After 10 years, back on Windows gaming rig. Antivirus, tools & tips?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2022 03:34 AM PDT

Hello dear people of this subreddit.

After a long time, I am back. I'm sure I won't need foobar2000, but 7zip is still the way to go. The actual question is about Antivirus - do I need some? Is windows defender enough?

Otherwise, since I'm not in the loop - what else do you recommend for the initial setup?

    Thanks y'all!

Just purchased a Windows Server 2022 CD. What does the line starting with 'ESD' mean?

So my laptop forced windows 11 on me and I am not happy, can I get 10 back?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 04:13 PM PDT

I opened up laptop today and it had seemingly upgraded to windows 11 overnight, I thought it was no large problem but I have been using my computer for a few hours now and I am starting to go insane!!

The sleek look is actually ugly , extremely light and tiny text (now I am in my mid twenties and my sight is not too bad at a close range but I am annoyed by how small everything looks my mother will not be able to see anything at all if she borrows my computer)

Why did they feel they should center the freaking taskbar?!! It is such a huge waste of space and feels so clumsy and in your face to have the start icon appear in the center like a huge grey box to cover your screen. I dare you to tell me it is not a waste of space to have the taskbar centered, if they had put it to the left they would have enough space to put the percentage of the battery icon, what use do I have for the stupid battery icon if it does not show the percentage?!! Yes you can hover on it for it appear in tiny tiny text but was not the thing about windows 11 that it would be more efficient well an extra click or hover is not efficient to me.

Another thing that need an extra click is to see all programs in the start menu, dear windows 10 had those initially on the go.

Another extra click that is necessary is the viewing of the context menus , I don't see the use for the condensed menus I want full on menus without having to click on the more options. Does microsoft think us to be the same stupid people that buys apple products for them being easy to use and user friendly which I see as a fancy way to say limited use and design and development restricted? Windows users want the full on menus and all the options to customize.

So it is easy to say I am mad about windows 11, really annoyed by the UI , the design but mostly the functionality.

I want to go back to windows 10 this stupid upgrade was forced on me I did not choose it , but I can't seem set it back either because that option in the settings is grayed out. If I did not spend so much money on my laptop and it being the most expensive thing I bought as a student then I would go to apple out of spite. Am I overreacting , I hope windows 11 will become better but so far the faults I have found are so annoying and important for ease of use.

Gents this is extremely intrusive. Literally restart my PC and boom. GET WINDOWS 11. Have to press twice decline and skip in order to go back to my PC screen. Imagine you're old or simply not tech savvy. OMG what happened ?!?!? Like f***** scavengers.

Thumbnails not showing only on video files. Images are fine.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 05:59 PM PDT

So doest matter what type of video, mp4, mov, avi, any video doesn't have a thumbnail, just a symbol of the app that plays videos on windows. All pictures have thumbnails normally. I have tried all the tips online, nothing works. Has anyone ever encountered something similar?

Force W10 to use AAC instead of SBC?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 02:58 PM PDT

Force W10 to use AAC instead of SBC?

My pair of Freebuds 3i definitely does support AAC, it works perfectly on my Android phone and on Linux, yet Windows for some reason decides to force SBC, as shown on the screenshot. Is there any way I can override the codec choice, using the registry, perhaps?

Windows Powershell keeps opening every 10 minutes.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 09:34 PM PDT

So, windows Powershell opens up for less than a second then closes all by itself consistently every 10 minutes. This issue has been going on for a while, first starting with it opening every hour, then every 20 minutes, then now, every 10 minutes. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I have tried other ways to "fix" it like disabling it on start up and restarting my computer. It's starting to get annoying as it goes to the top priority for a second when it opens and makes tasks longer than 20-30 minutes very tedious. Is this just something I can fix or a virus?

Is it possible to remote into a single laptop screen from a laptop that has multiple monitors?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 02:10 PM PDT

I don't know if there is any software that exists or if it's just impossible. Say I have my work laptop and I want to remote into it from my personal laptop. My personal laptop is connected to 2 monitors (3 screens total) while my laptop is standalone. Does all remote software just emulate the screen and therefore I can't remote from multiple screens to one?

Moving to new PC with old Win8 Pro OEM license?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 11:26 AM PDT

I'm very confused because of contradicting information on the internet... So please help.

So, a couple of years ago I bought laptop and Win8 Pro OEM for it - upgraded it to 10 later - that's where I am now.

I want to buy a new laptop - and I am confused if I will be able to buy laptop with Win10home and upgrade it with my old license from home to Pro

From what I've gathered I should be able to "move" the license - as in "use it on any one pc" - but I am not sure - will I?

