Will there ever be a trade union for IT work in America? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:37 AM PST My father has worked within a pipe-fitting trade union for his entire life, and has told me it is easily his best career decision in his entire life. It has done so much for him and his family and I was wondering if the IT field would ever be unionized. I think it would be a great idea. just for background, im currently going to a tech school for IT work (taking A+ rn, gonna also hit networking and cloud computing) and while I enjoy learning from my professor, I think it would be great to go through a training program that he went through. His apprenticeship in the union was a 5 year program where you went to class 2 nights a week and worked with a company 5 days a week. This work was paid and even the 2 night classes they were paid for their time. They did not have to pay for tuition, just textbook and supplies. Most heavy tools were provided by the companies he worked for, but he had basic tools like screwdrivers and such. I dont know about you all, but it feels like this would help the IT field so much. Let young, excited people get into these tech jobs AS they learn. It would not only help their troubleshooting and communication skills, but it would also allow for more networking and collaboration, as younger apprentices to IT can tell instructors and industry experts what they need help with and how they absorb information. Just spitballing some thoughts about my dad's career and how I can use his knowledge in my life. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:04 PM PST Is this the part of any IT job? I feel like if my boss caught me Google simple IT questions, they would probably think about getting rid of me, right? [link] [comments] |
Interview For Helpdesk Analyst position Wednesday. Anything I should Know? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:58 PM PST Bit of background about me. I'm a college graduate and as of December 2021 I received my A+ certification since I'm trying to steer into IT I know the position involves analyzing tickets for trends but I'm not sure what the job actually entails or if I should know anything specific for the interview. As part of my studies / exams I have learned about ticket systems briefly [link] [comments] |
Is it normal to feel completely overwhelmed at your first IT job? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 12:48 PM PST I just started at level 1 help desk with an MSP. There was hardly any onboarding training besides some outdated videos on the ConnectWise ticketing system. I'm left to basically do nothing all day since I don't have any tickets yet. The manager has talked to me a handful of times. While he's very friendly, organization and communication in the office seem to be nonexistent. I worked for an hour restoring a laptop that no one else could figure out. Apparently the MyPhone app in windows had a corrupt installation and was causing BSODs. Fixed that, and that's the only real work I've done so far even though I'm in my second week. I'm supposed to be getting tickets this week, but haven't had any useful training of any kind. The documentation these people write is disastrous. I was looking through the tickets to see what an average one might look like, and in half the cases there was hardly anything documented. I know I can do the work, but I just feel totally lost since it seems like no one communicates. [link] [comments] |
Should I move to Oklahoma City for a new job and fresh start? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:59 PM PST I am currently living about 7 hours away from okc. I work for a small company making kinda bad pay. I am a helpdesk/system administrator. I have a job offer for a helpdesk teir 1 that is about 30% more pay. This job will open a lot more doors for me but i will have to move out and be on my own in a city I've never been to and I will be away from friends and family. Is this the right move? I'm only 21 and I have nothing really tieing me down. [link] [comments] |
I'm a 17 year old highschool Junior with Sec+ and CySA+ Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:16 AM PST Title is kind of self-explanatory. I'm really passionate about cybersecurity and compete in a national competition because of our performance each member of our team was offered an internship for college but I really want to be able to get a summer internship of some kind. I'm itching to get some real world experience. I wanna get my pentest, ccna, and oscp this year but I recently quit the fast food job I held since 14 so I could focus on school. I've looked high and low but the only internship I've found for highschoolers is an NSA one that I can't do because it's during school. Any ideas? Am I wasting my time with the certifications and should just focus on my eventual degree? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:52 PM PST Some background: I'm currently a senior at a University and I have one more semester left. For the longest time I was unsure on what "pathway" to pick out as an IT person, but I had the original goal as a network admin. I haven't much luck in terms of internships last summer and I haven't had any responses for my job search this fall so I've been thinking of just applying for a help desk position close to graduation as my fall back. Since this is my reality, I'm not exactly confident in my overall situation. I've now realized that IT project management is something I really wanna do instead of becoming a network admin. I'm not 100% sure on this best approach for reaching this goal. How should I lead myself into a more IT project management career for myself in the future? Should I still try to apply for help desk roles near graduation or look for something else? I have another opportunity to get a job as an integration tech (configure computers for companies needs) that would eventually lead me into technical solutions position. Would this be better for my long term goal? [link] [comments] |
