OC will be more "future-proof".

I'm a "function over form" guy so I don't care about aesthetics. I dislike RGB.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Will be starting off with 1440p, >144hz monitor but might upgrade to a 4k screen later. I would like to get close to max settings in games but framerate comes first. I'd also like to do some VR gaming on this build so would like to be able to run VR with minimal stutter for immersion.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $3500

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Thought process of my build:

Monitor: The more I look at monitors, the more confused I get... Would want something 27" 1440p >144hz with G-sync. Don't mind spending a premium on something that will last. Don't think I like curved screens or ultrawide. The S2721DGF seemed to be highly regarded in this sub so I chose it, but it seems like the MAG274QRF-QD is at a similar price point ATM and is slightly better? I'm planning on putting it on a mount and perhaps getting another one when it goes on sale. I'm might also be interested in getting a LG C1 48" later down the line to mount behind my desk for some HDR gaming (unless something better than OLED burn-in comes along by then).

Mobo: Don't mind spending a bit more on this for a good one. Would like to keep my upgrade paths open with my mobo choice; primarily more SSD/HDD storage (although it looks like 2.5" SATA SSDs are about the same price as m.2 NVMe SSDs these days? In that case, prioritize m.2 slots over SATA). Having a good number of fast USB ports is also important. Don't care about WiFi, but do want good Bluetooth, which seems like they are bundled together. Initially chose the Asus ROG STRIX Z690-A but it seemed like I didn't need all of those features; although my current choice lacks a USB-C gen 2x2. Is that important? Do I need it for VR?

Case: No full towers. Don't mind spending extra for a case that will last. I would prefer a case with multiple USB ports in the front but it seems like most cases these days only have 2-3. Due to the GPU heat concern, I wanted a case with good airflow. But in addition, I wanted to choose a case that had side fan intakes as well in case I decided to install an AIO cooler for both CPU and GPU in the future. PcPartPicker has a warning for the USB headers but to my understanding, my mobo and case should match up? (2x gen1 A port, 1x gen2 C port = 1x gen1 A header, 1x gen2 C header)

Storage: Expecting the most critique for this. I want to try dual-booting Linux/Windows and running each OS on a separate 1TB drive. The 2TB one will be shared storage. Chose 1TB for each OS since I wasn't sure if you could run programs off of the shared drive, or if it would be as fast being ran from a shared drive. Considering the 980 Pro for the OS drives if it will make any meaningful performance difference. Wanting to set up a NAS for file storage in the future but I probably can't set that up in time before I need more storage space on this build.

CPU: I would like one that wouldn't bottleneck my GPU, but I doubt I'll be anywhere close to that with a 3080ti. At the same time though, I don't mind spending a little more on the CPU since the GPU is easier to upgrade than the CPU. I considered the 12900K but it seemed like seriously diminishing returns. I haven't considered AMD.

Power Supply: Don't mind spending extra for one that will be reliable and will last. Want some power clearance for future upgrades/additions. I just chose a Gold cert 850W one at the top of the list.

CPU Cooler: Another reason I went with 12700K over 12900K was ease of air cooling. I don't think I want to mess around with AIO with my skill-level. The NH-D15 seemed to be the best air cooler. It seems like I will need a different mounting adapter from Noctua to fit my mobo though.

Memory: Not much thought here. Wanted 3600 CL16. 2x16GB so I can add 2 more to reach 64GB when necessary.

GPU: I already purchased this from EVGA for $1330 a week ago. I've read that the cooling on this particular model isn't very good, so I think I will be undervolting it if I can manage. My plan is to test it out with my use-case, and if it's overheating, try some other cooling method/improvement (replace thermal pad, AIO).

Thank you so much for looking at my build!!!

Is there like a cheatsheet one can refer to while trying to figuring the right specs for a PC build?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2022 01:01 AM PDT

I will be building a PC soon (or have it built - not sure).

This will be my first PC and I'd like to get this right the first time (quite optimistic - I know).

It will serve a bunch of different purposes:

    1. Some gaming (e.g. Minecraft/GTA)
    2. Some video editing possibly for YouTube
    3. Recording video tutorials
    4. Doing some Machine Learning/Deep Learning
    5. Some coding/dev stuff

None of this will be done an extreme but the PC will be used for all or some of the things I've mentioned above.

As I have mentioned, I was wondering if these are some resources available that can help me figure out the best specs for my needs.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
