This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

What was the first time you installed a part yourself?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:58 AM PST

I installed a part myself for the first time yesterday! I've always had prebuilt PC's or ones made by other people for me in the past. I currently have an iBuyPower PC, and my water-cooler went out. I bought a Corsair H60 and got it installed myself 😌 I know for all of you advanced builders that's no biggie but I was satisfied. I've done my own graphics card before too but that's very plug and play.

What was your first build/part installed? Tell us about it! 🗣️

Graphics driver update has made my games unplayable

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:33 AM PST

I am mainly a Rust player but I play fortnite on the side with friends. When I would boot up Fortnite it said that my drivers were incompatible but gave me an option to just skip through it. That is usually what I would do but I decided one day to update my drivers anyway. After updating my games began to stutter and frame drop really badly. I would like to say that there is a chance the driver update has nothing to do with it because I would experience the occasional frame drop before but it seemed to get a lot worse after the update. In Rust, even my audio will bug out when I get a frame drop. I used to be really good at this kind of thing but I'm really not anymore. I tried changing all my overclocks and power limits I had from before back to default settings and I also tried updating my chipeset drivers and reinstalling the graphics drivers I had updated. I have a 3070, ryzen 7 2700x, 16gb ram at 3200 mhz, and a b450 motherboard. Any help would be apprecieted. I seem to have lost my PC tech support skills ;(

    I'm a dumbass

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 12:59 AM PST

To simply put, I'm a huge dumbass.

So here's the story, I built my PC a few months back. Had everything done perfectly without any issues. And 2 months ago I bought an extra NVMe drive(separate from OS drive) to use as fast storage for games and such. After I bought it and brought it home I looked into my PC case and stared at my motherboard for a bit and went "wait I don't have a second slot for a second m.2 drive". So I proceeded to just give my dad an upgrade to his old PC so he can boot faster, and move on from windows 7. But today, I was looking at Biostar motherboards I suddenly had the urge to go through my motherboards box and realized, "I DO HAVE A SECOND M.2 SLOT!". I didn't even realize at the beginning since the GPU was blocking the view, the box clearly says it has two so I'm just an idiot at the end of the day.

Calling old farts of the sub! Let's reminisce on how computers used to be awful/amazing and harp on how the young folks have it easy!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:02 AM PST

Who here remembers when a game you had spent hours downloading wouldn't work because you were out of conventional RAM and you had to spend a couple hours working on your config.sys and autoexec.bat trying to re-configure things, and wondering if you needed to sacrifice a device driver in order to get that one game working??

Do you remember trying to fix an IRQ conflict and you checked it back and forth knowing that you were GODDAMN SURE your IRQ setting was accurate, only to login to the board manufacturer's BBS and they had an announcement that the jumper diagram that came in the manual was incorrect?

Do you have fond memories of trying to remove some jank software that you installed that you had to go to each subdirectory and type "DEL star-dot-star" and then remove each directory individually, only to find out after pulling your hair out that your brother had hidden some downloaded BBS porn in one of the directories, and he had hidden the file attributes, all of this before DELTREE existed?

    This thread is for you.

Let's attach our SCSI cables from the CD-ROM to the sound card, plop in our FP-SIMM sticks (THAT HAVE TO BE INSTALLED IN PAIRS), laugh at the length of VESA Local Bus cards, and remind ourselves of how much better/worse things used to be!

    Help to choose a case

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:48 AM PST

I am building my new PC.

The motherboard is E-ATX type (Z690 AORUS MASTER) and the cooler for the CPU (i9-12900K) is "Cooler Be Quiet Silent Loop 2 360mm ".

I am looking for a case that is compatible with the E-ATX format motherboard and cooler, I need to use the cage for the HDDs. Which case do you recommend? I don't care if it looks good (a transparent wall is fine) as long as the components fit inside.

    Thank you.

Bad frames with "good" gaming pc, help appreciated! :)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:12 AM PST

    Hi all,

My friend bought a gaming pc from a big retailer (kind of like a wallmart pc) I didnt advice him to until i saw the specs which werent actually bad, to my suprise its frames where not good at all and had frequent drops in the 20 fps on for example fortnite and arround 70-90 if absolutely at best.

    Here are the specs:

    GPU: 3060 ti msi ventus 2 x

    CPU: i5-11400f (stock cooler)

RAM: samsung 1x16 gb 3200 mhz

    BOARD: msi h510m pro

    POWER: 500 watts

    STORAGE: SSD 252 GBs

Im not sure why they put a single channel 16gb in there, but i think this bottlenecks the cpu and so the gpu.

GPU is pretty much always idle at 10-30% usage and arround 50 celius on val and below 50% on fortnite both on highest settings and 1080p. CPU usage is always higher than gpu with 40-50% on val and 70-100% on fortnite and with 80 celius on both games.

I dont think the 11400f should bottleneck a 3060 ti this much, so would you advice buying another 16gb 3200mhz ram stick to make it dual channel, and so hopefully improve the bottleneck/frames?

