What are the most common software problems that you could walk a tech literate user through to fix? Posted: 29 Mar 2022 07:43 AM PDT I'm thinking of what common issues you could fix with a simple commandline entry, clicking through some simple menus, or basic hardware troubleshooting. What comes to my head right off the bat, solving boot issues, troubleshooting a network, veryfing if components are powering on. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone know why laptops sometimes need a battery pull? Posted: 29 Mar 2022 08:01 AM PDT We have all run into the quick fix of a non booting laptop that just needs the battery disconnected. Used to be easier with the removable batteries, but now we have to open them up unless they have the battery reset button (which seems fewer do these days). I am just trying to get a better explanation as to why this occurs and if there is even any kind of actual fix for it. I have a few clients where we have done this multiple times on the same laptop. It is never right away, sometimes months in between, but still ends up being a frequent issue. Others we have done once and never heard again that it was an issue. I will assume there is some build up of charge in capacitors on the board and the machine won't power on until the power has been drained which disconnecting the battery and in some cases holding power to flush any residual charge off the board. Is it due to not failed, but caps that are not working as they should? Is it something a board replacement would generally resolve? My clients are often looking for a better explanation than one I can currently provide so I am just wondering if anyone has any further insight on this. We don't do component level repairs (other than some of the most basic like DC jacks) and even if we did, I would imagine tracking something like this down would be exceedingly difficult.
