    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:28 AM PST

The new version 6.0 offers a tagging system which helps to organize your notes. Since version 5 other features where implemented, like a shopping-mode, encryption with XChaCha20-Poly1305, improved NextCloud support and many other smaller improvements.

    Features:

    • Write the notes in an easily operated WYSIWYG editor.
    • Create To-Do lists to keep an overview of your pending tasks.
    • Protect selecte notes with a user defined password.
    • Organize and filter the notes with a tagging system.
    • Quickly find the right note with the full-text search, just by typing a few letters.
    • Store the notes to an online-storage of your choice (self hosting).
    • The notes never leave the device unencrypted, they are end-to-end encrypted.
    • A dark theme is available for more comfortable working in dark environment.
    • SilentNotes does not collect user information and requires no unnecessary privileges.

For further information visit SilentNotes homepage, there you can find screenshots, explanations about the encryption, operation examples, FAQs and more. I would be happy to get some feedback, whether it contains suggestions, (positive) criticism or just a thumbs-up, all is welcome.

I recently upgraded to 11 and I had an epiphany about the Start Menu that goes back several versions.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:25 PM PST

Forgive me if this has been said often already, or if my "epiphany" is a frequent topic here.

i upgraded to 11 about a month ago, and I really like much of the upgrades so far, but using the Start Menu lately has been a bit of a head-scratcher, and I realized just now that this isn't really a Windows 11 problem. It's been getting progressively worse for several iterations.

I've been using Windows as my daily driver OS for well over 20 years now. I got my first PC right after Windows 95 came out, and I remember using the Start Menu as the main launching place for most of my activities then.

Today, however, the Start Menu is the last place I really want to look for anything. Even with Windows 10, I really used it as a last resort if something I was looking for wasn't already pinned to my taskbar or easily accessible on the desktop.

Now, however, they have buried the apps even farther into the design structure, and finding things is just painful. I find myself typing into the search feature to narrow down what I'm after, and while quick, it seems like a complete failure of a GUI if my hands need to leave the mouse to find something with the keyboard. Isn't the Start Menu's sole purpose to guide my to what I want without making me type?

I miss the days where the Start Menu was curated by the user into a list of your most often used programs and documents.

Does anyone else feel this way?

and if you can tell me how to change its location (preferably without having to reinstall all of my apps) it would be great

im leaving windows for arch linux.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:58 PM PST

yes, its true. i am leaving windows. watching the ltt challenge really made me consider. windows was very important to me learning so much about computers. however, windows has too many problems now. i will now address all of them.

    Privacy and security

windows doesnt have good privacy and security. windows is a centralized operating system, or an os controlled by a single entity. it is also close source. windows used to be a spyware-free os. windows 7 was really secure and it didnt have spyware. windows 10 and 11 do, however. im really sick of using shutup10++ as i use mostly foss programs, and want out of the box privacy. security is bad. running an admin account as your main is the worst thing you can do, and is also why linux requires the use of sudo/doas so much. encryption is locked behind a paywall i dont own (i only have windows 10 home), and device encryption in settings doesnt show up. every security feature is locked behind a paywall. want a temporary windows install for that one program? cough up the money. want bitlocker? more money you need. want the pro visual studio? pay for it. i already have to pay for adobe cc. also cortana is shit.

    deceptiveness

windows 10 has so many dark patterns. name one, it has it. roach motels? setting the default browser to anything other than edge (firefox made it one click). sneak into basket? microsoft accounts. privacy zuckering? opt out analytics data that requires more work than it should. disguised ads? THE FUCKING APPS WINDOWS INSTALLS PLEASE MICROSOFT I DONT WANT CANDY CRUSH SAGA. its really disgusting that they do it.

    bloatware.

not only is windows itself bloat, they apps it preinstalled are bloat. windows includes cortana. who the fuck likes cortana? it includes 2 settings menus, 2 media players, 2 browsers, 4 notetaking apps, 2 paint programs, 3 snipping tools, and 2 printing programs. it also shoves a microsoft account down your throat, something i dont want.

