Can I create a network not connected to the internet that uses public IP addresses?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 04:33 AM PDT

I know it sounds silly, after all that's what private addresses are for, but is it possible? Would that mean it's possible to have two disconnected Internets?

    Cat7 Troubles with 10Gb

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:37 AM PDT

I ran some Cat7 for a customer and ran into some trouble. It's annoying for sure but I've never had problems with it in the past.

It's two lines point A to B and a little over 350ft. The lines run through an attic, into a basement and then in conduit underground to another building. I terminated both lines, tested them and all was well however due to the distance, I was only getting 5Gb it seemed.

I cut the lines at around 150ft and added a 10Gb switch in their basement and I still was not getting a 10Gb connection. I used Monoprice Cat7 keystones and was extremely carefully to terminate correctly. I even re terminated everything a second time with no luck.

I was out of ideas so I just used Cat6 keystones and everything worked immediately for a 10Gb connection.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I have all Cat7 Ethernet and patch cables. I was thinking the Cat7 jacks could somehow have been faulty as only two of the eight I installed worked. I do find it hard to believe 6 were defective.

I do audio/visual/data for a living and have never run into this exact scenario/problem.

Could I really have been immediately terminating it wrong? Or is it possible the keystones were the issue?

    Thanks!

    Permanent Double NAT?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:31 AM PDT

I have a home network with a gateway and two routers. One router (RT-AC68P) is just set in repeater mode so it's a glorified wireless range extender. The other router (NetDuma R2) is connected to the gateway (TC8717T) via Ethernet. However, that leaves me with a Double NAT. Of course I think to put the gateway into Bridge Mode so that I won't have a Double NAT. When I do this it naturally shuts off the wireless signal from it. But the router connected via Ethernet can no longer reach the internet. While router which is a wireless repeater continues to reach the internet completely unhindered.

I've tried everything, updated firmware, factory reset, toggled all the DHCP settings, uPnP, etc and I'm at a loss. I can either have a Double NAT with obvious connection issues, or a gateway in Bridge Mode that doesn't let the wired router reach the internet. Am I missing something? All input is welcome, please. I feel as though I must be misunderstanding something simple.

    router as wireless access point

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:26 AM PDT

i wanna extend my home router wifi strength

i want to get net even in my bedroom

i want to be as cheap as possible. i have read in this sub reddit that a wireless access point can solve problem. after googling prices i found to be a bit higher than my budget. then i saw that few routers have the feature of access point in built them. i dont care much about speed as i am just watch youtube and surf google in bedroom.

so is the extra router with wireless accesspoint a cheaper option for me instead of dedicated wireless aceess point

Problem with connecting the second router as WAP

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:10 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have HUAWEI 4GRouter 3 Pro and I want to set it up as a second wireless access point. I don't know much about networking and I've already read a couple of beginner networking guides but nothing helps. I disabled DHCP setting on the secondary router and set its IP address inside of the subnet mask of the primary one. It constantly showed that it has no access to the internet. The only way I could connect it is by plugging the cable into the WAN port of the sec. router and setting it to Static IP setting with the gateway IP being the primary router IP, but then, connected devices couldn't obtain an IP address.

I also configured SSID and other WIFI settings to match the primary one.

I'm wondering if I made any possible mistakes or how would you guys do it. I couldn't find any helpful information online.

    Thanks in advance.

Longer coax vs long ethernet cable for a 1 gigabit connection?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 04:42 AM PDT

    Greetings all,

We'll be moving to a new place and we'll have 1GBit cable internet. The internet coaxial out is in a very awkward place so I'll need to either:

    1. Get a 6-8 meter coaxial cable that I'll route to the modem OR
    2. Short coaxial cable to the modem which remains at the awkward place (very undesirable) and then 6-8m of ethernet cable that hooks up to the router

So essentially what I'm asking is: Is a longer coaxial cable going to result in a significant speed drop? If I go for coax cable, what should I look for in terms of shielding, quality, brand, etc?

    Thank you in advance!

    Considering Ethernet Over Coax

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:29 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I am having issues getting good coverage of my house, the house has RG6 cables going through it and the walls are concrete. I tried pretty much every wifi based solution to solve the issue but the signal gets through 1 wall and drops in speed drastically.

I have fiber optic internet which gives me about 200mbs up and down. But i barely get 10mbs in some rooms with my current mesh network.

So i was looking into Moca 2.5 Adapters and they are pricey but i am willing to pay if it's gonna get me a reliable connection with good speeds in the further rooms of the house.

Any advice regarding Moca 2.5? And what brand i get?

    Networking in a small office

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:23 AM PDT

    Good morning,

I work on an IT department in a small to medium Business in the UK. We have an issue and I was wondering if I could get any advice.

We have a small office that currently doesn't have any data ports in and the nearest one is on the other side of the wall. Without drilling is it possible to get network into that room without it being on wifi?

We would also need to have access to an IP phone as well in the small office.

    Many thanks

If I get a 1800AX (1201Mbps on 5ghz) AP and my Protectli box has a 1000Mbps port. Will the AP be the bottleneck?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:09 AM PDT

This is obviously assuming ideal conditions. If my Protectli Pfesense box has a 1000Mbps port and my AP is 1800AX, so 1201Mbps on 5ghz, will I have any benefit from an AX AP? Should I just get an 802.11AC AP?

