Posted: 10 Feb 2022 09:43 AM PST [SOLVED] I am trying to use Debian on my old laptop and everytime I try to install a package with apt I am given the error "Media change: please insert disc label 'Debian GNU/Linux 11.1.0 _Bullseye_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20211009-10:08' in drive '/media/cdrom/' and press [ENTER]" I used a flashdrive with ventoy on it to install Debian. I also voluntarily don't have a GUI because it is a very old laptop, don't suggest GUI applications. I plan on installing DWM on it. [link] [comments] |
Gnome Desktop, make faster or an alternative to Gnome Desktop. Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:14 AM PST Hello, so I like Gnome but it's extremely slow. I like Gnome because there is no taskbar and I have no issue pressing the windows button and then just search the program. I have never used any taskbar on Linux (simply useless) the search is so fast, that it's faster to windows-key, search, enter a program. Than using the mouse to click on the "quick shortcut" or a taskbar. My issue with Gnome is that it works good and I'm used to it but it feels like a Truck, it's not very fast but the way it works allows me to work fast on my linux. I use Arch Linux, and I'm interested also in ways I can improve Gnome to make it faster. I'm using Arch Linux and my PC is 3200G and a A300 MiniDesk Barebone with 2x4GB 2400mhz ram. Help! Need some Windows but i can not install them. Posted: 10 Feb 2022 07:29 AM PST Hi guys, some times ago i migrate to Linux Mint 20 and that bring perfectly back to life my pc, killed by Windows problems, bugs and viruses. I didn't have any problem until now, because i need to use some programs for work that are Windows only ( in particular same Adobe apps, unfortunately not replaceble by other alternative programs) I installed wine and tried to install them, but it gave me some problems and i couldn't manage to install them properly. I also tried to install windows in Virtual Box, but as long as i have 40 gb of free space left ( that are enough for my works) this will use like 20 gb of it and it seems too much for me. I have an external Hard Disk, but i dont have it here with me, and i would avoid buying another just for this. Do same of you have same suggestions to solve this problem? Are there some well done tutorial that explain the right way to install a Windows program on linux? Other wise i was looking for a light versions of Windows in order to install it to VB, but i cannot find them. Really thanks to who can help me! [link] [comments] |
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) Posted: 10 Feb 2022 10:03 AM PST I'm thinking of switching back to windows when I can't solve this. I installed artix next to my arch install, I shrunk my arch partition, and I checked multiple times after that to see if it corrupted anything(it didn't). Then I installed artix(using the gui installer) next to my arch. I booted into artix, everything was fine, but I noticed some weirdly named folders, they were mounted by /dev/sda1, 2 and 3. I'm assuming that the artix install relocated the arch install files. Now when I try to boot into arch, I get a kernel panic. Pictures of the kernel panic and weird folders are here, and a picture of my partitions on gparted are here. Tell me if you need more info [link] [comments] |
Finally installed Linux for the first in Life!! Posted: 09 Feb 2022 03:55 PM PST Migrated to Linux today @ 5am in the morning. Everything works fine. Wifi, bluetooth, sounds etc. Please guide me further to freedom. How can i start from here? I migrated for privacy and comparatively proper performace of my pc and light gaming. Posted: 10 Feb 2022 10:21 AM PST Am a noob. Trying to dual boot pop!_os with windows 10. My system has one of both ssd and hdd. I created unallocated volumes on both using windows. I want to keep the root in ssd and Now GParted recognises the partitions in ssd, like efi system partition for windows etc, and I'm able to select the unallocated memory and create partitions for pop os's boot and root partitions. But for the hdd, it doesn't read the partitions and just shows a 1tb block. In windows, the hdd has 3 volumes/partitions, 1 of them being unallocated. How do I select the unallocated one only to create the [link] [comments] |
Looking to buy a new laptop to continue my work and studies. Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:29 PM PST Unfortunately a close family member is ill due to old age and I find myself away from home accompanying this dear person. Ive been using an iPad Air 2 for reading, videos etc but it is too limited for real work. I was wondering if the Linux community could help me determine what could be a good find that is appropriate. My main line of work is development using Visual Studio Code and the terminal in Linux using Zshell my distro is Mint, and a good screen that is easy on the eyes is a must. Perhaps 15 inch is appropriate, battery life is also important as sometimes I find myself taking long train rides. In addition to this NVMe SSD drive, at least 16GB of RAM, occasional Windows for gaming. My budget is around 1750, give or take a few hundred. Considering my needs and budget what would you guys recommend? Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |

Curious why mounting a certain nfs export creates a rpc-statd.service symlink? Posted: 10 Feb 2022 12:48 PM PST mounting hostname:/run/dir creates a symlink and all other mounts do not. It isn't an issue. I am just curious why. Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:47 AM PST I have a server on an old laptop I'm using for smart home stuff (lights, automation, docker, Plex, etc.) and I connect all the smart devices directly to the laptop via hotspot I made using nmcli. I've disabled sleep and hibernation and all that jazz. I've noticed that eventually the hotspot stops allowing connections. It still shows up in lists on my current laptop and phone but it does not allow me to connect to them. This is not ideal because everything else also disconnects. The only solution so far is to completely reboot the host. I can still SSH into it via ethernet so rebooting isn't too much of a hassle, but it just gets annoying when asking google to toggle the lights and at least once a day it yells at me that it can't connect to the network. The WiFi adapter looks to be some intel make (I ran "sudo lshw -C network") and my suspicion, after a bit of research, is that after a while the adapter itself just kinda sleeps. This didn't make too much sense to me because if it were connected to wifi it would never just disconnect but I figure those might just be different methods and protocols. Does anyone have any possible solution or hint towards a possible solution for me to look into? tl;dr Ubuntu Server hotspot stops allowing connections after a while. Any way to prevent this? How best to allow a script root access without giving user root access? Posted: 10 Feb 2022 02:12 AM PST Hello, noob question here. On one server, A, I have a Jenkins instance running. I want to have a job on this Jenkins instance that updates some code on another server, B. My plan is, have a Jenkins that that: - scp the code from A to B - ssh into B from A - Install the code on B - Done The problem is, I need root access to install the code, but I don't want to enable ssh as root on B for security. Is there a way to create a user on B I can ssh into, that runs a script to install the code as root, but have the only thing the user can do as 'root' is running this script? Or if I create a non-root user but give that user root access, is that any less secure? What's the best procedure here? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:00 AM PST Hi, I want to have power profiles (i.e., performance, balance, power-saving) for when I am working unplugged. However, I do not have these options when I go to Settings and Power. My system is as follows: - Model: HP Victus 16 - CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 - GPU: RTX 3050 ti - Ubuntu: 20.04 - Kernel: 5.13.0 - DE: Gnome 3.36.8 Then, my questions are: - What do I need to do to get power mode options in Settings-Power? - If that is not possible, which power management app is recommended? I have seen there are apps like jupiter and slimbook, which do what I want. [link] [comments] |
