    Simple Questions - January 03, 2022

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 05:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Is it just me, or are the PCPartpicker filters very lackluster and outdated?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 09:49 AM PST

I've been regularly helping out people with their builds over on r/buildapcforme, but I'm very frustrated by the lackluster options on PCpartpicker.com:

    - Lots of parts have no filter for RGB

    - Lots of wrong & bugged prices. Especially for GPUs barely any prices are correct or correctly in stock. Also a lot of better priced GPUs on Newegg are not listed at all, and not even supported by 'custom part', you have manually add in all the details.

    - SSD filters are the worst. No TLC/QLC filter, no PCI generation 3.0/4.0 filters, no sustained write/IOPS stats

    - No fan hub options

    - No Cable options like cablemod or fan splitters e.d.

I'm probably missing some other stuff, but the endeadors have been pretty annoying.

Here's an example of a Dutch comparison-website that lists SSDs: https://imgur.com/dQptYno

Would love to hear how you guys have experienced PCpartpicker. Any other issues I will edit in.

Is 1TB of storage enough for gaming?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 05:08 AM PST

For me, that sounds huge but for some reason, I see alot of people going for 2TB or sometimes even 4TB, I wouldn't say I have alot of games on PC but the ones I have take up alot of space, I currently have a 500GB Laptop and ever since I installed GTA V, I barely had any space remaining, so I bought a 256GB SD card but it still doesn't feel like much, especially since I have alot of other thing on my PC like images, or other software that take up space.

So what should I go for, is 1TB enough or do I need at least 2TB?

Built a PC for my younger bro (14), whachu all think?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:54 AM PST

    Here's the PC partpicker - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Gzj3z7

Spent almost 1200$ on this (pretty big money where I live, especially for a mid class worker)Did it myself since out parents are too conservative and wouldn't buy him anything good (bought him a crappy 500$ prebuilt that can't even run Fortnite well)Also just wanted to make him happy and a bit more motivated to build his future and not just be depressed all the time.Anyway, the computer has already been built, my second ever build, put my heart and could into it, really wish I could give y'all a photo but it's already out of town.He wanted some RGB and stuff but it's already very expensive as is. All the more motivation for him to do bigger and better when he grows up =DAnyway, before I ramble on for too long, just wanted a piece of mind from y'all for the time I build anything else in the future.

P.S. Yes, I turned on XMP before I gave it to him =)

P.P.S I plan to buy him a 144Hz 1440p Monitor, do you think it's realistic for this pc to handle that?

Edit: added proper prices to PCpartpicker

    Could I upgrade my Ryzen 5 3600 to a 5600x while having a Radeon Rx 580 8Gb?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:50 AM PST

Hello everyone. I'm still fairly new to having a PC and I learn stuff about my current one constantly, but still a noob. I was just curious about upgrading my current CPU to a newer one but holding out on the gpu till the market gets a little better. Is that something you can do? Or would you even want to do that? Thanks for any answers!

    Open Case Computers.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:03 AM PST

I noticed people buying expensive cases with intricate fan set up with air flow management. But every PC I've ever owned I just open up the case and let the heat out. One PC is going to hit the 10 year mark and another i just upgraded the CPU is going to hit the 8 year mark. I've always thought heat is way more harmful then dust. Since I just vacuum everything randomly whenever cause it only takes 20-30s.

So what's all the fuss about regarding PC cases?

Also, I always lay my computers down flat. It just makes sense to me since all the components are all plugged in the same way. When you stand them up it just seems unnatural.

    Upgrading for around 300$

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 01:26 AM PST

I'm currently running an ancient I5-4670 along with my 980 TI. I intend on keeping my GPU but would like to upgrade mobo + CPU + ram for 300-350 USD. Was looking at H410M + 11400F + 16 GB DDR4, but unsure if it's worth waiting for the 12400F and H610/H660 mobos. The PC will be used both as a workstation and for playing stuff like Elden Ring.

Any recommendations on how to spend my money wisely?

    Poor framerate with RTX 3070

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:16 PM PST

I am having problems with my framerate when playing games on high settings. However, I don't think it should be a problem after all my GPU is an RTX 3070. I'll be running at 60 fps then I'll suddenly drop to 0 fps.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics driver and Using "Optimal setting" by using Geforce experience and I still have my frames drop or just have inconsistent frames.

Is my CPU not powerful enough to work with my GPU?

I have tried to look for programs to monitor GPU and CPU usage but they seem to have yearly subscriptions. The task manager just doesn't have a wide enough time frame. Are there any programs I can use to see the performance better?

    Specs:

    RTX 3070 GPU

    i5-9400 CPU

    32gb of ram

    Mom's getting a new PC.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:49 PM PST

I hadn't been to my mothers house in some time. She mostly comes out by me and my sister since she has two little ones and it's a pain to pack them up and drag them to grandmas. Over the holidays I made it over to my moms and saw her work from home set-up. I had given her a 27" 1440p monitor , a mechanical keyboard and a proper mouse. She always said she worked off her laptop and I had assumed that her job had given her one. Imagine my horror when I discover that she's using a laptop with a 5300U CPU 8gb ram and a 5400rpm HDD.

