Looking for a decent gaming laptop that won’t die within a few years. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:54 PM PST Hello all, I'm currently on the search for a laptop upgrade. I've been relentlessly searching for weeks and I'd looove some input. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:$1500-$2100 USD - USA. I'm ok with going a bit higher but my limit would be $2500. Are you open to refurbs/used?- No. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance Build quality Form factor Battery life I'm not too worried about battery life since I'm going to have it plugged in most of the time. It's for home use since I don't have space for a PC build. How important is weight and thinness to you? - Not too important, but I'd rather not have a brick. Anything less than 5 pounds and on the thin-ish side would be great. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-17" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - I'll be using it for gaming- Minecraft, Valorant, and Friday night funkin. Phasmophobia as well. FNF isn't too demanding so I'm not too worried abt that one. I use Discord for voice chat during gaming as well, don't know if that matters or not. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?- Minecraft is what I'll be playing most of the time. I'd like to run MC at max settings considering the laptop I have now is set at the lowest settings it can go… I'll also be running shaders. FPS above 120 or so is preferred since I'll also be running valorant. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - Reliable build quality, great cooling, and great graphics is all I'm worried about. Cooling is a big factor, I've seen many models with temps that go above 90°F with just light use. Yeesh. I'd also like something with at least 3-4 USB ports, my headset and mouse take up 2 already. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - I've been scrounging the internet for a long time for a reliable gaming laptop to upgrade to and every model I come across has bad reviews that mention either a cooling problem, display problems, some kind of defect, or a hardware issue. It's confusing, it's relentless and I just want answers lmfao. I'm newer to this whole PC thing. I'd rather have something with NVIDIA RTX 3070 or so. No Intel, AMD Ryzen 7 or above processor is preferred 😁 32gb RAM aswell. For reference I currently have an HP Envy 360x with Ryzen 5 and AMD Radeon graphics with 8GB RAM. Criticism on the specs I listed for the new laptop is welcome since I'm not too knowledgeable on it! Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/nagivto [link] [comments] |

Laptop Suggestions! Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:36 PM PST Hi all! Thinking about getting my dad a new laptop for Christmas. He only really uses his laptop for research, Microsoft Word (a lot of) and the very occasional Zoom sessions. His current laptop is extremely slow - it takes ages to load anything and constantly freezes. He's had it for a while. He's currently got a Dell Inspiron 15 5570 series. Some specs are below (apologises if it doesn't help I really don't know much about laptops!) Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.80 GHz RAM: 8GB System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor He really just wants anything that's 15.6inches with 512GB storage. He's not fussed with the brand as long as it's not a Macbook. I'm quite a dummy when it comes to laptops so I was wanting some advice one what to get! I've heard lenovo and HP is pretty good but some are quite pricey so I'm not sure which would be best Price anywhere below $1300AUD Thank u!! submitted by /u/Lonely_Zucchini9901 [link] [comments] |
Christmas present for basic user mom Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:16 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ~$300 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is most important How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None of this Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am looking for a basic, browser friendly laptop for my mom. She needs a front facing camera. She needs to be able to connect to zoom calls with doctors and lawyers/court. She is a very low laptop user but for whatever reason the court case she is in requires a computer and is not able to be connected to with her tablet/phone. Nothing super fancy (obv with the budget) but I want to make sure I get her something that will last her a few years. I am not well versed in computers myself so I feel a little overwhelmed. I know I've read about slow performance, I don't know if you've ever helped your ~55 year old family members but it's like they think the internet should be instant and you should be able to just type in random things to search for anything under the sun lol. Lenovo legion slim 7, is it worth it. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:03 PM PST Been deciding between the lenovo legion and Asus Zephyrus for a couple of days now. So many models and configurations I've been having trouble making up my mind. Just found a brand new Legion Slim 7 Gen 6 with Ryzen 7 5800h, RTX 3060 6gb, 16gb ram, and 2TB ssd for $1845 CAD. Another HP Pavilion or something else? Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:24 PM PST Hey all, I had an HP Pavilion 15 that just had the motherboard go out. It seems like replacing the motherboard is so expensive that I might as well go for a new laptop (but I'm open to input here as well), even though this computer is only a year and a half old. Wanted to see if anyone had any opinions on this matter. For reference, here are the specs I'm coming from, which served me very well: https://preview.redd.it/qo40lb90q7381.png?width=849&format=png&auto=webp&s=96d1330b4a956b8503ec581f3a14aca8d1b22c62 - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. ~1k USD is the upper limit, less is of course better - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, form factor, battery life. I mostly use my laptop plugged in and to run Adobe products, often multiple at once - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Fairly important, I carry it in my backpack up and down many flights of stairs every day - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I found the 15.6 inch display to be just about right for me, so in that neighborhood - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, After Effects (rarely), essentially just the Adobe products - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Looking for modularity - US - $2000 Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:28 PM PST Hello everyone, I hope I'm doing this right. Any advice is much appreciated. I would like for my computer purchasing habits to be more sustainable and as such, my main concern is finding a device that I can use for at least the next 10 years. I figure the most sensible way to ensure this is to buy a laptop with the most replaceable/upgradeable parts as possible, so I'm looking for highly modular devices. I've looked into what Framework has to offer, and I like their design but I'm not sure it will arrive by the time I'd like, if I were to order one. - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$2k USD - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, but not preferable. - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality should be prioritized above everything else. The more parts that can be replaced/upgraded, the better. I'm willing to compromise on the other details. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very important, but it is a plus. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
N/A - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some light gaming, not much of a concern really as I'll primarily use it for general web browsing. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
If it can run Minecraft competently I'm probably good. Doesn't need to be too fancy. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Looking for a device with the most replaceable/upgradeable parts possible. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Additionally I would like to receive it within the next couple of weeks, so anything that would take longer than that to ship is not preferable. submitted by /u/ThanksYouThank [link] [comments] |
17" Laptop for Photo Editing | $900-1100USD | USA Posted: 02 Dec 2021 12:06 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$900-1100USD - USA - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Refurbs ok, no used - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
- Performance/Battery
- Build Quality
- Form Factor
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17" ideal, but potentially flexible - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photoshop/Lightroom with raw files from full frame DSLR - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No gaming required - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No specific needs - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is for my wife and will get used for photo editing and web browsing. Her last two laptops have, within a year or so, started performing horribly. This may be something she's doing but I haven't been able to find root cause. Her last one had a problem where the disk usage would sit at 100% almost all the time. This is a nebulous request but I want something that won't do that. submitted by /u/itsbenforever [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Live Streaming? (£1200) Posted: 02 Dec 2021 04:59 PM PST - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
UK, around £1200 - Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer new, but open to refurbs if from a reputable seller (e.g. not ebay) - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance most import, then build quality, followed by battery and form factor - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important, I plan to take it to classes etc, so ideally nothing too heavy - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Nothing over 16" - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Going to be using it for live-streaming, where it will run obs, vtubestudio, and a game - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
ffxiv, Prey, RE 2 remake + Village, Alien Isolation, possibly Doom Eternal. Moderate settings at least, around 60 fps if possible - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Something that is light and doesn't look like a traditional gamer laptop, I'd like something that looks as close to a normal laptop as possible - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for reasonably priced 2 or 3 in one. Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:44 PM PST My GF really caught her eye on the Surface Laptop Studio, but with the actual hardware specs and the price, we couldn't justify it. We are looking for alternatives that have a proprietary pen attachment that she can write notes on, have 2 in 1 function (obviously), and can do simple gaming or barebones visuals on slightly more demanding titles like Fortnite I guess. All this, at a reasonable price, probably sub $1200. Thanks for any suggestions submitted by /u/Prop-a-gation [link] [comments] |

