Which Windows laptops have the best internal (built-in) speakers?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 07:47 PM PST

One of my friends has a Macbook Pro, and the internal (built-in) speakers on it are incredible, with heavy bass and a subwoofer.

What Windows laptops have the best internal built-in speakers with heavy bass/subwoofer? Are any comparable to the Macbook Pro in terms of sound quality?

any "thin and light" gaming laptop recommendations under 1300 USD??

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 11:52 PM PST

Hello! I'm currently a first year architecture student and I am looking for a laptop around 1300 USD.

Since we will be doing architectural rendering in school soon, I want something with enough power to handle my renders while also being portable enough for me to carry around. I also play games sometimes such as Valorant, GTA V, F1 2021 and I've been wanting to try some AAA titles if I get a new laptop.

I'm currently eyeing the 2021 ASUS TUF Dash F15 with the i5 11300h with the RTX 3060. I plan to add an additional 8GB of ram as well as an additional SSD. I'm aware of the cons of this laptop particularly the four core CPU, the lack of a MUX switch (I'll be using a secondary monitor so it doesn't bother me much), the 80-85 TDP 3060, and the lack of a webcam. Since I don't know any other "thin and light" gaming laptops under my budget this is my current best bet.

Do y'all have any recommendations for a laptop that is powerful enough and relatively thin and light but won't break my bank??

Leaning towards Thinkpads for mobile web app programming and light graphic design. Thoughts?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 10:18 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
~$2000, willing to budge a lil but only if I have to
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Willing to go used if the quality is near new so I can save a few bucks. It's a shitshow out here with inflation lol
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life for sure is most important so I can be mobile and work from anywhere with Wi-Fi. Build: I just want a simple laptop, no gaming frills or something that screams it wants to be stolen. Performance-wise: would be preferred to have a lot of RAM. Leaning towards 32GB since I do so much multitasking. I don't care about touch, I'll never use it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'm trying to be mobile so thinner & lighter would be best!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15/16"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mainly work (web dev), which would be lots of virtualized servers and connecting to APIs etc, and Graphic Design! (Adobe Illustrator)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
ehhh YouTube is my game-equivalent lol
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A massive touchpad would be SICK. USBC + USBA would be preferred I/O, and if possible USBC charging!
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Heya guys, I've been looking for a new machine for a while, and I still feel like I'm getting nowhere. I do web development, and research with a ton of tabs open in my browser usually. I've looked at and am leaning towards the Thinkpad P1 Gen 4 and X1 Extreme, curious if anybody else has something similar near that! Thanks

Will begin traveling for work soon. Would also like to be able to game. I’m a PC noob. Please help.

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 09:29 PM PST

I'll begin traveling for work in the next few months. Will probably be doing this once or twice a year for the foreseeable future, possibly more. I will obviously use it more than that many times in a year but that's the main reason I'm looking for one. For that, I'll mostly just need a web browser and Microsoft office, so nothing crazy. However, I'd also like to be able to run games. I gravitate towards open world RPGs like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Assassin's Creed, shooters like Halo and (mostly formerly) Call of Duty, and sports games like Madden (even though it sucks), with some other things sprinkled in. I'm looking to keep it under $1500 but I suppose I could go slightly over if it's really worth it, but I will absolutely not go over $2000. I would really prefer it have a headphone jack but it's not a deal breaker as long as there's some adapter I can get. Any help is appreciated!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1500 USD (United States).

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I do not want a tablet or touchscreen. Just a laptop. Build quality, performance, and battery life are all important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderately. I will be traveling with it but not incredibly often.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Between 13 and 17 inches, 15 seems about right but not super important.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming yes. Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Halo, Madden, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      I don't know, 60?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just a solid, well built laptop.

    ~$1200 lightweight laptop options?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 12:32 AM PST

I've actually narrowed my choice between Asus Zenbook and Macbook Air M1 2020, but still open to hear more options. Although those two would likely be on my priority. Tbh I'm leaning more towards the MBA, but I'm afraid I can't keep up with the ecosystem or maintenance. I'm a bit clumsy.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~$1200, lesser the better lol
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life > performance and build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
VERY IMPORTANT. I like to move around while working
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I think I prefer 13" or 14" but anything else isn't a dealbreaker
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photoshop, Premiere Pro, AI. I'm learning how to edit videos and would like to learn more about UI/UX--hasn't done much research on the programs rho

What to look for and what brands to avoid when buying a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 08:38 PM PST

My dad mentioned getting a gaming laptop and it sounds like a good idea. Problem is, I know nothing about PCs. I am a console guy because I don't like looking into all the stuff.