Needless to say I couldn't let this go on. I decided to build her a little machine so that it wont be so painful for me when I go over :) I'm going over this Sunday for dinner and plan to hook it up then.

I already owned the case, fans, and ram. All the other parts were on sale at the time. If I was trying to get the max out of the parts I would get better ram and CPU cooler so I could do a slight overclock. I got the 600w psu incase I want to slot in a video card down the road if this market ever clears up

M.2 NVME SSD was unplugged during use, now BIOS won't even recognize it

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:18 PM PST

Bought an M.2 SSD, I didn't have a standoff screw so i sort of just jerry-rigged the install and it undid itself so the SSD became erect while in use, causing my PC to crash. So I bought the standoff screws and reinstalled it, now my BIOS won't even recognize it.

Im not sure what exactly the issue is like is the port on the mobo done for or is the SSD corrupt? and if the SSD is corrupt, is there any way I can salvage it?

    Graphics card upgrade

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 07:07 PM PST

Alright just wondering if anyone could help me decide on this I currently have a I5-10400 build with a Rx 580 8gb but looking to upgrade and get the most out of a new system. I'm thinking on a Rx 6600 xt seems good and way more powerful than what I have now but wondering if there's something more compatible and get me more bang for the buck.

Does B550M AORUS ELITE (rev. 1.x) disable SATA ports if you use M.2?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 11:39 PM PST

I have 4 SATA SSDs connected to SATA ports but want to get an M.2 SSD.

So will the M.2 SSD disable any of the SATA ports?

I checked the manual here https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550M-AORUS-ELITE-rev-1x/support#support-manual and it didn't say anything that?

Is this is a decent build for a reasonable price?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 11:14 PM PST

It's my first time buying a pc for gaming, I want to play on high 1080p settings for the most part and Im okay for the time being to lower the settings on demanding games (ex RDR2). I dont want to build it myself, because of the fear of bricking it. So I managed to find a supplier that builds the pc I pick for a fee. After researching performance a little bit, I picked the following parts.

    • MSI B550M Pro
    • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
    • Geforce RTX 2060 Super
    • Corsair Vengeance 16gb (2x 8gb) 3200mhz
    • Kingston 500gb SSD
    • Cooler Master MasterAir MA410P
    • NZXT H510 Case
    • Corsair RM650x PSU
    • Some No-namebrand rgb strips
    • Windows 10 Home

Total price is €1560 (including building fee)

I dont really have any experiences with the Kingston storage, but on the website I used upgrading it to a 1TB Samsung SSD costs like €50 more than if I were to buy and install one myself. From what I researched putting in a storage card isnt that hard to do, even with no experience. So Im willing to upgrade the storage in the near future. With the current gpu market, I had a tough time figuring what is worth it.

If you have any feedback on the points mentioned, its well appreciated!

    Do I need this standoff?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 11:11 PM PST

Hello! I just posted a few minutes ago about a different issue. My standoff doesnt fit into the hole I need it into. It's an atx board but one of its screw holes are for a micro atx board. It's the one circle in the images below. Do I really need it since theres 2 on either side already plus the gpu will be screwed in?

Rigid/ robust PC case for travel

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 06:12 PM PST

    Hey folks

Looking for recommendations, I travel for work for long periods and fly with my gaming PC. I have an enthoo evolv that I pack in a large rigid suitcase (yes, I carry-on my GPU and drives).

Im concerned about how robust the pc case is. Looking fir recommendations. Weight isn't too big of an issue as long as its not outrageous.

I understand its a risk regardless but figured Id proactively mitigate what I could to protect against the "throwers" (lol baggage handlers.

    Any pointers are much appreciated

    Too much pressure on CPU?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 11:10 PM PST

    Hello!

I'm working on a caseswap for my brother's Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF. However, in the new case, there's a gap where the standoffs would usually go in the case. So instead, I just used some nuts to attach the CPU cooler. I'm worried that too much pressure is being put on the CPU though, as the nuts are screwed on extremely tightly. Could it crush the CPU and damage the pins? (3rd gen Intel i5)

    Any help is appreciated!

    Size down the monitor?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 10:58 PM PST

I have a 2k Samsung 32in curved gaming monitor that has been great for the past few years. PC wise I have a 1070ti and an I5 cpu with 32GB RAM.

More recently I've noticed distant objects in games, especially vegetation, are very flickery and pixelated and I cannot unsee it.

I have updated all drivers and my render settings in games have pretty high anti aliasing and render scale is set to 100%.

Looking at a PC screenshot I took on my iPhone screen I do not see these black fuzzy discrepancies so I assume it's my PC monitor?

Should I scale down the size of the monitor to fix this? Is there any other solution? Or am I just being too nit picky?