    authoritarianism

microsoft seems to think they can dictate what the user wants for the os. and they dont have care for the consumer. computers are like cow farms. windows is the cow farm where the cows (end users) are trapped in pens, because the cow owners think they are bumbling dollar signs that can make them money, and so trap them to maximize profit. yes, it is more efficent, but it is worse for the cows. linux is like the cows are on the free range farm. the cows may fall into gopher holes (issues, and quite often actually, especially the cows new to the range), but other cows usually pull that first cow out.

    conclusion

sorry this was a long post. i wanted to describe my problems with windows. as for my distro of choice, i chose manjaro kde as it looks nice and has good support (and its arch based). i thought about doing zorin os but ended up not doing so. hope i got to you. have a great day.

An apology and a new found respect for windows

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:06 AM PST

so i posted a post here saying f*ck windows 11 and microsoft, and i nuked windows 11 and moved to manjaro, the learning curve was tough, i couldn't even make games correctly, since i mostly p*rate games, tried wine it kept giving me errors. next was customizing my desktop, that was serious hard work, i can't even put it into words (it was that bad, almost gave up customizing but ideas entered my mind) , conky kept failing left and right and giving me black shadows, when loading widgets, kde kept crashing, and yeah the blur effect on everything gets boring and not special fast. what's worse is that i miss rainmeter, and just the level of customization, the desktop layouts i could come up with. i tried it in wine, but it just doesn't work properly. i have now come to have serious respect for windows both 10 and 11, i mean just how easy it is to download an exe from the internet or some shady illegal game and it just works, it's so convinient, i wish i knew what i had before throwing it away. i really don't recommend linux to a windows user or someone trying to take control of windows, just take power back, i'm really sorry for what i said and i am now regretting it

    Windows updates known issues

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 04:09 AM PST

I am trying to find a website where they provide information about that a Windows update can break.

So far I found only https://www.manageengine.com/patch-management/resources/microsoft-known-issues.html but after some googling, I found specific posts for specific KB which produce specific problems.

Where I can find a place that has all updates? Or most?

I remember there was a standalone windows update tool, like WUSA, but it categorise updates with by criticality and what it breaks (4 categories like safe, almost safe, reported unsafe and unsafe).

    Thank you

Recommendation for how best to migrate user account from Win10 to a new machine running Win11?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:27 PM PST

Flaired this post as a question, not help. I'm more here for advice, I don't really consider this as asking for troubleshooting or help

I've done a lot of Googling, and it's all to do with upgrading on the same machine. Or backing up and restoring on the same OS etc. I truely can't find a suitable guide or advice on the best way to go about this.

I'm used to Macs where there's a simple button in the setup where you can straight up migrate accounts, apps and all the data over wifi. Is there anything similar in Windows? Or at the very least the same end result.

Long story short I have a Win10 machine that's has a hardware fault and is being replaced with a new machine that has Win11 pre-installed on it. The old Win10 machine has a lot of apps, settings, configuation, and files that I'd really like to not have to setup again if I can avoid it. It is linked with a online Microsoft account. I also have a small NAS with a backup on it using the 'Backup and Restore (Windows 7)' option. (The Win10 backup doesnt see it for whatever reason.). The files arent that important and are easily dealt with, I'm mainly concerned about the apps and configs.

Anyway, any advice? Is there maybe a Win11>Win11 feature that does this, should I upgrade the old computer first?

    Thanks,

    PowerToys Release v0.51.0

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:48 PM PST

    Full changelog and download: https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases/edit/v0.51.0

The v0.51 release cycle introduces some new things regarding our mouse utilities. First is we've added in a presentation mode helper to highlight your mouse when you click. We've also added additional settings toward Find my mouse to enable more customization.

