Windows alternative to MacBook Pro 13 inch 2020 M1

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 08:06 PM PST

I'm currently using the above MacBook model and … I just do not vibe with the Mac way of doing things. Are there any comparable 13 inch windows laptops you would recommend that are:

    • pretty/aesthetically pleasing
    • mostly quiet
    • at least 16 gb ram
    • will mostly be used for document editing, analysing data in R (nothing huge), Photoshop, light games

Laptop for School Multi-tasking and for Running Valorant (40k-50k PHP)

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 09:22 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • 40k-50k PHP

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    • I'm willing to buy a used laptop or 2nd hand laptop

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • As much as possible, a laptop with good battery health/life and It would be nice if I can multi-task with it. Good performance laptop around my budget would make me satisfied. Other than that, build quality doesn't matter.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • I want a laptop weighing from 1.5 to 2.5kg. Aside from that, the thinness doesn't matter.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • Yes, just a little video editing and photo editing, more on gaming, but I'm not into GPU intensive games. The games I play currently are Valorant, Apex Legends, CS:GO, Minecraft, LoL, Genshin Impact, Team Fortress 2.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • I play Valorant the most. I want to get atleast around 160-200 FPS at the LOWEST settings in Valorant. Other than Valorant, there are also other games I play that I listed above.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • None, anything will do.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I'm planning to buy a new gaming laptop. I'm switching from PC to laptop since I will casually be needing a laptop to bring to university. I'm eying the Lenovo Legion 5 and Asus Zephyrus G14, that attracted me in particular. I'm still not entirely sure though. I would still love to make sure to know more about what I'll buy. If you have any laptop brand and model in mind, please recommend configurations too. Thanks in advance!

Need a College/Everyday laptop on a budget, <400 USD, buying from America. Thanks

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 06:53 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
less than 400 USD, buying from the US.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
yes, but I haven't had great experiences with refurbished computers.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance first, then build quality for sure. Battery, then form factor (I don't care if its 2-in-1 or touchscreen)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I prefer a middle ground. Don't want a brick, of course, but I don't want something so thin it feels like a chip (macbook air). I will likely carry the laptop in a backpack, so it doesn't need to be super light, but again, not a brick
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Somewhere between 15 and 17 in, give or take. not too picky, but preferable bigger than a typical chromebook screen.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will likely be running CAD, and any other software needed for an Electrical Engineering degree. Also, sometimes Ableton Live, for music production. and occasionally, casual gaming (minecraft mostly)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
minecraft (crossplay with my nephew's ps4 if that matters). just vanilla minecraft bedrock, basic settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
i would prefer a good build quality first and foremost (metal, preferably). I don't require touchscreen, but its a plus. I would like a disc drive, and several usb ports (also an sd slot wouldnt hurt). I don't really care about having a fingerprint reader.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
this laptop will be replacing my dying Dell Inspiron 15. I would prefer at least 100 gb of storage. I don't know much about computers, so any advice/tips/info would be greatly appreciated. this computer will mostly be used for Engineering College, plus some casual gaming/music editing. Thanks guys

    Laptop for Uni/College, Australia, $1200-1500AUD

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 12:20 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking for a portable laptop that I can take to uni/college. I'm not interested in gaming or running any intense programs (I want the fans to be as quiet as possible because I will be spending a lot of time in the library). I have heard good things about Surface laptops - would they fit the requirements below?

    Thanks so much!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Australia. $1200-$1500 AUD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Battery must be good. Would prefer the performance to be good as well (can handle many tabs open at once), as long as the fans are not too loud or overheat easily - quiet fans are a must. Don't care for build quality or any notebook/ultrabook/2-in-1, prefer just the traditional laptop!
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Pretty important, I would prefer the laptop to be light and thin so that it's highly portable.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.I'd prefer anything above 13 inches. Preferably 14 or 15 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Mostly for office and school work. No gaming, and no specific, intensive programs, but want to be able to have a lot of tabs open.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Keyboard that will allow me to type as fast as I can & a good trackpad. Don't need a touchscreen.

    Acer Nitro 5 5800h 3060 95W TDP, 256 SSD 1TB HDD.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 12:08 AM PST

I am thinking of buying this laptop and extending the ssd by an additional 1TB.

