Would installing a bathroom extractor fan regulate my server room's temperature?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:02 AM PST

    Hi guys,

So I converted a large closet into my server room and it's been fantastic however, the room gets awfully toasty with all the stuff I keep adding.

I always have to keep the door open which my GF isn't a fan of because of the sound from the fans.

Secondly, It's finally chilly in my location now, however server room stays warm.

    https://i.postimg.cc/bwhm40dX/Screenshot-20211207-105235.png

As you can see it's a solid 10f hotter than a room right beside it with an open door.

This is during winter where outside is 60f right now.

Adding an AC vent to there would be quite expensive, but on the other side of that room is a bathroom with an extractor fan.

I'm wondering if I buy a T joint, cut the ducting going from the bathroom and install a bathroom extractor fan in the ceiling of my server room, and then connect it to the T joint so it's porting the air outside along with the bathroom air - is a good idea?

I'm no physicist but I believe hot air rises, so if I have an extractor fan that is over rated for the size of the server room (it's like 8x6 ft) that should remove the hottest of the air?

Secondly, an over specced extractor fan would hopefully allow me to close the door and the room should essentially have negative pressure where it would begin sucking cooler air through the gaps around the door jam?

I could even add a vent grate in the door to further allow cool air to be sucked in, although that may be a hard sell to my wife to be.

She's already wondering where she would put all her shoes in the event she moves in.

Will port forwarding reserve that port for the up ported to?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 04:20 AM PST

I want to access my raspberry pi via SSH from outside my home network, and I'm worried that port-forwarding port 22 to my raspberry pi's ip will break all the traffic on port 22 for anyone else using that port in my network.

I can see the port has not been forwarded yet, so am I safe to assume nothing would break if I port-forwarded port 22?

Can I use crossover cable as normal ethernet cable?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 06:24 AM PST

As the title says, I made a mistake doing my ethernet cable, and choose the wrong color scheme, so the tester says my cable is crossover.

Anyway if I connect my pc with the router using this cable, internet connection works.

Are there any disadvantages in leaving the cable as it is? Am I getting less performance?

EDIT: ok I'll stick with that! Thank you guys!!

There's a dead zone in my house in one room: ethernet cable not an option. Any advice?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:13 AM PST

The router/modem/whatever is from Rogers, internet speed is 100mbps. It's literally one room in my house and it's a room I'm frequently in. If I go out of the room, even 10 feet, the internet is fine. Am I shit out of luck because that's the nature of wifi, or do I have options to improve the range/speed/packet loss in this part of the house?

SHould clarify: By deadzone i mean packet loss where the internet goes REALLY slow for a few seconds then picks back up, randomly disconnects from the internet (this ONLY happens in this room so it's not a universal issue).

Need advice on wifi router for flat with concrete walls.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:55 AM PST

Hello all. As with all the stuff, deeper you dig, more confusing it gets :D So im in need of a stronger wifi router as i changed rooms where i game. I really dont want to rewire whole flat once again and with better internet connection with up to 1000 Mbit/s speed from provider im in for a new router. So router is/will be located in the middle room, whole building is concrete walls, with old router im geting 1-2bars of signal but it doesnt provide maximum speed. Im in search for a newer model router thats able to penetrate atleast one concrete wall in 10m radius without losing much on speed. If thats not enough, extenders aind expensive that i can plug in like inbetween rooms and those walls. Budget for router is about 140euro with a lil wiggle room if needed. If i get strong enough i would connect two TVs and a console to wifi as those are most used, then ocassionally max 3 phones and two laptops that would use it.

As im zero in this network stuff all i can use is google, but would like to know from someone with experince what realy i do need without overpaying for brand or extras i dont need. Few routers i kinda researched more are: Archer C2300; Netgear r6900p(this one cant find locally and the price is way over my budget)

So please, all help and suggestions welcome. Thank you in advance!

