Looking for repair options on USB-C ports/HP Spectre x360

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 04:16 PM PST

Hi everyone - new to this sub and laptop repair in general, please redirect if there is a more appropriate sub?

I have a 2018 HP Spectre x360 13" that refuses to charge despite endless wiggling. It occasionally does but entirely unreliable. Nothing else is wrong with the machine except the charging. I have now been to several stores in my city (Boston) and nobody is willing to do a replacement on the ports citing motherboard and soldered on ports. I know that a motherboard replacement can cost upto $500-600 (if anyone is even willing and has the parts). Am i just SOL and should find another laptop or is there any hope? Is there anyone out there who has advice on how I could get the ports fixed or find someone who does these kind of repairs? TIA!

Can i upgrade my HP laptop screen or should I just return it?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:15 PM PST

I ordered a laptop from Hp without realising i forgot to upgrade the screen to 1080p resolution. I thought it might be fine when it arrived but god i didn't know just how bad it would be. It's soooo bad.

Can I take it somewhere and have the screen upgraded to a better one, or would it be more reasonable to return it and reorder it with the higher resolution, matte screen?

    https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-laptop-15z-ef2000-touch-optional-2k3t2av-1

This is laptop i ordered, with slightly better specs than the base model. I know it's not an amazing one, I only bought it primarily for my son's schooling, but it's so hard to look at lmao. It just arrived today.

    [HP][Win 10] D:\ drive disappeared then reappeared—how can I prevent this?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:25 AM PST

Please do let me know if this is the wrong place to ask about this.

Specs: HP Pavillion 15-dk0049tx (few months old), Win 10, C:\ is 200 GB drive with Windows installed on it and D:\ is a 1tb HDD where I keep all my files (which I back up twice a week to an external drive, so the files aren't the problem).

My sister's and my HP laptops both have similar default names and are both bluetooth-paired to the same headset, so sometimes when I turn on my headset it connects to and reads out the name of her computer. So that I can tell which computer the headset is connected to easily from the name it reads out, I changed my laptop's name to my name.

What happened then was that before restarting, the video I was playing in the background from my D:\ suddenly stopped and VLC threw up a file not found error. I opened File Explorer to find that only my C:\ and E:\ (SD Card) drives were listed. I promptly changed back the laptop name and restarted but still no dice. Drivers window didn't show the disk, disk management didn't either. Hardware troubleshooting showed no problem at all. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics passed my system on all tests as well. I was at my wit's end and even trying updating drivers, updating Windows updates (other than Win 11 ofc) and checking for BIOS updates.

On advice of the HP Virtual Agent I rebooted my computer in BIOS setup, which was useless bc it doesn't seem to list ANY disk? I'm not quite sure what was up with that. I quit the BIOS setup and booted the computer as normally and open File Explorer to find my D:\ drive miraculously working again??? And disk management detects it as well. I am flummoxed as to why this should be.

My question is, what could have caused this problem and how can I prevent my D:\ from taking abrupt impromptu vacations at the drop of a hat? I guess one possibility is the hard drive was maybe not connected properly? My laptop is new and came with a defective motherboard which had to be replaced manually, so maybe a cable or whatever got dislodged during that procedure? Although my motherboard no longer gives me problems. I don't know. I would appreciate insight and advice!

    Laptop suggestions for photo editing

I'm starting to get into photography and need a better computer to make editing photos easier and smoother. I want a windows OS and a 13 to 15.6" screen. My budget is around $2k but would prefer it to be closer to the $1.5k range.

What options would you recommend in this range?

    Thanks

    Need a relatively budget laptop

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 02:28 PM PST

I'm a student going into my exam years and I believe it'd be beneficial to have a laptop to help me revise and do my coursework, I don't have much knowledge on laptops and that's why I'm here. What's a good laptop for around £300 that would be good for productivity. Any questions just ask, thanks in advance :)

Just like the title states, Need to hit up best buy this weekend and spend 2k ish on something. If money wasn't a huge factor what would you buy? I manage a crypto farm so I keep my computer on me 24/7 so I gotta replace it asap. I've been eyeing the new macbooks but I havent been into the mac PC universe in 5-6 years.

    r/laptops help a brother out.