I looked up a quick guide for gaming laptops and it seems like CPU, GPU, additional RAM ports, keyboard and screens are what you want to look out for. What is a good setup when it comes to these features? It's easy to understand the key travel and screens size, but the others are more complex.

I also want to know which brands to trust. I don't want to be upcharged for a brand name just because some company has a loyal fan base like Apple. I also want to avoid budget companies that have laptops that only last a few years. If I'm buying one, I want one that will be viable for a decade as at least a work computer.

The most intensive games I'd like to play are DMC5, Tabletop Simulator and Tales of Arise, but I'd also want it to be relevant for a few years on at least moderate settings.

I don't have a budget right now, since I'll have to save no matter what, but would prefer to try staying under $1000. Feel free to laugh and mock me in the comments if this is ridiculous. I can keep saving for a few extra months if I need to.

Thanks for any help and recommendations.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Nrs 200k,

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but I doubt there would be refurbs so early since I'm planning to buy a new gen laptop.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Form Factor - Relatively Thin. And Good battery Life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderate. Enough so I don't get a back workout walking to and from college.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 inche would be good. Like a small form factor g14. 16:10 isn't really important tho.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light Gaming, Computer Science, specifically for a BIT student, so mainly for programming and some gaming on the side.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Any eSports title at playable frame rates. Valo, Cs, Dota, Lol among others, low settings ofc.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Not really.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking if there's a only iGPU laptop from AMD coming up that I don't know about. The 6000 mobile series looks really promising with new integrated graphics and the power efficiency shown from newly reviewed g14 seems really good. So a team red laptop is what Im looking for I guess?

Not overly important, just enough to be portable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Looking for a Laptop for either dual boot into Linux or only Linux

      Yes I am
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Hope for 1080p screen with decent speakers for watching videos and Battery life isn't too important as it'll be mainly used at work
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that important at all honestly, as long as it doesn't break easily
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
None of the above honestly, don't need some beefy machine for gaming as I have my own PC for it
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality for sure, that's simply it. Also I'd want the touchpad to not die in less than a year, my current Laptop has a messed up touchpad preventing it from booting after switching it to Linux
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
One last thing I'd like the Laptop to have is upgradeable storage/RAM if the RAM is below 8GB and if the storage is like 64GB. Honestly I just want to replace my other Laptop, I've had it for less than a year and there's no way to get a warranty claim on it cause I bought it from Walmart (they didn't send any information on the warranty). I thank you for taking the time to read this and hope I can find something.

I am pretty opinionated on x1c gen 6 and sl4 but can't decide which would cause me less problem for the next 5 years at least. I mean, I am totally in sl4 for the looks. beautiful design. amd 5, 16 gb and cool metal black will be adequate for me. but the x1c is, to popular opinion and general knowledge - more durable and it doesn't look that bad itself I guess. but still.

    17.3" Gaming | USA | $2500

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 04:22 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Between $1500 and $2500. USA.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Portability doesn't matter. Performance and build quality are highest priorities.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all - think "desktop replacement."

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17/17.3" - will begrudgingly settle for 15" if there are no suitable 17" options.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming only.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

RTX 3070-level performance at minimum. Must be a high-wattage configuration with good cooling.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Screen must be IPS or OLED 120Hz+. Must be either 1920x1080 or 3840x2160. ABSOLUTELY NO 2560x1440 or any aspect ratios other than 16:9. MUX switch required. ABSOLUTELY NO NUMPAD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

RTX 3070 w/ 1080p or RTX 3080 w/ 2160p are ideal. RTX 3080 w/ 1080p is also acceptable, but at that point the screen should be 240Hz+. The Alienware x17 is what I have been looking at the most, since it meets almost all of my needs, but I can't find any with the mechanical keyboard option. It is hard to justify the price premium without that component. If anyone can find it with the mechanical keys, please let me know.