    RJ45 male-male coupling

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 03:21 AM PST

Hi, for a problem that can't be solved in any other way, I need the shortest possible RJ45 male/male coupling. How come I can't find one anywhere on the net? All I can find are female/female ones. I find it unfair. I think sex change should be open to all cable genders.

jokes aside, are just my google skills bad, or I absolutely have to diy the thing? I'm so bad at crimping cables properly that I'd rather pay a few bucks for pre-made ones.

Edit: I want something like this but possibly pre-made

Stuck in broadband installation nightmare, is there something I can do?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:57 AM PST

Hello everyone, and thank you for the answers.

I moved in a new flat, and subscribed to NowTv Broadband for a 12 months contract. The 23 of November I had the Openreach engineer visit, he told me he had to solve some work on the roof of an apartment, he needed special tools and would return later. Then tells me he can't and I would be contacted for a further visit.

Meanwhile, I connect the modem and the connection someway works. I call the assistance to check, and they tell me if it works use it, no problem. Ok. I wait and wait for a new visit, and it is scheduled for the 1 of December. I stay at home, but the engineer does not come. I think that's strange, but my connection continues to work so uhm. Next day, I receive a sms saying there is a problem with my subscription and to immediately call assistance. The person confirms me I need to have a visit from an engineer, and I will be contacted. The 4 of December I receive the email saying they are sorry, Openreach is having big problems, and they ask me 3 availabilities from the 8th onwards replying to the mail. I immediately answer, but receive no further communication from them. Today, my connection abruptly stopped working. I go on MyTV website and I see that they have for some reason cancelled my subscription. I call the assistance and a very kind but helpless assistant tells me that NowTv never provided me the connection (!!), he can see that my subscription has been cancelled unilaterally by Openreach and not by them, and he asked the team to deal with my case urgently but probably I will need to go over and do a new subscription then wait another 2 weeks or so for the engineer first visit and so on.

Now, lucky part is I have never been charged for that, so I had like 2 weeks of free internet it seems. Bad part is that I'm left again with no wi-fi connection (and my mobile connection inside home is really terrible) and the perspective of not having it for another 2 weeks maybe.

Thus, coming to the question: is there something I can do apart from waiting and hoping?

Parental Controls for a Linksys EA7300 Router

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:45 AM PST

I use a Linksys EA7300 wireless router and I'm looking for a way to block the internet connection to certain devices at certain times. My main concern is the amount of data my family is using and it primarily comes from members of our family falling asleep with our tablets on while streaming. We've been getting really close to our data limits and I'm looking for a way to shut off the internet at certain times (minus physically unplugging the modem). The Linksys routers is "supposed" to have parental controls built in but they suck. I have looked through Reddit and Google but most people say the same thing about the built in parental controls, they don't work. I found a great post about the same issue from a few years ago. The recommendations were OpenDNS and NextDNS. While I like the idea of not cost from OpenDNS, FreeDNS is only $1.99 a month so I can handle that. What I want to know is if, there are any better options out there that people have used. Thanks.

    2 Asus RT68-U with AIMesh vs TP-Link Deco M9

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:44 AM PST

I currently own an ASUS RT68u running MerlinWRT. Small house and I have a signal extender but I'm finding it to be flakey. Thinking about adding another RT68 ($70) for AIMesh or buying updated Wifi6 ($400-500) or Mesh system like the TP-Link Deco M9($200).

I understand increasing my investment will increase the value but I'm not planning on being in this house for very long. If I'm going to invest in a more expensive system it should work 100% in most larger homes and for a few years or more.

Any experience with AI Mesh or TP Deco? Square footage info would be helpful. General "stay away" guidance also appreciated

If "WIFI6 is best" is your answer, can you recommend a good, price effective option?

Is this cable good for in-wall pulling?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:43 AM PST

The only solid real copper cable I found on Amazon that ships to me is this:

    https://www.amazon.com/J-Tech-Digital-Performance-Transmission-JTECH-CAT6-100ft/dp/B08B8Y9GNV/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?

