    Simple Questions - November 11, 2021

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 05:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

The current state of the GPU Market: A message from your mod team

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 02:00 PM PDT

    Hi All,

As you may or may not be aware, the GPU market is going through tough times. Like really tough. For a year now, a combination of factors have lead to GPUs being in extremely short supply, and highly inflated in price. With the Global pandemic, cryptocurrency mining, tariffs, production limitations and other supply and demand factors still coinciding, it's unlikely that the situation will improve in the near future.

We all want to build great PCs, and right now it's hard and that sucks.

We ask for your help during these shortages by requesting that you pay mind to the following:

    • We cannot predict when this situation will ease or end. No one has a crystal ball.

    • Don't ask us how to buy a GPU. You can read about others' experiences and see if you can emulate them with the time and skills you have available, but no-one has an easy answer. People are finding GPUs at retail and patient persistence is one of the primary methods that yields rewards.

    • Some people might decide to use bots to assist them in making a purchase. On /r/buildapc, we do not condone the discussion, recommendation or advertisement of bots.

    • Please don't get scammed. This is a fraught market and fraudsters will exploit your desire to buy a GPU. If a product is being sold by a third party below market price in all probability it is bait for a scam. Never send money by bank transfer, Paypal Friends & Family, or strange cash apps you've not heard of until your seller suggests them. Engage in any non-retail transaction with extreme caution. Ensure any payments you make are covered by robust buyer protection. We will not permit topics such as 'Is this a scam?' or 'Did I get scammed?'

    • Do not offer to sell or ask to buy components in this subreddit or via direct message. Posts will be removed and posters banned.

    • Be kind to one another. Some people may choose to pay inflated prices. Other people may mine with their GPUs. Neither of those make abuse or harassment acceptable and we will take action against breaches of our rules concerning civility.

In the meantime there are ways to build a PC now despite the GPU shortage:

You could build a stop-gap system with graphics output integrated into the CPU or search for used older cards. Some weaker cards are no longer optimal for mining and so may be more readily available. There are many possible solutions, and we're sure the buildapc community can help you if you need a PC right now and can't wait for supply to catch up to demand.

To keep the rest of the subreddit on topic, please keep discussion of the GPU shortages, retail frustrations, etc. to this thread only. Other submissions will be removed.

Should I buy an RTX 3090 for 750€?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 12:17 PM PST

I saw a used RTX 3090 (MSI gaming trio x) for 750€ and the question is, should I buy it.

The Seller is stating this card has been only used for 3 months.

Seems way to good to be true imo.

Is Intel 12th Generation CPU the return of Intel's dominance or AMD will return with a better CPU soon?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:50 PM PST

With the release of the 12th generation of Intel CPUs, many reviewers like Jarrod's Tech has said that the 12th generation CPUs are by far the better than AMD Ryzen CPUs.

What do you think about this introduction? Is Intel back for the kill or AMD will punch back soon?

    Budget build complete!

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:56 AM PST

Finished a little project this morning and wanted to share it with everyone. We are all aware of how rough it is out there for some people trying to get in to PC gaming, so I decided to try and see how cheaply I could do so. This started as a refurbished PC from Wal Mart that comes up for sale once or twice a week. I will put a link at the bottom. It has an R5 3500 CPU, 8GB of Ram, a 256 NVME drive, an 80 plus platinum PSU, and a 1650 super. HP prebuilt computers have started to use the same cooler which is LGA115X. This means you can use an aftermarket cooler that would fit Intel. I chose the Noctua NH-L9i which is my favorite low profile cooler. I removed the stock 8GB stick of RAM and replaced it with 16 GB of 2x8 SP gaming 3000. The B550 Erica board does not support XMP so don't go too crazy on speed.

The end result is for just under $550 you have a 1080p capable gaming machine. This is not going to be a benchmark beast, but it is a good bang for your buck setup.

Just need a new PSU cable, or am I missing something?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:58 PM PST

So my partner is moving from the UK to Canada soon... with a newly built PC (not the best timing to have gotten one, we know, but a lot happened quite fast!).

He has this PSU (a Corsair 850W RM Series 80 Plus): https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categories/Products/Power-Supply-Units/Power-Supply-Units-Advanced/RM-Series%E2%84%A2-80-PLUS-Gold-Power-Supplies/p/CP-9020196-UK

The wattage is rated from 100 - 240v, which, as far as I understand, means we just need to get him a new cord for Canadian sockets. However, that feels way too easy! I feel like I'm missing something.

Does anyone have any advice? Is it indeed as easy as getting a new cord? Would we be better off buying a whole new PSU in Canada?

Just snagged my very first 3060 ti for my first build, lil unhappy the tax sent it over 700 but, in this economy, what can one do?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 09:53 AM PST

been stalking best buy, Newegg, and my back alley dealer for a week with a livestream on youtube 24/7 keeping me updated. The latest Best Buy drop sacrificed one of its dignified refined pieces of art in the Nvidia 30 series to a lowly peasant like me for 679.99. Please tell me this was not a waste. Luckily my wallet is still intact and my bank hasn't sent a rescue party for me yet.

Is an 'NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super' graphics card good for gaming? Or is it considered kind of low quality? I have nothing to compare it to so I'm wondering how well I will do with game quality.