Next we've been focusing work on "Always on Top" system to help make any window you want to be the top most. A lot of thought is currently going into interaction models to make sure it 'feels' right for toggling as well as visualizing.

Last, we've been working on our engineering systems this month and into next. This work will improve our localization integration and our 'build farm' match our CI system far more. Behind the scene work but very important work for working faster.

    Change log

Things to note - We shifted our localization internal service and are working on adding automated integrations back in.

PowerToys Awake - System tray and settings use same language for turning things on.

Color Picker - New formats added to copy colors as a float or decimal value. - Adjust color window now accepts lower-case HEX codes.

FancyZones - New window switching functionality! Now users can assign multiple windows to a zone and cycle between them using the <kbd>Win</kbd> + <kbd>PgDn/PgUp</kbd> commands by default. Thanks @FLOAT4! - Added functionality for zones to adopt system accent color and theme. Thanks @davidegiacometti! - Added visual preview of zone appearance in settings menu. Thanks @niels9001! - Fixed bug where FancyZones crashes on launch.

Image Resizer - Fixed bug where resizing images creates empty folders. - Added option to remove non-essential metadata. Helps significantly reduce the size of files. Thanks @CleanCodeDeveloper! - Fixed bug caused by Image Resizer receiving an unexpected property type or value. Thanks @CleanCodeDeveloper!

Mouse utilities - Find My Mouse: Improved functionality to activate when user double click time configuration is set above 100ms. - Find My Mouse: Fixed display on all virtual desktops as opposed to only the virtual desktop where it was created. - Find My Mouse: New settings to enable a lot more customization based on your feedback. - Minor UI tweaks for fluent icons, appearance, <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> usage, and utility descriptions. Thanks @niels9001! - New Mouse Highlighter PowerToy! When enabled, activate mouse highlighting with <kbd>Win</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>H</kbd> by default to begin displaying visual cues on your display when either the left or right mouse buttons are clicked. There is a much more powerful tool called SysInternal ZoomIt that is very helpful as well.

![highlighter turned on while dragging mouse](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/9866362/142475413-77b00bae-bd28-42ae-a6c8-0dc4356e8525.gif)

PowerRename - Improved rename performance! This is now at parity (or better) with the prior version based on multiple tests. - Added keyboard accelerators with <kbd>Enter</kbd> and <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> to execute rename. Thanks @niels9001! - UI tweaks to now add number of items selected, grid-lines for improved readability, reduced font sizes & margins, and improved window resizing. - Fixed UI focus issues. Thanks @niels9001! - Added default window width and height. Thanks @niels9001! - Added PowerRename event logging for BugReportTool

PowerToys Run - New entries added for settings plugin. Thanks @htcfreek! - Added support for application URI handling like mailto: and ms-settings:. Thanks @franky920920! - Added DevContainer workspaces to search results of the VSCode Workspaces Plugin. Thanks @JacobDeuchert! - Fixes for crashing issues.

Shortcut Guide - Added rounded corners to keys and tooltips, and system accent colors for desktop backdrop. Thanks @niels9001!

Settings - Fixed default settings window size to prevent it from opening offscreen. Thanks @davidegiacometti!

Video Conference Mute - Minor UI tweaks for icon, clear button, and overlay image selection #14248. Thanks @niels9001!

Prototype work - Always on top prototype of being actively worked on. Right now you hit a key-combo and it enables it. We are investigating ways to highlight the window in some form as well.

Installer - Investigated how to fully shift to WIX bootstrapper and remove custom boot strapper - Investigated how to fully shift to HKCU vs HKLM.

    Random helping out - Spell check fix - Thanks @franky920920! - Fix a URL - Thanks @JeffersonQin!

Development relevant - Focusing on cleaning up backlog of issues and developing a method to aid in prioritizing. @Dend and @crutkas are partnering to see if we can develop one signal to see what we are calling 'centers of gravity'. - Our primary dev branch is now named Main. - Adjusting plugin folder structure for PT Run #10796 - Working on shifting our release pipeline onto same system that Windows Terminal uses. - Improvements to environment variable usage/update process in PT Run. Thanks @htcfreek! - Update .NET to 3.1.20. - Centralized process list in the BugReportTool. - Registry handling improvement for MSI and File Explorer add-ons.