It is solid and patched (the first one I saw that's both solid and patched, normally I see stranded patched ones)

So I was thinking to get this one for in-wall pulling( cut off the connectors and use it as bulk)

Will that be as good as buying say a bulk Monoprice/trueCable? Or for in-wall pulling I should also look for other things as well, and not just solid or pure copper?

**Also, has anyone used J-Tech cables before?

What type of ethernet cable to use these days for future proofing?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 07:43 AM PST

    Hey folks,

I'm finishing my basement and my walls and ceilings are currently exposed. I'm running a 50ft line of ethernet cable to it and trying to pick the best one. I currently have gigabit internet, but I wanna future proof this as much as I can for the next 20 years. My natural reaction is to pick an S/FTP 24 AWG Cat8 ethernet. I fully get I will not be able to take advantage of any extra speed boost but Cat8 is cheap enough these days that it doesn't make sense to try and save $25 and go with something slower just for the heck of it. At the same time, I'm not certain that Cat8 would truly be "best" (compared to Cat 5/6/7 and all the variations). I'm also not sure S/FTP is "best" (compared to UTP or unshielded, etc). There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding this, so thought I'd check. I'll grab from Monoprice so I can at least feel relatively confident that whatever I buy is legitimately what it says it is.

Is S/FTP 24 AWG Cat8 best for an in-wall placement with future proofing in mind for a 50 foot run?

    Thanks!

Router keeps dropping down to 100

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:17 AM PST

    Recently upgraded internet to 500mbps

I noticed my Wi-Fi speeds were good around ~300mbps I know it's low because of the bottleneck at modem but my wired speeds at computer were still at ~90mbps.

So I did some reading around and figured it a bad cable so I re wired everything with cat5e and went into my router setting and seen my negation speed for 1000mbps. Amazing I thought ! Did a speed test it matched my Wi-Fi speed !

Well a few days later I decided to check it again and that port negation speed was back at 100 along with my speed test.

If I unplug that cable and plug it back into my router it will have 1000mbps but it only for 10mins to 30mins then it bumps back down to 100 mbps.

It's driving me crazy so any help would be greatly appreciated ! Thank you !

    Multi-Accesspoints Same SSID non Mesh.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:10 AM PST

So I have 3 access points, might add another one or two.

Currently they have a total of 7 radios. 4x5Ghz and 3x2.4Ghz. All radios have 2 virtual access points. One for LAN, one for GUEST.

That's a total of 14 BSIDs? with the two same SSIDs.

All access points are connected to a wired ethernet backbone.

I am wondering what the performance limitations are on this approach, over say mesh, maybe even the open mesh standard.

The only issue I have actually seen is the migration is rather unmanaged and sometimes a bit hit and miss, with devices ending up struggling on with a distance AP rather than move on.

Dual band broken on router. Can I buy an attachment to get a 2.4 Ghz signal working?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:00 AM PST

I have a Asus RT-AC86U that won't broadcast a 2.4Ghz signal. This is particularly a problem because a lot of my devices won't detect the 5 Ghz signal. Before I just buy a whole new router, is there an attachment I can put on my current router to get a 2.4ghz signal working?

I'm currently just running an older Linkys router to my Asus router, but the connection is extremely slow and it doesn't appear to be a model that can act as a repeater/extender?

Using two routers to have max wifi performance

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 10:58 AM PST

Hi, I am living in a house that has 3 floors. On the lowest floor (floor 0) I have put an ASUS router (we will call this router number 1) behind my modem. On floor 2 I have put a second router, also ASUS (call this router number 2). This ASUS modem is connected to a switch, and that switch is connected to ASUS router1. My Synology NAS is connected to a switch that is connected to router 1. When I am on floor 3, I can't connect to my Synology NAS. It seems that router 2 can't find my NAS.

