    Simple Questions - November 28, 2021

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 05:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I was using INTERGRATED GRAPHICS this ENTIRE TIME

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:33 PM PST

So yesterday I realized that my monitor was plugged into the motherboard rather than my 3060 TI. I been playing like that for a while and wondering some games were bad to run on. WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

Announce: a new sub for modding prebuilts : /r/buildapcprebuilt

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:55 PM PST

(this announce was given the greenlight by asking mods)

I've recently purchased a prebuilt because I wanted the APU and GPU without entering in draws or paying a scalper for the GPU.

It was hard to piece together information about the motherboard, the clearances inside the case, what parts you can reuse on your own build etc. so I've created /r/buildapcprebuilt

The first candidate is the HP TG01 that was torn down by GN on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OZGmWZyhac

I've got the 2176x (AMD 5700G with 16Gb of RAM in dual channel, 512G NVMe + 1Tb SATA) which is a different beast, and personally, I don't hate it: yes it has nonstandard parts, but some of them make sense:

    • the front ports integrated to the motherboard means you won't have EMI noise (great for USB3),

    • the slotted torx are suprisingly handy, the one holding the sliding case can be opened with just by fingers

    • the PSU + APU is really efficient: it draws 20W total when not gaming, and 0.2 in suspend mode

    • the thermals aren't bad, and the whole thing is quite silent,

    • it's small and easy to carry around,

    • fuck it was 1 grand! I could part it out and still make a profit!!

I'm still waiting for some black friday parts, as I thought I was going to part it out or rebuilt inside a case, but I can fit 3 SATA drives inside with just one Y cable for the 3rd drive... and that's good enough for a small file server, so I'm reconsidering!

If you're in the same situation, or you want to mod your prebuilt or just share info about your hacks, head over to /r/buildapcprebuilt

2TB WD Black drive shows up as 120GB?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:16 AM PST

Was really excited to finally receive this drive in the mail today. Plopped it into my pc only to have it show up as a Sandisk 120GB drive.

After a quick google search, it appears this is classic case of return fraud? Kinda strange as the seal on the box was fully intact and didn't appear to be tampered with at all. Was also purchased directly through Amazon UK.

Contacting Amazon now. Hope I didn't just waste £250 on this POS.

    1050 ti (4GB) or 5600g graphics?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:04 AM PST

I can get my hands on a 1050 ti fairly easily (for $300, yuck I know). But I'm wondering if would be better to just use the APU instead and look for a GPU to pair with it later on? Let me know what you think. Trying to get a build together for a friends teenage son.

Edit: He would play games like call of duty and mostly esports titles.

Squeezing every ounce from this cheap build.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PST

So my first ever build is a cheap build. I spent several months putting it together piece by piece while sourcing parts as cheap as possible. Now that she's finished, I'm wondering about getting the most out of it. I use Daz3D, Blender, Photoshop, After Effects, and toss in some mild gaming.

    Here's the parts: 4x8gb (32) Corsair Ram 100$ Corsair Case 30$ (new) 4x Deepcool fans 25$ 2 WD blue 2TB HDD 75$ MSI BM520 Mobi 80$ AMD 5-5600x 120$ (Included cooler) Aries 650w PSU 25$ AMD 7950HD 3gb GPU 100$ (USED)

How can I push this further? New cooler? SSD obviously. New thermal paste on the GPU?

    CPU overheating

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:40 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

After my PC crashed a couple times while gaming I looked into it and realised CPU temperature was constantly at 100°C! I'm assuming that this is why my PC crashes (and also, it is terrible for my PC), however I can't figure out what's wrong!

