Android needs an app permission between allow 'access to all files' and 'allow access to media only'

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:40 AM PST

Something so the app can see anything in the downloads folder but not grant it permission to look anywhere.

This came about when I was looking for an .ogx file I downloaded. Android doesn't recognize it as media, so it wouldn't let VLC have access to it with default 'media only' access.

The only option for VLC to see the file was to grant VLC access to ALL files on my device, which is far too broad in my view considering VLC has had some past security issues ( https://us.blastingnews.com/tech/2017/05/hackers-are-using-your-vlc-media-player-to-control-your-device-001727751.html ).

I would happily allow it to see anything in downloads and/or all media but not past that.

Vodafone have pulled the s21 Ultra from sale because of the upcoming s22 launch....

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:51 AM PST

So i'm looking to pick up the s21 ultra because frankly imo the flagship mobile phone industry is in a pretty poor state. I just had to return a pixel 6 pro because it's buggy as shit and just not very good, and i can't find anything else that appeals (upgrading from a p30 pro).

Anyway, i went on the vodafone website (UK) to check if maybe their s21 ultra prices had dropped due to the upcoming s22 announcement and not only had they dropped, but they were non-existent. The phone has ceased to exist.

I used the online chat to query what was going on, because all the other models are there going back several years (including the s20 ultra), and they told me it had been pulled due to the upcoming announcement. I asked if it would be available again in future and was told that it wouldn't and that it would be replaced by the new s22 phones instead. Worth noting that it's just the ultra that's been pulled, not the s21+ or s21fe etc.

What kind of fuckery is this? Is this normal? Is this Samsung forcing compliance of retailers, or Vodafone themselves making the decision?

Given the underwhelming lack of hype for the s22 ultra i can't help but cynically think that this is a way of forcing people to buy the new under-performing models.

PSA: Samsung Galaxy's One UI 4 update still collects clipboard data and makes it worse somehow.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:05 PM PST

Samsung phones have always had a nasty habit of collecting your clipboard data without your permission, and you cannot disable this function: Disabling the clipboard using adb "hacking" does not actually stop Samsung from collecting your copies and pictures!

But One UI 4 adds another problem: It disables the Clipboard context option if you're using a keyboard other than the default Samsung keyboard. But it still collects your copies. This means you need to switch to Samsung keyboard and then clear the clipboard from there if you want to delete your copies.

This is just a warning to users who think the Clipboard functionality is gone as it's still there and it's harder than ever to clear it. So be careful if you ever find yourself copying sensitive information!

Will Android 12L really be a game changer in the android tablet scene?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:34 PM PST

I'm really hoping it is. I have an iPad and I'm trying to sell it. The OS is just too limited and I feel like it's trying to strangle me at every turn, no matter what i'm trying to do.

I am very hyped for the Samsung tablet lineup...the Tab S8 ultra looks set to be the definitive content consumption device.

(UPDATED) Which region will get Exynos 2200 or Snapdragon 8G1 for Galaxy S22

I based this from pulling the type of test firmware on Samsung's servers. B model is Exynos, E model is Snapdragon. Here's the list from my little investigation. Don't flame me if I'm wrong. Take it with a pinch of salt though.

    Exynos Regions:

    -South Asia (India, Pakistan etc)

    Snapdragon Regions:

    -North America

    -South America

-East Asia (China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong)

-South East Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore etc)

    -Oceania (Australia etc)