I mentioned only Nvidia cards throughout, but I have no preference for Nvidia vs AMD vs Intel. This is a pure gaming device. Any recording/streaming/editing I may do will be done on another PC via capture card. Whatever gives the highest and most stable frame rates wins.

Honestly, I would just build a new desktop, but with the price of a graphics card + a good display, you are already close to the price of a laptop, so why bother?

Any recommended brands/specs for a workstation laptop? I need to submit specs to my work.

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 07:06 PM PST

Hi all. I need to submit a laptop request at work. I'll be using it primarily for Autodesk 3ds Max, Photoshop, and Vray rendering. With 12th gen Intel not available on laptops yet would Ryzen 5 be recommended over 11th gen Intel? I'll be CPU and likely GPU rendering in Vray and need GPU for viewport functionality and any Adobe hardware acceleration available. With that in mind I'd like to avoid thermal throttling if possible for longer renders.

I generally know what specs I'm looking for but they frustratingly haven't given me a budget I need to work within. They'll just tell me yes or no when I submit.

I've looked at Dell XPS since Dell is basically who they go with for general purpose laptops. Are there any manufacturers known for workstation quality? Does anybody have 12th gen Intel for laptops yet that don't look like gaming PCs?

General specs: 15" 60hz 1080p or higher screen 32gb Ram High end Intel i7, i9, or Ryzen 5000 series RTX 3070 preferred but more likely to be doing CPU rendering than GPU or hybrid so could go lower

    Thanks!

So, as the title says, I'm looking for a new laptop. I've been eyeing the G14 for a while now, and with the price reveal of the 2022 model, it's unfortunately out of my budget (£1000, max £1200). I might end up getting the 2021 model, but I'd like to explore some options.

My main priority is a productivity laptop with good battery (8 ish hours), that is portable (14"-15.6", max 2kg), that I can game with. Tbh my current laptop with 8th gen core i5 and a GTX 1050 does everything I need it to do in terms of gaming, so almost anything is a spec bump at this point.

The programs I'd be running (other than normal Chrome stuff) would be things like Pycharm, and games like Apex and Valorant, which I'd like to run at 120fps. I occasionally play things like Witcher, so it'd be nice if the laptop is capable of this (60fps on low settings), though not a dealbreaker if it can't.

Given that a GTX 1050 is still adequate for my needs, I think getting a RTX 3060 would be overkill (though there is something to be said about future proofing, I'd like this to still run games moderately well in 4-5 years). I'd much rather have something with longer battery life and is more portable, than a gaming-first machine.

That's all, thanks everyone in advance!

Potential to acquire a Alienware 17 R5 Gaming Laptop with 2 power supplies, and Alienware Backpack.

I am currently selling my macbook, and I received an offer for a trade. I would trade my mac for the gaming laptop listed in the title. I personally know nothing about gaming laptops, but a quick google search reveals that the gaming laptop in question retails for much more than my mac.

The gentleman offering the trade does not game anymore and wants a laptop that is more compatible with an office environment. Assuming the lap top is in good condition (claims it is), is this a trade that seems financially smart for me? Also, assuming I acquire said laptop where is the best place to resell it? I have no intention of using it for gaming.

LG Ultra PC 15.6" Lightweight Laptop - 11th Gen Intel i7-1165G7 - GeForce GTX 1650Ti

I am looking for light internet use with occasional gaming, but mostly for writing. I like the battery life, but I am not familiar with all the features. I would appreciate any insight on the performance, screen, keyboard ECT.

15" screen 2 USB-C or HDMI ports for external monitors would be a plus. Thank you in advance for the help!

Alternative to LG Gram 17z90p g.aa88b

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 03:32 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking for an alternative to the Lg gram 17z90p g.aa88b. The point of this laptop to me is the really low weight and its 16/17 inches screen. I need it for office work, I'm a teacher. Specs:

    CPU: i7-1165G7 RAM: 16Gb SSD: 512Gb. Weight: 1.2/1.3 kg

    Screen: 16"/17" 2560x1600, IPS, DCI P3 99%, 300 nits. Battery: 80Wh, 10336mAh Po-Li ~15h Backlight keyboard.

    Price (at my country): 1500€.

I just need to know if there is any better option for those specs, with special interest on weight and screen size.

    Thanks so much.