This is going to cost me an equivalent of $1326 in my currency (along with cost of 1tb ssd)

    1. Is this deal worth?
    2. Can I remove the hdd and extend to 1TB sdd (I want a light laptop. Hence thinking of this change)
    3. I have seen other laptops with similar configuration, but most of them are around $1700. So I am thinking of going with acer nitro with the above changes.

Are these changes possible and will it be worth the hassle.

I am coming from a Lenovo y510p which I brought in 2014. Its running fine for day today activities, but I want to exchange it while its still worth something (right now I am getting 165$ exchange discount for my y510p)

    Please advise.

    Nitro 5 3060/Ryzen 7 or Blade 15" w/3060?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 11:09 PM PST

While I could afford to finance both, I don't know which one to get. They both have basically the same specs, but the lightness of the Blade seems very appealing to me.

Im a student and while I spend WAY more time studying than gaming, when theres break I play alot of Rust, Terraria and cs. What would you recommend?

Laptop for college and playing Genshin

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 02:10 PM PST

For context, I know basically nothing about computers. I have a 2017 MacBook Air which cannot run even Google Chrome without lag. I appreciate any suggestions!

I'm also an artist, I don't know if there is a way for me to use a stylus to create art with a touch screen laptop but that would be nice if possible. I'm used to using an iPad.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 at most, but I'm willing to spend more if the laptop is perfect for me

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm not sure what this means, but I prioritize performance and build quality over battery life since I'll be able to charge it often if needed. A touch screen would be nice too, if I can use it for digital art.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Important, I need to be able to carry it around campus. I'm used to the thinness of a MacBook Air but it doesn't need to be that thin.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

About the size of a MacBook Air, bit smaller would be nice.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming: Genshin Impact

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Genshin Impact, I'd like to play on med/high settings and 60FPS (not absolutely necessary) without issues.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen would be nice, but not a priority.

    Thank you for any help!!

Is this Zephyrus G15 configuration a good deal? Is there a better alternative?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 01:07 PM PST

I've been looking to pick up a G15, which has proven to be quite difficult as stock is low. I've read that the model with the 3070 is the best value and the most worth purchasing.

Best Buy does have the 3080 configuration for $300 off ($1899 down from $2199). I am not sure how this compares to the price of the 3070 model at release. Link Here for those interested

Is this worth pulling the trigger on? Is there a better laptop that can be found a little closer to the $1500 price point?

Just looking for a generally good quality laptop for a middle schooler. She will mostly be using it to chat with friends and watch YouTube as well as doing schoolwork. I would prefer something that comes with Microsoft word if possible. She likes to draw so something that she can explore digital art on would be great as well.

Thinking of buying this version of the IdeaPad gaming laptop for 950. Is there any better options to consider before I buy?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 11:57 AM PST

    https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Gaming-7-4800H-Keyboard/dp/B08T2291N3/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=1S3E26W5VWJXK&keywords=ideapad+gaming+3&qid=1638734017&sprefix=ideapa%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-5

I don't need the highest graphics, just something that can game for fun while also having 16gb ram to help with music production programs. Laptop durability is also a big concern of mine, as well as having a headphone jack on the left side just out of convenience.

I want to keep my total budget around the $1000 range with tax included so 950 before tax is about the highest I can go.

Laptop to run basic games on a budget

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 03:36 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

600USD a little over or under is ok

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance matters the most, build quality and battery life are less important to me

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, I also draw so I save a lot of image files but idk how important that is

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, GMod, similar games. Medium settings would be good but low is fine too

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nope

Cheapest laptop for playing skyrim with mods

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 03:34 PM PST

I want a laptop that can run skyrim with some mods. I cant get mods on console so I want a laptop that I can play modded skyrim on but I dont want to spend too much. Is it possible to spend $500 or under and have it run as nice as a console would?

    HP Victus 16 i5 11400H rtx3060 VS Lenovo Legion5 Ryzen 5 5600H rtx3060

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 02:49 PM PST

I wonder i anyone can point out the best one? They are both for the same price: 1099 euro.

I have to get a second ssd for both. The legion 5 has only 8GB RAM vs the victus with 16GB.

my biggest worry is the i5 vs the Ryzen 5. Have seen reviews leaning for both sides.