    Here are my specs: - CPU: i5 11600 - GPU: RTX 3070Ti FE - PSU: Corsair SF600 Platinum - RAM: 2x8GB Ballistix CL16 3600 MHz - Mobo: ROG Strix B560-I - Case: NR200P (with TG panel) - CPU cooler: Cryorig H7 - Case fans: 4x Arctic P12 PWM

Here's what I got from HWInfo when the PC crashed: - CPU was drawing 150W - GPU temp topped out at 70°C, all other temps were lower - CPU had been running at max temp for around an hour before the crash (yikes) - Fans were running at full tilt (CPU: 1600 RPM; case: 1800 RPM) - I have access to other info in the log as necessary, just don't know what else could be relevant

And here's what I tried: - Re-applying thermal paste: thermal paste (Cryorig H7) looked to be applied well enough already, but I still cleaned everything thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and tried again - no dice - Cleaning out dust - I have double checked that I didn't accidentally leave a plastic film on the CPU/heat sink - Airflow is: bottom as intake, top as exhaust and CPU cooler as exhaust through the back

I'm at a complete loss, only the CPU is overheating but it's overheating badly, any help welcome!

    Old CPU advice

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:09 AM PST

Hello! I'm putting together a PC for my cousin using an amalgamation of parts from 2 PCs that my friend's dad Dale found by the side of the road. One had an evga GTX 970, the other a reference R9 290. I know the R9 still holds up as a pretty decent card with modern games, so I'll stick with that one, even though the reference model has a fan that's louder than the day of Christ's return. My question is what to pick between the CPUs. I only really got into PC bulding a few years ago, so I'm a little in the dark when it comes to old processors. I think an i5 3570 would outperform an FX 4100 in most uses cases, right? I assume neither would be great, so would it be worth looking into other used CPUs I could get without upgrading the motherboard? Thanks guys, have a great week and keep putting your old PCs by the side of the road so Dale can keep finding them for me.

For the love of all that is holy, where the f*ck can I get DDR5 to finish my build

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 08:21 PM PST

Last time I built a computer was 2014. I'm ready for the next chapter, and now seems like the time to do it.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 03:37 AM PST

    Build Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    I have, indeed

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

HEAVY gaming, and maybe some light music production. I'd like to be able to screen capture and record clips throughout my games. Not streaming. Would someone be able to suggest a solid 2TB NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD for game storage that isn't stupid expensive?

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p 120Hz, ultra settings. My current PC crashes Warzone at least 6 times a night. I'm looking to stop that. I will be using an XFX Thicc RX 5700 XT.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    ~1400 USD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    'Murca

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

So my build is ~99.9% solidified. There were a lot of factors that went into landing on each part. I'm only posting on here as a sort of formality for myself and in the spirit of due diligence.

My cornerstone was the motherboard/CPU combo. I really don't see myself needing anything more than a Ryzen 5 here, so I wanted something that wouldn't be too overkill for that CPU. I also wanted to leave myself a bit of an 'out' if I wanted a bit more power down the line to upgrade to a Ryzen 7.

I initially considered the Unify-x, but further research suggested that the VRM wouldn't even come close to its peak efficiency with a 5600X. In fact, it seems that it would barely reach it with a 5950X. Too overkill. Then I landed on the Carbon. It has all of the features that I'm looking for in terms of performance, and I/O at an affordable price. Cornerstone set.

I went with a 4000Mhz B-Die RAM kit because I'm reading that 4000 was supposed to be the sweet spot for Ryzen. I can always downclock, but I'm expecting to have a 1:1 ratio for my infinity fabric.

Everything else is for looks or speed (AIO & SSD). Please advise if you see anything sticking out like a sore thumb. I've sold myself on all components here, but will listen to competent arguments for change.

How should I upgrade my PC from where I am right now?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:07 AM PST

Ok, so I am 14 and I plan on upgrading my rig sometime soon. What parts should I maybe aim for from where I am right now? I also have Christmas coming up soon and I usually am given some money to spend on something that I would like to buy. I will list what I have and I would like a recommendation on what parts to buy next to get a nice boost in FPS in a lot of games. I always play 1080p 60fps, and that's what I plan on sticking with for while.