*Note, its supposedly prebuild but i spend hours installing every driver, bios and things possible.

    Thanks!

Ryzen 5 5600x air cooler upgrade suggestions?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:37 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade the air cooler on my CPU (5600x). I think the stock cooler has been making odd noises, and I'm looking for something super quiet and reliable. I can spend around $100CAD. I just game and don't mess around in the BIOS too much, if you know what I mean ;) I prefer air cooling because I don't want a bunch of juice zipping around my electronics. I'll listen to any suggestions though.

Ans tips for switching cpu in the same socket?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:07 PM PST

    I have this setup currently:

    Asrock h97m pro4

    I5-4460

    Rx570

    550w psu

I plan to upgrade the cpu to a 4790. I expect to go it smooth without any issue since I'm staying on the same board. According to my understanding not even a windows reinstall is needed.

However you never know what might goes wrong when building a pc so I'm wondering if there is anything particular I should pay attention to.

Issues with new 3080 TI crashing my games/pc.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:52 AM PST

So I replaced my 2070 Super with an Asus TUF series 3080ti, and I updated my drivers through Nvidia Geforce Experience as one does.

My issue now is that when I play Halo Infinite at max setting, I crash after 1/2 games. Control crashes after 10-20 minutes. Basically anything graphically demanding crashes. I ran some Xbox cloud gaming and that all ran fine, Minecraft and older games like Payday 2 also run perfectly fine. Anything I actually WANT to play crashes.

Any ideas on whats going on? Or can someone walk me through how to troubleshoot this so I can actually use my new card to the fullest?

My 11-year-old PC is reaching the end of its lifecycle. My friend is offering to sell me his 6-year-old PC. Is it a good deal?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:15 AM PST

Hello everyone, I think my PC that I built in 2011 is reaching the end of its lifecycle. I can no longer play current-gen games with high graphics, nor older games modded, and I do computationally demanding things now that I didn't do when I built it, like deep learning, video rendering, other programming, etc. It also seems to be generally slower, but that might be partially due to dust buildup (it's due for a cleanup).

I was beginning very preliminary plans to get a new PC sometime late 22/early 23, but then my friend told me that I can buy his PC that he built in October 2015, for 500 euros (I might have some room to negotiate). For extra info, my budget when I built my PC was about 1500 euros (1674 dollars). Here are the specs of the two PCs:

    My 2011 PC:

    CPU: Intel Core 2500K

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 5870 (Sapphire HD 5870 Vapor-X OC according to GPU-Z)

    Motherboard: Asus P8P67 REV 3.0

Memory: Kingston 2x4 GB DDR3 (part number is 9905403-198.A00LF but I can't find the commercial name even with that)

CPU cooler: Noctua, unknown model, looks like this. It must be either the NH-D15 or 14

    PSU: EVGA 600W 80 PLUS

Case: Cooler Master HAF series, I think HAF 922

Storage: Samsung 840 series 120 GB SSD, WD Caviar Black 1 TB

    Friend's 2015/2016 PC:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 6700

    GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

    Motherboard: Asus Maximus VIII Ranger

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4-2400

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3 190W TDP

    PSU: Combat Power CP 750W

Case: be quiet! unknown model, looks like this, pretty sure it's the Silent Base 601

    Storage: Crucial BX100 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB

Tell me if there's any info missing, but I think that's all of it.

Assuming this is a good deal, by the end I will have two PCs. Are there any parts in the 2011 one that are better and should be moved to the other one (taking into account their 11 year age)? I know my CPU fan is among the best. Or could I combine some of them (for example the HDDs, RAM, maybe using two graphics cards, etc.)? Another option could be to sell both or either of them for parts and build the PC I want (though that's a gamble and out of the scope of this sub, also I'm aware of the current GPU shortage).

Generally I can see a lot of options after getting the other PC, so my questions come down to:

    1. Is this a good deal?
    2. Assuming it is, how can I maximize the benefit of having these two PCs, either financially or performance-wise? (tell me if giving this advice would be a violation of rule 11)
    3. And my main concern: by buying this PC, would I just be delaying the necessity of a new PC purchase by a few years at most?

Putting four monitors on my laptop

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:14 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I have a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 with two external monitors hooked up to a docking station. I received two additional monitors, and I'd like to get them set up too - but from what I've read, my laptop can only support two external monitors. What can I do/add to the laptop to get two more set up? I don't game - it's purely work/business applications. The worst I do is video conferencing/streaming television.

    Upgrading my current PC (slowly)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:54 AM PST

Hi there everyone, So it's been 5 years since I bought my PC and I am now looking to upgrade it, slowly though since I am planning on buying an 2060 or better (probably around November or December this year) and the current prices are too much for me. Though I do not know in what order to upgrade my parts currently and which what components, that's why I would like some help on what to upgrade for now.

