Recommendations for affordable Shielded Jacks/Keystones for Cat 6A

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:02 AM PST

So, I got started with doing some networking in the house running shielded 6A everywhere and while I love the ease of working with tool-less connectors, paying $30 for a 6-pack of keystones/jacks is NOT as enjoyable.

So far, the best I've found is this and this... still pretty pricy.

    Any better suggestions?

Mesh vs AP vs Smoke Signals

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 07:12 PM PST

    Hey all,

Okay, a bunch of reading in and I am a bit torn.

The situation: spaced out ranch w/ basement. Gig interwebz. Whole house is wired.

I know Ubiquiti seems to be a favorite here but it just seems like more than I need and the price point is around 1k for a 3ap setup with a DM Pro.

Is a mesh kit with wired backhaul really what I am looking for? Something around a Eero Pro 6?

    Thanks for input.

    Router directly to patch panel

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:27 AM PST

    Hi guys,

Quick question: i'lol move to my new house in the next week and every room is equipped with LAN. I have a patch panel in the basement. For now, I'll only need LAN connection in two rooms. My router has 4 LAN ports. Is it possible to connect the patch panel directly to the router since I'll only need to populate two LAN ports on the patch panel? I would like to save on the switch since I do not need an active LAN connection in every room.

    Thank you!

How to configure security in single linux host with two different networks?

How to configure security in single linux host with two different networks?

I want to set up a webserver wich is a Debian 11 OS with network connections as shown in the pic. The webserver has two NICs with a different network each. The 192.x.x.x is connected to router/Firewall. The Webserver will be exposed to internet via port forwarding in the router. Pfsense will have security rules for the internet traffic.

The other NIC has 172.x.x.x network and connnected to a switch which connects all the database/data servers/backup/monitoring/Misc systems , these all are on the same 172 subnet. I have set up separate default gateways for each network.

I want to set up the hardest security between the two NIC networks,so even if there is an attack that has passed the firewall security, nobody should get to know about the other network that the host has. The systems past the switch need to be really safe and secured (only the data base system will be able to talk to the web server on request). I do not want another layer of firewall after the switch. I dont have vlans for these systems thinking intervlan communication would slow down the communication( very particular about speed and latency among these systems ) .Please guide me with leads/ steps , what are all the things I need to do. I am very new network and linux ,I dont know what topics I should search for to learn and configure .

    TP-Link data usage erased

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:42 AM PST

I recently got my first wireless router (as opposed to using my ISPs), the TP-Link Archer AX73. The app (just the app, for some reason the actual software itself doesn't display this information) basically gives you a "Total Traffic Usage" number per device, which I've been having a blast tracking. It's dumb, but I enjoy checking the data usage of each device at the end of the day.

Last night the router had a firmware update, and all the tracking has been reset to 0. Is there any way to prevent this going forward, or is it par for the course with this kind of router? I looked around, and it seems like the only way to track network usage accurately would be to either install a custom firmware on the router or set-up a device that runs 24/7 in order to track. I'd rather not do either, so if there any other way to simply track the data usage of devices on my network, or simply avoid the router resetting the counts to 0?

    link agragation question

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:40 AM PST

    hello all,

i have a router with the ability to aggregate 2 ports for faster speeds

i also have a 16 port netgear switch

i also have a synology nas with the ability for aggregation of 2 ports into 1

question, what is a better all around setup, am i thinking about this correct, is there something im missing, THX in advance

aggregate the router to 2 ports on the 16 port switch then aggregate the nas to 2 ports on the switch as well (this will use 4 ports and the rest of the stuff i plug into the switch will have aggregation speed to the router)

or aggregate the 2 ports on the router to the 2 aggregated ports on the synology THEN just plug the switch into a single router port.

    Modem and router recommendations?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:30 AM PST

Looks like I have 60 connected devices.

    1200mbps plan.

Ps5, and streaming movies all day long while my roommate games on his PC and Xbox and girlfriend plays on her phone all at once.

Most are smart home lightbulbs on 2.4 ghz.

I have 6 Ethernet devices I plug into the router - can use a switch but prefer not to.

What modem and router do you recommend for my needs?

ALSO - what is wifi 6 or mesh wifi?

    Home network with 2 routers

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:13 AM PST

    Hello,

In my home i have 2 routers (Asus) and the ISP modem (that also have wifi)

So, i have both of the router connected to the ISP modem, but in way i have 3 diferent subnet's ( for exemple 192.168.1.xxx / 192.168.2.xxx / 192.168.3.xxx).

The if i'm connectet to the number 2 i can access to the 1 and the same thing with the number 3.

My goal here is to keep the 3 diferent subnet's but i want have access to all the networks.

Here comes the main problem, i have a ISP TV box (IPTV) connected to the router number 3 (Both asus routers have support for IPTV) so if i connect the router 3 to the router 2 the ISP box doesnt work.

I tried to change the router to AP but if i do that i also lose the ISP tv box features.

    Any help?