Do not quit your job because of imposter syndrome! Posted: 02 Jan 2022 10:49 PM PST Thanks to this sub, like most of you I landed my first IT role at a pretty well known company. It has honestly helped me a lot to grow a passion for computers even more. The customer service sucks a bit, but hey I'm working with computers, networks, and tech in general. However, I always read here and there about imposter syndrome. Never thought much of it being a confident person myself. But man, is that shit REAL. My first week I was questioning everything I did, even the decision of taking this job despite it being what I wanted most! I often thought I maybe got way to over my head, and thought I was going to FAIL bad the minute training was over. I was so close to telling management: "thank you for the opportunity, but I'll be going back to my warehouse, safe, secure, low paying job." Thank my lucky stars I didn't. The team, my coworkers, and even management all made me felt very welcomed. They encouraged questions and not once ever seem annoyed or surprised at the stupidity of a question I had (i forgot how to open a txt file). Its crazy to believe I finally have a stepping stone into my dream job. The point of this post is to tell all of you suffering through IS in silent, or in public, to reach out and get engaged with your team/supervisors/coworkers. Do not think like I did and forsure do not quit if this is something you've been looking for your entire life. IT at least for me, was a whole new world of employment but I'm learning so much. IS is real and its normal to feel it. But do not let it consume you. [link] [comments] |
So trying to tighten up my resume a bit and I see VMware everywhere when job searching Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:03 PM PST I have some experience messing with Citrix in my current job, nothing too in depth and then I have a Virtual Box set up on my PC that I mess with Windows Server and windows 10 for domain stuff but I've never really messed with VMWare yet every job I seem to look at has it listed. How much crossover is there with VirtualBox and VMware? Would it be safe to list VMWare on my resume to get past filters while having knowledge primarily of Virtual Box, or would it be better to just list it as "Hypervisor experience: VirtualBox, Citrix, VMWare, etc" or something like that? Anyone work as NOC analyst/technician remotely???? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 01:18 PM PST Do these jobs actually exist and pay well? Im a IT Support tech and my goal is to work as NOC tech and hopefully move up to Network Engineer. Im in MI and tbh, NOC jobs aren't that many here compared to other states. Im looking for remote NOC roles. [link] [comments] |
Advice needed; My (less credentialed) coworker is making more than me Posted: 03 Jan 2022 03:54 PM PST Long story short, my coworker (who has no certs or degrees) is making several thousand dollars more than I am. I have my A+, Network+, and Security+, and a Bachelor's degree in IT. The only difference aside from his lack of credentials is he is male and I am female. I would like to think that's not a contributing factor though. Our job title is Senior PC Maintenance Technician, we do exactly the same things and share identical amounts of work experience. How would you handle this? Would you do anything? Talk to someone? Who? How would you broach the conversation? [link] [comments] |
Older Mid - Senior level Sys Admin burnt out and wanting to pursue software development Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:43 PM PST As the title suggests, I'm a 31 year old mid level (my official JD says senior but I don't feel that way) sys admin who is just burnt out. I did this stuff in the military, for big private companies, as a GS civilian, etc. and I just hate it. When I first got out of the military I was going to school for software development because I genuinely enjoy it but I kept getting promotions and offers that I ended up making just about 100k before I graduated and just dropped out because I though what's the point? SO, that being said - I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation as me and has jumped ship to the software side of the house? Maybe eCommerce since there's a need. As it stands now, I'm a pretty shitty developer and would definitely need to spend this year buckling down with it but is making the jump even worth it? I make decent money and my job is pretty cake. I just fucking. Hate. It. So again, if anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice at all - Id really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Is this email an annoyed response to a follow up I sent, or am I over thinking it? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:04 PM PST I interviewed for a help desk position back in November. I feel like the interview went great and he said he'll be making a determination on the position by Christmas and if someone didn't get the position he'll be reaching out either way to let them know. (I interviewed in November before Thanksgiving) He never reached out, so I reached out last Wednesday (the 29th) letting him know I'm still interested in the position and was just checking to see if there were anyway updates. And If the position as filled if there was any advice he would be able to give me going forward. His response is below: *Good evening, Due to circumstances requiring my attention in December, I have not made a decision on the position. I intend to wrap up my candidate reviews this month and offer the position to one of the candidates. As I mentioned in our interview, I will be in touch one way or the other. Thank you for reaching out, I am assuming you are still interested in being considered for the position.* Does he seem annoyed in his response or am I over thinking it? This was was my first time reaching out to him regarding an update (he told he would make the decision by Christmas so I felt like I gave lots of time especially after being interviewed before thanksgiving) [link] [comments] |
