Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Possible to skip the GPU?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 06:04 AM PST

Is totally skipping the GPU and going for a CPU with integrated graphics worth it during this time where GPU prices are just through the roof? For the CPU I was thinking something like a AMD Ryzen 5 5600G

Please help finish my son's PC before Christmas

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 04:55 AM PST

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 Mobo: MSI B550 Pro-VDH Case: NZXT H210

He's not gonna be doing any heavy gaming and I've tried the GPU raffles to no avail. I'm trying to spend around 300 on the GPU but I can go as much as 400 if needed. I have the following cards in my cart and need help choosing before their gone

ASUS GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Phoenix Fan Edition DVI-D HDMI $285

    GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 3GB GDDR5 Refurbished $260

ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce GTX 1650 OC Edition 4GB $380

I'm welcomed to other suggestions as well. Thank you

Edit: somebody asked but I can't find the comment. Son is 13yo. Mostly plays Minecraft but he does play the occasional shooters like Apex and BF

What was your biggest mistake in your first build?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 05:42 PM PST

So I'm finishing up my first ever build and doing cable management and things like that.

My big screw up is pretty funny. I forgot to put the backplate on the motherboard and was literally cussing at the AIO because it wouldn't stay in place

My friend took a picture of his board and I noticed the backplate and put two and two together. Now my AIO pump is sitting firmly in place over my CPU 😑

Good learning experience. I had to take a break and drink a beer after that. And now for the future I'll know how to mount the pump

    10700k for $150 or 12700k for $400? Which PC should I choose?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 12:49 PM PST

Both will have DDR4 ram. z590 vs z690 motherboards. Everything else the same. Which is better bang for the buck? Which would you go for?

Stuck on form factor. Family gaming pc build.

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 02:17 PM PST

My children's dad and I decided separate and he kept the computer. (It was his). My son (8) likes to game and I think it's a bit sad that's when he's at my place he can't play Fortnight or Portal. I need a PC for myself anyway. So I am looking to build a PC for myself, that my son can game on from time to time. (I also have a daughter - which is why it's my PC that he can use).

Unfortunately I can't seem to decide on the best form factor to go for. A full ATX is overkill - I think. Also, very much a teenage boy aesthetic that I'm just not into as a middle-aged woman.

A mini-itx is what I really want - but I am concerned about fire (H1 nzxt) and lack of expansion slots.

A macro-atx seems like the best option but apparently the motherboards for that form factor aren't great and there isn't a lot of innovation in this form factor. From the reviews this seems to be the "budget" option.

I've been going around in circles on this for ages now and I can't work it out. A mini-itx is great but leaves no room for expansion, might also catch on fire if you overclock the CPU (as if I know how to do that).

TL;DR: How do I build an elegant and discreet looking PC on the outside but still a beast - or beast potential (GPU will be a cheap one for now) - on the inside? Budget is $1200. I have a monitor and keyboard.

i7-4790K hitting 90+ degrees while running Cinebench

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:43 PM PST

    First off, my specs:

    i7-4790k (Corsair H100i v2 240mm AIO)

    MSI Z97 Gaming 5 MB

    12GB RAM

    MSI Gaming X GTX 1070

I'm having a problem recently where my games are running like crap, and I'm having to turn all my setting to low/medium and still dropping frames, almost impossible to get a consistent 60FPS.

I tried cleaning out my radiator, cleaning the fans, dusting the whole PC, resetting the cooler and reapplying thermal paste. Also completely removed any overclock (now at 4Ghz, 1.2V) and even still with all that I'm hitting 90+ in cinebench and my CPU is throttling down to ~3.5Ghz. At idle my CPU temp sits around 38-40 (about 18C ambient temp in my room).

According to Corsairs software, my pump is running at around 3000-3500RPM and the coolant is getting to about 38C, usually no higher than 40, although occasionally hitting just above 40. The CPU fans are running as high as 1600RPM and I have them at fixed speed at 100%.

My GPU is running really cool, the fans don't even bother turning on.

I've reapplied thermal paste twice now and both times I took off the cooler, the thermal paste have very even full coverage on the CPU.

So I'm completely stumped and not sure what to do at this point or what to troubleshoot. Anyone got any advice?

Finally did it! NZXT H1 Front Panel mod..!

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 03:12 PM PST

    Hey hey guys!

Are you one of those who is looking for the front mesh panel? Are you irritated by the atrocious prices of the front panel mods for your H1? Do you think you want a cheaper option and also, be satisfied? Well read below then! :)

    My Story-
So I spent almost 6 months looking for a front panel mod. Now I know there are mods by artisian design and then other from etsy. All cost me around €70-€150 + shipping around €15-€35. I went through several posts to find one post where this guy made his own panel and attached it to the same front panel frame as the one with tempered glass.