And anther question to which I can't find answer to - "how? - how do I do it? I don't see" disable license" or something in license settings

Do compressed directories keep compressing files as you add them?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 05:15 PM PDT

I'm guessing yes. I just wanna check. Such a stupid question I know. 😆 Anyway, what I am specifically referring to is the "Compress this drive to save disk space" checkbox under the general tab of the properties window for a given system volume. It wants to run the compression on everything as soon as I check it. Most of the stuff on the drive is compressed already, I am just checking it because of an uncompressed mirror that I'm syncing and since I have a really powerful CPU and I hardly access the drive (it's an archive) then I figure any more help I can get with compression couldn't hurt. But now I'm wondering if it applies overtime since it wants to run right away.

Googling for this is not giving me very comprehensive results so I figured I'd just post as a question.

can I downgrade to windows 10 home if my pro is working not activated?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 07:54 AM PDT

I purchased a pc a while ago and it came with windows 10 pro on it for a bit and then the free version stopped. I don't need windows 10 pro so I don't need to pay the extra 40 bucks but I've heard that u can't technically downgrade from pro to home but is it really downgrading if pro isn't activated?

Why is my "users" file acting weird

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 12:48 PM PDT

So my "users" file on C: takes up 93 gb while the files within it only take up 56 gb all together, so where are the other 37 gb? I don't get it.

Virutal Deksopts in Windows 11, better but could be better

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 12:20 PM PDT

Hi everybody, am I the only one who wishes for better Virtual Desktops?
I am seriously surprised on how little they improved this feature from Windows 10 to 11, it's surely more accessible and changing wallpaper/name is cool, but the little change of the taskbar/desktop icons would have been the best feature of Windows11!
What do you think? Did you ever feel like having multiple environments? Switching user isn't that much practical imo

Please hear me out. I'm sorry if you think I am not right, just tell at me if you want. But give valid reasons then.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 07:23 PM PDT

Ok that's it, I'm done with these people. Hear me out.

People seem to HATE windows because of very trivial reasons. A specific popup comes up that one time. It never comes again. A few links to install weird games. Ok that's fair enough, I cannot advocate for that. Microsoft Edge. It is a great browser, better than Chrome and Firefox!

People also make up reasons to hate windows, or look at a silly thing and make it the next biggest reason why we should all switch to damned Linux which isn't any better with this stuff. Windows update for example. When it asks, and you update, it won't ask again for at least 3 weeks. The reason people have these issues is because they aren't updating for months at a time.

People also seem to HATE anything to do with the fact that we need to use a Microsoft account. It is actually so enriching! You probably had a Hotmail email at some point, that is a valid Microsoft account, enough that you can make a @hotmail.com address now if you want.

People RIDICULE anything to do with change. It seems to be the problem. Microsoft is constantly trying to innovate, and users push it down the drain as fast as possible. And then Microsoft can't make it better for you. What if that new feature you wanted and submitted through feedback actually got implemented but you didn't want to update? Do you see all the benefits of Edge? Instead of needing to make do with the fact that all your bookmarks aren't sorted (there are folders, but not very intuitive to save to,) you can use Collections. Named groups of specific sites and the current page can be added very easily. But no! I am sticking to chrome! I want everything to be how it is. For example: Google moves new tabs to the right (just an example, not real.) No problem, it's all 👍. Microsoft moves the start button by 2 pixels. People LOSE THEIR MINDS. THIS ISN'T OK. Be flexible.

Now I know I may seem like a Windows Fanboy, but I see all the hate surrounded by Microsoft and know they don't deserve it. Without Windows, the computer world would be very different, compared to how it is now. It wouldn't necessarily be better, either.

So grow up. Please just TRY what Microsoft tells you to. It is worth it.

    windows 8.1 vs 10 on a tablet

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 01:35 AM PDT

(This is more of a rant of windows 10)

We all know that windows 8.1 was bad, but on tablets windows 10 is garbage, I have a toshiba wt8-b and upgraded to windows 10. Awesome, I thought... But then I realized it is inconsistent (when sliding from right to left, the action bar opens but it just open all the way even if I bearly swipe, there is a maximaze/restore button on apps like explore that does nothing) and apps are shit slow compared to windows 8.1

Has anyone heard of MSDN Windows licence keys?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2022 05:41 AM PDT

I posted on here a couple of days ago regarding my Windows 10 product key and whether it's genuine or not.

I am now thinking that the key I used is an MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) key. It would make sense, since MSDN keys are detected by Windows as being retail keys, they are multi-activation, and they also activate 'permanently' according to slmgr /xpr and PID checking software also reports the keys as being RETAIL_CHANNEL. So if the key is indeed an MSDN key - do I need to worry about it?

I am very surprised that not many people know about MSDN keys.

    Thanks guys.