Is getting a 144hz monitor worth it if I only play valorant and get 90-150 fps?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 12:58 PM PST

I'm using the integreated Intel UHD 730 graphics, will the experience be bad on a 144hz monitor if I maintain the full 144fps and only get about 100 Average? I only play valorant btw.

Turn on PC but black screens

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:25 PM PST

Hello last night I replaced my R5 2600 with a R5 3600 and turn it on and just got a black screen along with my keyboard and mouse not powering on, but my roommates keyboard and mouse turn on when connected to my PC. I'll turn on my PC with all the lights and fan running as usual, it'll connect to my monitor for a split second but then have the monitor turn off.

I removed and installed the gpu, cpu, ram and unplugged and plugged the cords to the motherboard and gpu, take out put back in the motherboard battery coin, also plugged in my roommates gpu and again no display on screens. At this point I'm just assuming it's the motherboard

    3080 vs 3080 ti

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 11:19 AM PST

I have a GTX 1050 ti at the moment but it is too slow for my hobby: Blender, when I have to render my only bottle neck is my gpu and it has been really holding me back. I have been wanting to buy a 3080 ti but im not sure if the 3080 ti is worth the extra money over the 3080. (where i have been looking to buy a gpu the price for a 3080 is €1749 with a psu included for free, and the 3080 ti is €2199 + €198 for a 1000w psu) is the extra €650 worth the 1300 cuda cores and the 2 gb extra vram?

    Is Corsair RAM still good?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 11:22 PM PST

I've been seeing posts about how Corsair has gone into the toilet, quality wise, on their mid to lower tier kits. Have they gotten the that bad? I'm doing my first build right now and see a lot of Corsair kits for cheap (16gb 3600). Should I avoid those?

    Will this build work?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:27 PM PST

This is a build that a friend is asking help on. We know the case is not airflow great but this is what they want, now if the PSU okay or do we need to go bigger? they are thinking a 4.2 overclock area. other specs are normal.

Can you put a 3.5" drive in a 2.5" drive bay? Can you adapt it?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:13 PM PST

    https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/cases/mini-tower/masterbox-q300l/

I was looking for a small, easy-to-move-around case that I could throw three 3.5 hard drives in and the MasterBox Q300L mATX Case looks great, but I have no idea if I can adapt those 2.5 drive bay into a 3.5 bay. There is plenty of space in the back of the case, it's just a matter of if there is a way to mount my drives. Can I buy an adapter or should I look for a different case (preferably something < $50)?

    Alright, the time has come...

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:06 PM PST

    So it's been a while...

Last PC I built was with the fine help of this subreddit: Existing PC
All I've updated since then is moving OS to SSD, and swapping out a rickety old GTX570 for a GTX1060 6GB recently-ish.

Feeling like it's finally time for a new build!
I'm using for gaming, music production, programming (machine learning), and a bit of light video and photo editing. Currently targeting 1080p (might go for higher res monitors and new GPU when this GPU-price nonsense cools down...)

    (I already have two 1080p monitors [1][2], a case, a GTX1060 6GB & peripherals)

Here's what I'm looking at for now:

    AMD Build

    Component Choice Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor £251*
Motherboard MSI X570-A PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard £139\*
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory £110
    PSU EVGA 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply £83
SSD (OS) Western Digital Blue SN550 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ~£70
    Total £654

    --or--

    Intel Build

    Component Choice Price
    CPU Intel Core i5-12600K 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor £270*
Motherboard Gigabyte Z690 AORUS ELITE DDR4 ATX LGA1700. MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 ATX LGA1700 Motherboard EDIT: Out of Stock >.< £183
    Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory £110
    PSU EVGA 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply £78
SSD (OS) Western Digital Blue SN550 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ~£70
    Total £711

    Would appreciate any suggestions/improvements/optimisations.

    Thanks for your help!

    A few more specific questions:

    Questions:

    • CPU
      • AMD: The 5600x comes with a cooler so I wouldn't need to buy one, right?
    • SSD (for Operating System)
      • BOTH: Does SATA makes more sense for boot drive?
    • Memory
      • BOTH: Can/Should I get faster DDR4 RAM? (e.g. 3600)
      • BOTH: Is 2x16GB or 4x8GB RAM better for performance? (guessing this is Board dependant?)
      • INTEL: Am I better to go with DDR4 for now, to upgrade Board and Memory further down the road? (given it's early days for DDR5)
    • Motherboard
      • AMD: Should I be going with a X570 motherboard to ensure futureproofing on buying a newer GPU down the line?

Moving Overseas Temporarily in a Bit Over a Month, Advice For Shipping PC?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:42 PM PST

So, I created a reddit account specifically to create this post, and I apologize if this question belongs in a different subreddit. I couldn't find much of a consensus online, so here I am.

I am a Computer Science student in the US who is studying in the UK for about six or so months in early January. Because of what I do, I need to bring my desktop and monitor over. However, I have no idea how to even approach this, or where to begin research to do this.

The case that I use is the SPEC-OMEGA Carbide Series Mid Tower by Corsair. Additionally, I do not have a lot of the original boxes for my PC parts.

While I do have a few basic ideas of how I can ship my PC with my monitor and such, I feel particularly out of my depth when it comes to this.
While I do prefer possible cheaper options, I am open to any suggestion or any advice anyone has.