Comcast called me 2 days before my plan expired to sell an overpriced internet

    Posted: 29 Mar 2022 02:18 PM PDT

Comcast called me today to offer a 70$ dollars for 300 MPs, currently, I have 100mps for 30$, I said let me think about it, I am planning to cancel and enroll another family member for a better deal,

I saw that Comcast offered 70$ for 1.2gps and I started to research an alternative modem router

My first option was an all in one:

    • ARRIS Surfboard G36 Multi-Gigabit Cable Modem & AX3000 Wi-Fi Router with a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet Port $329.00

And my second option was to buy both:

    • ARRIS Surfboard G36 Multi-Gigabit Cable Modem & AX3000 Wi-Fi Router with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet Port $149.99
    • Motorola MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gig Cable Modem $129.99

Currently, I have an all in one:

    • NETGEAR N600 (8x4) WiFi DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem Router (C3700)

Are there better alternatives? more cost-efficient please let me know mainly used for gaming streaming, thanks in advance

    RF modulator basic question

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 01:35 AM PDT

    Hello!

we have an antenna on the roof, and a splitter in the home so that all rooms are getting the antenna signal.

Now if i use an RF modulator on an HDMI device, and i connect the coaxial to the antenna cable already installed, will the other room get both: antenna signal on the roof and the hdmi device?

As you understand, i have no idea how RF modulators work!

    Thanks!

Please recommend me a new modem

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 12:57 AM PDT

So I have a NexusLink 3112u that was supplied by our internet provider. The issue is, is that they refuse to give us the password to login into it. I can't even change the password for the thing. Recently we have been having trouble with the WiFi. Anything plugged in via Ethernet is perfectly fine, but the Wifi itself is super slow. I'd love to try and fix it, but I can't. I'd have to have them come out and mess with it themselves. So any recommendations for a DSL modem/router?

What spec to look at to determine if one router has a longer range than the other?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 12:53 AM PDT

Assuming they're all Wifi6, is there like a specific spec to look at? Just a sample, is AX5400 have longer range than AX6000 or that number refers to just their speed?

Ethernet ports installed by electrician but not working

    Posted: 30 Mar 2022 12:52 AM PDT

So I had an electrician install Ethernet ports in a few different rooms of my house. I was expecting to be able to plug a standard Ethernet cable from a router into the port in one room then from the port in a separate room connect a cable to my laptop and be connected to the router.

However this doesn't work. Has the install been done wrong or have I misunderstood how the ports should be used?

Each wall port has a little 5e logo on it + a standard Ethernet cable fits snugly into them.

Help choosing custom firmware for Linksys router

    Posted: 29 Mar 2022 06:42 PM PDT

Hi, I am researching for the best option to reflash a Linksys EA6400 that I use in bridge mode just for having wifi and some wired LAN ports in my workspace at home. My main router is a Mikrotik RB760igs so no need for a second router in my small network. The original Linksys firmware is basically useless and I would like some basic managed switch functionality like temperature monitoring, enabling/disabling ports, vlans and using the radios as wifi extender in the rare case I need it. If I can do vlan tagging in the wireless that would be awesome to add and if I can use a printer through the usb port in bridge mode that's even better but not limiting to firmware selection as I can keep using the printer through my pc.

I have read a lot about the Tomato flavors and DD-WRT but I won't be using all the features in any way. DD-WRT looks like the most advanced for routing and Tomato looks more user friendly (and prettier) but I don't need the superadvanced features and also tomato seems easier to flash in my router model. I can't find much information for my use case and I really apreciate any insight you gals and guys can point out, I just want to know if I'm asking a reasonable use case. Thanks in advance.

Can a bad router cause packet loss?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2022 07:36 PM PDT

I've been experiencing 5-10% of packet loss for the last few months. Got my isp to check into it, he changed the header on the ethernet cable and said if this doesn't solve it then it's probably your router. So should I buy a new router?

    What Router Should I Choose??

    Posted: 29 Mar 2022 10:29 PM PDT

Hi, I currently have gigabit service (1,200mbps) with Xfinity and I use my own modem (Netgear CM1200) and router. I'm trying to figure out which router is best for my budget ($250) I have been using the Netgear Nighthawk RAX78 (AX6200) purchased at Costco. Using 2 CAT7 cables with WAN Link Aggregation I was about to get speeds around 1040mps from the modem to the router and roughly 800-830mbps on a wifi Speedtest with my iPhone 11.

I recently saw that Costco had a deal at the same price on the TP-Link Archer AX11000 so I thought I'd try it out and return one of the 2. Turns out the TP-Link does not have WAN Link Aggregation and the fastest speed I can get from the modem to the router is about 745mbps using 1 CAT7 cord. And the top speedtest I've gotten on my iPhone 11 is 700 with most averaging 630-660mbps.

I don't do any gaming, just mostly streaming 4K movies and shows and my wife works from home via video chats all day. Every device we have is connected via wifi.. Which router should I stick with? The TP-Link seems to have further signal and I like that it has 2 channels that can support over 4gb each, but as far as top single test speeds go, the Nighthawk RAX78 wins due to the WAN Link Aggregation.

What do y'all think I should do? I cannot return the CM1200, but I can return either (or both) routers.
