How many windows server licenses do I need for 2 servers and 300 users?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 08:15 AM PST

This is for homework. I have 300 users that need to access an application on a server. I need 2 servers (1 is for redundancy). CALs are confusing me. How many licenses do I need in total? Im supposed fo provide an $ estimate to create a budget.

Program to locate duplicate media files on multiple hard drives for Windows 10

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:33 PM PST

I have a few drives with duplicate media and wondering if there is a program that can detect these and allow me to delete them off the drives I don't want them without having to fish through each drive manually.

Any good ideas for something like autorun for one's own VHDs/ISOs/stuff like that...

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 01:55 PM PST

I've been setting up a new laptop that I can game on, and given that I have a limited amount of local storage on it, I've started on this idea where I install my games to VHDs and then only keep the most recent and most active ones locally on the laptop. The older ones I keep on my fileserver, and when I want to play a game from there, I simply mount the VHD via Samba and fire up the game. No copying over needed.

With LZX compression in NTFS, it's also pretty awesome as the VHDs take up very little space - usually less than the installer. Really easy to back up to Backblaze, too. And emulation ROMs and stuff like that are perfect for it as well.

So, yeah, t's pretty nifty, and I've been hacking away with little bits here and there to make the overall experience more pleasing and easy. I was thinking about a way to make it super-easy to launch a game, and I remembered back in the day when autorun wasn't yet recognized as the massive security hole that it really is.

For this specific scenario, it would be fantastic if I could simply have a batch file on the VHD run automatically like autorun used to do, so that I would just mount a VHD, and boom - the game would launch automatically.

Unfortunately, that's not possible. Or is it? Or is there something like it that I could set up? Like, can I attach an event handler to some sort of "disk mounted" or "VHD attached" event that Windows generates?

Any ideas? Any of you every done something like this?

I like weather being down there, but if I want more information I have to deal with the worthless news stories. Are there any weather toolbars or programs that can live on the taskbar that are just weather?

When URIs invoke UWP software, what commandment is ultimately provided?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 03:04 PM PST

If I invoke 'Windows.ImmersiveControlPanel' via 'ms-settings:themes', is the consequent command similar to 'Windows.ImmersiveControlPanel::InvokePage('ms-settings:themes')'?

Yeah, I know. That demonstration is entirely incorrect, because it probably does not invoke a static method via PowerShell, but hopefully it demonstrates my question well.

Using a DS4 (PS4 Gamepad) was a disaster on Win 10, and it still is a disaster on Win 11

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:20 AM PST

Connecting a DS4 Gamepad via Bluetooth with a Win 10 PC was one of the most annoying experiences I've ever had with Windows - and I had quiet a lot, been using Windows since Windows 95...

When it's connected and you enter any kind of Windows menu except the explorer - nothing works, menus lag. If you press the Win button while it's connected - it just starts loads of apps for no reason.

This is a strange bug that I have with DS4 Gamepads on Win 10 and 11, please let it be fixed soon...

Why does volume control has so many increments?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 01:49 PM PST

    From 0 to 100 in increments of 2. That's 50 different levels

I don't need that precision. Why can't they make it like on MacOS where it's just 1 to 10. Is there a way to configure it that way?

    No PNG thumbnails

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:55 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/Eg6cwHw

I'm on Windows 10. This started about 2 days ago but I'm not sure what changed. This affects ONLY png files, everything else has thumbnails working properly. It also is happening on every drive.

I've tried all the usual fixes suggested such as disabling "always show icons, never thumbnails" in folder options as well as rebuilding thumbnail cache through disk cleanup.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

How to reset user profil after reboot

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:46 AM PST

    Hello guys,

Quick question here, i'm pretty sure there is a way to reset a profile in a specific state after a computer reboot, but i can't remember or find the explanation online to be honnest.

What i'm trying to do is pretty simple, i'm preparing computers for libraries, and i want to create a profile with specific links, shortcuts, tools, etc but NOTHING more, and i don't want people to be able to let anything on the session after a reboot.

Do you know if there's a way to do it directly on W10 or do i have to use a specific software for this ?

Thank you for your help ;)

Has anyone else had issues not accessing certain sites from windows sandbox?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 11:14 AM PST

recently I haven't been able to access sites like reddit, wikihow, etc. from my Windows Sandbox, I haven't found any info on this, I have disabled Windows Sandbox and re-enabled it, but nothing has changed. Since this issue arised, it has worked once (allowing comunication for these sites), but stopped working again. Google works, youtube works, but some other sites tend to hang.

Has anyone else had similar issues?