TLDR: I have 2k ish to spend on a laptop that I wont be gaming with, but plan on using for many years

I need help with buying new laptop.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:10 PM PST

    Hello;
You probably get a lot of this kind of questions, but i found Reddit as my last resort.

I've been doing a lot of research, watching youtube guides, reading posts, benchmark forums, and realized that laptops are good when they are above 1000$ ( well at least for gaming)

Still, i need something more of a budget version, that shouldn't be above 600$, so i can afford it ( i will be also probably paying it in monthly rates as my monthly wage is 550$ - that's around average for my country)
I will be mostly using laptop for work ( not some heavy programs, which doesn't really require a lot of specs), but i also want to be able to play couple of games on it from time to time, one of them being wow shadowlands and maybe dota 2.
In my search i came across these laptops, and i was wondering if someone with knowledge could take a look and tell me if in right direction, or if they are any worth buying (id probably try and use it for at least 2 years) and if they could even play those games (well dota probably, almost anything runs it).

    1. HP 255 G8 15.6″ FHD Ryzen 3 5300U 8GB 512GB ( i had HP before and had bad experience, and I am kind of afraid of buying it)
    2. Acer Aspire 3 A315-23 AMD Ryzen 3 3250U 15.6″
    3. Acer NOT16300 15,6"/Intel i3-1005G1/8 GB/256 GB SSD

So I am posting those 3, as others i have on me, all kind of seem to have same specifications, as I am not sure what i am exactly looking at, and as for what i have learned, is that ryzen cpu's have good integrated gpu on them.

Thank you all in advace, hope the post is not too long, and that i have explained everything very well.

    Laptop for next year

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 12:48 PM PST

I need a laptop for the next year any help?

Next year (I know it's a long time from now but to be prepared) we need to have a laptop. I really don't want Apple, they're not good tbh. My price range is between: 500 to 700. Not gaming cuz not allowed but better if it good, and not a cheap crappy one. I live in Spain so look up "amazon.es" so that the results are the same. Thanks!

    My current choice: https://www.amazon.es/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Ordenador-portátil-i5-1135G7/dp/B08V249BKY/ref=psdc_938008031_t1_B099KR2WWB?th=1

Why is my laptop performing poorer than it should?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:35 AM PST

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 5402 with the ff specs:
    CPU: Intel 1135g7
    GPU: Nvidia GEForce MX330
    12 GB ram
and runs league and valorant at about 60fps on low settings.

My friend's laptop is HP Laptop 14s-dk1505AU
    CPU: Ryzen 3 3250U
GPU: AMD Radeon Graphics, which afaik is integrated
    8GB ram
and I noticed that league and valorant run better on his device averaging about 100+fps on both games running on low settings. I know that league and valorant are games that are not too demanding on a device but does anyone know why my device performing so poorly when it has arguably better specs?

HP Pavilion Aero (13z-be000) VS. Asus ZenBook (Q408UG-211.BL)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 11:08 AM PST

I'm copying this over from another thread because I'm lazy, but....

Does anyone have input on deciding between the HP Pavilion Aero 13 and the ASUS Zenbook 14 as something for general use and school? Here's how they're spec'd and priced after taxes + shipping:

HP Pavilion Aero (13z-be000) ASUS ZenBook (Q408UG-211.BL)
    Final Price $636.54 $685.62
    CPU Ryzen 5 5600U Ryzen 5 5500U
    RAM 16 GB 8 GB
Graphics AMD Radeon Graphics (???) MX450
    Display 13.3" WQXGA (2560 x 1600) 14.0" HD (1920x1080)
Storage 256 GB SSD 256 GB SSD

Based off of this, it seems like the HP is equal to or has the leg up in everything except its GPU while being $50 less, which makes me lean heavily towards it. Even with the better GPU in the ZenBook, I would probably never play games on it, especially because I already have a desktop with an i5-9400 and a GTX 1660, so it would just be a really big compromise in graphics and performance to do so.

I'm wondering if anyone has anything to say about the build quality of either laptop or if anyone has personal experience with either laptop in general. They're both metal and seem relatively nice for the price, and while I definitely like the aesthetics of the ZenBook more, that alone isn't worth it to me.

If anyone has any different recommendations, that would be chill too. tankx