Suggest a Laptop For My Musical Sister Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:32 PM PST Hi all, Hoping to find a good laptop as a gift for my sister for Christmas. Here's the deets: LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
€1,000 max. Less would be better. Ireland. - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Don't need 2-in-1 or touchscreen. I'd like a good battery, good performance. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Would prefer on the sleeker side, not too bulky or heavy. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I'd probably prefer a medium size screen, around 15". - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The laptop will be used primarily for standard laptop uses - browsing (she tends to have a LOT of tabs open), YouTube, but also potentially music production, depending on if she actually gets around to doing that. But it'd be nice to have the option. No gaming, she might do some light video editing. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like it to look good, like suitable for a girl, maybe a nice white, silver or gold/purple colour. Although performance is primary, it'd be nice to have both. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd prefer to err on the side of too much performance, rather than just the bare minimum. Don't want to get my sister a crap laptop! submitted by /u/Cristero [link] [comments] |
Ports are the Priority - For work - No more dongles! Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:20 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2000-2500 Are you open to refurbs/used? Open to certified refurbs. Otherwise new is better. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ultrabook-ish. How important is weight and thinness to you? Going to carry it around, lighter is better. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"ish Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Audio programs mainly, work in A/V, occasional GUI design, light photo editing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? For work - gaming is last on the list Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Need: RJ45, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB A ports, USB C Ports and charging Want: 1 TB, 16 RAM (dual channel), 11th gen i7. 15" display is the target. Would be nice: 4K, touch, GTX3060 or comparable, just a low level discrete card for running more intensive programs. Something fairly thin and light - I know adding RJ45 pretty much takes it out of that category, but basically I don't want a bulky gaming powerhouse with RGB. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Had considered the Razer Blade 15 Base, but it seems like it's a little iffy. Since it's not for gaming, I'm not really concerned about burning the thing alive from an 8 hour gaming session, but that doesn't seem to be it's only flaw. I would be willing to only drop the RJ45 and run with a dongle for that, but nothing else. I work in A/V IT and currently I have to carry around a bag full of dongles to connect up to everything. submitted by /u/DrToolboxPhD [link] [comments] |
M1 MacBook Air vs. Any Dell/HP/Lenovo laptop of the same price Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:05 PM PST Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are the only major laptop makers that I can officially purchase from in my country, so try not to go beyond that (although suggestions are still welcome). I recently decided I want to buy a MacBook Air M1, but I've never used a Mac before and would prefer a windows laptop if if was as good as a MacBook Air. I simply can't find one for the same price range that even comes close to the Air. My main requirements are screen resolution, build quality, future proofing (needs to last me a long time), and just general day-to-day performance. I use my laptop for up to 8 hours a day for work (writing intensive). Don't need gaming at all, so that's not an issue. Also, I'm switching from a Surface Book 1 if that's relevant. submitted by /u/icantloginsad [link] [comments] |

Lots of gaming: I play a lot of modded Minecraft (CPU/RAM) and Valorant (GPU). - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm really looking to run Valorant at a stable 70-100 frames. Modded Minecraft varies based on the amount of mods but I would like to have an SSD to have faster load times. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Most if not all periphels I use are external. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm willing to go out of budget if the specs are good enough and the laptop is extremely reliable. submitted by /u/TastyEngineering7849 [link] [comments] |