Best way to connect two phone cables

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:20 AM PST

So as the title says - what is the best way to connect two phone wires? One wire is coming from the telecom junction box to my house, but it is not long enough to come to my vdsl2 router. Splicing the wires without soldering, splicing the wires with soldering or wiring one cable to a socket and adding a phone connector to the other cable and connecting them together? Also, can I use double shielded s/ftp cat7 cable as incoming dsl cable (2 wires of it)?

    Help troubleshoot router speed issue?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:25 AM PST

    Here's the problem: 1,200mbps plan

Netgear cm1000 modem (speeds up to 1,000mbps) (Will be getting free Xfinity modem today/ tomorrow that supports the 1,200 or more)

Netgear nighthawk 6700 v3 router. (Supports up to 1,700 mbps)

(Both netgear products designed to work with Xfinity / Comcast I believe)

Had an Xfinity tech in my house testing the other day. (Had an 800 mbps plan the other day before upgrading- tech hardwire Ethernet tested speed at the full 800mbps or so at the modem.)

The tech hardwire Ethernet tested the speed at the router maxxing at 200-250mbps. He said there was an issue with the router, but couldn't pinpoint what since it's not Xfinity equipment.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max is 2x2wifi and can see 600mbps max or so. Speed tests have only ever shown 200mbps max.

My MacBook Pro can see 1,300mbps max. It has only ever seen 200-250mbps on the speed tests, hardwired or wifi tested. Just like the Xfinity technician. I should be seeing more then 200-250.

So that's the problem… what can I do to fix it?

————————- Troubleshooting I have already done:

Tested the speeds while only MacBook was the ONLY device connected to my network taking up bandwidth. (As I have over 20 smart bulbs connected to network) NO CHANGE.

Xfinity technician came to home. Tested modem and router. Said router was the issue.

I updated firmware on router. No change.

I factory reset router. No change.

I called netgear support. They tried changing the channels wifi Admin settings and adjusting bandwidth. No change.

Netgear sent me a replacement router. Brand new. I swapped it out. NO CHANGE! I'm still capped around 250mbps while testing speeds..

Now I'm starting to think there's some modem settings I need to change if possible..??? Please help.

Im ready to just use the rented Xfinity modem they offer- and buy a new hefty router to use In AP mode where I can split my frequencies 2.4 and 5ghz. Send me your router recommendations to use in AP mode with Xfinity modem please.

how can i block TELEGRAM from my router? is there any specific URL?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:56 AM PST

local teens are getting in to trouble using the service for sexting. my nephew needs to have a serious talk with his parents, but they are away and i dont have any authority or experience to do that kind of stuff, so i figure i should just block it in the meantime

so, in addition to blocking TELEGRAM,ORG i also blocked some ther weird domains i got out of the DNS logs of the router, that i assumed are related to the service like

    kws1-1.web.telegram.org, kws4-1.web.telegram.org , zws1.web.telegram.org, kws3-1.web.telegram.org,

but i only managed to block the web version by blacklisting those. i supose telegram doesnt use a webpage for its service, so what can i do?

hope anyone can help, thanks in advance

    Huawei 5G CPE Pro (2?)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:07 AM PST

    Hi.

I'm trying to help a colleague who has either the 5G CPE Pro or the Pro2 (don't think they're sure which they have). He's on Three in the UK - gets 5G 500 Mbps d/l 5 u/l

A company who provide some software he's trying to use on his phone have reported that his iPhone is connecting to one of two IP ranges - "192.168.10.XXX" / "192.168.12.XXX" both of which at times his phone tries to bind the connection but fails to do.

Anyone know what the default range should be (very unlikely this has been changed by my colleague) and whether the CPEs offer different address ranges based on whether you're on 2.4 or 5Ghz Wifi?

I'm the other end of the country so support is quite difficult!

    Thanks.

Can someone help me improve the wifi signal to my computer?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:42 AM PST

Hi there, I recently moved into a 850 sq ft apartment where my router and PC are on opposite ends of the unit, separated by a wall. Next to the wifi, I get speeds up to 250 Mbsp with a signal strength of -20-45 dBm. At my PC I only get about 35 Mbsp at -65 dBm. The way my apartment is laid out, it would be impractical to run an Ethernet cable to my PC. My main uses are gaming and steaming. Here's the gear I have now.

Router: Netgear AC1600 Adapter: TP Link N900 PCI card

Should I upgrade either (or both) of these, or try something else? I want to stay below $200 if possible, unless it's REALLY worth it to spend more. Thanks!

Edit: I tested the signal using my phone placed next to my PC and was able to get 200 Mbsp, so I guess my router is fine. So should I upgrade my adapter or consider something like a mesh system?

New Home with Ethernet Ports - Which switch to get?

New Home with Ethernet Ports - Which switch to get?

Hello! I recently moved into a newly constructed home that was setup with ethernet ports/jacks in 4 different rooms. The image should show the scenario perfectly. Unfortunately they end/exit on the exterior of the house on the opposite side of where the modem/router was installed.

    https://preview.redd.it/p6ux25isqud81.png?width=832&format=png&auto=webp&s=31e373d6d8ce0f7491120e6068eab509026f7494

The plan is to connect the modem/router to ethernet port/jack #1 and use a switch to connect ethernet cable #1 to the other ethernet cables. I also have to add the RJ45 connectors to the end of the ethernet cables. Questions:

Option 1) Should I leave the cables where they are and purchase an outdoor switch? If so, what switch would you recommend? I'm hoping to not spend hundreds of dollars.

