What is up with germany? Networking

    What is up with germany?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:17 AM PST

Does anyone know a IP transit uplink that doesn't suck towards Germany and for which you won't have to pay an arm and a leg per megabyte?

Some of our customers have high requirements towards Germany and we are at our wits end.

We have tried 5 different tier 1 transits and each one of them was problematic. Either troughput or latency. Telia worked fine for a couple of weeks but then complaints started there too.

For those uninitiated, Deutsche Telekom is the mother company of all T-Mobile, T-com, T-XXX ISPs worldwide. And Germany is their home turf. Is their racquet there so strong that nobody else can get a good IPT service there?

We have tried asking Deutsche Telekom for peering, but their prices were just absurd.

On top of that we are in an ex-Yugoslavian country, so we aren't even geographically far from Germany,

    ADVA FSP150 GE114 Access

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 11:55 AM PST

Hello everyone. I got an Adva ge114 off of eBay for 17 bucks, only problem is I can't get into the dang thing. I can access the gui with the default address of 192.168.0.2, but can't get in with the default passwords. The RS-232 port shows me nothing when plugged in. That is basically a console port is it not? I'm trying to get some experience with these devices as we use them at work for customer access to the internet.

    Employee access on Guest WLAN

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 01:29 AM PST

I am setting up Guest Access WLAN using Cisco ISE. Guest will use sponsored guest portal where they would receive username and password via SMS provider

    My question:

If I need to allow the same WLAN to connect Guest WLAN using AD credentials and gain internet access only. Is this approach security perspective? Any downsides that I may be missing. As a network wise, Guest VLAN is isolated and L2 all the way to the firewall.

Should I get a better paying job

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 10:45 PM PST

I am a network engineer who wears lots of hats. I do mostly work on the architecture team but also some implementation. I am an SME for SDWAN on my team. I am the guy who works the most with our PMO to coordinate network projects. Where I work, we have great technology stack and new projects like ACI, velocloud, zscaler, data center consolidation, cloud, automation, nsx etc. These are some of the skills I want to add to my resume

I feel burnt out due to the many projects and tasks that I have on my plate. My seniors are promising new hires soon but well, it's a promise for now. I feel like giving up, but the urge of learning new things is the one keeping me around. The pay is meh. I could easily get $160k somewhere else but my worry is that I may not be exposed to the technology that I have infront of me now. I want more money but my company can't go over the occasional two percent increment.

What would you do if you were in my shoes.

Need job interview prep help (advanced)

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 12:14 PM PST

Hello, I have a job interview coming up for an ISP startup being run by a CEO with a very strong history of successful start ups. They are looking for a network engineer to join the team VERY early on. Ive been a network engineer for almost 15 years now and am a Senior/Lead network engineer for the past several years with a lot of experience in a broad range of industries, except ISP work. I have worked as a customer with a lot of ISPs, but never for an ISP. Id really like to ace this interview but I could use some help on topics/technology that I should brush up in advance. Im not looking for answers like review BGP or MPLS etc, obviously I am going to be doing that but what I want to know is there any specific aspects of BGP that I should be more familiar with like BGP Communities? Also what other technology outside of common network technology should I ensure I am aware of?

Interview questions - what do you ask

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 05:41 AM PST

You have to interview candidates for a position that requires extensive routing expertise (mostly OSPF and BGP, no MPLS) and will mostly have to do migrations from traditional network setups to ACI.

What do you ask to see if the candidates actually have experience or just book knowledge?

Best routers to cut through high congestion WiFi environments?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 04:28 PM PST

Hello everyone! I'm currently developing a digital activation for a music festival. When we near peak attendance at this festival (100K+) wireless signals go haywire. Nearly all of the WiFi networks and cell services go down. I have several devices that need to talk with each other over WiFi, if they lose connection, the activation goes down. They'll be located indoors between 5ft and 40ft from the router or AP. I was wondering if there were particular wireless standards or strategies that I could implement to fight this severe congestion? More specifically I'm hoping for recommendations for a router or AP that'll shine in this environment?

    Keystone jack standard(s)?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 01:05 AM PST

Is there an official standard that defines keystone jack and chassis/plate dimensions? Looking for something official to reference for the parameters of a custom sized 3D printed keystone patch panel.

I know I can just measure one and/or look at various dimensions from manufacturers online... I'm specifically looking for any official standards.

    Voice vlan tagging - help

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 05:13 AM PST

Hey guys, I need some help to understand the VOIP system deployed in my customer's infrastructure.

I am aware that voice vlan "tags" frames and help phones get their config from a CDP or LLDP enabled interfaces but I have came across of several TRUNKS (non-access ports) with it configured. Once removed, the phones stop registering! Any ideas why this may occur? (As the phone brand I am using Vtech and for switching Cisco).
