WARNING!!! This is a message for life long windows user thinking of switching to macbook!!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:54 AM PST

I am returning my macbook air M1 after 3 weeks of owning it. Me using Microsoft word yesterday was the last straw.

    1. the "remove/add space after paragraph button doesn't exist" Like when I click paragraph on word, that button just isn't there.
    2. Copy and Pasting is weird AF. If you want to paste special like unformated or something it takes you to a weird screen with options and each one i click is never right! On windows you can just hover over the paste function and see which option you want before clicking!
    3. I have NO IDEA where i saved my finance notes last night. My bf and i searched and could not find them in my files

Keep in mind I ONLY use my laptop for school work, research purposes, and the occasional YouTube video. I just want something that is easy and works! Its is just too different to a non computer expert. I just wanna be happy and use Microsoft office the same way i do on windows. Im so disappointed in the macbook :(((

Im returning my macbook and buying a windows computer. If you have anxiety and are too busy to learn a whole new software, stick with windows!

Lightweight laptop for Writer, Please Help!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:20 PM PST

    Howdy,

I'd like a laptop with these attributes:

    -lightweight

    -quiet and cool

    -a crisp, lit, spacious keyboard

-preferably touch screen (2 in 1 or a tablet)

-inexpensive (beneath 600 if possible but I can go outside this range)

    -13" or bigger screen

Basically, most of the time I'm going to have this laptop on my lap, bed, places that aren't a table-top. I will be manhandling this laptop, lmao

    Let me know.

Yoga 9i vs Inspiron 7415 vs Samsung Galaxy Book Pro

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:42 PM PST

Form filled out below out of respect to the sub's rules.

I picked up three of Best Buy's laptop deals in hopes of choosing one of them as a replacement to a trusty first-gen Surface Book now facing its dying days (more in my post history):

    1. Samsung Galaxy Pro Book 360 13.3" for $900

    2. Dell Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 14" for $800.

    3. Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 14" for $1350

There is a fourth contender that I would like to compare to as well, the ASUS ZenBook 2-in-1 at Costco for $1350. IN fact, as I type this out I can't help but wonder why I would choose the Lenovo over the Asus.

Here I will make the hardware comparison even easier:

    Galaxy vs. Inspiron

    Yoga vs. Zenbook

Total budget: Up to about 1350 USD. I'd rather be closer to $1000, but if the extra $350 gets me something that will last 30% longer, then it's worth it. Are you open to refurbs/used? Eh, I suppose if it gets me something substantially better How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? These are all 2-in-1 with (to my understanding) similar performance and comparable battery life. That leaves build quality as one of the differentiating factors between them. How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important given the three (and a half) I've narrowed it down to. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Drawboard for annotating journal articles and PDFs, likely lots of reading in tablet mode. Medical literature. So much medical literature it makes my eyes bleed. With this line of work comes a not-insignificant amount of word processing. If I'm playing games on a laptop it tends to be slower-paced things these days. Given the new virtual paradigm, there will likely be a significant degree of educational video watching and some video-conferencing (though I manage to keep it mostly confined to work and work computers) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any gaming that may happen will be very light. I'm not a road warrior anymore. The laptop being replaced has Euro Truck Simulator 2, Prison Architect, and Celeste on it. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I love a good keyboard, and I really enjoyed the keyboard on my Surface Book. All three of these seemed comparable to each other when I tried display units (or models I hoped would be close to them). In looking for help hereI would appreciate input on build quality and the inking experience across the different manufacturers. It doesn't have to be like digital art level of good, but it has to be handwriting and note-taking good. A USB-A port is a plus though not a requirement as adapters are cheap and small enough (and again, not on the road for work so much these days). I like having a 3.5 mm jack, but again, not a deal-breaker. Having a built-in place to store the pen would be nice. USB-C charging would be a big plus for purposes of adaptability. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. You may wonder, "Why spend so much on a machine that just needs to be basic?" I like my machines to last me about 5 years and still be able to tackle 95% of what I want to throw at it at the end of that time. The desire for a 2-in-1 with decent inking also seems to add significantly to the price.

Should I repair my laptop or get something new?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:23 PM PST

    Hey guys

I accidently dropped my 2017 macbook pro (w/ retina display) and the LCD broke. I got 2 quotes from computer repair stores and they said it'll cost around $600/$650 AUD to fix.

