Mom! Dad's messing with the internet again! Posted: 04 Feb 2022 11:20 PM PST Hello Reddits, Trying to improve/optimize home network setup. Several DQ's to ask ( sorry this is long-winded). Cable company upgraded local area lines to fibre optic so I signed up. They provided an all-in-one cable modem/WiFi router/VoIP (Arris model TG3452A/CG). 2 objectives: Optimize basement TV's internet connection (the home theatre) so I can watch some hi-def TV on Netflix. Fix the boss' TV Internet connection in her bedroom on 2nd floor, opposite corner of house from basement TV (speed and reliability). (Basement, main floor, 2nd floor: 3 level house ) Available equipment: -Two ASUS RT-AC1900P routers with AI mesh capability (old setup) - Hitron cable modem (old set up) - Yamaha receiver RX-V385 - PlayStation PS4 Pro - 50 ft cable of cat 6 ethernet cable. I put the Arris cable modem/ WiFi router in the basement beside the electrical panel so the coaxial cable coming into house can plug directly into it. This allowed me to run the cat 6 ethernet cable directly from it over to the basement TV. The con is that the WiFi signal strength sucks in the master bedroom. I thought I'd disable the WiFi on the Arris cable modem/ WiFi router. I'll put the ASUS router near the basement TV to allow direct ethernet connection. Then setup the 2nd ASUS router on main floor under master bedroom - it'll relay WiFi from main ASUS router (wireless connect between the two ASUS routers since can't figure out how to run a cable between them - ASUS calls it an AI mesh). My DQ's: Ok to daisy chain the Arris cable modem/WiFi router to the ASUS router at TV? Or does that substantially reduce data speed? I'm confused about setup at basement TV. It's probably ideal if TV connects directly to Arris cable modem but since I only have 1 ethernet line it must go to the ASUS router. The PS4 can direct connect to the ASUS router. Is it best if its HDMI cable connects to the Receiver or the TV, or doesn't matter? If you read this far - Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How to fix double NAT on Xbox with 2 ISP’s? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:02 AM PST Recently had a second internet service installed at my house. The first service is DSL, this new one is broadband and has faster speeds. They are two separate companies. When I connect my Xbox to the new service, I have Double NAT. Can the two services be interacting in some way to cause this? When my Xbox is connected to the old DSL, there are no issues. Double NAT occurs wired and wireless. Both connections have router-modem combined devices. Have tried setting new router to bridge mode, access point mode, enabling IPv6 pass through. Have reset the router and Xbox multiple times while trying all of those things. Have tried changing alternate port selection on Xbox. I'm stumped, in my eyes the two services shouldn't be interacting, but if they are, is there is a way to prevent that? Or is there anything else I can try to get rid of this double NAT? Every source I've found to fix this issue assumes there are two routers on the same network. I have two routers but they are two different networks, just doesn't make any sense to me. is the AX56u good for 90 euro? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 03:12 AM PST hi im looking for a good router one person suggested methe AX56U and i found discount on it, its the AX1800 WiFi-6 model with quad core cpu is it good coming from an DIR 869 Dlink? will the range and quality better? i have 100 Down 40Up connection with good support ( updates during the years) and good control over the network like limiting time usage blocking sites ( like reddit , twitter) and if possible controlling how much bandwith each device use thank you here the asus page https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-Routers/ASUS-WiFi-Routers/RT-AX56U/ [link] [comments] |
Best brand(s) for home networking equipment for the ‘professional level’ consumer? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 03:08 AM PST Soon enough I am looking to build a no-compromise level network setup in my home and wanted to know what brand would be the best out there to go with if money isn't an issue. Performance performance performance. Very curious. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 02:49 AM PST Home network? Any advice Hi all, we are moving home and are moving to a house with quiet thick walls. I am looking at flooding the house with wifi. Could anyone recommend a router and a some access points that would achieve this? Simple setup would be ideal. I'm not really sure of the budget really, but I suppose middle of the road. Thanks for all advice [link] [comments] |
Firewall settings with streaming services. Posted: 05 Feb 2022 02:46 AM PST Good afternoon, Please could someone advise me on the appropriate settings to use for the firewall on my Draytek router. I have a server running as a media center that can be accessed from clients outside my home network. In the interest of security I was hoping to turn on the firewall but I don't want it to affect my services. Please see picture attached. Could anyone shed some light on how to achieve this? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Weird One: Internet slows or dies every night/early morning Posted: 05 Feb 2022 02:04 AM PST This is a strange one we can't figure out. It started happening about two or three months ago, and we haven't changed anything in the house or on the computers to prompt it. We're using Comcast 600mbs cable connection with a Netgear modem/router. We also have Linksys nodes around the house. During the day, everything is totally fine. We get the speeds we expect with no interruption. However, once it's around 12 or 1AM, things can start slowing to a crawl or even completely stop working. It varies quite a bit. I can wake up at 5:30a and things are totally fine at first. Then it all craps out within 15-20 mins. It can be intermittent. A reset gets it working again, but it's temporary. It will slow again. Somewhere between 8a-9a, the problem totally disappears, never to return until the next night/morning. This is every single day now. We've had Comcast out twice. They've checked and rechecked everything. Modem's fine, mesh is fine. They replaced a few lines. They checked and tested outdoor connections. I've checked for unauthorized devices on the network during the slow times. Nope, it's all ours. Did the usual malware and registry checks on the PCs and checked bandwidth usage. I googled all kinds of network settings and solutions. I'm out of ideas. But it is so strange how it only starts at night and then vanishes in the morning. I had a crackpot theory it was the cold (NorCal, sometimes 30s overnight). But Comcast replaced the outdoor lines during their first visit. I think the Netgear event log - it is full of events - is probably telling me something, but I have no idea how to read the thing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. We both work from home and I go to college online full time. I have a major exam coming in a week that must take place in the morning, and complications from this issue is the last thing I want to wrestle with. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 01:58 AM PST I installed a ping app from google play store, disabled mobile data, let it run while I played games, the game cuts out, but via wifi, the phone still pings without a problem and with no discernable drop in latency even. It can't be the cable, I replaced a barely hanging on cat5e cable thinking its the cable and me stepping on it etc that causes the cut outs, but....with a new cat6a with full shielding, the problem continues, so its definetely not the cable. I did drop the router a while back, could that be the cause? [link] [comments] |
Any Xfinity approved gigabit MoCA routers? Posted: 05 Feb 2022 01:22 AM PST I can't seem to find any gigabit or gigabit+ MoCA routers at all, let alone ones that are Xfinity approved. Anyone know models or a company? I know that GCI in Alaska has a model of router that has MoCA but unfortunately I don't know what it is. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:31 AM PST I'm in a bit of a pickle here. For a while now, I've been feeding my PC with a 4G router, which works great (50 Mbps). However, I already have another network in my home, and it's sort of wasteful to be paying an extra $35 every month. Today I discovered that there is an actual ethernet port quite close to my PC, but when I plugged it in, the results were very disappointing (6 Mbps). I went to reset the router, but to my shock I realised it was being run by a powerline adapter. So… how can I make the main router not suck, and the ethernet port that's close to my PC usable? No, I can not dig up my walls. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:27 AM PST Hello Sadly, we only still have ADSL2+ where I live. I was looking for a ADSL2+ router as I was to experiment with some networking configuration. The only thing I need is for it to support ADSL2+, bridge mode, some kind of wireless (802.11n is enough) and thats about it. I dont think there are many ADSL2+ routers that support OpenWRT/etc. So any recommendations? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Whole network replacement recommendations Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:09 AM PST I've got a UDM, a slew of the cheap 5 port UniFi managed switches, and a Unifi AP. I'm running 10 VLANs to separate my many traffic types, including a home server, and a lab. While the switches were really finnicky and kept unrecoverably bricking during initial update when I first got them (I had to RMA 8 of them in a row), they're very stable now. The AP also had some update stability issues briefly, but seems to be chugging along great now. Unfortunately my UDM has consistently been trash and I'm too fed up to deal with it, so I'm replacing it. While I'm guaranteed going to replace the UDM that doesn't successfully perform the most basic of function's properly, I'm on the fence as to whether I should replace the switches and/or AP also. Most devices I'm looking at would need another AP to replace the one in the UDM, and I'd have to run the UniFi controller from a VM on my network to manage the remaining product's if I kept any of them. I'm looking to ideally keep the budget under $1200, but that could change if I transition some of the equipment over time rather than all at once. [link] [comments] |
Forward or reverse proxy with static IP Posted: 04 Feb 2022 11:26 PM PST I want to whitelist my mobile IP address for incoming traffic on a remote firewall, but the mobile IP frequently changes. I am thus looking for a service as follows. I will authenticate my phone to the service, for example at Cloudflare or AWS, and my traffic is proxied through that relay with a static public IP. This way I get a fixed IP address. This service cannot be based on VPN because after connection I may have to vpn to the firewall (some applications require that). I don't think I can run two VPNs simultaneously, at least on phones. It need not be encrypted, it's just a relay node forwarding traffic. In this manner I lock down the traffic to a server only to one IP address. I don't know if it's called a reverse proxy. Is this possible? How to do it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2022 10:36 PM PST So my LANC won't let me grab ip's from my main device that I'm using it on since I need to enable ARP Spoofing to grab anything at all, and since I'm enabling to to do so it's spoofing my ip with it I THINK (I'm not very good at this stuff) so its not giving me the option to use my own ip (my pc's ip, not wifi) to pull ip's that are connected to my pc.