    Link to post--> https://www.reddit.com/r/NZXT/comments/hxu33y/custom_nzxt_h1_panel_attached_to_original_frame/

Anyway, his suggestion seemed like a great one, but only difficulty was that I had no designs in mind. Thanks to a little bit of my expertise with graphic designing, I was able to make a cad design for the front panel. Took accurate measurements and now, its just looked too good. I sent the design to at least 5-6 laser cutting studios and all got back to me with different quotes for the cutting. Finally decided on one of them, it took them 3 weeks though, with back and forth email about the design and format to be sent, but finally its here and it looks gorgeous. The best part is, it costed me €35 including shipping to get it to the doorstep.

My suggestion is, if you are looking for one and think all the designs outside are too expensive? Make one and get it cut on an acrylic sheet. Way cheaper and easier.

Now coming to the photos here is a link to all of them.

    https://imgur.com/a/dnrrd1g

Its cut out on a 3mm Black Acrylic sheet. Why Black? Coz it went with the theme. Did not want a different color. Also, I am not so fond of the RGB lighting and like my case black. The red light on the mobo was turned off, but it got turned on again as I updated the BIOS recently. The mod is attached to the panel using gorilla double sided tape.

Now, few key points to note-

    > The tempered glass (TG) is attached to the front panel by double sided tape. This tape is industrial standards and is too strong. Use hair dryer or something that makes it easy to peel it off. Caution, it needs a lot of heat. It took me two sessions of 30 mins to peel it off completely.

    > The front panel is made of Aluminum (if I am not wrong). It is very easy to bend while removing the TG. Please be cautious. When you heat it, if you use brut force you will 100% bend the panel. So you need to be really patient with it.

    > There could be residual tape on the panel, please use some rubbing alcohol (I had IMS) to clean the surface before you use double sided tape to glue your panel (if you decide to fix it with double sided tape).

I am pretty satisfied with the build overall. Now I strongly believe that this will definitely help with the temps. But since the slots on the panel are big, it is gonna let a lot of dust pass through. I know that this is an exhaust but its not an active exhaust (There are no front fans). So, I might get a dust filter and place it there. Still to decide on that.

Here is a link to my design-

    https://cad.onshape.com/documents/e1e403c71d295bf0a602a527/w/96d444467844bb3c16cd2fac/e/2caf0e5af26df13dc39c809d?renderMode=0&uiState=618ef0f8997dfc27c506e0dd

You do not need an account to see the design. You can right click on the design and export it as DXF/DWG. Mostly your laser cutting studios will accept the formats so, it shouldn't be a problem.

Let me know what you think guys.! And if you need any help, feel free to DM me.

Special thanks to- u/Ma1ware for indirectly fueling me with this idea from his reddit post.

    1440p G-Sync monitor advice

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 04:11 PM PST

I'm looking for an upgrade for my current 1080p 60Hz monitor. I'd like 1440p and G-Sync, but have a couple questions regarding that:

I hate screen tearing and microstutter and understand G-Sync would help eliminate a lot of that especially at higher refresh rates. Would it help with stuttering below 60fps, as I play a lot of simulators which are often hard to achieve 60+ fps? Also from my understanding many "G-Sync Compatible" monitors variable refresh rate only starts somewhere around 45-60fps, so surely a true G-Sync monitor would be better for me for when fps dips below that?

One of the monitors I've found is the ViewSonic ELITE XG270QG, which ticks all the boxes, but I've heard it suffers from some issues such as bad backlight bleed. Anyone got any other suggestions that I wouldn't have to sell a kidney for?

So I have windows 10 downloaded on a sata ssd and I would like to move it to one of my m.2 drives. How could I do this properly? I honestly don't want to remove any hardware, so a solution that doesn't involve that is preferable.

Do I need a sound card?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 01:40 PM PST

So, I have audio inputs and the terrible speakers on my monitor. I was thinking that I would get some kind of speaker set—nothing too fancy, but better than the below average sound on my monitor. But do I also need a sound card of some sort to amplify said speakers?

Would upgrading from 8GB DDR3 TO 16GB DDR4 and FX 8300 to Ryzen 7 3800x be much better for gaming?

    So many questions about ram?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2021 03:12 PM PST

I'm building a new pc from scratch and every time I find some ram I'd potentially like to buy I keep seeing reviews complaining about timings etc. I'm planning to put a ryzen 5600x and rtx 3070 so at the very least I want 2x16gb ddr4 3200. Still, there's so much to choose from so if anyone can advise me on what all the specifics are or point me to some ram under 150 it would be very appreciated.