My question is: is it worth it to fix the LCD for this price or should I just buy a new computer?

From my POV, it is cheaper to fix but not by that much - e.g. a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 retails for $799 and M1 2020 Macbook air costs $1.4k.

What does everyone here think? For me, I'm just concerned that the 2017 macbook pro (being 3-4 years old) doesn't have that much mileage left.

If you think I should replace, does anyone have any good suggestions? I'm mainly looking for something durable for 3-4 hours of daily use - mainly social media, netflix, emails, occasional word doc...that kind of stuff. No gaming.

    Thanks!

ISO portable laptop with good battery life for work + media editing

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:00 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $800 USD (I would prefer to go as inexpensive as possible, but I also want to treat myself with something of quality that will last for a few years--my price range is flexible, but I want to keep it under $1k).
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery and portability are the most important to me. My current Lenovo IdeaPad is too bulky, and I've always hated having to take it anywhere, so a smaller laptop would be ideal. As I will be traveling with it, it won't be near a plug throughout the day, so a great battery life is also necessary.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, but if it's too thin I get sketched out that I'll break it easily.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" to ~15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan on photo + video editing; will be using Photoshop for photo editing, unsure what I'll use for videos. I occasionally use Audacity for audio editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A camera with clear quality would be a great addition for zoom calls, but I have been thinking about buying one on Amazon. So while it would be nice, that is a bit lower on my wants for this laptop. If it has a spot for me to put in a DVD, that would be awesome (I'm not sure if any newer models even have that anymore though?).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am clueless when it comes to this, as I've had my current laptop for years and am out of the loop on where to even begin to search for options--I have an iPhone and the idea of having everything linked with a Mac sounds like it would make my life a lot easier, but I also don't know a lot of other brands, so if there's a better fit please let me know. I plan on using this new laptop for work/school (a lot of note taking in Word) and media editing (what I've mentioned above). I've read that Apple is slowly phasing out audio jacks for their laptops (not sure if any other brands are doing this)--I don't want to have to use bluetooth headphones. As much memory space as possible would be ideal. I've never been fond of tablets, but if you know of a really good one, feel free to include it as well. TIA~

What’s the catch with this model? Razer Blade 15 with 3070 for $1799 instead of $2499?

Looking for top tier Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:38 AM PST

Hello, I'm looking for a top tier gaming laptop able to run even the most recent games at 4k on max settings. The reason why I'm going with a laptop instead of desktop is due to my job requiring me to be on the go and as a gamer I still want to be able to game with the best graphics and performance possible. I'm currently considering this laptop here https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MAX-17-i7-11800H-Thunderbolt/dp/B09HNQ6D9H/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?crid=2V8O0BIXN7U8F&keywords=gaming+laptop+17.3+inch&qid=1638827224&refinements=p_n_feature_twenty-three_browse-bin%3A13580787011%7C13580788011%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A23592718011&rnid=23592713011&s=pc&sprefix=gaming+laptop+17.%2Caps%2C148&sr=1-9 will this meet my max out 4k 60+fps needs or do you guys have another suggestion? My budget for this is anywhere from $3,000 to $3,500.

Please help in choosing between 3 laptops:

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 07:35 PM PST

HP: really good option, only thing that i Don't like about it is the 45% NTSC which online I've seen that it's apparently really bad screen color quality. https://www.hp.com/us-en/laptops/product-details/product-specifications/2100723917

    Website I'm buying HP: https://www.cellshop.com/br/notebook-utra-book-notebook-tablet/notebook-hp-15-dw3033dx-intel-core-i3-de-11-8gb-256gb-ssd-156-fhd-w10-2749525

Asus: good option but cpu is worse than HP, and i can't find the NTSC % https://nissei.com/br/catalog/product/view/id/98484 (website I'm buying from, check (the specs from here!!)

    ( English website) https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/For-Home/All-series/Vivobook-15-F512-AMD/

MSI: worse cpu but has RGB keyboard which is really cool https://www.cellshop.com/br/notebook-utra-book-notebook-tablet/notebook-msi-b10mw-486us-i3-de-10-8gb-128gb-ssd-140-fhd-w10-2707518 ( check the specs)

    https://www.msi.com/Business-Productivity/Modern-14-B10X-r/Specification (English)

I like them all, but I'd like to know, is the CPU difference between them significant?