Is Identity and Access Management a good IT career to pursuit Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:58 PM PST I am facing a career choice being either as an IAM technical analyst (involving both technical configuration/administration and access/roles/entitlement analysis) in cyber security team or cloud engineer (AWS focused). Just wonder if IAM a good tech career to pursuit? I am a little worried that IAM might be too niche in long term. Many in advance for your responses and advice. [link] [comments] |
I Can't Afford To Work And I Can't Afford To Quit. Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:49 AM PST Greetings all, I was curious on what my current options are and how to handle my current employment situation. I am located in the rust belt of the USA and have 10 years of enterprise IT experience, and an AAS in IT under my belt as well. I have started for helpdesk, gone up to system admin, even tried a program analyst position once, and back to my normal jack of all trades position. I have a lengthy background of different positions at different companies, most of my tenures lasted a year to a year and six months. Most of this was due to me trying to climb the ladder, and increase my salary. For the most part that has worked, however I did learn of some of my toxic behavior that lead me to make a huge change in myself, however I am sure some smaller bridges were burnt along the way. Along the way I also was on 3 separate stints of unemployment, all within 18 months. This was an incredibly traumatic part of my life and career, and I have already worked through it via therapy/counseling. For the last 5 years, I have been at my current salary, which in my area, is actually like 10k more than the median household income for my state. Which I should be more than thankful for, however, I am the sole provider for my household. My wife is currently unable to work for a multitude of health reasons, however is not on disability. She is actively working on generating as much passive income as she can, however it is not as stable and consistent as my income obviously. With all that out of the way, I found employment after the traumatic 18 months I explained earlier, and have been with that employer for two years now. The employer is the best place I have ever worked, I have been able to heal, and grow my soft skills and interpersonal skills tenfold while working with them. There are growth opportunities within the company however most of them are now being certification/degree gated. At my point in my career, a Comptia certificate means nothing and provides nothing of value to my skills, or work. Not to mention I have 4 of them that are just recently expired. The issue I am running into now, is that because I live in the US, I have employer based health insurance. The insurance at my employer, is barely passible, and I knew this going into it. However now that I am actively paying for both HDHP and HSA contributions for the family, and other monetary obligations are back on my plate, I am going to be left with less than 300 dollars of disposable income a month. Did I mention I am the sole provider for my wife and daughter? I have been applying to various other positions in my area during this time as the writing has been on the wall for a while, however nothing has come of those opportunities. So my question is, do I bring this up to my current employer that I can't afford to work there, but also can't afford to not work there? (Obviously I would think this is a horrible idea). Secondly, how do I tell a prospective employer that the only reason I am leaving my current place is because having 300 dollars a month to live off of isn't really viable? Like literally thats one of the only reasons I need to leave. Because of this situation, I worry that if I take the next and only opportunity that provides me more money, I will be regressing in my progress of building my career and strengthening myself after my traumatic past. If anyone has read this far, I appreciate it, and wanted to ask, if anyone else has navigated a similar situation, and if so how did they escape this? I am open to honest truths, criticism, and anything that well help me progress past this hurdle in my life and career. [link] [comments] |
Looking for Good Certifications for Data Center and Advice Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:02 PM PST I really want to start working as a Data Center Tech but only have about 3 years of general IT help desk experience from over 4 years ago. I was wondering what kind of certifications I could get to land a Data Center Tech job or other options available. Any advice on how to do this is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Possible Case Study Questions for an Unqualified IT Manager Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:08 PM PST I've had five rounds with a small kitchenware manufacturer and I don't think they have gone too well but they keep passing me to the next round. They're looking for someone to manage future IT projects which I actually don't even know what they are besides looking to move to a bigger warehouse. I was a Linux / Windows admin and a Cisco engineer after that a long time ago but basically for the last few years, things have been setup before I show up and it's all a garbled mess in my head. I have to google/youtube everything I do for a refresher if there's something the tech team can't solve but that's usually enough to jog my memory to a solution. The reason for my question is I've already established that I don't know AWS, O365 or Oracle. What Case Study could they possibly ask me for an IT Manager position involving tech I don't know? How to ask for large salary without losing the whole offers completely? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:59 PM PST I have been interviewing with the same company for similar roles with two different recruiters one recruiter told me that 250 K OTE is possible but it will be hard to get. The other recruiter told me that the job pays 210 OTE. How do I ask for 250 K to the recruiter that told me 210 is what they offer without losing the offer completely? [link] [comments] |