What should I do? Both routers are put in AP mode. Should I change router 1 to normal mode? If yes, what should I change? Sorry, it's very hard to explain the situation in English.

    Thank you

Pass-thru "EZ" RJ45 connectors? Yay or nay?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:58 AM PST

I'm tempted to replace my old no-name RJ45 crimper that's misaligned half the time with a new pass-thru crimper. But I've read conflicting posts on a certain hot-deals website; some claiming that pass-thru RJ45 connectors will void warranties for some equipment. First, is this true? If so, is this because the exposed copper after cutting flush still leaves the possibility of short circuits?

Sharing External Hard drive Over LAN: attach to USB 3.0 port on router versus PC?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:56 AM PST

I'm looking to hook up an 8TB USB 3.0 external WD drive to my home network to store large files and make them accessible 24/7 over the LAN.

Would it be better to hook it directly into the USB 3.0 port on my TP-Link Archer AX55 router, or to hook it into an old laptop I have, and share the drive over the network (either via Gigabit Ethernet or WiFi 6)?

Plugging the hard drive directly into the router seems simpler, but I'm wondering if it's better to have an intermediate computer to keep the load off the router's processor? Any laptop from the last 10 years would surely have a more powerful CPU than a router, right? I have an old HP EliteBook 2570p & EliteBook 2530p (each upgraded with USB 3.0 & WiFi 6) that could be placed right next to the router.

    Terminating drops in townhome.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:29 AM PST

I recently moved into a new townhome that i'm renting. Only plan on staying here for 1 year. The issue is that the drops here are all phone lines and not ethernet. I would like to run ethernet drops in the upstairs bedroom where i plan to put my computers(3) and in the cubby where i plan to put a tv. Also need a drop in living room area for 2nd tv. The internet runs into the master bedroom closet from the garage. I called a couple places for quotes and got 189 per drop, or 129 per hour; average 40min-1 hour per drop. Id rather not spend that much on a place that i wont live in for long. Any suggestions?

Isp is frontier 1gig up/down. They did provide an eero router that im using as a temp solution. Router i would like to use is unifi erx with 2 u6-lites.

Help with continuously slow internet speeds

    Posted: 07 Dec 2021 08:17 AM PST

    Hello,

I've recently been dealing with an issue of continuously lacking internet speeds. It is driving me crazy, but networks are not my strong suit, so not sure what I may be missing.

    Some details about my setup:

-Motorola 24x8 Docsis 3.0 Modem, ~1.5 years old -Eero router, ~1.5 years old -RCN (Chicago) 250 mbps plan -At max load, I have two phones connected, a 4K streaming tv, and maybe two laptops going at the same time. 99% of the time, load is my work laptop and phone. -1000 square foot, one floor apartment

When I moved in, I had an RCN technician come out and set up my modem. All was fine and was actually receiving >300 mbps, though I have only been paying for 250. Roughly 2 months ago, I noticed my speed was in the 30 mbps range. I figured it was some small issue that would pass, and it didn't affect my usage much. After running regular checks via Eero, I saw that it was never improving past 40 mbps over the span of a week, so I called a technician. They came out, said there were some issues with the lines that he fixed, but were still seeing connectivity issues with my modem. They came inside, looked at my modem, removed a 'filter' (googling results in maybe a MoCa filter?) and like magic, I was back up to >300 mbps. Now, a month later, I'm back down to dragging speeds. Today, I ran a speed test and hit 500 kbps. That's right, kbps. This is really frustrating, because I work from home and need steady internet. Restarting modem, leaving unplugged for a few minutes and plugging back in, nothing is helping. Connected right to my modem and ran a speed test to verify and getting similar results.

Any ideas what might be wrong? When I call RCN, they offer to send out another tech, but warn there may be an $80 charge if the issue is with my equipment (I own, not renting modem from RCN). If I have to call them back out, I'd like to make sure the issue is not on my end. Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thank you!