    Community contributions

We'd like to directly mention certain contributors (in alphabetical order) for their continued community support this month and helping directly make PowerToys a better piece of software.

    @AnonymousWP, @Aaron-Junker, @CleanCodeDeveloper, @davidegiacometti, @FLOAT4, @franky920920, @htcfreek, @JacobDeuchert, @Jay-o-Way @JeffersonQin, @niels9001, and @rdeveen.

Trying to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. But it keeps asking for a USB security key. I never set one up…

I get tha prompt. I have no other choice but to hit cancel. It then gives me 3 options: "Back" "Try Again" "Other ways to sign in"

The mouse click doesn't work so I push tab til' I finally have "other ways to sign in" selected and I hit enter. It goes back to the game, and while saying "press any button to start"

    https://i.imgur.com/w8i3nlK.jpg

    So I comply.

It again asks for the usb key.

I haven't found any other person with this issue.

Im stuck, I just wanna play this game. How can I remove this sign in option? I go to settings, and click "security key", then manage but that too asks for a usb security key. I NEVER CREATED ONE… 😫

Script (.bat or other) to constantly create users?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:26 AM PST

    Let me explain:

Let's say the first command on the script does "net user user1 /add" makes this.

I would want the script to loop and go back to do the same "net user user1 /add" but instead of 1, changing it to 2, looping and changing it to 3 and you get the idea, stop when I tell it too.

    Any help?

Windows 11 is getting some much-needed taskbar and Start menu improvements - The Verge

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:59 PM PST

Windows = thumbnails of pictures and videos load SLOWWWWW

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 04:54 PM PST

I don't get it. Why is Windows 10 (and Window 11) so slow on loading thumbnails for photos and video? You scroll down a folder of 2,000 + photos and it takes it (what seems) a life time for thumbnails to load (if they load at all).

This is despite using a 9900k, 64GB DDR4 3200hz RAM, 1tb m.2 SSD with 4000MBS read/write, RTX 3080. And the experience is the same on every single windows computer I've ever used. So the hardware is not to blame.

This makes it very time consuming to organise my huge family photo collection.

By contrasts, on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro, the thumbnails are loaded no matter how fast I scroll. Even for documents.

What gives? I'd rather use a PC as I have a strong preference on using a desktop for this kind of task.

    Thank you!

    Anyone tried Linux?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 04:05 PM PST

I started using Linux in 2016. On and off. Daily drove it for a few months. But there was always something wrong. To be honest it's fine now but the lack of hardware video decode in browsers is what puts me off.

I've never had any problems with Windows. The only time I had a problem was when I got a virus on windows XP for trying to illegally download a 'linking park' album lol

People seem to have problems with Windows alot. Those are the same people who run these stupid registry tweaks, 'debloater tools' and running those random scripts from GitHub to uninstall stuff like Cortana, OneDrive and other stuff

You can run them but in the long term especially with updates it will probably ruin your install. That's when you get issues

I spend more time on Linux trying to fix unnecessary things. The saying 'linux is only free if your time is worth nothing' is somewhat true. But as years go by and Linux improves I guess it'll not mean as much

I learned alot of things in Linux, know how to use the terminal and know a few commands off the top of my head. Installing an OS from scratch (Arch) wasn't as bad as I thought, just follow a YouTube video for 30 mins and that's it. I actually use Powershell and the 'winget' feature to install some programs now

I actually really like Windows 11 though. The UI, ease of use, people love to complain though. But I've had no issues so far.

In terms of security I just make my own personal account as a 'standard' user and have a seperate Admin account so I can change my personal to a normal (non admin) account - similar to how Linux works

    Anyone else?