Option 2) OR should I cut the cables short (10 feet or so) in the attic and purchase an indoor switch? If so, how do I cut the cables and what switch would you recommend?

Option 3) Is there a better way to do this?

Do I have to have my ISP come replace my coaxial cable if it's too short or can I just buy a longer one?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:24 AM PST

I have Armstrong for my ISP. Just internet and they require you use their provided modem/router. The problem is when they installed it they only put in a short 4 ft coaxial cable (the cable that connects to the wall and into the modem). I had to arrange my furniture around this stupidity for months which included putting my dresser in front of my closet. But I'm trying to rearrange the furniture to better fit my home office (and not block half my closet) and that would require putting my bed in front of the coax wall outlet (don't know if that's what it's actually called). I would need the cord to be at least 8.5 ft to reach where I need to put it (yes that accounts for the stiffness of the coax cord). I've never had this issue before because my previous provider put in a super long cord and the one before that the cord could be pulled from the wall to be longer. Armstrong has a monopoly in this area since the only other option in this area is awful and isn't fast enough for a WFH job so I just got the cord the installer deemed to bring with them (I did ask for a longer cord at install they said they didn't bring any longer) So do I have to call and hope they will actually bring a longer coax cord or can I just buy a longer one? I'm worried about affecting my speed switching cords so does it matter what cord I buy (aside from length)? Is there an approved coaxial cord list? (like how providers usually have an approved modem list)

I came across this cool article on loadbalancing DNS using NGINX but it made me wonder

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:15 AM PST

In my setup I have four DNS servers. Two recursive and two authoritative. All clients point at the Recursiveservers, and each Recursive server has a stub zone pointing at both Authoritative server. Both Recursive are Unbound and both Authoritative are NSD.

This article shows how you could use NGINX to load balance DNS. Which would totally work for my two Recursive DNS servers. Because traffic goes like Client > Unbound servers > Authoritative. But how would / could you load balance the Authoritative piece? I'm wondering if there is a way to also tell it that if it gets a certain fqdn, to proxy it rather than pass it through to DNS.

internet goes down occasionally, no warning. resetting WAN / unplug /DHCP renewal fixes. FiOS says its not their issue. how do I troubleshoot?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:06 AM PST

So just after Xmas I replaced my trusty AC3100 with a new AX86U. come to realize since I have separate 2.4/5ghz bands / ssid AX doesnt net me much faster speed with my apple devices. return it, and go back to AC3100.

I start seeing that at various times during the day (never noticed it at night) that pages would just stop loading - couldnt reach google, etc. Id check the router and it would say Disconnected.

ok. so I had a PiHole which would 'lock up' checked with r/pihole and they Said its the net going down not the pihole causing issues. I took the pihole out of the loop, set the DNS as Verizon DNS servers and still had an issue. I called Fios, they tested everything, said it was fine. while I was on the call, the internet drops out. She says 'nope, must be your side, ours is working fine.' UGH. Ok. one thing I did notice was the AC3100 has the RJ45 port up, but the AX had it down, so I had to twist the cable 180 a couple times are I swapped them. I pulled out 6" or so, and put on a new connector.

Things have worked perfectly for 7 days... I was JUST starting to think it was that. annnnnnnnnnnnd

Went out again this AM. no logs in the Asus system.

there is some weirdness with dates of the logs though, but not in the past week:

Ive had this exact system running for ~6 years since I moved here, I never really had any issues, and over the last month I feel like ive checked everything and nothing is 'wrong' but I get these drop outs that are immediately resolved by unplugging the wan cable, or doing a DHCP renewal for the WAN. Ive reset the ONT, the router ended up being reset to factory because I used a suggested password that got overwritten when I installed the new router, so that was fun.

since the time keeps going nutty should I do another factory reset on the router?? Im running Merlin 386.4.

Im not an expert but Ive been running my own home network for more than 20 years.

I ran pingplotter for the last 7 days, here's the plot.

Will replacing my router improve coverage and stability

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:03 AM PST

    Hi,

The current router i have is the Hitron CGNV4 router, it's got 5GHz and ac mode but the signal has random deadspots (not even that far away) and sometimes will just stall and become unusable wirelessly.

Is it worth upgrading to a better router? i was thinking a non-isp router with some antennas might help out, also since 6 of us live here maybe it's struggling to handle the traffic.

    I was looking at the tp-link ax1500.

    ISP Coax Splitter

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:04 AM PST

Perhaps a very basic question but I would like to double check and also hear recommendations. I have an ISP coax cable in my living room which I would like to split to other rooms to place a modem for TV in each room. This one connection needs to be split into 4 different rooms so I need a 1-in-4-out splitter. Can anyone recommend a good brand please?
