I finally did it for the first time Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:26 PM PST I finally added "(I use Linux btw)" to a comment / post of mine. I feel proud and happy. That's all I had to say. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 06:28 AM PST I think it was yesterday that a problem occured with Yay and some inexperienced people like me were trying to work out what the problem was on their setups and fix it. I did my own research and simply switched from yay to paru for now. However, what got me is just how abrupt and short people are who are experienced users of Arch. People reach out for help and advice and they are met with short terse comments which don't explain anything, links to things they know people won't understand but expect them to instantly learn or people are just plain rude. Whilst I appreciate EndeavourOS is not pure Arch Linux; it is effectively impacted by some of the same issues such as this thing with Yay and the AUR. As such, someone reached out for help in r/archlinux subreddit and the overall response was to lock down the entire discussion and tell the person that it isn't Arch Linux and to take a hike on over to r/EndeavourOS. Overall, I just think some empathy, understanding and kindness would go a long way and ultimately help to encourage more in to the Linux world. They'll be more encouraged to learn and grow to fend for themselves eventually. Everyone has to start somewhere. [link] [comments] |

Help with partitions when distro hopping? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 07:06 AM PST I'm currently dual booting Windows 10 and Kubuntu 18.10. I'm trying to switch from Kubuntu to Linux Mint 20.3. I installed Kubuntu a few years back. Can anyone tell which partitions I'll have to wipe/merge to get rid of it? Any other recommendations for how to use space more efficiently? I'll be using both Windows and LM frequently and want both to work well. [link] [comments] |
how can i get stadia-like streaming quality from a local linux computer over lan? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 06:57 AM PST (my apologies, i didn't know how to write the title any better) i'm trying to figure out remote desktop to a linux box that's on my local network. i've tried vnc and nx and they are fine, but the framerate is not great. if i were to, for example, try to play a movie on the linux box and view it over vnc, it would be unwatchable (slow and inconsistent framerate etc). the reason i mentioned stadia is because that proved to me that it's possible to stream 4k 60fps in perfect quality over a network, so my real question is are there any remote desktop protocols that are capable of streaming linux's gui at full quality, full framerate? my linux box has a 5900x/2070 so in theory power shouldn't be an issue, but i'm just stuck because i don't know what remote desktop options are out there. Dual boot or Just stay with windows ? Posted: 04 Feb 2022 10:58 PM PST I have been interested in using Linux for so many years. But , I'm a civil engineering student and I badly need AutoCAD and Revit for my college. So I'm forced to stay with windows. I also searched web and found that Revit and AutoCAD in linux is not possible at the moment. Now that I'm thinking more about this , I'm wondering if I can dual boot linux for things like entertainment , studying etc and windows just for Revit and AutoCAD , or just stay with windows. Also I would like to know if I can access files between two os like if I have to copy a Revit saved file over in linux ( pop os preferably ). If I can do that , it would be so much easy for me . Like i can acces my music on both pop os and windows. If it is possible , pls let me know . I've tried Ubuntu , pop os , kubuntu , manjaro , fedora for like a month . But I'm sti a beginner. Hoping I would get good help 🙃. [link] [comments] |
Best laptop WiFi card that has no issues with Linux? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 04:30 AM PST I decided to install Arch on my other laptop but WiFi is acting funky. I looked up my WiFi card(Intel 9260) and apparently it does not play well with the Linux. Some manages to make it work but unfortunately it does not for me. To save myself headache, I decide to just replace it. What's the best compatible laptop WiFi card for Linux? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 20.04 keeps shutting down randomly Posted: 04 Feb 2022 10:18 PM PST I noticed it usually happens whenever I try some sort of new shit, like in gnome-tweaks I checked like one box in appearance by mistake and cancelled it. Boom, immediate shutdown. It's happened more than three times already and its really annoying to keep logging in, do kindly send help. If it helps, I'm using a GTX 1050 TI and motherboard is MSI. EDIT: Just switched to linux mint, and I think I found the problem. So I'm installing Middle Earth: Shadow of War on Steam right? Well right as I was fiddling around with firefox the pc shutdown. Then I noticed it also happened when I was still in ubuntu, so I'm thinking that for some reason the game is just incompatible with linux. EDIT2: Ignore the edit above lol, I think I found the real issue now. AMD Eco mode, I think that's why my PC keeps shutting down during the installation process. Because my CPU's base speed is 3.6 but in the BIOS menu its 4.2. I'll update again if I finish download Shadow of War. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 02:56 AM PST Sorry if the title is confusing. I have been running ubuntu (20.04) from a live usb with persistence for a while now and it has a bunch of apps and my customized settings. Now I want to run it on the hard drive itself and dual boot with windows 10. But instead of starting with a fresh install of ubuntu I want to install with all the apps and custom settings I've been using on my live usb. Is that a doable thing? [link] [comments] |
Looking for macOS Preview equivalent on Ubuntu 20.04 Posted: 04 Feb 2022 10:22 PM PST Hey peeps, I'm into my second month of using Ubuntu as my daily driver, and I'm gradually replacing my macOS workflows. One thing I really could use is a replacement for macOS Preview where I can copy a selection out of an image onto the clipboard and paste the selection into a new image. Does such a beast exist? I'm using imagemagick for things like conversion and resizing, but is there something simple that will allow me to select, cut and paste sections of an image? Surely. :) [link] [comments] |

musicplayers "Rhythmbox" and "Elisa" always reset volume to max level when skipping a song for me Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:46 AM PST I am using EndeavourOS (Arch based) KDE & Pipewire. I have this weird issue where my volume slider inside "Rhythmbox" (GNOME) and "Elisa" (KDE) will be reset to max volume on every song I skip or if the song automatically skips to the next one. On the other hand the music player "Audacious" and "Strawberry" don't exhibit such behavior. A similar behavior can be observed with Spotify: on every start up the volume is reset to maximum but the program stays at a volume if I change it again (at least until I close the program again). Can anyone help me with this? [link] [comments] |