And how about the NTSC, Do you know the % about the others and is that a big deal?

The hp laptop has some good specs and looks the most up to date, but that NTSC aghh.

    I Don't know i want your opinions.

I Don't care that much about storage... The main things i wanna compare is the screens and CPU. I'd mostly use the laptop for university like making a lot of slides and PDFs etc, i have plans on learning programming too, so would cpu make a big difference?

I like the Hp but I'm scared of the screen....

Also i love the design of the others though, specially the MSI with that keyboard damn... But yeah I'd love to hear your opinions and suggestions. Thank you!

Looking for a laptop that could run valorant and Fortnite pretty smoothly, I know absolutely nothing about computers.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 07:17 PM PST

I know nothing about rams, GPU, graphics card... It's like a new language to me. Does someone have a reccomendation for a laptop that could potentially run fortnite and valorant, without too much lags? Budget is around 800$-1000$. I'm also open to getting a PC but I heard those aren't cheap at all, so that's why my main idea is to get a gaming laptop.

Need a laptop similar to my current laptop but with a graphics card. An upgrade without sacrificing too much.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 03:07 PM PST

My current laptop is a Sony Vaio Pro 13 (8 yrs old approx.)

    • RAM: 8GB
    • Storage: 250GB SSD
    • CPU: Intel i7-4500U @ 1.80GHz
    • Type: 64 bit
    • Touchscreen
    • Extremely lightweight (ultrabook)
    • 13"
    • Windows 8.1 (win 10 capable)
    • Secondary External Battery
    • Very good battery life (about 8hrs+ per battery when first bought it - still around 8hrs in total after 8 yrs)
    • Carbon fibre (very durable)
    • Backlit Keyboard

I primarily use it for programming (Visual Studio) and streaming videos on the internet.

I'd like to use it more for Steam games, but it's internal graphics are pathetic.

Examples of games I can run:

    • Untitled Goose Game
    • Stardew Valley
    • Terraria (just about)
    • League of Legends (with some lag)
    • Ori and Blind Forest (serious lag)
    • Assassins Creed 2 (serious lag)

.... so basically a potato when it comes to games.

As much as I love my current laptop (best I've ever had), even the storage is becoming a problem.

    Desired Upgraded Specs:

    • Better processor
    • 16GB+ RAM
    • 500GB+ Storage
    • Decent Graphics Card

I really dont want to sacrifice much on battery life. I'd like my next laptop to be as lightweight as possible, but I'm willing to sacrifice this somewhat.

My current laptop is very noisy on its performance fan settings (which it's regularly on as it gets really hot otherwise), so a noisy laptop is fine but not preferred.

Also open to an alternative of an external graphics card + upgrade to win 10, but this is seeming less reasonable as time goes on.

Ideal budget is about £1500, though it would be great if I could get what I want for cheaper.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

Can't choose between two 2-in-1 Laptops... Any Suggestions or Personal Experiences with Either?

    Lenovo Flex 5 Laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Processor-Graphics-82HU00JWUS-Graphite/dp/B09BG96KFJ/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=lenovo+flex+5&qid=1638928956&s=electronics&sr=1-5

14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) Touch Display, AMD Ryzen 5 5500U Processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD Storage, AMD Radeon Graphics, Windows 11 Home, 82HU00JWUS, Graphite Grey

    Samsung Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha : https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-book-flex2-alpha-13-3-qled-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-ssd-royal-silver/6457785.p?skuId=6457785

    13.3" QLED Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - Intel Iris Xe Graphics - - 8GB Memory - 256GB SSD - Royal Silver

I can't choose between either one. The Samsung has an amazing display, looks great, and has a pretty long battery life. The Lenovo has twice as much RAM, feels more durable, and has a larger screen.

I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has had any positive/negative experience with either and what their suggestion is.

My intended use-case for this laptop is for coding, YouTube, web browsing, and light gaming. I might potentially use it for art creation and such too, not sure yet.

    Thanks in advance!

Is there something that acts as both a laptop docking station and a switch between machines?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 12:02 PM PST

Sorry this isn't really for a laptop, it's more so for an accessory.