    Current PC:

    - CPU: i7 2600 4 Cores 3.40GHz LGA1155

    - GPU: GTX 980 4GB

    - RAM: 16GB DDR3

I am looking for a nice boost that can keep pretty much all of my 1080p games at a stable 60fps, no matter what I throw at them. I would like for it to maybe stay within the $500 dollar range, and I'm not sure what part(s) to upgrade specifically to replace to improve upon what I already have. If you need any more information, please let me know.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:23 PM PST

So I built my PC With 2 1TB SSD Because at the time I built it buying 2 1tb was cheaper than buying a 2tb Now I forgot if I split the drives or if I combined them. When I look at my local drive it only shows a terabyte. I've got about 200GB left I'm curious of anybody can help me figure out what happened to my other drive.

is there a way to know if mobos are past the i225v issue?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:31 PM PST

my partner (the greatest) bought me an ROG strix b550-f gaming (WiFi). i was considering another one but this happened to be on my wishlist and it's here. I haven't actually built a computer yet.

I was looking at other mobos because I'd read about the i225v Lan chip issue. I don't understand it but I'd moved away from buying the board because I don't want something with potential manufacturing defects.

is there any way of knowing whether the board is at version 3, without contacting asus, or perhaps without building the computer and looking at the firmware config? is there a workaround? I'd really like to use this one if possible. if there's a fix that the community says has worked I'd take that too. I just can't see any topics on this younger than ~9 months ago, or that have universally worked, so I'd like to assume this was resolved but I want to make sure.

    thank you!

Upgrading BIOS on motherboard to support CPU

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:29 PM PST

On PC part picker I sometimes get this compatibility error for my motherboard that it may need the BIOS to be upgraded to support my CPU, is this something I'll be able to do easily? Or should I consider different parts? I don't really want to change my CPU, so do I need to change my motherboard or will I be fine? I'm a little new to this. I'm trying to use the Ryzen 7 5800x.

What 32GB kit for 10850K/3090? My G.Skill just died

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:15 PM PST

One of my G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB DIMMs just died after only a few months. That's the fastest I've had RAM die. It was
    running at XMP 1 - 3600 CL16-19-19-39.

Anyway, what's a good/better replacement? I play games at 5120x1440 with an RTX 3090, so strong RAM is a plus.

Monitor says "no signal" when I plug it into my PC

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:31 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I just upgraded some parts in my pc yesterday and have been working on it today too. When I plug my monitors in, they don't turn on. I've plugged my monitor into my laptop with a HDMI cable and it works fine, so I think it's an issue with my GPU or my PC. The HDMI doesn't work either from monitor to PC, so it's not about the cables I think?

Either way, I need some help figuring this one out!

My current build: https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/s7bZgt All of the parts are new except for the GPU, which worked yesterday in my old build.

My monitors I'm using (both do not seem to work, my main monitor I connect with DP and my second I connect with VGA):

    1. Acer Nitro XV270Pbmiiprx

    2. Philips Brilliance 242G5DJEB

So far I've tried unplugging and replugging all cables, and have moved my GPU from one PCIEX16 slot to the other and reconnected it all, but it still didn't work. I've also removed my RAM and only put one in to see if it made a difference, but it didn't.

If anyone has any suggestions, please help me out!

UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED As u/sta5is suggested, I unplugged the monitors and only booted it up with the VGA cable and monitor. By doing so I finally managed to get one screen working so I could update GPU drivers, which led to me being able to plug in my second monitor and get it working too.

Thank you all so much for the help and suggestions. I'm relieved to find out I didn't accidentally break my GPU, especially with the current GPU market.

    Question about processor cooling

    Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:04 PM PST

And the ryzen 5 5600x cost me €285. But the 7 5800x is now on sale for €349 but that comes without a cooler. Should i get the 7 5800x because it got the Dark rock 4 anyway?