IT - Helpdesk - How to go about a raise in healthcare Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:55 PM PST I've worked in hospital IT for about 3 years now and I have an associates degree. In this time I've gone from $15 to almost $20. I've gained a lot of skills during this time and recently I have scheduled my N+ & Sec+ as I wanted to delve into them and add more under my belt. I pass all the practice exams and my job will be paying for both of them. We have recently lost some technicians along with the actual help desk coordinator and I have assumed all of job roles they had along with the help of training new tech's. I also do all of inventory of PC equipment, orders, and participate w/ system analysts for meetings daily and will do updates on servers. I know the prior coordinator made almost 30$ an hour and had the same experience as me. He left and took a pay cut because he did not want to work in a stressful healthcare setting anymore. I'm debating on asking whether I can be promoted and/or raised into the previous workers role as I have taken on all of his daily tasks which involve many things above HelpDesk such as creating small scripts, etc. I plan on using this and comparing my current wage to the average in my area where I see regular HelpDesk techs being hired at 24-26$ an hour. I received a 60 cent raise 3 weeks ago but they didn't tell me about it, I just noticed it on my paycheck, and my yearly review was sped through because of a lot of our team coming down with COVID including myself so I did not advocate well at the time.. I do also have an offer from my side retail job of 24/hr if I would like to become a customer service manager. I used to work retail fulltime and quit to get into IT but I kept the retail job on saturdays and now they are trying hard to poach me back, and it's actually bothering me a bit that retail would pay almost 10k/yr more than my current job. I feel that mentioning the other job offer isn't the best idea and I should advocate based on market average. Thoughts? I've never asked for a raise before and my retail job's new manager said I'm one of the best workers he's seen in a customer service role and gave me a 4$/hr. raise regardless of whether I take the CSM position. Making a huge career change, I've gotten some certificates, need some advice on next steps Posted: 03 Jan 2022 01:01 PM PST I graduated with a Pharmacist degree in 2018. Due to the job market recently and the nature of the job itself, I decided I wanted to switch careers into IT. I've had some help from a close friend of mine to guide me to start. I'm more geared towards a Cloud Architect position at the moment. I got 2 AWS certifications so far, the Cloud Practitioner and the Solutions Architect Associate. I've also learned some basic Python and some other stuff like Agile, JSON, GitHub, etc. I've been applying for jobs for a couple months. I've gotten a couple interviews but the lack of experience means I haven't gotten a job offer yet. I'm motivated to learn and do more to land my first job in IT. Any recommendations on what to do to stand out more in job applications/interviews? I was thinking of picking up some AWS projects to complete and add to my resume. I also want to get better with Python and have a project done there to show off as well. Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Comptia A+ worth getting? Career change from construction (UK) Posted: 03 Jan 2022 02:34 PM PST Ok so I'm looking at a career change in the next few years from construction (my body is ruined at 32 y/o) I have basic high school diplomas but thats it, I have knowledge on hardware installations and other things not worth mentioning. Is the Comptia certs worth getting if I'm basically starting from scratch? I'd like to be able to get into the networking side of things but I'm clueless on where to start. It would all be self studying for now as I have to pay the mortgage inbetween. Thanks guys [link] [comments] |
Is there a IT certificate that should be taken, in place of the A+ ? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:28 PM PST Basically I have a lot of knowledge in IT when it comes to the basics and I have been studying for the A+ exam. The cert is really expensive for me right now and I feel a lot of the coursework is stuff I already know. Is there another certification that bypasses the A+ cert but still shows employers you have a solid understanding of IT basics, without actually having the A+ ? [link] [comments] |
Trying to move from Digital Marketing into IT. Need Advice Posted: 03 Jan 2022 12:38 PM PST Currently im a digital marketing analyst who specializes in paid search, SEO and paid social. After about 4 years into my career and working with great tech individuals at my job I realized I wanted to make that jump. Right now I'm researching the best way/job to integrate into tech. Is there any advice that would help my process. So far what caught my attention is the cloud space and security. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Amazon Cloud Support Associate Interview, Your Experiences? Posted: 03 Jan 2022 08:07 PM PST I know this may have been asked before, but I am curious of anyone who works or has worked this position and their opinion/advice I am a senior in college MGIS Major I applied to this position because the description sounded awesome, but after the first assessment I realized I know barely anything about AWS and some of the more technical concepts. After I guessed through the technical assessment they have invited me for a next round interview surprisingly. I am a great communicator and that's gotten me a lot of great opportunities but I am not a very technical person my experience programming and with some softwares is very novice if that, but this is the most technical position I have been offered in comparison to a BA position or some consulting roles Would grinding as a CSA for a while be a great way to become a Solutions Architect or Cloud Consultant?