I am getting a work laptop which I will need to plug into my monitors, keyboard, and mouse. The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 2 AMD (15"). My desktop is a custom PC.

I know Lenovo recommends using their docks for the ThinkPad models, but I don't believe those can switch between computers to allow me to have everything plugged in and switch between desktop and laptop.

What is recommended for this? Price range is flexible but around $100-$300 preferred

Search for good performance 2-in-1 laptop with robust hardware (all costs)

I'm a scientific researcher and I'm looking for a new laptop. Here is what I care about:

    1. Robust hardware. I want a laptop that will function on purchase and not require endless returns and tinkering. This is the most important and where I need you most, because the seller obviously isn't going to disclose these issues.
    2. Performance. I sometimes do pretty intensive computations. I think I would be happy with a quadcore i7 intel processor and at least 16GB of RAM. I would like a SSD drive of at least 512MB, but preferably 1TB.
    3. Ideally 2-in-1 computer. Ideally, I would also like to have a 2-in-1 computer that converts to a tablet. The tablet experience does not need to be the most amazing. It just needs to enable me to do Zoom presentations and the like. But if you have recommendations that do not include this feature, let me know as well.

My previous laptop was the original Surface Book. I was very happy with its performance. However, the hardware was a nightmare. In the first I got, the battery would not recharge when emptied. In the second I got, the screen stained and broke from the heat.

I am very tempted to get the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9310), but there seem to have been frustrating hardware issues reported as well. I would be grateful for your experience with this machine (good and bad) and for any other recommendation.

Cost is not a major issue. I am willing to pay up to 2500 euros for my laptop.

    Thank you for your time.

P.S.: The battery life shouldn't be shitty. Preferably above 9 hours in normal use. But it's not my main concern, it will be plugged most of the time. The screen size should probably be >13.5 inches, but I'll have a monitor half the time so it is fine.

    Need laptop suggestions for Christmas!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 02:47 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1500 usd or maybe more

Are you open to refurbs/used? No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance over build quality and battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not that much

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or a little more

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, but I'll maybe use the laptop for college next year.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Apex Legends, Ori, and shooting games, Roblox. At least 80+fps 144hz. High settings

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not necessarily.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. No

History of Laptop Troubles, Looking for Something That Will Work

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:20 AM PST

Hey everyone, don't usually use Reddit very much but I honestly don't know where else to ask. I've got to be the most unlucky person in the world, because I've had several very expensive laptops that died on me right around when the warranties expired and tech support always tells me they've never experienced anything like it before. Recently took my XPS15 9575 to Geek Squad and they told me they couldn't even run diagnostics on it because the thermals reached such dangerous levels…. and it's my second XPS 15. And probably my sixth laptop in the past 10 years. I know very little about performance optimization so I don't mess with anything I shouldn't be, and my use case doesn't really seem particularly strenuous. Am I just missing something? Am I the unluckiest laptop buyer in the world? My first laptop ever had to be returned to the store like 6 times in the first week due to unresolvable hardware issues, if you're doubting someone can have luck this bad.

I play some games, but casually and extremely infrequently. Nothing that requires a crazy high framerate or anything. Most of the time I'm just browsing (I do have a lot of tabs open), chatting on Discord, and watching videos. Occasionally I do some digital art, but that's about it.

I'm looking for something that will let me occasionally play something like Hades or some casual Steam games and won't die on me in 2 years. Maybe if it was reliable I'd play more, like Skyrim or Phasmo or something. But definitely not my go-to games. Also something that won't give me first degree burns just from booting it up.

I've done some research (but again, I've begun to distrust reviews since my experience never seems to match) and I've come up with a couple of laptops I think have reasonable specs and should do more than what I'm asking for. Could someone give me some advice?

    HP Omen 15 (Intel 11)

    Lenovo Legion 5i Pro

    MSI GS66

    Zephyrus G14

(The last one is a bit different from the others, but I like that it has a good battery life. I've got trauma from the 1 hour battery on my XPS 15, even if it's anomalous. This laptop seems to have made several compromises, but overall seems pretty solid for what it offers.)

I'm also totally open to suggestions. Thank you all so much!

    Is Alienware good for gaming?

Looking for a really solid gaming laptop. Is Alienware right for me? If so which models would be the best? If not, what is another better brand?