Current build consists of : - Ryzen 5 1600x (maybe upgrading it to r5 5600G) - MSI Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti -16GB ( corsair at 3200MHz but due to limitations I am getting 2933 or around that) - Gigabyte AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard - A coolermaster power supply at 450 or 650W ( have to open my PC to check but I just need a suggestion on how many W I need) - A Sata 3 SSD 248GB - 1TB HDD Western Digital

Main things I am doing on it are gaming ( heavy gaming I have to say), running software like lightroom and for mathematical calculations (University) and programming ( not much). Also I am a bit worried about the bottleneck in case I buy 5600G with my 1050ti.

My first PC build (for gaming) - is this a good combo?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:57 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I've been using Macs for the past 15 years. The last time I had a PC was while I was in high school :)I still use Macs for work but I am thinking of having a PC for gaming (possibly work as well, photo editing, sometimes video editing).

I've done some research and boy does this thing cost :D

I'm not in a rush so I was thinking of getting piece by piece when I can afford it and slowly put everything together.

I tried finding some of the best components (listed below), and I'd like to know:

    A) Would this all work together nicely or something won't fit, or have any other issues?

    B) Are there better alternatives to some of the components out there, and by better I mean cheaper but of the same/similar quality and/or performance.

    • CASE: Corsair 4000D Airflow Black
    • CPU: Intel Core i7 12700k
    • MOTHERBOARD: Asus ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming WiFi D4
    • RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (2x16 GB) DDR4
    • SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
    • PSU: Corsair RMx Series RM850x
    • COOLER: Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black
    • GPU: Radeon RX 6700 XT Red Devil 12GB
    • MOUSE: Logitech g502 Lightspeed
    • KEYBOARD: Logitech G915 TKL Tactile
    • MONITOR: Xiaomi Mi 34"

Do I need a case cooler too?

Also, is this overkill? I'd like it to be future-proof as much as possible.

    Thanks everyone

P.S. I'm new on Reddit and new PC builder so be gentle :p

Do I need to upgrade my PSU for a 3060Ti?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:21 PM PST

    Hey folks,

My trusty old R9 285 has been showing compatibility issues with my new Alder Lake platform and I've been eyeing up a few 3060Tis that are up for sale here locally. After hearing what people had to say about power spiking issues with Ampere, I'm worried that my 550W Seasonic unit won't be enough to cover it. Do I need a PSU upgrade? People seem to be conflicted on this discussion.

My i5 consumes about 170W under maximum stress with Prime95 small FFTs. Everything else in the system should consume around 75W, leaving over 300W still for the GPU, right?

    Specs: i5-12600KF Sapphire R9 285 Compact ITX OC MSI MAG B660M Mortar WiFi DDR4 2x 16GB Fury Beast DDR4 RGB 120GB ADATA SU650 SATA SSD 1TB Toshiba HDD 550W Seasonic Core GC-550 80+ Gold 6x ARGB Fans + Scythe Fuma 2

EDIT: The PSU is fairly new, so I'd prefer NOT to replace it if possible.

    Should I do water cooling?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:24 AM PST

Hi, I've been think of doing a custom hard loop water cooling for my cpu, mainly for the looks.

My cpu is a 5950x, I have a msi x570 gaming edge Wi-Fi motherboard and my case is a Corsair 5000x.

I was wondering how much would a cpu only custom loop cost and best ways to avoid any leaks. Also any insight on water cooling would be great.

Thanks for any help and advice :)

Rtx 3080ti works on my system but 3x8pin rtx 3080 wont display.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:30 AM PST

So I have no problem running my tuf rtx 3080ti daily and no problems even after long periods of gaming/heavy load.

BUT! I just got my Palit GameRock rtx 3080 that i bought 14 months ago. Well I thought I just want to try how does it compare to the 3080ti. What happens is: pc lights come on, cpu fan and case fans running normal and even the gpu lights on. But no display. I run 2 monitors both connected with displayport.

What I suspect is happening: my psu which has 1 splitted 6+2pin connecter(so basically 2x8pin) isnt enough to drive this gpu. I left the last power connector unconnected. Since I have previosly run gpu's with lacking power connectors I thought it would be fine if I just want to try booting it up and not giving it any load or gaming.

But still I find it weird not booting up since I can run 3080ti without problems. So that makes me suspect its something else? I also checked its properly connected to the mobo.

    Thanks for help in advance!

    Setup:

    Ryzen 5 3600

    2x8gb 3200mhz ddr4 ram

    RTX 3050 or RTX 2060 ?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 01:23 AM PST

Hi ,so basically right now with the super annoying prices which probably will continue for a while and with the age old saying a mans gotta game when a mans gotta game

My current GPU is GTX 1650 SUPER paired with ryzen 5 3600

And with the new RTX 3050 Desktop launch, its here very similar to RTX 2060 6GB price wise and wont pinch to get either (it would actually pinch with the inflated prices but you know what i mean)

Since both cards offer DLSS and Ray Tracing over my current GTX 1650 SUPER and are naturally a performace bumb upwards ,which should i get since i cant find actual comparisons on RTX 3050 Desktop and RTX 2060 6GB
